I assume you did eventually figure out that standard starting procedure on British motorcycles is to pull the clutch in, kick it over to free up the plates and then turn the ignition on. I enjoy your videos. I have been restoring British bikes for years and I have always believed it's a do-it-yourself hobby. I could not recommend any shop to rebuild an engine. As you mentioned, Triumph engines are pretty easy. All the best!
Yeah, I tried that too. I think we are in agreement on both counts!
I've heard a case where a guy took his Triumph to a shop for a service and they stole his good engine parts and gave him back a clunker.
The owner had the same bike.
I'm 80. I've owned about 20 bikes. I've taken one bike to a dealership, my first bike a '63 Sportster purchased used when I got out of the Army in '67. Although I don't recall having a bad experience at that time, I learned how to take care of my bikes myself. I currently own a '98 Shadow 1100 ACE. I'll set the thing on fire before I take it to a dealership, if I can't fix/repair it myself. I simply don't trust them.
Doesn't matter what you've got for us next week Dave, I'm sure we'll all enjoy it!!!☝👌
Thank you so much!
When I worked in the industry (HD Master Tech) I worked on everyone's bike as if it were my own. All the guy's I worked with took a lot of pride in doing good work for our customers. Not many shops like that anymore, auto shops are no better. Hard to find good , honest people now days. There are a few, but it seems pretty rare.
With all the Triumph's of that era that I was around were ruined when people "chopped" them and totally messed up the electrical system
"No clutch. No air in that front tire either, Dave!
Another awesome Tee shirt Dave, I was at that race.
Tony D. was our local guy but, I was cheering for Rocket Rex on the Harley !
I can't get the local bike shops to even change tires right let alone do any work.
I'd only buy one of these Triumphs from someone I knew personally.
They are not abuse tolerant.
When I want to buy a Ducati, I take an Aspirin and lie down.
I have at least one customer a month that comes in and tells me about getting scammed by another shop. I pride myself on doing the best job possible at a reasonable price, but the prices on these parts now are just getting ridiculous. Great shirt BTW
Randy's Cycle Service in Virginia for vintage bikes is excellent. Randy did work on my 1964 CL72. Gave me an estimate and came in under it and top quality.
Thankfully with Classic Triumphs there is excellent parts availability and information. Still doesn't stop the Bad Eggs and bad taste they leave behind. These bikes can be reliable and the 350's and 500's are tough engines to start with.
Great idea, but most of the one's I know are all retired....cheers
another 5 years for me then I join them
I have been the owner of two one owner Triumphs. The first was a 1969 Tiger 650. It was orange and had an original wind screen he had purchased when he purchased the bike in Germany in 1970 to travel around. He then had the bike shipped back. It was in pretty rough condition when I got it as he had not done anything with it for 20+ years. I restored it to good running condition and rode it for a year then sold it to get another one to restore. I purchased a 1970 Triumph 650 which was the bike I always wanted. I fully restored that bike and love riding it today.
Giving Kudos to the good ones and not burning the bad ones will do wonders for your image and might even help with keeping you out of court.
It is very hard nowadays even with your own personal skills in motorcycling not to get screwed, because trust is something that is earned not given. people need to be accountable for there actions in business. Doing a network of qualified people that work on engines etc is a great idea, This will weed out the bad ones for sure. Great video, Thanks
i have been thinking about my experiences with cycle shops..i cant recommend one.only bad ones..my grandfather always said if you want something done right do it yourself..i cant tell you how many times i say that to myself working on things
Ken Oconnor Racing in Connecticut. He has done two dirtbike motors for me and one for my cousin. Two KDX’s and a CR250. Full rebuilds and one of the KDX’s was really rough. Ken is no BS old school machinist and engine builder. I would recommend him to work on anything.
The way I’ve always freed up stuck clutch plates is to get the bike going down the road in first or second gear, pull the clutch in and gas it at the same time you hold the rear brake down. It may sound crazy but it works most of the time.
Dave, Thanks again for all your content. Great idea to compile a list of good ,reliable individuals that are capable of doing the proper work.Still somehow the bad guys should be weeded out. Are you going to York this year? If you have any PMP shirts for sale in size large I would like to buy one. I still have my original one from that day but it is too small. Let me know. Thank you
Yes. I'll try to remember to bring them. I only made 25.
Hi Dave
It is all about you when you contact these places, they google your address then they find out how much your shop worth and your property taxes than they give you estimate or invoice for example i get chlorin for swimming pool price is getting higher every day and once i complained the answer was how many people got swimming pool you have to pay what they say, Dog eat Dog. Happy new year, cheers.
Rolling start, been there done that.I know nothing about Rickmans but thats a cool looking and sounding bike.Cool tshirt with vintage red sleeve trim!
Sounds like you might be in NCFL. I’ve used Stuart’s Cycle in Gainesville many times over the years. They are without question my only go to cycle shop. They’ve been in business locally for over thirty five years. Roland and Chuck can do just about anything. I’ve thrown them many a curveball over the years and they’ve hit it out of the park. Japanese and HD mainly. I think they work on anything though. Good luck. Liked the video.
Hey Dave,
For 2 Stokes, we highly recommend the Moto Monk in Lakeland FL. He does amazing work and has incredible attention to detail. He's highly qualified with years of experience. In fact, he's the only engine builder/machine shop we use!
I remember a TV show from possibly the late nineties to the early 2000s about a Scottish guy who worked on British bike's and he was in NY plus there was Russell? Another British man who built custom British bike's, maybe look and see if they are still trading.
Thanks Cave.
how do you know if the "good" reviews are not from business liars
Go to the lowest rating and see how many there are and how reasonable the review is.
If the guy complains about a spark plug being $10 then you know that he might be a bit unreasonable.
I recommend VOZ Cycles in Wheatfield NY (Niagara Falls area) for Harley repairs and other brands.
Four grand for a rebuild isn't a horrible price...if they did it right and they did everything down to the sludge trap. There's not a lot of guys that work on the old stuff, so it sucks to find out some of them aren't good. You should talk to Jared Weems and see who he would recommend in Florida.
AJ Richter of Richter Machining in Marne Iowa seems like he knows his stuff when it comes to old British bikes. He has a Yoube Channel called Dirty Shirt Richter. He does a lot of the machining work for Baxter's Cycle. If I needed a crank balanced, he'd be the guy I'd send it to.
yup 2 good recommendations there!
Ken oconner racing in ct. Honest work . Cylinder and head work done.
Seem like you pretty good guy. Sorry your having issues with so called professionals. I don't do allot of rebuilding, i have built some sportser hotrods using hammer performance kits and have had good luck with them
Some engine builders won't build a motor unless new rods are installed and i agree,i wouldn't trust Conrods that are 50yrs old.
I dunno. One should look inside first methinks.
I do not see the T shirt you gave away this week in your store - do you sell that particular shirt? Link?
As to the good / bad and ugly shops - I do everything possible to "control the things you can control" and therefore - do most myself. I hate taking any bike work to others. Machine shop, good welder, competent electrician...There like gold.
MY BEST ADVICE 71. HERE. FIND GOOD RUNNING BIKES OLD BUT STRONG. BUY A SECOND ONE FOR PARTS. AVOID ALL THE RIPPING OFF. BUY PARTS AT SWAP MEETS
LEARN MECHANICS. YOU GOT MONEY TO BURN GO TO A SHOP.
sounds like you have more money than sense.....4k to rebuild a Triumph motor? that's a joke,....there's an old saying; 'if you want something done do it yourself'
PS look at Market place, the guy selling the RE Constellation 750 and Kawasaki W2 is the guy you can trust.
Im'm from springfield mass, do you remember hogan's cycle? he only did bultaco's and cagiva's he died a few years ago
Bob Hogan is still around. He has been selling off his parts bikes and part collection recently
I need a blinker control module box for a 78 Suzuki gs 1000 .
Just add blinker fluid!
Find a good machine shop but rebuild your own engines.
Hey ! Love the channel 😊👍 STANDSTILL WITH THE CAMERA ALREADY ! I'm getting dizzy 😮😮😮
Yeah, I had to dub it multiple clips because of sound issues. I wasnt wearing the microphone in some clips.
You have had some true bad luck, There is one guy in NSB that we all trust, another in Daytona. Look forward you coming to our new swap meet at the Volusia fair grounds during bike week.
I had a 71 trump not long ago and sold it because of the electric issues
Hey Dave, you know what to me that sounds like honest every other bike you bought so far or there was no key and you having to replace the key switch so he could start the bike or a hotwiring. This is Eric from Oceanside, California.
Yes, vintage bike scene. Know who you are working with
As society collapses, inflation takes hold, this means the purchasing power of currency declines So your 4k of money sounds a lot but at 120 per hour, In my day 4k got you a house So short cuts tend to become the norm, I just give one task to a shop and see how they go ,,, Most shops around me are barely able to change oils ON saying that I do know some very good engineers here in Japan
Dawson had told me stories about that place!
Have you thought about contacting Weems up in Tampa for Triumph work? No personal contact but he seems to know what he’s doing. 👍
All adventure riders definitely 2/xl shirt size. Just saying. Good video bro.
Where in Florida are you located brother?
Edgewater FL, Near Daytona.

Got cha. I’m in Sebring
I need a Suzuki guy, I have 2 TS185 that need crank seals
@@paulduplantis1491 I don't think you need to split the cases. But you might need a bearing puller to pull the drive gear on the primary drive side. Look at a parts diagram. The other side is easier. But you got to mark timing before pulling the stator, so you don't loose it
Dave, I bought a t-shirt from you before. Do you have anymore of the Seipstown shirts for sale? Sponsored by Allentown Suzuki.
I didnt really make them specifically to sell, I only made 25, but I'll bring what I have to York. Where are you from?
Hey dave when you gonna get that t 150 running?
Waiting for the title. That's one where the VIN was off by one digit but Mecum promised a title for it. I won't work on it until I get a title in case they decide to take it back.
@@bullpencyclesagain a reason to stay away from mecum! 😮
Mate, its hard to keep trust in people when you know your stuff.
you got a lot of stuff
I forgot how dirty they did you on the Z1 😡
My advice is to stay away from Mecum 😂
Watching your rickman video, try kicking the bike with clutch lever pulled in and kick it through to free clutch on all bikes, it could save your life. I'm looking 1974 moto guzzi sport parts, please in your travels let know
Yeah, I did that later. The plates are stuck. Will free them up!
If Mecum made him buy the Rickman Z1 back why is it still with you?…..
Its not. I have a BSA rickman and a Triumph Rickman, is all.
Be careful some useless workshop don't praise themselves in the comments.
... SCAMMERS, LIARS AND CON ARTISTS ...?.... its called " MARKETING" Dave .. wink wink ..!
Yeah, today I am afraid you are right!
Database Would be a Great idea. 👍

Make “INTEGRITY” Great Again!
Boy that's some irony.
I never return to the dealer, do all my own maintenance and work.
Totally understand! But boy I wish I could trust more!
The way I’ve always freed up stuck clutch plates is to get the bike going down the road in first or second gear, pull the clutch in and gas it at the same time you hold the rear brake down. It may sound crazy but it works most of the time.
