The Astartes project is based off of the Warhammer: 40,000 (or 40k for short) universe. The Astartes (or Space Marines) are bio-engineered super warriors that serve and protect The Imperium of Man, a vast galaxy spanning human empire 40,000 years in the future. In this video, the astartes of this specific faction were hunting down the leaders of a rebellion against the Imperium. What they found was that the rebels were under the control of an unknown, psychic alien species (the spheres).
The guy in the red coat was something called a psyker, a powerful psychic individual who was able to listen in on the telepathic conversations of the spheres. The red coat with the skull in the middle of the capitol "I" meant that he was also a member of the God-Emperor's Holy Inquisition, the most powerful organization within the Imperium. He became possessed when he lost focus to warn the Astartes about what he had heard. In case you're wondering what the spheres said to each other, here it is:
Sphere 1: "Brother, I have failed."
Sphere 2: "We have all failed."
Sphere 1: "The Astartes deny our touch."
Sphere 2: "You must return, break your seal"
Sphere 1: "Impossible! We will never survive"
Sphere 2: "You must. Take them!"
The Warhammer 40k universe is VAST and deep with practically mountains of lore. It is arguably the greatest sci-fi universe ever created. You guys will not be disappointed in learning more about it. Welcome to the rabbit hole, brothers.

The big spheres were basically giant malicious artificial intelligences. “Dreadlock dude” was an inquisitor who was listening in on the conversation between the chained up one and the one on the other ship. The spheres caught wind of his eavesdropping and essentially trapped him in demonic possession through the cables when his concentration was broken. The troopers blasting his brains out as soon as this became evident was not only a mercy, but a necessity because he could have done a LOT of damage.

Fun fact: If you listen closely right after the Inquisitor is done listening to the linked orb things, before he gets possessed (12:01 - more audible in the original), he yells "Recall the Astartes!!" in his mask through his vox-caster to the higher-ranking space marine next to him, and that's when the space marine signals to the lower ranking one to run and go tell them to retreat.
When it next cuts back to the Astartes on the enemy ship, the main one we follow through the story turns his head as they tell him to retreat, but it's too late as the orb begins sucking them in seconds later.

  • @BaronVonHoovy
    @BaronVonHoovy 3 ปีที่แล้ว +176

"What is that - is that even blood?"
Yeah, it's blood, but the reason it looks weird is because of one of the Astartes' genetic modifications - that their blood clots extremely fast. Good to stop blood loss and heal quickly, but it means when their blood spills or they cough it up, it looks weird because it's already starting to clot at that point.
Also makes it crazy that the creator paid that much attention to detail, because it's a thing you wouldn't expect to see in an animation project like this, either because the creator didn't know or forgot or because it's that much more effort they have to put in compared to just a simple blood splatter.

I would say that .75 cal seems actually kinda small for a space marine but judging by the fact that every round has essentially a thruster as the propellant, it’s automatic, and we literally see them holding it down to stop the recoil, the recoil must absolutely insane.

      1. Best case scenario, dislocate the arm.
      2. Worst case scenario, tear the arm off entirely.

    • @reecedignan8365
      @reecedignan8365 3 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      So going off the weapons:
The astartes use a .75 calibre, dimantium tipped, rocket propelled, fragmentation round. Also known as the bolt rounds.
Simple way of explaining it, after being fired, the shell will ignite the mini thruster in it and speed into the target, on hitting the enemy’s armour or hide or body, the dimantium tip will penetrate it and arm the explosive charge inside. Second later as the rounds is deep in the target it will detonate and either blow out/off part of the targets body or send shrapnel deep into its organs causing severe trauma.
As for the ambusher, he is using an autocannon. So anywhere from 20mm-40mm. These are normally crew served weapons, with a 2 man team. However one can theoretically use one as a single man team.

Ok just an explanation is in order. So the main group of five we follow are called Astartes. They are like an order of Sci-fi knights. They are literal super soldiers that make Spartans look like a wet paper bag. They are trying to recover an Alien (or Xenos) artifact from a rebellion.
As for what happened in the latter half. So the guys who had the weird masks where psykers. Think of them like planet destroying Sci-fi Wizards.
Other important details, the guy in the cloak was apart of this universes secret service, those are called the inquisition. The Inquisition are the ones who gave the Astartes the mission. The reason he got his cranium splattered was because he got possessed by what ever was in that orb. It is really hard to kill them when it happens, so they get them early.
Last bit the 5 Main Atartes aren't in the orb they where teleported through the warp (don't ask) to an unknown location.
Oh yea and this all takes place in the grim dark future of Warhammer. The actual illustration of the "In Soviet Russia" meme

Type up at least a paragraph worth of setting details to go with it when I post the finished piece on an art site. Leaves ans comes back to 5 comments. The majority of comments will be "looks like ".

So this was made by one guy, on the later clips he did have some minor help from other 3D artists but it was almost entirely him.
This video is set in the Warhammer 40k universe, massive massive fantasy with rich history and lore, a battle and war focused galaxy.
The attacking group wearing armour in the video are called space marines (also known as Adeptus Astartes, hence the title), who are effectively superhuman soliders serving the imperium of man and the emperor of mankind, the ones wearing white helmets are the squad captains back on their main ship, the guy in robes kneeling with the wires is part of the inquisition and is a psyker, who are like wizards/jedi and have powers, he had the power of telepathy and was hooked up to comminicate with the orb in the room, and the attacking squad were send to connect the two orbs. We don't have any information on who was on the ship that got attacked, but we can assume they're either a servant of chaos or space pirates or traitors. The two big guys with spines coming out were robots who the orb on the ship was controlling (we think). And when they got sucked into the orb, they were sent into a space called "the warp", which is like another dimension and is inhabited by demons and we assume a demon was communicating through the orb (long story of why demons have to do that). The light that attacked the demon to save the astarties people assume was the the emperor (he's an immortal dying coprse on a golden throne, who guides humanity and keeps chaos at bay).
So much more detail, but that is the short summary, and yes, that was the SHORT summary :)

So I made this comment on InternetCity - InternetMikey & Aaron's channel and it seemed to help alot of people understand what is going on (for those who might be a bit lost). So hope it helps here (did change some things to update it)
So the most basic description that I can give is this:
The Space Marines have been tasked with retrieving an alien artifact on the enemy ship, so that they can study/deal with it, as the Space Marines basically hate anything Xeno related
On their own ship, they already have one of these alien spheres locked up, under the watch of a religious "monk"(Inquisitor) who is monitoring it to make sure it doesn't cause any havoc and to hopefully realize its purpose.
As the Marines eliminate the enemies and approach the orb, they add tech into it that is meant to limit its power, but in that moment it begins to communicate with the sphere on the Space Marines ship.
The two entities conversation is heard by the Inquisitor, who realizes that the entity is going to flee, rather than be captured, and take the Space Marine squad with it.
He then tells the Space Marine leader that the team needs to get out of there and be extracted NOW! But doing so causes his focus to waver and he is taken control of by the second entity and thus must be killed by the leader before he is turned or causes untold havoc on the ship.
The team leader gets the message but it is too late and he and his team are taken by the entity to a separate dimension. However (there are a couple of things that might have happened) the Inquisitor was able to help with his dying breath and sent out a psychic wave that frees them from the creatures tendrils. Or a warp creature sees the entity and decided to attack it, inadvertently freeing the Space Marines.
But even though they are free, they are all still teleported to an unknown world with giant skeleton statues/beings and now must figure out where they are at.
All of this is an incredibly basic explanation, and I am sure I got some of this wrong, but there are more detailed videos on TH-cam of people going over what exactly transpired and give more in-depth description about the Space Marines and the enemies they fight. Just wanted to help give a basic rundown for yah. Also the question of "are they the good guys" is.........complicated. But it is worth getting into it is one of my all time favorite universes! Hope this helps!

Perfect explanation, and to clarify the part you were not sure... It is a warp entity, that's the reason the xeno tries to take the marines as bait with him and the reason he also tells the other xeno "take them" when this one told him "we won't survive" meaning traveling in the warp. It seems these xenos raze is, which is from the Cabal (if you know that lore, it is mostly 30k) is very warp sensitive, so they live inside this balls for protection. Quick explanation like super short.
Big fuckers go to board ship to link one ball with the already captured ball. During board they fight and end up at the ball. Once they link, that priest looking dude was trying to I think understand it or control it. Once he heard it say that it was going to consume the people so they should return basically, he came out of the trance, told drippy cape dude “extract them immediately” it was muffled. This was happening at the same time they were with the orb. Before they get magnetized to the orb, he got the message to retreat but it was too late. They were saved because priest destroyed the link before they were consumed, hence the black could that ate the ball when they were tethered with those tentacles. But they were still teleported to another dimension. You can see his other comrades spawn in on the other pillars. That dimension is what the priest saw in his link before he got vibe Checked by drippy cape guy and his associate.

the "Astartes" comes from the "Adeptus Astartes" wich is the name of the organisation, but they are more commonly called Space Marines.
Space Marines are the elite Warriors of the Imperium of Man, a Galactic Empire (who's a Theocratic Totalitarian Feudal Confederacy of sorts) who spans the whole Milky Way galaxy (our galaxy) in the far future of the 41st Millenium.
thats why its called Warhammer 40.000.
SPace MArines are geneticaly modified Super Soldiers, we're talking 2 hearts, 3 lungs, can have half of their brain asleep and stay active up to 72 hours straigth, can even survive in the void of space and recover from the grieviest wounds or if needed have the missing parts replaced by new organs or bionics.
Space marines has 19 different organs implanted in them throuhg their years of training from been aspirants to full fledged battle brothers.
One of this implant called the Black carapce is set under their skin and has connection ports, that allow them to be neurally linked to their Power armors and thus move in it as if they where wearing nothing.
Power armors like in most cases are powerfull tools of protection but also support and destruction.
It can enhance the allready Super Human levels of physical strengths a Space MArines enjoys, its void sealed, can be breached only by the heaviest weaponry or anti tank weaponry, and even tho its weight over 150 kg, the immense strenght of the Space MArines with the servos of the armor and the neural link they have, makes it natural for them to wear it.
The Space Marines favorite piece of weaponry is the Bolter.
This weapon is the unholy marriage of an assault rifle and a rocket launcher.
Bolts ( the ammo) are red bull cans sized ammunition, that are self proppeled like a rocket, penetrates the target AND THEN EXPLODES, once inside, transforming anything organkic in a thin red gooy mist...
And thats their standard isse weaponry, like m4a1's are standar in the contemporary Marines...
But all of this is not nearly as fucking insane as ALL the rest of the Setting...
you guys should watch brecky's "40k factions explained" 2 parts vids, and also the Templin institute videos about the Imperium, the Astra Millitarium, Cadia, the Orks, the Tyranids, the Space Marines.
    And some fo Leutin 96
40k is one of the most insane setting, where everything is out to kill eat or rape you, and not in that particular order, where Technology is viewed as religion and magic, where you have Psychic Powers that would make Sith Lords jeally as fuck or piss their pants, and Daemons...
Cause yeah in the far future of 40k there is LITTERAL HELL, Demon Gods and Daemons in the parralel dimension clalled the Warp...
And the Warp is the 40k-verse mean of FTL travel..., just like in Event Horizon they have to punch a Hole in thge fabric of space and time, to go through LITTERAL HELL to cross the starts on vast distances...
40k is crazy and op dialed up to 11, then you bust the thing and turn it ONCE more to 11...
40k is the ONLY fictional universe, where the fans DO NOT want to life in, its just so insane and Grimdark...
*HArry potter fans* i want to go to hogwarts!
*Star Trek fans* "o wanna be in Starfleet"
*Star Wars fans" i wanna be a Jedi/Sith"
*40k fans* "...nah fam i'm good..."

So basically the little homie in the cloak is a Psyker (think weaponized psychic) working for an organization called the Inquisition, he's there to help contain any spheres they (the Retributor Astartes) capture, maybe interrogate them, that's unclear, but he's connected to the one in their possession when it reaches out to the one on the other ship, he psychically eavesdrops on them plotting to take the kill team on the ship and warns the Captain to "Recall them immediately." This brief break in concentration is enough for the thing in the sphere to break its containment, break through his defenses and crush his mind and soul like a bug and take control of his body; since this is one of the very worst things that can happen in this particular universe, his allies, the Captain and the Sergeant put him down immediately.

Fun fact: When the sphere starts pushing the Astartes back and their boots suddenly stop making sparks it's because they activated the maglock functionality built into their boots. All Astartes armor comes with built-in magnets within their boots strong enough to carry an individual Astartes' full weight.

For reference on the size of the Warhammer 40,000 universe: It is based on a table top war game of the same name. The game contains multiple races (Astartes, Imperial Guard, Sisters of Battle, Aeldari, Tyrranid, and Chaos Demons to name a few). Each faction has their own heroes, backstories, and even culture. As of writing this, there are over 350 books set in the Warhammer 40,000 universe. Got a question? Feel free to ask though most of my knowledge sits with Craftworld Eldar, Dark Eldar, and Harlequin factions. I do know the "basics" of other others though.

When its showing the creature with the tentacles holding all the Astartes, what happens before the Space Marine is sent away is that something appears to strike and kill the daemon.
It is unknown just what exactly killed the daemon.
The Emperor himself, another daemon, one of the Chaos Gods themselves, another Psyker, the blast from the marine before he was sucked in, one of the primarch's/other Space Marine's stuck in the warp, etc.
In the 40k universe, that blast could have literally come from anything and/or anyone.

About the good/bad guys, the Astartes, or Space marines in the video work for the Inquisition. To give you an idea about the Inquisition, beyond the Exterminatus memes, I find this quote from DoW2 does a good job describing them. "It is human nature to seek culpability in a time of tragedy. It is a sign of strength, to cry out against fate, rather than bow one's head and succumb. Inevitably, many shall fault the hands upon the sword which felled Typhon (the planet that got Exterminatus'ed), the Ordo Malleus (branch of the Inquisition). But the Inquisition merely performs the duty of its office. To further fear them is redundant; to hate them, heretical. Those more sensible will place responsibility with those who forced the hands of the Inquisition. With some fortune, they will foster this hatred into purpose and further rule their own fate by coming to the Emperor's service." Essentially, they are the necessary evil that ensures the survival of humanity.

Some background for anyone unfamiliar with Warhammer 40k:
The series takes place in the 41st millennium, and humanity has changed. Everyone is ruled by the Imperium of Man, a massive empire across the galaxy. The Astartes (usually called Space Marines) are massive super soldiers that fight for the Imperium. The guy in the red hood was a psyker, someone born with psychic powers. He's working for the Inquisition, an organization in the Imperium that seeks out demonic influences and kills them. The psyker was monitoring the two spheres, but learned that the spheres were ordered to kill the Space Marines, and broke concentration to warn them. If you listen closely, you can hear him say "Recall them immediately!" Sadly, this led to him being possessed by one of the spheres, and the two white space marines killed him before he could do any damage. Hope that helps clear it up

the giant robot missing its leg was one of the "Men of Iron". its an artifact from an age where A.I. ran amok and nearly wiped out all of humanity. basically, the demons you saw are trying to revive those "Men of Iron" and put them under the control of demons.
