    I know this is an older video now but this may help people who are looking into doing this mod, those two thin yellow and black wires are to do with voltage drop sensing at the end of the cable, it is there to regulate the power supply load and essentially keep it at exactly 12v whatever the conditions, all you need to do is connect the small black wire to the larger black wires at the end of the cable and it will let the power supply know any voltage drop or loss on the cable and therefore it can regulate itself back up to 12v. you can ignore the small yellow wire as from my testing it's just tied at the PCB to the same point as the larger yellow wires.
    Now another interesting comment I saw is with the use of resistors inside the power supply you can actually use the R_SENSE line (the little black cable which terminates inside the power supply as a grey cable on the R_SENSE solder pad) to trick it into providing upto 13.4 volts (handy for amateur radio/CB radio) but I haven't confirmed that myself yet, and one last handy tip is if you are confident in opening the power supply you can cut the red and blue cables right at the source and just connect the two pins on the PCB together with some solder to act as a power on bridge.

    Awesome! I found one of these in the electronics bin in my building. I knew nothing about it, just a big fat power brick attached to a broken xbox 360. Jackpot!

    I just scooped up the 175W OEM version off the curb along with 3 fully loaded computers that were all in the persons basement when the recent “hurricane” came thru and put some water on their stuff... I usually grab ANY of these types of devices so I can tinker with them in the exact same way you are, so I can definitely appreciate your video and the SUPER clear instructions!! As for the “water damage” I think it’s pretty obvious that in MOST cases, these types of devices can still live on as long as they weren’t plugged in when the water hit... So I wasn’t turned off by it in any way, especially since it was fresh water, not sewer backup.
    I opened it up, mopped up any visible water while fully disassembling everything, and just left it all out for a day in front of a fan.. Once I knew everything was aired out & dry, I did a more detailed cleaning & inspection, and powered it up. I got the yellow indicator light (which means ALL OK, STANDING BY) and then came here for IDEAS!!
    I had NO CLUE that there were 3 output variations with these. I don’t get WHY... Is it just different outputs for different 360 releases?
    Just for laughs, I clicked the first Amazon link and found the aftermarket 205W version for $60!! Which is a bit shocking for an item meant to power something SO obsolete, wouldn’t you say?
    I probably have just under 20 PC PSU’s at this point - None with an output higher than 350w - and have been DYING TO turn some of them into adjustable bench PSU’s or use them for other creative/useful purposes. Ironically, one of the computers left outside with this Xbox brick was pretty “kitted out” so it had a 470W PSU with REALLY HIGH amp ratings, so the itch to create a new PSU has only gotten far worse since.
    Do you have any advice on making computer PSU’s into awesomeness??
    I will actually check your other videos, but if you never did one, PLEASE CONSIDER IT because I LOVE your concise yet simple method of explaining things and I have yet to find a video on PC PSU’s that are easy to understand....
    THANKS!!!!!

    Excellent video. The second yellow and black wires are to sense the voltage at the end of the wire. In this way the regulator accounts for the voltage drop of the wiring. You will notice those two wires are thinner. You can also use those with a voltage divider to very slightly increase the output voltage, though there is a built-in 10-ohm resistor that ties the sens+ to + internally. Easy hack: Pull-down the voltage of the Sens+ wire until the internal smt 10-ohm resistor fails. Now make a voltage divider (5k resistor from minus to a variable 2K resistor, center tap to sens+, and other side of variable resister to plus). Leave sens- tied to minus. Your power supply can now deliver between 11.7V and 14.9V. Above 14.9V triggers failsafe. The smt 10-ohm resistor can be removed manually, but this is a bunch of work as it is located on the lower corner of the vertical board in the middle of the power brick under the heat sinks. You can make very minor adjustments (like 0.5V) without removing/killing the resistor. Note that drawing 16.5A at 14.9V will put a higher wattage load on the power supply and produce more heat than the manufacturer intended since it is "current" limited, not "power" limited.

    3:53 - The only thing on the screen that I don't have the exact same version of is the soldering iron lol.. I have that exact box of heat shrink (Harbor Freight wasn't it?), those green pliers and snips, that same wire stripper, the PSU and even that lighter lol... But good stuff. This is gnarly. I've been playing around with electrolysis and I was needing a PSU with higher current. I found some big power brick that I found in a dumpster years ago that says it's for some kind of medical device but it wasn't working from bloated capacitors, my old ATX power supply wasn't working either and I found another PC PSU in the shed but it's full of dust and leaves. So I looked in an old box and there was a bunch of busted/destroyed/disassembled Xbox 360s, controllers, parts and a power supply - one of the 14.2 amp ones. I thought, "Jackpot!". Nice high current plus, it's a lot easier to modify than a PC power supply. I was mainly just watching to see if there were any special considerations to take into account.

    Just what I needed and more. Thanks!!
    Curious about one thing though. I read a thread where someone used a 90 ohm resistor (that’s what he has on hand) on those 5v leads to create a small load vs just shorting them out.
    Is that really necessary and have you ever had any issue with shorting those wires ? Cheers.

    • @richardlloydusa

      I keep them permanently shorted but it's only 5V, as simple toggle switch would work fine. Personally I use the switch on the power bar or I just unplug it. Thank you so much for commenting. I appreciate it greatly. All the best.👍😀

    If you short out the 12 volt, those 5 volt " power ok" wires with a switch, WILL reset the brick, if you short out the 5 volt to ground, you will have to unplug it from the wall to reset it. I'm not sure why you did not test this method, as it is very well known. But Either Way, Great Video, I enjoyed the detail, and it gave me some ideas for when I take my Next brick apart, for the price of these, making a bench power supply is so much cheaper than buying one lol. 12 Volt 5 amp for what these days $60+? and you can get these xbox bricks for 20 or less at most pawn shops

    Wow, that is one heavy duty supply, great video, thanks for sharing! I noticed the yellow and black insulation melted and receded back quite a way when being soldered together, may be something just to be careful of. Also, can I ask were the 4 yellow lines originally commoned together in the main brick or were they isolated?

  • @tihogro4350
    @tihogro4350 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Double ground and positive wires to that left pin are not for extra power. That is voltage stabilisation (cable loss compensation)

    • @tihogro4350
      @tihogro4350 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So, you can basically put 10m wires and extend these 2 wires separate, put them at the end of the 10m wire and will stabilise 12.2V at the end, no matter how much loss you have on the 10m wire (in some point the protection will come ON).

    Question for you, so when you plug in that power supply is that fan supposed to kick on right away? I have a issue w my Xbox was told that the power supplies give it a red light either a fan or maybe other stuff inside.

    • @richardlloydusa
      @richardlloydusa  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The fan turns on when it needs to and it is variable so you may not hear it on the low temp side. If unplugging the power supply from the wall and the output side for 5 minutes does not reset it when you plug it into just the wall again I would go shopping for a new (used) one. Thank you for watching and commenting. I appreciate it greatly. All the best.👍😀

      My XBOX 360's fan turns on as soon as I hit the power button, it's running slow but speeds up when the XBOX gets warmer. After 4 hours of playing GTA 5, the fan is quite loud and at full speed. That's when I know it's time to stop playing 😂

    Can you make a separate output for the 5V line? Can it output 5V and 12V at the same time? I want to use this as a power supply for both a plating setup and electrolysis.

    • @richardlloydusa
      @richardlloydusa  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes you could do both 12V and 5V but you would have to add something called a buck converter here is an example from eBay (affiliate links): ebay.to/2WuZkpN This will convert the 12V to 5V. Make sure you get a buck converter that will supply the amperage you require. I will be doing a video on a 2.5A buck/boost converter which can either be a buck or boost converter (really cool) at eBay:ebay.to/2L0LCWl (affiliate links are no extra cost to you and they support my channel. Thank you for using them) Thank you so much for watching and commenting. I appreciate it greatly. All the best.👍😀

They are very handy and can handle a wide range of DC input voltages and output a wide range of DC output for a very cheap price. I love them. I just ordered 4 more units from China. It can easily power 1 50 watt 12V bulb for as long as you need and if you wanted you could run up to four of them at the same time. The limit is 203 watts so you would be at the limit with 4 bulbs. Thank you so much for commenting and watching. I appreciate it greatly. Subscribe, Click The Bell and stay tuned! All the best.👍😀

      @@richardlloydusa Well with that kind of amperage I would have no trouble charging a car battery or even using it to crank it over then! Is that correct?

    • @richardlloydusa
      @richardlloydusa  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Mine has 15 Amp max. Most cars require 500 Amp+ to crank so this by it's self would not do it and most likely trying would just cause the unit to trip off. But you can connect it to a 12V battery charger Iike I show here: th-cam.com/video/4Iey_qXxAmk/w-d-xo.html here: th-cam.com/video/ZA3aivsR7DY/w-d-xo.html and here: th-cam.com/video/xREp4T2hKIM/w-d-xo.html If your goal is charging or jump starting cars, I would suggest that you consider a 12V charger like this at Amazon(paid):amzn.to/4575Rs0 and a Jump start system such as this at Amazon(paid): amzn.to/3PA4FYr
      I hope that helps. Thank you again for commenting and watching. I appreciate it greatly. Subscribe, Click The Bell and stay tuned! All the best.👍😀

    Hello I watched your video and Shorted the wires it goes to green but when I turn off the plug it shows the red light for a sec then it shut off. Is it ok or I did something worng . It would be nice If you clear my thoughts. otherwise it's outputting 12v . Can you charge car battery with it.

    • @richardlloydusa
      @richardlloydusa  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      As long as it supplies 12V and shuts off you should be good. If you're worried check the voltage as it shuts down. I suspect it will be fine but check to be sure. You need 12.9V to charge a Lead Acid Car battery. Check this out: www.powerstream.com/car-battery-faq.htm#:~:text=What%20voltage%20is%20required%20to,automobile%20battery%20is%20very%20slow.

      @@richardlloydusa Thanks man for guiding me . My plan was to charge car battery with this power supply. But when I use this power supply charge directly. The 12v lead acid battery reverse the voltage. When the power supply plug is removed . and green light Is turn by the battery I don't know what is happening. think should get a battery charger.

      Good plan on the charger. Check out my video on using a car battery to run a Modem, Router and a Laptop for emergency situations: th-cam.com/video/IpjZ5RvZtK4/w-d-xo.html

    Can I wire a 175watt and a 203watt together in parallel?

    • @richardlloydusa
      @richardlloydusa  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I would not recommend doing that. I have studied and researched this in the past and every source said NOT to do it because of possible damage to both power supplies. Thank you for watching and commenting. I appreciate it greatly. All the best.👍😀

    Are u sayin this can be used as a inverter?

    • @richardlloydusa
      @richardlloydusa  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's a reverse inverter. It turns AC into DC voltage. An inverter takes DC and turns it into AC. That is not the function of this device, it does the exact opposite. Thank you for watching and commenting. I appreciate it greatly. All the best.👍😀

    thise double wires go to the gpu

    • @richardlloydusa
      @richardlloydusa  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for that information. It looks to me like it was a mod to the original design. They needed to get more current to the GPU and decided to add an extra wire as opposed to using an thicker wire to do the job. It works either way as I soldered them all into one. Thanks again for the feedback and commenting. All the best.
