  • This was very epic in every way both visually and vocally. NightWish can certainly put on an incredible show. The intro, flute and bagpipes were my favorite part.

Right, so I'm going to be your Poet and the Pendulum explainer tonight. It's pretty hot around here and I don't have too much energy left, so I'm shamelessly going to recycle my last version. Here goes:
Nightwish came to life when shortly after their foundation the singer Tarja Turunen joined the band, a childhood friend from Tuomas Holopainen, the keyboarder and main composer of the band. They achieved some greatness together but there were mounting tensions within the band around Tarjas pursuit of a solo career and a certain dislike of her newly aquired husband and manager.
This led to the band firing Tarja with an open letter right after the "End of an Era" concert in Helsinki. There is a DVD of that concert and I suggest you watch the last song and what goes on with the band members after that last song: th-cam.com/video/dorX-FLd6ec/w-d-xo.html
Bring that mindset plus some quite negative reactions from the fans into play and you can see part of why Tuomas went into a pretty deep depression. In this state of mind he wrote the song "The Poet and the Pendulum" based on Edgar Allen Poes novel The Pit and the Pendulum, where a sharp blade slowly descends on a prisoner. The song deals with the pressure to write new songs, feelings of betrayal, despair and anger and the longing for death, but also with the unconditional love from his parents. After coming to a quite dramatic end, the song also offers a new beginning at the end.
The song initially should be the namegiver to the new album but eventually the band settled on "Dark Passion Play", where it's on you whether to connect the first two words or the last.
Remarkably the album was written without a specific singer in mind, in fact there is a demo version, where Marco sings all of the songs. The band then engaged Anette Olzon who performed the published version of the album and the next one "Imaginaerum". Unfortunately Anettes live performances were often overshadowed by lesser or greater illnesses and troubles with her voice. So it really took the change to their last singer, Floor Jansen, to bring the Poet and the Pendulum to the perfection it deserved when they performed it in the London Wembley Arena in December 2015.
This version with lyrics you can find here: th-cam.com/video/iEzZRMthhXU/w-d-xo.html. You will either need to stop it several times or alternatively when it gets blocked to request to unblock it. Both of these methods have worked for a lot of reactors already, so it should work for you, too :-)
    Have fun!.

The song is about the formation of the solar system then the Earth itself. The overlaid narration is Richard Dawkins, noted English ethologist, evolutionary biologist, and author. There is a version of this same video available on TH-cam with English lyrics to help follow along.

What one of us doesn't have an existential need to be remembered. To believe the universe will continue and we will leave a mark.
I get teary eyed when Floor cries out, "As one, United!"

Nightwish - poet and the pendulum live at wembley. If you havn't followed the Anette periode you need to know that this song is about tuomas periode after kicking Tarja out of the band. He was hated by the fans and got depressed on the verge of suicidal. The way Floor brings the emotions into that song is so masterful. That song is so hard for tuomas to perform that they avoid doing it live. To see him sing into the sky when its performed and to see Marco and emppu supporting him at the end is just insane and emotional. I tear up every god damn time Even though ive watched it like 50 times.

another great reaction,. The hint of Metallica you heard there was intentional. Tuomas never thought he would be in a metal band when he was growing up, he was leaning more to folk music. From what I understand he was an exchange student in the states got to go and see a metallica concert and was hooked ever since.

Just by the way the instruments Troy plays on this are "Low Whistle", "Uilleann pipes" (Basically the Irish version of a bagpipe with a mellower tone.), and bouzouki (An 8 string Greek instrument in the mandolin family).

Uilleann pipes (pronounced like Gillian without the G) are a sort of bagpipe but with the big bonus that you can drink and talk when using them.. you inflate them with a bellows under the elbow. Uilleann means elbow.

You may find a problem uploading The Poet and the Pendulum. I know you told him not to talk but it may be a good video for him to pause and talk now and then to avoid copyright. Also if you want to know the words and don't choose the Wimbley live with lyrics you can hit the closed caption and the lyrics will be on the bottom for you to read along. Good luck getting that video up as a few have had some issues.

You can make pauses in the viewing, and then you can freely talk of your impressions so far - many reactors do that. That way you don't have to bottle the emotions up till the end, you don't have to worry about forgetting something and you don't have to cut off the dog frolicking there. It just gives thee a cute homey addition. Like some reactors get their kids interrupting them, and it's just heart-warming - like your grandson start here. Allow yourself to be as natural as can be, then you don't have to control blurts, chattering and so on.
The pausing also helps that your video won't get so easily taken down: it happens with some videos. The Poet & Pendulum is best to watch from the Wembley concert, some other versions have been taken down from some reactors.
