If you’ve ever had the pleasure of installing one of these kits it is an absolute pain in the ass and nothing fits how it’s supposed to and they will tell you that you will have to cut and modify almost every part
Man I have to say I love your respect for these bullnose trucks. I absolutely love idi trucks. I don’t care if they’re NA or turbo. I have one of each and I love them both. One of mine has the ats turbo kit and it has new injectors and a newer a newer Injection pump and it will go pretty fast (it still has the 4 speed). I love the bullnose trucks, they’re so simple to work on, such a beautiful body style and they’re even better when you hear the rattle of a 6.9. So thankyou for bringing attention to these trucks because I thing the idi diesels are a very “forgotten” era of pickup trucks. They are very underrated and people don’t have respect for the old iron, you gotta think these are the vehicles that helped build America so we gotta keep ‘em alive for as long as we can, not to mention they’re just badass
Man that’s awesome and well said. I have an 86 F259 with an 89 7.3 n/a swapped in. I hope that in the next 2-5 years that I’ll have a turbo kit, zf5 or zf6, and a couple of other odds and ends to go along with those upgrades (like another filter along the rail, an electric pump+regulator, an intercooler, a 90cc injector pump and the proper injectors. Realistically it’ll still be an n/a 7.3 with a C6 but at least I plan on working it
But yes like you I think these particular diesels (maybe not so much the body style) are under appreciated and to many people are overshadowed by the more modern diesels. Just look at the machine shops and mechanic shops that won’t touch this motor because because of how unfamiliar they are. It really is up to us to keep them going. The 6.9/7.3IDI may not be the most powerful but the international harvester adds a cult member every time a new person purchases and drives one of these.
@@AtomsForFuel haha I liked the way you said it adds a new cult member lol, but you’re right, most people when they get these trucks they fall in love with them, I’m a very mechanically inclined person and I love the trucks because of how easy they are to work on, anything that is an all mechanical engine is great in my opinion because there’s no electronics to fail on you, and plus the styling is amazing
Nice, im planning on putting one of these in one of my Cyberpunk cars im going to design, and im gonna use this until I can upgrade to either a DURAMAX (i love japanese diesels) or a 6.7 lol.
$3,500 is a pretty reasonable price for a well thought out kit like that, at least you know everything is gonna fit and work . Time is money and if you’re ordering everything separately and modifying stuff to make it work you’re gonna have a pile of hours into a project like that.
Love the video love the truck well done, no problem with no intercooler on a low power setup like that, intercooler or not you won’t gain or loose any noticeable spool.
I'm brand new to the IDI world. But I love it already. I just picked up a pretty clean 7.3 IDI 1989 F-350 with manual stock trans. I suspect I'd need to do a ZF-5 swap to really enjoy the turbo? Or would I find it worth the investment without doing that? I get that's a really subjective question, and I welcome others to comment. I'd just hate to put that $ to it and end up going well I'm not sure that was worth the hassle and the money.
The turbo will be most enjoyable in 4th gear, (1:1 ratio) regardless of transmission. However, doing a ZF5 swap will make the whole truck more enjoyable as you'll be able to do highway speeds.
Had an 87 super duty rollback that I swapped the front clip to a 95 and put the banks sidewinder and it actually would out pull my bros. 99 450 powers trike rollback and running 65-70 with 2 cars it would get 17-19 mpg and 22-23 empty. Most reliable wrecker I've ever had.
It is over. Sometimes we have videos we are filming for TH-cam during giveaways and the trucks still need to be picked up. If you go on our channel you can see the winner picking it up.
Nice video, thanks for saying were you bought the factory cold air intake because my truck came with the banks turbo kit but was also missing the air intake.
Input Needed! So I have a complete donor 2004 Ram with a running Cummins and a 93 F SuperDuty NA IDI ZF5 rollback that I use daily for towing. Would you do the swap or the banks kit? Would've liked to see more of the kit but nice video anyways.
There's no way I'd ever spend $3,500 on a turbo kit, I don't even think I'd spend that much on a whole truck. In 1984 I bought a brand new super cab diesel SRW 4x4 with the 6.9L. It was an okay truck but nothing great. The two things I regretted about that truck was the engine and the 4x4. I should have bought a 300 six gas engine 4x2 and I'd likely still have it. The biggest issue I had with it, other than a recall that replaced the engine in 1985 for a crack at 8k, was the lack of power and difficulty finding fuel back then. Around town there were no diesel pumps, to get fuel I had to drive to a truck stop and hope that I happened on a station with diesel when traveling. It towed okay but I got tired of dealing with the return line leaks, fuel filter issues, glow plugs and glow plug relay every winter and it seemed to eat batteries. My 88 7.3 was better but not by much but that was bought used with almost 40k on it long after the '83 had been traded in. The reality is that you can find good running Cummins 12v motors out there for less, often with a transmission as well. I just bought a 6BT with 99k on it with an Eaton Fuller 6 speed, in chassis from a wrecked F800. I gave $1,200 for the whole thing. Its going to find its way into the next rust free F250 or F350 I find that has factory air, older than 1996.
So I bought a 1986 F 350 Bucket truck. It has only 90000 miles on it and is in very good shape. Would it be worth putting this turbo kit on? My plan is to remove the bucket and the tool box and turn it into a flat bed. . . I would like more power but would I also need to re-gear the rear end? Love the show, thanks 👍👍
My 85 f300 looks opposite of yours lol. I have a dually dana 60 front, and running the 10.25 single wheel rear. Trade you rear axles lol. I call it a f300 because it started as a f250, then swapped f350 axles in. Still has f250 springs in rear, and f250 badges
Banks kit at the flywheel would bw about 260hp and 500lbfr. Rear wheel testing is i think 235hp 375lbft and yes it is by far worth it. They're fun stock turbos male a huge difference. @miketonon7946
F@#k yeah man! I have a bunch of these trucks 13 6.9idi trucks and 8 7.3 idi trucks! Bought most when they would go to scrap or online out of people's back yards wherever. Lol
I will admit the old idis with proper glow plugs would start every time, but, 12v are easier to work on, and parts are more easily available and less expensive
I can't say I agree. When I had my 90 IDI, injectors were 20 bucks a piece on eBay, and they hardly ever died but I replaced them as part of an entire fuel system refresh (prior owner let the truck sit for years) and the glow plugs came as a kit for about 50 bucks on a bad day through AutoZone. Now might be different than 10 years ago when I had mine but it can't be that different. The only real drawback of the idi is air. There's always an air leak somewhere in the fuel system that makes it run like crap if at all.
The whole thing about the V8 diesel versus the 6 cylinder Cummins diesel is the application of what you're going to do with the truck, the Cummins diesel is going to haul a heck of a lot of weight efficiently but you're not going to get much speed out of it a V8 diesel is more for moderate weight and more highway travel.
That's all myths semi uses inline cause it's easy to piggy back the air compressor off the injection pump vs in the v on top of inlines are normally smaller than the v back in the day like the e9 or 8v92
