The only good thing about California is Proposition 13, and the weather. Prop 13 bases your property tax on the value of the assessed property when the home was purchased. And the property tax cannot increase more than 2% per year. My mother purchased her brand new 4 bedroom, two bath home, in 1969, for $28k. (Zillow says her house is now valued at about $850k.) Her property tax is $900 a year! Unfortunately, a home across the street from her is for sale. It was built in the 1940’s but has upgrades and is in very good condition. It is a two bedroom, 1 and 1/2 bath home that is on sale for $842k. The property tax on that home will be at least $10k a year!
Wow, the last house looked like it just needed some interior TLC. As you said, I'd set up my "repair shop" in the garage. I'm in central FL, but if I was closer I'd definitely look at that one!

The one near Charleston for $70k I’d buy for the land alone and just put up a manufactured home.
