Great vid Richard, did you do any speed tests before and after vpn?
Yes I did do some speed tests, but the VPN speeds you get will vary greatly as there are many variables to consider. The two biggest factors will be router speed (CPU. memory and networking speed), second would be your Internet bandwidth, distance to the server you're connecting to and the bandwidth between you and it, and lastly load on the VPN server and it's bandwidth out to the Internet. In my tests for instance my Samsung Note 20 Ultra 5G was far faster using the Proton Free VPN App than connecting to the configured router. Primarily I believe that's because the CPU and memory in my Samsung has a 3.09 GHz 8 core processor where the R7000 has a 1 GHz Dual core processor and is much older tech. VPN packets are very heavy! I may make a video on this subject as I'm interested in seeing what I can do to speed it up. My main reason for the video, as an aside was security, value and convenience but I will look into making it faster. Thank you so much for commenting, watching and the very kind words. Yes I did. The tests were run while being connected to the one of the LAN ports on the R7000 with the Free Proton VPN account connected. I did not include a test while being connected through WIFI (I forgot) but I did test it afterwards and there was no difference in the IP Leak tests. the question is how much bandwidth do you lose using a vpn?
I have a VPN once and lost a substantial amount of internet speed and I called the VPN provider and the tech said you can always expect to lose a third of your bandwidth which is just unacceptable
