I came here just to fast forward to a point to check out the mountain view and then move on, but I actually watched the entire 2 hour long video from start to finish and I don't regret a minute of it. You guys are not only great at building houses, your in front of and behind-of camera skills are also amazing. Very entertaining to watch. I'm doing some building (sheds and barns) on my own property in my free time, but I'm not a craftsman...which I really regret. I love working wtih wood and also with concrete and the physical labor outside, especially when the weather is nice. In my next life, I'll be a craftsman and build some nice houses, with a nice crew. =)
I did exactly the same. Great video
When I read your comment I was just starting to watch the video and didn't see how long the video was, went back to it and said "holy shit it really is 2 hours" and then still proceeded to watch the entire thing lol
Same PFP?
I don't know how old you are, but i can definitely tell you that it's never to late to start doing what you love
@@Marcosasf1346 I assume you meant to say "...never too late to..." and I totally agree in general. But in my case health reasons make it impossible to start a craftsman career, sadly. But I do what I can as a hobby, so I'm getting some enjoyment and satisfaction anyways. =)
I have 46 years as a carpenter. You build exactly the way I was taught. Do it with pride and do it right. Best video I've seen. Great group of guys making the content educational and funny. Loved every minute. Beautiful job.
Just watched your vid and it was great. Jamie, you inspire me. Last month I severed 3 three of my fingers rebuilding my front porch and I’ve been pretty down. My home is about 140 years old. I’m a weekend warrior, always working on something. Watching you work with your bionic hand lets me know I’ll get back to fixing things very soon. I just subscribed and I’ll keep watching you guys make beautiful homes.
I noticed his bionic hand too and thought it was awesome that he (or somebody) came up with something to allow him to keep doing the job. I hope that you too can get or come up with something to help you keep doing what you like doing. Any time something like this happens, it's not just the physical injury, it's the mental injury too. Hope you and your front porch come along just fine.
Hang in there. Its got to be so hard as the injury is not just a physical one. Alto that's probably the easiest one to fix. Give your emotional response the respect and attention it deserves. I wish you the best.
Love and rapid healing to you brother 💙💙💙

I have been a carpenter for over 35 years, the last 25 as a trim carpenter and the crew is what makes or breaks the job. Having guys you would like to go fishing with working next to you makes the work so much more enjoyable. When everyone pulls their weight nothing is too heavy.

Dude, your trailer backing skills UP the mountain are mind-boggling! Gorgeous house but more important, it looks like yall had a blast doing it! Thanks for all the tips!
I came here to say almost the same thing, he said he was about a mile from the job site, he did in in reverse with a trailer...I can't get up my 900 foot driveway with out 4 attempts!

This is a TV show
Wow building a house is no joke. So much involved and you guys do pretty much everything yourselves. Very impressive.
From a European perspective this is in fact a joke! Lol
Building a weedy foundation in a few hours is of course not going to be as good as building a full foundation plate, that could support a wet building technique with proper bricks.
I wonder how long this house is going to stay standing...
@FireSkorpion what a stupid and useless comment congratulations. Building codes are different all over. Pretty simple.
@@fireskorpion396 Probably 300 years given that foundation is essentially concrete by itself.
@@Mawyman2316 I mean the house, not the foundation
Because houses in the US have a habit of lasting what feels like a few decades
@@fireskorpion396 which is generally far longer than what the person paying for it's construction needed so it's fine. It's not a flex to build something 10000x times stronger than it needs to be, it's just bad engineering. Good engineering is building what you need with enough padding to avoid trouble, and thus costing only what's necessary. It's a huge waste of money to build something that'll last a thousand years, or even a few hundred. No one wants to waste that kind of money. American houses are built just fine; your brick houses are huge wastes of money, your money, that won't benefit you at all, but someone 300 years later. Absurd.

First time viewing your channel and loved the house build. Makes me want you fellows to come build me one! Alas I’m 80 and past that part. Husband did a lot of building. We had a farm and he taught shop class. He’s gone but can relate to you!
I thoroughly enjoyed watching this build! As a person that comes from a country where masonry is used exclusively, it is such an absolute joy to watch a timber build go up! Wow!
As a german, working in construction seeing you guys build is always fun to me. Like... we build treehouses that look more stable, yet your buildings obviously seem to work just fine.
Makes you wonder what the "best" way of doing it really is. Nice Video ^^
What is it that makes these building seem "less stable" than a tree house?
Because in germany the only thing build with plywood are treehouses and garden stuff. Also the amount of nails is horrifying for a german.
We build houses with stone and insulation. If we were to build like the firms in the US we would be cold and on fire.
Thought the same thing, but different cultures I guess.
Also in the start the concrete foundations, poured directly into the earth seemed weird to me
I'm not a builder but I've just built a house near Moscow. A house with 55 cm brick walls and 30 cm concrete floors. I was laughing when I saw how the guys poured a thin layer of concrete on the ground and called that a foundation. Climate makes a huge difference!
@@alexkachur6358 We have hot AF climate here in India but even we don't pour such shallow foundations. It goes much deeper with rebars and anchor pillars filled with concrete. No hate but its amusing to see these builds. We also have no concept of drywall / hollow walls.Bricks or concrete blocks even for internal walls all the way.
You can tell when everyone on the crew has love for each other, and the fact that you’re all talented puts it over the top!
Conversely, you can definitely understand how much can go wrong - or just slow - on a site that has either a rotating crew that changes constantly or doesn’t work well together.
Lot good looking men. Wow , paradise in the mountain top.
Im not even a carpenter. I’m in the oil business. But I’d love to work around this group of guys. This playfulness attitude on the site is refreshing but you can tell in the actual work that these guys are real pros. Love this level of camaraderie and the banter is infectious.

My neighbor have two daughters that just HAD to get kittens (one each, per the formula demonstrated on this show) that were difficult to find. My neighbor traveled from Colorado to Arizona and back for his daughters. Now I hear that folks must go back to work and give up their besties.
What is so awesome is that they all do everything. They're not just carpenters. I call that, "Cradle to Grave" construction. Nice work crew.
What I was not expecting like many others here is -not watching the whole two hours of this documentary second by second. I loved the way you form the teams for each job. Each one of you put something of your experiences into it and it really does standout for your work. Jamie is real sport here to have brains with tons of courage to never-say-no attitude.
Real team -work (err, play) for people out here who do want to but can’t afford to. Thanks for this documentation of events. 🎉
Very clever edit of the original series. You edited it in such a way that even me who watched the series was drawn in like it was a whole new build. Nice job! A carpenter who moonlights as a video editor....Who would have thunk that?.... 👍👍👍
Yeah I actually said and watched through it even though I seen the original it still felt new

I'm in college right now studying architecture. The one thing I'm starting to figure out is many architects don't understand how the building process even works, and that includes myself to a degree. I enjoyed every minute of this video and I'll definetly be watching more of your stuff!
You don't go to Architecture College to learn the "Means and Methods" of contracting. You go to expand your thoughts on design. Design in this case was truly lacking. From orientation to external angles of inclination and declination. It was a sad waste of a nice site. Anybody can be a wood hack son. Learn to think first.

I’ve been framing for 10 years in a completely different area in the US and it’s absolutely mind blowing how everything I just watched was identical to a day of work for me. The process, the mistakes and struggles, the visitors, the jokes, the rain and indecisiveness (which varies from employee to boss), except for the brands, materials and some strategies used this mirrored a typical work day. I also want to give the boss(es) some props for things like the scaffolding, you’d boys would shit your pants seeing the way we sometimes do things haha
Loved your video and did watch the whole 2 hours. I was a daddy’s girl who was always around him when he was building. He actually built the house in 1949 where grew up. Learned how to properly use tools and he taught me how to paint. All this to say to you young guys, if you have daughters, share your knowledge and skills. You are very talented and would be wonderful mentors for your children.
Done lots of residential work but this is top notch. Above and beyond at every moment. Great group of guys taking pride in their work. Wish I had a full crew taking the same pride in their work! Subscribed!
After helping design and build buildings and houses for 52 years, I am amazed you guys put raw wood supports surrounded by dirt. Even con crete is a bad idea. My suggestion is to pour a base such as a minimum 12" diameter concrete with a Simpson base plate adapter and bolt in the concrete. The Simpson base plate has an internal galvanized U-shaped plate that raises the bottom of the wood post up about 1/2 inch above the base, and helps prevent rotting. Based on your work I'm sure you know this.

This is so interesting! I live in Germany, in a wooden house as well. Not a traditional one, but a modern, timber frame construction one. However, the walls are easily three times as thick, and the floor joists are not 1x12 like in this house, but something along the lines of 4x12 (although the spacing isn't as tight), just to give one example.
Seems like we like to overbuild over here, or you like saving money a little too much.

1. This may be the most beautiful location for a house I've ever seen (North Carolina?).
2. The production and editing of this film is better than much of network television.
3. My *only* criticism is give us more of the completed house at the end, views from the house out into the valley, especially. Close-ups of all the finished features.
This was highly enjoyable. I would spend a fortune to be in that place for a weekend!

Anyways, always lovely to watch these guys work.
And no damp course!
I think the type of sub flooring sheets they use are moisture resistant. Plus, the whole floor is a couple of feet off the ground. I think that's why.
I like how you did all aspects of the build minus electrical and the fact your a family of builders quality builders at that. This was an interesting insight into building a house. It’s different to how they are built here in the UK as we tend to build the outer walls out of breeze blocks and a layer of bricks. The inner walls are built differently, with metal instead of wood. Then it is plaster board to finish the walls.
