You're not the first fan I've seen say they cried knowing Amorim will leave the club. This gives me hope as a Man Utd fan that he is finally the right man to take charge of my wounded club.
@@thebizness5596 Sporting was a chronically 3rd place. Under 4seasons and a half we are, without a doubt, the best club in Portugal atm. Not only the football that is played that is attractive (10 games, 35 goals/3 conceded) the structure of the club evolved with him, he is very hands on type of coach, likes to be involved in everything, including youth and B teams. He is truly special, but you will soon learn that no matter what i type here, the feeling of.having him leading your team is on another level. I just ask pacience towards him, he can learn from his mistakes
So ive noticed how I keep missing these videos and I've realised now it's to do with the branding. I subscribe to both athletic FC and athletic podcast. Both brands are very similar including thumbnails. When quickly browsing I just assume these "TIFO" videos are athletic pod videos so just ignore them. Would be helpful (at least for me) if there was clear difference. Happy to be called stupid. But I'm still struggling with the TIFO to Athletic transition. It wouldn't shock me others have suffered this before at the very least. Still love the videos when I do stop to watch 🙂
It doesn't make a lot of sense saying that of Amorim is let go, United are stuck with this Unicorn wing backs because if you look at the players he used as wing backs are Porro and Nuno Mendes, who today play for Spurs and PSG in a back Four ( Mendes being One of the best in the world) , and Nuno Santos, Catamo and Quenda who were all wingers. He coached all of those players into that position. None played there before. Amorim first year was more defensive ( Mendes and Porro , the real Defenders) and now more ofensiva ( Catamo and Quenda, natural wingers). Amorim is well loved here ( I'm a Porto supporter) and everyone (except Sporting fans) is very happy he is leaving. Hopefully he takes Gyokeres with him, we don't want him here no more hahaha
If I can add a few remarks on Amorim: [1] His press talks before and after the game are true gems. He always talks of football, tactics, players and as the relation with the media evolves, he will slowly direct the conversations from the hot non-pitch topics, to fotball masterclasses about the game we just witnessed. Journalists often look like schoolboys eager to learn. [2] He doesn't choose just 11 players per game. He uses the whole bench. He likes a small squad in numbers so that everyone on the squad is part of the rotation... and everyone really is. [3] He will not care about a player status. If he can't find what he needs in the squad, he will look in the youth squads for what he needs and he will groom the potential he sees in a player and will have no problem playing him in the main squad. He'll be greatly missed...
@@CheriptheRipper ManU is a different club and environment but in Sporting he would... if they run and put effort in the training sessions, be part of the team and find a place for their talent in the rotation. If no commitment is shown in training, then he'll scout the youth teams for talent and will find someone who wants to play and puts the effort everyday to do it. He won't do this in a confrontational way, but that's what he will do. At least that's what he did here.

I'm obviously biased but I lean towards being hopeful. I think he's exciting, his style is very different, and I think he has a very high ceiling. Hopefully the Utd curse doesn't get him.
Honestly, there isn't no such thing as United curse - coming from someone who has been a fan of United since like 96, all the managerial appointments after SAF tenure hasn't been good enough. None of them made a step up after leaving United. Thing is, our whole football structure is now new and should have the acknowledgment to help the whole footballing department to concure new heights. That being said, Amorim has a lot to prove himself now also to adapt to new league and higher standards.
Moyes, LVG, Jose, Ole, ETH, were all the right fit, and looked what happened I hope he knows what he's letting himself in for, intense scrutiny, the gutter press, and so called TH-cam fan channels, unrealistic expectations from fans, of instant success. Good luck, he'll need it.
For at least 3 of these names, then being "the right fit" is questionable. Man United haven't had proper football leadership for years, so because of that, there was never a clear cut decision on what style of play the club wanted to commit to. That's why all of those managers listed widely vary in terms of their footballing philosophies. It's therefore difficult to say that all (or any) of them were "the right fit"
None of these managers were the right fit simply due to the fact they all had a Glazer ownership and board above them. We could’ve brought Pep in right after Fergie retired and it would’ve went badly. The fact of the matter is, no manager was set up for success under the previous regime. Media of course have their responsibility for the intense scrutiny these managers faced also but that’s what happens when you’re the biggest club in the country. Blaming fans is pretty laughable, no big club supports managers like United do - of course there’s the ridiculous online trolls that all fanbases have but for the most part, all of those managers were supported well past the point they should’ve been. The ‘fans demand immediate success’ talking point is so tired and wrong, no manager post Moyes (since he came in right after we won the league) was expected to win the league in their first season, for example.
Moyes and LVG was never the right fit. Ole didnt have the tactical nous, ETH was exciting but he lacked in charisma and ditched his principles pretty early
Amorim adapted Wingers to Wingback very well in the last years in Sporting. Nuno Santos was playing Right Winger at Rio Ave and played mostly as LWB in Sporting. Geny Catamo was LW all his career and plays as both RWB and LWB in Sporting. Quenda is another example of player who made is fornation as Winger and it's now playing as Wingback. I think that will be the most interesting to see in Man Utd.
I am FC Porto supporter and all I can say is Amorim will change deeply MU if they let him, great communicator and the relationship with the players is like I never saw, he's the boss and like their older brother if it make sense, I never saw him trash any player even if played badly, he always blame himself, he will win the locker room and they will give everything for him, that is his biggest skill, keep the good work guys

The analysis would benefit from looking at the Glasner project at Crystal Palace. He has set up with the very same style of 343, with high wingbacks and two 10s. When it clicked into place last season it was superb, but there was a lot of player turnover in the summer and this season it hasn’t settled yet. The two 10s need very quick minds, the CF must be physically strong and the wingbacks need to run and run.

Bruno is basically a box to box number 10. Take Scholes, Gerrard and Lampard, add a dash of Bryan Robson and a little bit of Cantona and you get Bruno Fernandes. Lots of energy, all action, creative, covers every blade of grass, scores and makes goals for fun. That makes him perfect for a counterattacking side which is why he was so good under Solskjaer, who I think is the manager who got the very best out of him. Like Gerrard, he's a Roy Of The Rovers type of player (though Bruno is far more productive, having been the best chance creator in the world for the past 4 or 5 years) but with that comes a lack of positional discipline. It's not that he can't be disciplined. He's done it for Portugal and on a few occasions, for United but you get the sense that if you put him on a leash, you take a lot away from his game. Bruno could absolutely play in a double pivot. He gives the ball away playing in the 10 but that's what 10's do. They take risks. Look at De Bruyne or Messi's stats and you'll see the same thing. On the few occasions he has been asked to play deeper, his pass percentage has gone way up and he's able to dictate the tempo. The reason managers don't play him there more often though is because his chance creation and goal scoring go way down and at United, there's nobody to replace his numbers if you give him a more disciplined role. Amorim's 3-4-3 system with 2 10's might actually benefit Bruno greatly, giving him the creative freedom he obviously needs but within a structure where he doesn't feel like he needs to cover every single blade of grass. I think a lot of the problem with Bruno, and it happens with a lot of players who are obviously the best player in the team, is that he feels the need to cover for everyone. It's almost like he can't trust the players around him to do their jobs so he needs to do it for them (and if we're being honest, it's not a crazy point of view given how poorly players around him have performed in recent years). The 3-4-3 may help alleviate that issue.

Carreras is playing well in Benfica and because of such Amorim got to know him better than if he was on loan at Sampdoria. Makes sense, as the profile is closer than Dalot or Shaw.

If wing backs are to be the intention, I wonder if Harry Amass will get a call up sooner than he might otherwise have got ? Mazraoui seems a decent shout for the right side. I could see Dalot playing RCB and filling the R wingback role at times.
On the topic of wingbacks it is worth noting that Rúben Amorim has converted several wingers into wingbacks while at Sporting. Nuno Santos, Geny Catamo and Geovany Quenda were all wingers. Geny is especially interesting because he was a left footed player played mostly as a RWB. Quenda is like that too now, though Sporting have defended in a 4-4-2 shape more often than not this season instead of the defensive line with 5 men. I feel like the 4-4-2 defensive shape could suit the United squad better, particularly when you consider the potential problem with the left side.

ETH was the author of his own downfall. He was given £200m a year and wasted £616m on the worst players I have ever seen. The ETH fans try to defend his transfers but they can't because they know they are trash. I am a United fan but I knew his talent identification was trash from the beginning. Amorim the coach seems top notch however he won't have a veto over transfers so his success will be partly dependent on Dan Ashworth bringing him the players he needs. I hope Ineos back Amorim and give him the players he needs.
@@almac9203 Yoro is the worst player youve ever seen? Onana had a bad start but has grown into one of the best current players.. Hoijlund is great for his age, he just shouldnt have been made the starting striker for a club like united so soon.. Ugarte has hardly played and will hopefully suite Amorim's system since hes played under him before.. Casemiro was great when we bought him and i think he was more of a panic buy who didnt suite ETH's system but he was losing games and had no CDM and the club failed to get his main target

Ruben might turn Antony into a Class LWB. Think about it, if he keeps his ego aside, he has everything to play that role, He can defend, he can retain the ball at a every good level, He can run with the ball, and can cross his with the only foot he has, Maybe what I just said is stupid, but I can see him play there
I think it’s a fair assessment. Fans want rid of Antony for his minimal G/A output - but they absolutely can’t question his work rate and defensive capabilities. He’s probably better at tracking back then our other wingers combined.

His problem is that he’s being judged on his attacking output, yet his best work comes as a ball carrier. Perfect for a LWB imo. Just needs to work on his crossing.
Either that or the right inner forward, see how he uses trincao or Marcus Edwards. Which is sad because if he actually plays good, he won't be memed to oblivion no more.
Dutch managers are different. Its a cultural thing. Ten hag is not a bad coach and he will go on and win titles somewhere else but I think Amorim is a better fit for Manchester United
Could have explored why he is obsessed with a back 3. He lost his first two games as a manager, when he played with a back 4. This has been a differentiating factor for him
The importance of the central defender in his teams is a crucial one. They often start the offense play, they have the liberty to move out of position and many times they are even the play makers. On most teams this player is barely substituted, with Amorim, it's odd not to see a central defender being substituted every week. Once you see his teams playing you'll understand why. The 3 is just the starting point, they are so much more.

Seeing the MU players in a 3-4-3 as presented here, it seems to make more sense then I initially expetected. Ruben Amorim is a great coach. Let him do his thing without any expectations for this season and I'm sure MU will have a wonderful time with him. I'm sure he will also have a great relation with the team and with the press. His soft skills are top notch. Always a very focused, very relaxed and friendly approach.
Cynically, I agree. It's easy to pause footage and draw shapes and pass it off as analysis, Shearer has been doing it for years on MotD. But perhaps I'm being cynical like I say and there's something more to it.
Davies/Frimpong are the perfect option for an Amorim team. Being Man U you can bring in that talent. Madrid are focusing on a RB like Trent and a CB to pair alongside Rudiger. So Davies may be the “third” signing they try to make and you can potentially snag him as making him a priority.
Amorim comes in, after 4 games realises the squad can not play his system at all, game 5 we’re playing Ole ball again. Exactly the same thing happened to ETH.

In Sporting we have Quenda, left footed, playing on the right side of defense, cutting inwards in conjunction with Trincão (10 on the right) and the midfielder on the right, to create an overload on that side of the pitch that allows Quenda to cut inwards for a shot or a cross to the second post (with the left foot the cross can be easily directed to the goal and a minimum deflect can turn into a goal), that also allows to drag the left back or the center defender to be dragged inwards and provide space for Trincão to drible between lines, wich is a strong aspect of both players. Saying this, I can see Garnacho play on the right side when Man Utd play against "weaker" teams.
Hes used to be beating many2 very easy teams in the league. EPL anyone can beat anyone anyday. Wolves 19th and Southamptopn 20th. These two can easily get top 4 in portuguese league. Stay composed and watch how it goes first will ya.
It's worth mentioning in terms of converting attackers into wing backs that Saka began in the arsenal system as a defender, he had the chance at that slow process of putting him in there as opposed to abruptly expecting any current man united winter to become that role so quickly.
Basically exactly what McKenna at Ipswich primarily tries but is adapter to team he is facing sometimes. So will be interesting to see same style vs each other!
i loved the end bit about the concrens over amorim's back 3 shape and whether there is any flexibility over it . but what i would say is even though sporting dont do it often there are certain games where their players rotate with the wing backs coming in and the wide forwards holding the width , thats in some cases but with better players around him now he might use that more often .
JJ was right about it being about hiring someone young who has already overachieved - and Amorim fits that bill... Winning 2 titles in 4 seasons (with a likely 5th this season) with Sporting is akin to what Fergie achieved ' Aberdeen or what Klopp did with Dortmund. This season could be bumpy but prople do seem to forget that Jose & Ole played a back 3 at times and as i understand it, the WB role under Amorim is similar to a wide midfielder in a traditional 4-4-2 - something our FB's are suited to and could maybe work for Antony &/or Amad. I think the twin 10 set up may suit Rashford as well - he is hitting some excellent passes and crosses this season and not being required to hug the wing might suit him and give him the ball in that left side of the box channel that he can be devastating in. But he needs his squad to stay fit - something that ETH never got a handle on given how this season has panned out so far...
What I must say is that Maguire doesn’t have the feet to play with Amorim. Only if he places him in the center as basically a libero just playing to the sides. But even there… Relative to WBs, he adapted wingers with success, the latest being Quenda, which is basically a massively talented winger, like Nani or a Quaresma, and he’s playing there. He just started a this season, he is 17, and is working wonders.
Mazraoui is perfect for the wingback role, as is Shaw (if fit). Malacia also fits the profile, but will he make a comeback? There's also talk of buying back Alvaro Fernández from Benfica in January. The odd man out in this system is Garnacho, and to a certain degree Bruno. All other players can fit neatly into the needed positions. Especially Rashford (who benefits from playing closer to the middle) and Amad (who can play a 10-ish role on the right). Martínez - De Ligt - Yoro is a perfect backline, as is Mainoo - Ugarte in midfield.
I think back three systems might be the next natural evolution of football. Most teams play a 325 type shape by dropping a fullback or a midfielder into the back three when in possession. But there is a lot of upside from having an actual CB playing at CB throughout the game. If you were to name the five best young managers in the game right now that list would probably include Amorim, Alonso, Inzaghi, and Hoeness. All of which are having success using a 343 shape. Which suggests that it might well be the next meta in football. If United are ahead of rhw curve with this then it has massive upside. Especially when you consider that Pep is probably in his final year or two at City. If not then there are several examples of coaches who have had success with a back three and developed themselves to use a back four system, such as Tuchel and Naglesmann. A great tactical mind will be able to grow and adapt. I think Amorim fits that mould.
Given how Ten Hag’s Ajax tactics bore no resemblance to his Utd team it will be interesting to see if this conversation turns out to be in anyway relevant to Amorim’s Utd. My question would be if Ten Hag hadn’t taken over Utd who would you pick Erik or Amorim? Hopefully the latter!
very valid points, especially who plays where and a back three coach being able to evolve as well as the up and down side of back 3 systems and teams. i really hope he ca evolve to a ack 4 and do it very well
@nananou1687 I am not saying there is a fuss. But a amorim's back 3 uses wingbacks as primary source of width and like the analysis shows, their attacking abilities ought to be top notch. Back 4 uses wingers usually good at going past opponents and are dynamic to cut in or go outward which wing backs may not afford u often. But also their creativity is also limited but stoppable unlike a winger like rashford or saka who will give u all attack options.
I think a different scenario for Bruno could be more of a 3-4-1-2 playing Bruno as the 1 between Ugarte and Mainoo, and the forwards. Lets you either play both Højlund and Zirkzee or a combo of one of them and Amad/Rashford/Garnacho etc. Could allow him to play the role he’s best at as well as getting more forwards onto the pitch??

Fun video as always. I think a bit too much emphasis on the wing back thing being a risk, a fullback who can attack is not uncommon these days. Shaw and Dalot are decent going forward, both would probably be better given license to bomb on and not worrying about inverting. If we do dip into the market just don't sign one who gets a nosebleed running towards his own goal.
Well on the positive side he had a presser saying other clubs came in for him offered triple the clause he said no he wanted United. It was now or never for him.
Normally Amorim has 2 profiles by position. Although its a 3 man defensive line, where he gets his height for dead balls, he can use 3 CBs or 1 or 2 CBs and one right or left defender, that will push up and support the wing back in games that the opposition is playing the bus. This idea is also common to all the other positions. Sometimes he plays 2 strikers and a 10, sometimes the attacking midfielders are dribblers other times they are possession players. The positions dont change, the roles are stable, so its not on the players to adapt to an opponent but on Amorim to choose the right players for the opponent. This creates a lot of trust from the players. In this system, his double midfield pivot are the ones to be more valuable, so Mainoo is going to blossom. There are a couple of heavy earners that dont have the quality or health to be an option and this is where United will need to invest. Invest in loosing these guys, like Rashford, Shaw, Maguire and Fernandes, maybe even Eriksen and Casemiro. Amorim values very old players if they have the right mentality at training to ensure the team has the proper spirit. Sancho would fit very well if United can recover him. Amorim is patient and sensitive to players moments and feelings, he would not scale the war like ETH. Much before everyone knows there's a problem the player is already out and looking for a new club. I feel this is the expected pain point for United. Spending money to loose players instead of spending to get them. Obviously the league is much harder but the 343 allows flexibility and he keeps winning matches against very defensive teams while playing like this.
Amorim's career path, so far, is very similar to that of SAF, Brian Clough, Jose Mourinho. He's come from nowhere to do brilliantly with two or three clubs at the bottom end of the leagues. Let's hope he can push on. It took SAF 5 years to develop United, I doubt Amorim will be allowed that time though. edit:- typo.
Honestly the formation might work for United. The extra center back may help against the late goals from crosses. Plus Maguire and Mount both had their best performances in a 3-4-3, and Fernandes would be slotted into that right hand channel where he usually drifts into anyways, so it looks comfortable for him. Change might be good for United in this sense.
I think Ugarte and Casemiro is an interesting topic. IMO when Casemiro has played as a CB he has not been as awful as sometimes the media says he was... as a Madrid supporter all of us know Casemiro with the ball isn't as bad as he is pictured to by the English media as soon as he fucks up BUT is better if he has to have the ball as little as possible. So I feel at 31 or 32 that he is, and as someone who was a forward in youth football, the narrative of him being the central and more conservative centre back in a back 3 ticks that Beckenbauer-Matthaus career path in which they get progressively more defensive but it ends up suiting them. I know he hasn't been amazing when played CB but IMO if he was to be a full time CB and not a fill in CB, and specially in a back 3, it could end up good for him. Onana De Ligt-Casemiro-Licha Mazraoui-Ugarte-Mainoo-Dalot Bruno-Rashford Rasmus Is what I feel makes sense, but what you think makes sense in football often ends up not working. But I really feel Licha is more flexible than what we have seen him at United, early on at Ajax he played as a DM, and Casemiro full time CB in a 3, can be a surprise. The Gyokeres topic I have a verdict on that. He is good, but im not sure other than the manager link he convinces me enough to: A be crucial to buy, I feel Rasmus and Zirkzee can be polished B Even if Vlahovic was more pricey I don't see why or how someone would prefer Gyokeres to Vlahovic I don't know if Vlahovic is linked to Man U but Im a huge fan of him and I feel, along with Chiesa, they have suffered from Juventus suffering (but over performing ironically) the last couple of seasons with Allegri. Im not aware how is he doing with Motta tbh but if Man U has targeted two summers in a row two of the most good yet meh Serie A forwards, why not the mf that when good is amazing, and when not he is, at least in my eyes, better than Hojlund and Zirkzee? That's my view on it, Vlahovic is younger than Gyokeres as well but both are young so yeah.
He really does sound like the perfect coach for United. Yet we all know that United are a completely different club than any other!!! The pressure is immense, and we have seen it ruin every manager/coach who has come in, since Ferguson left us. Not only the football that is played that is attractive (10 games, 35 goals/3 conceded) the structure of the club evolved with him, he is very hands on type of coach, likes to be involved in everything, including youth and B teams. He is truly special, but you will soon learn that no matter what i type here, the feeling of.having him leading your team is on another level. I just ask pacience towards him, he can learn from his mistakes

So ive noticed how I keep missing these videos and I've realised now it's to do with the branding. I subscribe to both athletic FC and athletic podcast. Both brands are very similar including thumbnails. When quickly browsing I just assume these "TIFO" videos are athletic pod videos so just ignore them. Would be helpful (at least for me) if there was clear difference. Happy to be called stupid. But I'm still struggling with the TIFO to Athletic transition. It wouldn't shock me others have suffered this before at the very least. Still love the videos when I do stop to watch 🙂

It doesn't make a lot of sense saying that of Amorim is let go, United are stuck with this Unicorn wing backs because if you look at the players he used as wing backs are Porro and Nuno Mendes, who today play for Spurs and PSG in a back Four ( Mendes being One of the best in the world) , and Nuno Santos, Catamo and Quenda who were all wingers. He coached all of those players into that position. None played there before. Amorim first year was more defensive ( Mendes and Porro , the real Defenders) and now more ofensiva ( Catamo and Quenda, natural wingers).
Amorim is well loved here ( I'm a Porto supporter) and everyone (except Sporting fans) is very happy he is leaving. Hopefully he takes Gyokeres with him, we don't want him here no more hahaha

If I can add a few remarks on Amorim:
[1] His press talks before and after the game are true gems. He always talks of football, tactics, players and as the relation with the media evolves, he will slowly direct the conversations from the hot non-pitch topics, to fotball masterclasses about the game we just witnessed. Journalists often look like schoolboys eager to learn.
[2] He doesn't choose just 11 players per game. He uses the whole bench. He likes a small squad in numbers so that everyone on the squad is part of the rotation... and everyone really is.
[3] He will not care about a player status. If he can't find what he needs in the squad, he will look in the youth squads for what he needs and he will groom the potential he sees in a player and will have no problem playing him in the main squad.
He'll be greatly missed...

@@CheriptheRipper ManU is a different club and environment but in Sporting he would... if they run and put effort in the training sessions, be part of the team and find a place for their talent in the rotation. If no commitment is shown in training, then he'll scout the youth teams for talent and will find someone who wants to play and puts the effort everyday to do it. He won't do this in a confrontational way, but that's what he will do. At least that's what he did here.

Honestly, there isn't no such thing as United curse - coming from someone who has been a fan of United since like 96, all the managerial appointments after SAF tenure hasn't been good enough. For at least 3 of these names, then being "the right fit" is questionable. Man United haven't had proper football leadership for years, so because of that, there was never a clear cut decision on what style of play the club wanted to commit to. That's why all of those managers listed widely vary in terms of their footballing philosophies. It's therefore difficult to say that all (or any) of them were "the right fit"
None of these managers were the right fit simply due to the fact they all had a Glazer ownership and board above them. We could’ve brought Pep in right after Fergie retired and it would’ve went badly. The fact of the matter is, no manager was set up for success under the previous regime. Media of course have their responsibility for the intense scrutiny these managers faced also but that’s what happens when you’re the biggest club in the country. Blaming fans is pretty laughable, no big club supports managers like United do - of course there’s the ridiculous online trolls that all fanbases have but for the most part, all of those managers were supported well past the point they should’ve been. The ‘fans demand immediate success’ talking point is so tired and wrong, no manager post Moyes (since he came in right after we won the league) was expected to win the league in their first season, for example.
Moyes and LVG was never the right fit. Ole didnt have the tactical nous, ETH was exciting but he lacked in charisma and ditched his principles pretty early

Amorim adapted Wingers to Wingback very well in the last years in Sporting. Nuno Santos was playing Right Winger at Rio Ave and played mostly as LWB in Sporting. Geny Catamo was LW all his career and plays as both RWB and LWB in Sporting. Quenda is another example of player who made is fornation as Winger and it's now playing as Wingback. I think that will be the most interesting to see in Man Utd.

The analysis would benefit from looking at the Glasner project at Crystal Palace. He has set up with the very same style of 343, with high wingbacks and two 10s. When it clicked into place last season it was superb, but there was a lot of player turnover in the summer and this season it hasn’t settled yet. The two 10s need very quick minds, the CF must be physically strong and the wingbacks need to run and run.

Bruno is basically a box to box number 10. Take Scholes, Gerrard and Lampard, add a dash of Bryan Robson and a little bit of Cantona and you get Bruno Fernandes. Lots of energy, all action, creative, covers every blade of grass, scores and makes goals for fun. That makes him perfect for a counterattacking side which is why he was so good under Solskjaer, who I think is the manager who got the very best out of him.
Like Gerrard, he's a Roy Of The Rovers type of player (though Bruno is far more productive, having been the best chance creator in the world for the past 4 or 5 years) but with that comes a lack of positional discipline. It's not that he can't be disciplined. He's done it for Portugal and on a few occasions, for United but you get the sense that if you put him on a leash, you take a lot away from his game. Bruno could absolutely play in a double pivot. He gives the ball away playing in the 10 but that's what 10's do. They take risks. Look at De Bruyne or Messi's stats and you'll see the same thing. On the few occasions he has been asked to play deeper, his pass percentage has gone way up and he's able to dictate the tempo. The reason managers don't play him there more often though is because his chance creation and goal scoring go way down and at United, there's nobody to replace his numbers if you give him a more disciplined role.
Amorim's 3-4-3 system with 2 10's might actually benefit Bruno greatly, giving him the creative freedom he obviously needs but within a structure where he doesn't feel like he needs to cover every single blade of grass. I think a lot of the problem with Bruno, and it happens with a lot of players who are obviously the best player in the team, is that he feels the need to cover for everyone. It's almost like he can't trust the players around him to do their jobs so he needs to do it for them (and if we're being honest, it's not a crazy point of view given how poorly players around him have performed in recent years). The 3-4-3 may help alleviate that issue.

On the topic of wingbacks it is worth noting that Rúben Amorim has converted several wingers into wingbacks while at Sporting. Nuno Santos, Geny Catamo and Geovany Quenda were all wingers. Geny is especially interesting because he was a left footed player played mostly as a RWB. Quenda is like that too now, though Sporting have defended in a 4-4-2 shape more often than not this season instead of the defensive line with 5 men. I feel like the 4-4-2 defensive shape could suit the United squad better, particularly when you consider the potential problem with the left side.

The importance of the central defender in his teams is a crucial one. They often start the offense play, they have the liberty to move out of position and many times they are even the play makers. On most teams this player is barely substituted, with Amorim, it's odd not to see a central defender being substituted every week. Once you see his teams playing you'll understand why. The 3 is just the starting point, they are so much more.
I think Antony might have a second chance at United, playing as a wingback. At least until the transfer window.

Seeing the MU players in a 3-4-3 as presented here, it seems to make more sense then I initially expetected. Ruben Amorim is a great coach. Let him do his thing without any expectations for this season and I'm sure MU will have a wonderful time with him.

Davies/Frimpong are the perfect option for an Amorim team. Being Man U you can bring in that talent. Madrid are focusing on a RB like Trent and a CB to pair alongside Rudiger. So Davies may be the “third” signing they try to make and you can potentially snag him as making him a priority.

I hope Joe is doing okay. The way he's moving in his chair to switch between looking at the other Js really suggests he's got a back/neck issue.
In Sporting we have Quenda, left footed, playing on the right side of defense, cutting inwards in conjunction with Trincão (10 on the right) and the midfielder on the right, to create an overload on that side of the pitch that allows Quenda to cut inwards for a shot or a cross to the second post (with the left foot the cross can be easily directed to the goal and a minimum deflect can turn into a goal), that also allows to drag the left back or the center defender to be dragged inwards and provide space for Trincão to drible between lines, wich is a strong aspect of both players.
Saying this, I can see Garnacho play on the right side when Man Utd play against "weaker" teams.

It's worth mentioning in terms of converting attackers into wing backs that Saka began in the arsenal system as a defender, he had the chance at that slow process of putting him in there as opposed to abruptly expecting any current man united winter to become that role so quickly.
Basically exactly what McKenna at Ipswich primarily tries but is adapter to team he is facing sometimes. So will be interesting to see same style vs each other!
i loved the end bit about the concrens over amorim's back 3 shape and whether there is any flexibility over it . but what i would say is even though sporting dont do it often there are certain games where their players rotate with the wing backs coming in and the wide forwards holding the width , thats in some cases but with better players around him now he might use that more often .

JJ was right about it being about hiring someone young who has already overachieved - and Amorim fits that bill... Winning 2 titles in 4 seasons (with a likely 5th this season) with Sporting is akin to what Fergie achieved ' Aberdeen or what Klopp did with Dortmund. This season could be bumpy but prople do seem to forget that Jose & Ole played a back 3 at times and as i understand it, the WB role under Amorim is similar to a wide midfielder in a traditional 4-4-2 - something our FB's are suited to and could maybe work for Antony &/or Amad. I think the twin 10 set up may suit Rashford as well - he is hitting some excellent passes and crosses this season and not being required to hug the wing might suit him and give him the ball in that left side of the box channel that he can be devastating in.
But he needs his squad to stay fit - something that ETH never got a handle on given how this season has panned out so far...

What I must say is that Maguire doesn’t have the feet to play with Amorim. Only if he places him in the center as basically a libero just playing to the sides. But even there…
Relative to WBs, he adapted wingers with success, the latest being Quenda, which is basically a massively talented winger, like Nani or a Quaresma, and he’s playing there. He just started a this season, he is 17, and is working wonders.

Mazraoui is perfect for the wingback role, as is Shaw (if fit). Malacia also fits the profile, but will he make a comeback? There's also talk of buying back Alvaro Fernández from Benfica in January.
The odd man out in this system is Garnacho, and to a certain degree Bruno. All other players can fit neatly into the needed positions. Especially Rashford (who benefits from playing closer to the middle) and Amad (who can play a 10-ish role on the right). Martínez - De Ligt - Yoro is a perfect backline, as is Mainoo - Ugarte in midfield.

I think back three systems might be the next natural evolution of football. Most teams play a 325 type shape by dropping a fullback or a midfielder into the back three when in possession. But there is a lot of upside from having an actual CB playing at CB throughout the game.
If you were to name the five best young managers in the game right now that list would probably include Amorim, Alonso, Inzaghi, and Hoeness. All of which are having success using a 343 shape. Which suggests that it might well be the next meta in football. If United are ahead of rhw curve with this then it has massive upside. Especially when you consider that Pep is probably in his final year or two at City.
If not then there are several examples of coaches who have had success with a back three and developed themselves to use a back four system, such as Tuchel and Naglesmann. A great tactical mind will be able to grow and adapt. I think Amorim fits that mould.
Given how Ten Hag’s Ajax tactics bore no resemblance to his Utd team it will be interesting to see if this conversation turns out to be in anyway relevant to Amorim’s Utd. My question would be if Ten Hag hadn’t taken over Utd who would you pick Erik or Amorim? Hopefully the latter!

Back 4 teams inevitably use back 3 during build up anyway. I don't see the fuss.
@nananou1687 I am not saying there is a fuss. But a amorim's back 3 uses wingbacks as primary source of width and like the analysis shows, their attacking abilities ought to be top notch.
Back 4 uses wingers usually good at going past opponents and are dynamic to cut in or go outward which wing backs may not afford u often. But also their creativity is also limited but stoppable unlike a winger like rashford or saka who will give u all attack options.

I think a different scenario for Bruno could be more of a 3-4-1-2 playing Bruno as the 1 between Ugarte and Mainoo, and the forwards. Lets you either play both Højlund and Zirkzee or a combo of one of them and Amad/Rashford/Garnacho etc.
Could allow him to play the role he’s best at as well as getting more forwards onto the pitch??

Fun video as always. I think a bit too much emphasis on the wing back thing being a risk, a fullback who can attack is not uncommon these days. Shaw and Dalot are decent going forward, both would probably be better given license to bomb on and not worrying about inverting. If we do dip into the market just don't sign one who gets a nosebleed running towards his own goal.
Well on the positive side he had a presser saying other clubs came in for him offered triple the clause he said no he wanted United. It was now or never for him.
Normally Amorim has 2 profiles by position. Although its a 3 man defensive line, where he gets his height for dead balls, he can use 3 CBs or 1 or 2 CBs and one right or left defender, that will push up and support the wing back in games that the opposition is playing the bus. This idea is also common to all the other positions. Sometimes he plays 2 strikers and a 10, sometimes the attacking midfielders are dribblers other times they are possession players. The positions dont change, the roles are stable, so its not on the players to adapt to an opponent but on Amorim to choose the right players for the opponent. This creates a lot of trust from the players. In this system, his double midfield pivot are the ones to be more valuable, so Mainoo is going to blossom.
There are a couple of heavy earners that dont have the quality or health to be an option and this is where United will need to invest. Invest in loosing these guys, like Rashford, Shaw, Maguire and Fernandes, maybe even Eriksen and Casemiro. Amorim values very old players if they have the right mentality at training to ensure the team has the proper spirit.
Sancho would fit very well if United can recover him. Amorim is patient and sensitive to players moments and feelings, he would not scale the war like ETH. Much before everyone knows there's a problem the player is already out and looking for a new club. I feel this is the expected pain point for United. Spending money to loose players instead of spending to get them.
Obviously the league is much harder but the 343 allows flexibility and he keeps winning matches against very defensive teams while playing like this.
Valencia, Young prove it CAN be done but you lose attacking output from your best wingers when you convert them to wing backs.

Amorim's career path, so far, is very similar to that of SAF, Brian Clough, Jose Mourinho. He's come from nowhere to do brilliantly with two or three clubs at the bottom end of the leagues. Let's hope he can push on. It took SAF 5 years to develop United, I doubt Amorim will be allowed that time though. edit:- typo.
Honestly the formation might work for United. The extra center back may help against the late goals from crosses. Plus Maguire and Mount both had their best performances in a 3-4-3, and Fernandes would be slotted into that right hand channel where he usually drifts into anyways, so it looks comfortable for him. Change might be good for United in this sense.

Amorims Wingbacks specifically are more wingers than fullbacks, they are extremely offensive and a lot of the time dont drop back into a back 5
I think Ugarte and Casemiro is an interesting topic. IMO when Casemiro has played as a CB he has not been as awful as sometimes the media says he was... as a Madrid supporter all of us know Casemiro with the ball isn't as bad as he is pictured to by the English media as soon as he fucks up BUT is better if he has to have the ball as little as possible.
So I feel at 31 or 32 that he is, and as someone who was a forward in youth football, the narrative of him being the central and more conservative centre back in a back 3 ticks that Beckenbauer-Matthaus career path in which they get progressively more defensive but it ends up suiting them.
I know he hasn't been amazing when played CB but IMO if he was to be a full time CB and not a fill in CB, and specially in a back 3, it could end up good for him.

Is what I feel makes sense, but what you think makes sense in football often ends up not working. But I really feel Licha is more flexible than what we have seen him at United, early on at Ajax he played as a DM, and Casemiro full time CB in a 3, can be a surprise.
The Gyokeres topic I have a verdict on that. He is good, but im not sure other than the manager link he convinces me enough to:

B Even if Vlahovic was more pricey I don't see why or how someone would prefer Gyokeres to Vlahovic
I don't know if Vlahovic is linked to Man U but Im a huge fan of him and I feel, along with Chiesa, they have suffered from Juventus suffering (but over performing ironically) the last couple of seasons with Allegri. Im not aware how is he doing with Motta tbh but if Man U has targeted two summers in a row two of the most good yet meh Serie A forwards, why not the mf that when good is amazing, and when not he is, at least in my eyes, better than Hojlund and Zirkzee?
