  • Its an alternative to the cat can stove if you have a larger pot. Using a tuna can stove can give a great flame pattern, great stability, and still only 1.5 oz's.

    This is so much easier than the "precision engineered" Foster beer can or soda can stoves. IOW, this stove is not only sturdier, but within the limits of my patience to make. Thanks.

    Greetings from England. Love the simplicity of this stove, much more stable than beer can stoves and that you can simply place the pan/kettle on top. Genius. Nice no-frills presentation.

    so if the holes have to line up don't drill the side holes until after assembly. that way they will line up with no duplication of effort and the assembled stove will be a more sturdy thing to drill into.

    • @All_Things_Out_Doors
      @All_Things_Out_Doors  7 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      George B. Wolffsohn your right but when you try that the inner can folds because of being flimsy tin when the drill bit hits it. I'm sure someone who uses a drimmel or maybe more skilled could have managed that but for me the effort really wasn't that strenuous. :-)

    Thanks for the idea. Have made many Cat Can, and aluminum beverage can stoves. Impressed by the way that you've adapted the cat can concept to tuna cans. I believe that the principle can be carried a bit farther by using a canned chicken, or potted meat tin if an even greated diameter is required, for larger pots ... thanks for the useful video ... Cheers.

    You can just drill the holes after they are compacted together, it will be stronger to drill through. I also put some cotton balls or any 100% cotton fabric in side. That works great if you will be traveling so it doesn't spill... Nice video thanks.

  • @eccosselion
    @eccosselion 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Hi a little tip,pack some fibre glass will inside of the stove,that way the alcohol will be absorbed into the fiberglass wool,and stop it from slushing about inside the stove on the move,and also saves the alcohol that is left inside the stove after use by not wasting it trying to pore it back into a container after being in use.

    • @IronHexacyanoferrate
      @IronHexacyanoferrate 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Actually your tip is even better than just preventing the fuel from sloshing, since it’ll also prevent a potential explosion caused by alcohol vapours combusting very quickly.

    Search for penny stove they make them out of soda cans. It’s really easy it’s got alcohol in it. You can put insulation in them to hold the alcohol. They tend on leaking if they fall over. It’s an easy fun way to make one.

      you can also use the rope that you sometimes find for sealing the doors on wood burning stoves. It won't burn, can handle the high temperatures and will absorb the alcohol so it will not slosh around.

    • @xenaguy01

      However, it also prevents you from recovering unburned alcohol fuel. You can't pour alcohol back into the bottle if it's soaked into some kind of filler.

    Interesting design but as another commenter suggested. Drill the holes, at least for the inner can after it is inserted. Also the obvious question. Most backpackers, which honestly is the biggest reason for using an alcohol stove, are concerned about weight. Why on earth would you want to carry an over sized and in the case of the one shown, very heavy pot?

Just wondering two things and please bear with me, as I am New to making these: 1) if super cat 🐱 stove is open on top, is the advantage of being closed on top top aid in stability? 2) what is the smallest size diameter pots can this stove accomodate ? Bradley Mann I don't know that there is any advantage on Burn time. The main cause of putting the can inside as a top lid was really strengthened up the side walls; Tin bends extremely easy. If you look at the pot I put on top of the stove at 55 seconds I've actually used that stove and pot combination it works pretty well. But for wider pots that are out there a wider base seems to be way more stable.

    An alternative would be a Fancy Feast type tuna can stove - that's the one where you insert a somewhat smaller and taller can inside to act as the stand, and fill the gap between them with wicking material. The Fancy Feast is a good balance between efficiency, safety and ease of use, and it works exceptionally well in the cold. So it's become a favourite of many experienced users.

    thank you for this video. i have lots of tuna cans :-) and will make a stove like this now. i live in switzerland and we don't have this HEET for fuel here. and denaturated alkohol is very expensive here too. is it possible to take petroleum, the one you can buy for petromax oven? thank you for helping me

      I don't know about that .....I would be leary about how much of a flame it could produce....I will say what ever you try start off with very small amounts for safety sake. Rubbing alcohol may be a better choice.

    You are doing it wrong, first insert the upper can and then drill them, you get perfect outside holes, but good work still.

    No entendí nada pero me gustó la estufa. Quisiera saber si el alcohol es al 70 ó 90%. Gracias.

    Tuna can stove: why not put the top and bottom together, then drill your holes? Garanteed to line up and save an awkward step
