If the xenomorph wasn't driven insane and made even more dangerous by its experiences, the hellscape might actually prove capable of traumatizing it to a point of docility that would see it huddling in the corner of some isolated dark space and afraid of even an encounter with humans.

    Here's the thing I don't understand about Weyland-Yutani: in both the comics and in-universe, it's established that humanity is branching out light years from home and can even terraform planets within a generation or two... *_so why the hell would you bring such dangerous/unknown specimens directly onto Earth?!_* A space station, a hollowed-out asteroid, a hidden base on Mars or the Moon or where ever...That way, if anything goes wrong, *_no one finds out about it._* Doesn't that make more sense? Not only is it safer in case you lose containment, but it's safer from prying eyes as well. I never got the whole thing of absolutely NEEDING to take the xenomorphs back to Earth. You don't have to, and it's just too big of a risk to Weyland-Yutani... as the Earth War comic shows.

It would require building highly advanced labs to house the specimen, plus the cost of shipping the materials there, the cost of construction, and the paperwork about what they were studying. Or, they could bring it to Earth, where such facilities already existed, and where no one would think twice about the company suddenly reinforcing its labs.

      3? 1. And he would have died anyway. As soon as the baby popped the top, it would scurry off, likely away from the ship. I'm pretty sure it took longer than 24 hours to reach full size, so they would have been clear to board the ship by then, and left it in the dust. That being said, the book is vague about the timetable, but I think the gestation would have taken longer than 24 hours too...so it might not have made any difference in the end, and might have helped Ash keep his cover.

      @Qwfwq66 Actually, they have incredibly short lifespans, so odds are it wouldn't delay laying. What it delayed on was detaching, staying on to act as an air filter into Kane was back in his own atmosphere. IT makes no sense biologically not to lay the egg immediately, because something can potentially be done to remove the hugger otherwise. Look at Resurrection, Ripley 8 was strong enough to rip the legs off and throw it off her face. 8 may have been a hybrid, but who's to say other species like that don't exist? No, it laid the egg in the bay.

    Ripley's being a stickler for the rules indicates her naivety as to exactly how far the company would go to secure a sample for its bio weapons division. Part of the horror here is watching all that come crashing down as she begins to sob uncontrollably after confronting ash in that computer room and realizing that he's been protecting the creature under company orders. Seems this is the first time the company overtly sacrificed a human crew and gave an android full control of a mission. They called the computer Mother but its seems mommy's new roll was to cast away the people and nurture a monster. That's a horror that seemed to go missing in the other films. They were doomed from the very beginning because they were sent to get the creature.

      @Fox Mulder what? I havent seen it in a while, but she was a second late..

    • @TheKyrix82
      @TheKyrix82 5 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      Well first off, no, it wasn't naive. At the time, they had absolutely no way of knowing that the signal was a warning, not a distress signal. They thought they had been directed to help someone in need, and merely figured they got there too late for the people who sent the 'distress' signal. Secondly, and this goes hand in hand with the first point, they had no idea WHAT the facehugger was, much less why anyone would want it for bioweapons, or anything else. Among the possible scenarios, it was considered that it might have some sort of virus, or that it might shed some sort of dangerous spores aboard the ship. The crew were, in fact, puzzled that the facehugger would put Kane in a coma and then work so hard to keep him alive. And finally, Mother was not trying to thwart Ripley in any way. In the scene in question, she had set the self destruct and found Jones and was going to put herself and the cat aboard the shuttle to flee. She discovered the alien was aboard, and tried to stop the self destruct, but she got there too late. It was stated that the timer, which I believe was something like ten minutes, had a five minute window to deactivate, after which NOTHING could stop it from going up when time ran out. Mother's 'failure' to stop the self destruct wouldn't have done anything to protect the creature, it just would have ensured that Ripley and Jones DIDN'T board the shuttle, or launch it, thereby ensuring that all of them, alien included, died when the Nostromo blew up. If anything, Mother was ensuring the destruction of the creature.

      But they already knew the co-ordinates to begin with. It is made quite clear in the first film that they re-routed the Nostromo to make sure it picks up that beacon and have to explore. Ash knew the entire time what was going to be found and what was going to happen. That is my problem with Aliens, it blatantly ignores this. In Alien, Dallas says that the science officer they shipped out with was replaced with Ash just days before leaving Thedus. Plus special order 937 says "Nostromo re-routed to new co-ordinates". So the company already knew about the derelict as they decoded the beacon before the Nostromo set out back to Earth.

  • @eddieolshefski6467
    @eddieolshefski6467 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    Very interesting theory. Well done. I was thinking of another possibility if Ash didn't interfere like he did and if Dallas decided to go with the quarantine procedure.
    If the 24 hour quarantine went through without any interference and problems, the Facehugger would have implanted the Xeno in Kane and die. Then, if Ripley and the crew was quick, they would bring Kane inside the ship and freeze him before the ChestBurster was fully grown. Ash would be successful in carrying out his Special Order without any loss of life. Except Kane but that'll be when the Company does their 'studies' on him and the Xenomorph.
    Then again, Ash would still let Kane in to the ship to complete his Special Order breaking quarantine. Again, without having any of the crew killed. Just when the Facehugger finishes implanting the Xenomorph inside Kane, he would secretly scan Kane to see what the Facehugger did and find the developing ChestBurster inside him. He would recommend to freeze Kane immediately to 'prevent a spread of possible infection' throughout the ship.
    Then, the crew would go on their 10 month journey home. Ash would have himself wake up a little early and inform the Company that he has the organism and they are on route back and to be ready. The crew would possibly be debriefed and would go on about their lives while Ash and the Company would study Kane and the Xenomorph.

      To each their own. Not gonna disrespect you or anything for finding Resurrection great, but to me, it just didn't hit home after Aliens. Alien 3 with that CGI disaster was just terrible, the characters lack luster, and plenty other things I'd prefer not going into. Resurrection felt more like a Predator movie; they tried adding in humor and "steamy" scenes, which just wasn't my cup of tea. Had the Xenomorphs, but it didn't feel like an Alien movie at all. More like some B-Grade action film. Not the "all-time horror classic" I know and love.
      Not to mention, it continued with the trope; "An Alien Movie Isn't an Alien Movie Without Ripley." Honestly, Aliens would've been a great conclusion. Maybe Alien 3 could've been about Amanda or something. Hell, even after Alien 3, they should've just been done with Ripley's character. Without a doubt, Alien 3 and Resurrection are the two worst films in the franchise.

      42ndStreetMatthew I like Alien 3 as well (even though it’s a terribly dreary movie), I just hated how they manufactured an instigating event (how would the Queen manage to stow away an egg without either Bishop, Newt, or Ripley noticing?). That being said, I’m sure the “what if” scenario would have led to a happy ending for all, with absolutely no way to make a sequel, so I know why they put the egg on the Sulaco.

    If Ripley followed quarantine, the Alien would have been birthed, with nowhere to hide, the burster would have been vulnerable. After the initial shock, Dallas or Lambert would have opened the airlock, and it likely would have run to hide somewhere close, likely still on the ship. After quarantine, they would have been allowed back on the ship, and scanned for embryos, turning up negative. Once taken off, the beast would have went into hibernation somewhere on the ship. The crew returns to hyper sleep, and on to earth, after jettisoning Kane's body as it was in the movie. Somehow, MUTHR knows the creature is still attached to the ship, and sends an encrypted message back to WY. The ship is held at a WY checkpoint in the outer planets, the crew is debriefed and sent back to earth on a shuttle that can take all but 3 of the Nostromo crew, Ripley, Dallas, and Parker draw the short straws, and await another cargo transport expected within 3 days. WY reps find the hibernating beast, and capture it in a stasis pod for study. Shit goes wrong, and cue 'Alien' to happen anyway.

    They probably already had the coordinates. Ash was a last minute addition to the crew, replacing the regular science officer which is highly unusual. Ripley even comments on this. This indicates Weyland-Yutani was already aware of the situation before the crew even left on their journey. Ash was also likely in semi-regular contact with WY.

    I guess if Ripley had convinced Parker and Brett to return to Earth the first crews on Earth to board the Nostromo would have a bit of a shock when they opened the airlock. One body with a hole in its chest, Dallas and Lambert eviscerated all over the walls, and a giant xenomorph who has just seen its first food in 10 months.
    All that assuming they didn't kill the chestburster in the airlock. If they did they may well have caused acid damage which could have compromised the integrity of the lock. If there was no acid damage, they would have starved to death, perhaps even resorting to cannibalism with Kane's body. Dark, I know lol

  • @botondkalocsai5322
    @botondkalocsai5322 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    The arguments are convincing about the outcome. However, at that outcome, the three victim is more than necessary. Dallas and Lambert must not be infected, because their suits were still intact, so no quarantine law would prohibit them to get into the ship. And also a chest burster never tries to combat if not necessary, it endeavours to hide until it grows adult. So after they witnessed the violent birth of the xenomorph, they could immediately go to the dropship, and leave the whole monstrosity behind, because the chest burster wouldn't attack them. It would have been a kind of "happier" and in the Alien franchise.

    • @TheKyrix82
      @TheKyrix82 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The book addresses that. There was concern that the creature could be shedding a virus or some sort of spores that could infect the ship. The fact that Kane was in direct contact with it made it more apparent, but even if they had caught the facehugger safely and walked up to the ship without it attacking anyone, quarantine still would have been enforced on all four of them

    It's probably safe to say, that if the quarantine had been enforced and the Alien had exited Kane's body, it would not have escaped the airlock, or the Dallas would have opened the exterior door and it would have left the Nostromo. The nature of the airlock means that it could not have escaped on to the ship itself. If it had been injured enough to bleed and create an hole, it would probably have been a fatal wound to a creature of its size (upon hatching). It looks far too small to seriously harm Dallas and Lambert. Without something to feed upon (and we can only assume that there were organic substances it could consume on the Nostromo), it seems unlikely that the Alien could have grown to a large enough size to be a threat. For growth to occur, it must ingest something. The mass has to come from somewhere. If Ripley had been obeyed, the body count on the Nostromo could have been just ONE.

  • @SmartCookie2022

    The breaking of quarantine procedure is a brilliant scene and so well written that it throws up the "what if?" scenario.

  • @BowserKoopa1
    @BowserKoopa1 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    After the chestbuster comes out of Kane, there's no way it would attack Dallas and Lambert. Just like in the dinner scene, it was smart enough to make its escape because it knows its definitely way too small and vulnerable. It has to get away and allow itself to grow bigger and stronger. Dallas and Lambert might have killed it, but even if they missed, it would have escaped. Then it might have come back later after it grows bigger, although its not sure how much time that takes, probably several hours. Meanwhile with Kane dead, Ripley would still force the others to stay outside for the 24 hour quarantine. During that time, its anyone's guess whether or not the alien would come back to attack. If Dallas and Lambert are in the inner lock hatch, the alien would probably not be able to get to them, and they could wait out the 24 hours. But if they are on the outside, and if the alien comes back, they may very well wind up getting killed.
    I think that only Kane would die, and its not sure whether or not Ash reveals his true colors. But either way, the Nostromo goes back to Earth, and Weyland-Yutani has the ships data, coordinates, etc., everything he needs to send an investigation crew to LV426. Ash would know that this information is just as important as obtaining a specimen and bringing it back. I'm absolutely positive that if Ash couldn't bring one back, all this other info would be just as valuable to The Company. From there, humans getting involved with the aliens, it'd be game over for our species.

    • @Gustav_Kuriga
      @Gustav_Kuriga 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Except that completely ignores the fact that The Company ALREADY KNOWS where the planet is. Furthermore, this ignores the fact that Weyland manages to get specimens anyway at a later date. Whether or not the alien gets on the Nostromo changes nothing except crew survival.

    • @Cyanwasserstoff
      @Cyanwasserstoff 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Gustav_Kuriga Except that Wayland Yutani did not know the exact coordinates of the planetoid with the Xeno. They know that it has to be somewhere in that sector (likely because they received the signal and did encode it), but there was a small problem. The lost ship nostromo and crew had shattered the image of Wayland Yutani and also did cost billions of dollars. The signal also got deactivated, so there it was getting very hard to locate the excat location of the planetoid. That is why WY started to terraform in that sector. They could sell it as "building better worlds" to the public and where secretly searching for the location of the Xeno infected ship.
      Alien Isolation does pick up some parts of it "the black history part of WY about the loss of the nostromo and it's crew" and that it also caused a strong financial damage. The company also did not like to talk about this incident

    I do have something gnawing my mind for so many many years... were WYC aware of the Xenomorph lifeform BEFORE the events of Alien 1979 ? I mean, I may answer my own question here with the proofs of Ash presence and purpose to gather intel and the specimen at all cost but how did WYC got to know about that alien signal? Was this planned to be shown after the evens of Covenant? Why did they simply sent them space truckers to investigate? To evaluate the deadliness of the xenomorph specimen? Wouldn't they had been more efficient in dispatching a pure scientific vessel instead?

    I would’ve said “ Bring the damned auto doc to the airlock and treat them there!”
    One thing I have consistently noticed in a lot of sci-fi, in fact, I want to say that the only one I’ve seen it apparently done right was Final Fantasy: the spirits within, is why are there no emergency medical alcoves located right next to the freaking airlocks for specifically that sort of thing. Seems that sick bay is located right smack in the heart of every single ship/space space in almost every science fiction universe.
    Going on a bit of a rant here, particularly as this sort of situation is something of a cliché in sci-fi these days, but when you’re in the true unknown like space, you can’t just write some heartless rule and expect people to follow it (in fact cliché seems to be at least one person won’t) yet human nature, nor apparently time factor for medical emergencies, is never taken into account in starship design. Hell, in Star Trek it’s even joked about with the site to site transport from the surface of an unknown planet directly to sickbay, but even then that’s more of a time issue than a quarantine procedure (yeah, I know, transporter supposed to filter out biological pathogen’s, but there’s been episodes were doesn’t pull it off).
    I think if the Nostromo had a medical alcove located right next to the airlock, even accessible via side door in the airlock, everyone would’ve been happy (except ash) and they would’ve been able to flush the chest burster as soon as it popped out.
    I sincerely hope that the spaceship architects of the future take human psychology 101 as part of the required courses in starship design.

    What if... Sir Ridley Scott had directed Alien 2. That would also be an interesting "what if" to think about. If alien hadn't fallen into the hands of Cameron, it wouldn't have been called "xenomorph", its life cycles including a queen wouldn't have been contrived, and it wouldn't have been portrayed as mindless insects/bugs, and the alien franchise as we know it would be totally different.

    I would have x rayed Kane after he woke up instead of assuming that a creature that stuck to his face, kept him alive and then just left him and died for no obvious reason. Ripley was smart and thinking outside the box but this was a rookie and and highly unlikely chain of events upon Kane waking. I know it was necessary to move the plot on, but this is the only stupid part in Alien for me. Still one of the scariest and brilliant films ever, the whole film is a rollercoaster ride of anxiety and fear. Not many films can achieve this for the full movie, we only catch a break the moment Kane wakes and after the Alien is ejected from the airlock.

    Overlooks one fact: While they were in the airlock Dallas and Lambert had their environment suits; Kane didn't. When the facehugger dropped off Kane, he would have been asphyxiated since the airlock wasn't pressurized. Whether the chestburster would have survived would have depended upon whether it would have been able to attack Dallas or Lambert and usurp their environment suits, or whether the chestburster, free of Kane, would be able to force its way into the pressurized area of the ship.

    If memory serves; the novelization mentions Ash reminding Ripley, after she deciphers the signal as a warning, and when she's about to go out after Dallas, Kane and Lambert. That, should anything happen; with four crew members off the ship, they would be below minimum take off capability.
    So, with that in mind. If quarantine had been followed with Ash eventually trying force the issue and being revealed as a synthetic, and then rendered inoperable. And with the landing party stuck in airlock, and all succumbing to the birthing Alien, and what may follow. That would leave only the Chief Engineer, his second and one Bridge officer. The Nostromo wouldn't be going anywhere, and they'd be stranded on LV 246.
    Now finding themselves in a similar situation to the derelict. They would now have to secure the Nostromo, activate the ships distress beacon, and then put themselves into hyper-sleep to await rescue. And then pray that any rescue party doesn't, on landing, visit the derelict first.

    I liked you idea that Ash would try to open to door and let Dallas and the rest in but Ripley already overrode the controls and the door would not open with her override. The three would remain in the airlock for the quarantined 24 hours and follow their quarantine procedure and increase the suspense of the movie. The face hugger would keep Kane alive for that 24 hours. The extra time would allow the creature to grow and things would make more sense with a better time line. Then the movie would proceed like it did.

    I'd like to point out the fact that, had Ash had been anything other than the science officer / medic, the whole mission would have been scrubbed!
    It poses the bigger question of how much the company knew beforehand, and afterward.

    Ash trying to say that emotions and feelings should be used to make decisions over established rules is absolutely baffling. That's literally what you don't want to do because there's a pretty good chance it's gonna be the wrong decision.

    This is why I love the first two films so much. You care so much about what's going on that you ask questions like this. Good writing and engaging characters. Unlike the new Ridley Scott "films". What a mess.

    Honestly, I can understand why they would break quarantine in entering the ship and getting Kane into the medical bay. I just don't get why they wouldn't follow the quarantine once inside the medical bay and the condition is stabilised - since everyone was in agreement with the quarantine part, just not putting Kane's life against it. Like basically why wouldn't they still do the quarantine just inside the medical bay instead of going "oh yeah well, that alien thing that put you in a coma fell off your face, so lets all go and have lunch together in the canteen"

    Nice video, but i've a few points.
    Unless the Outer Lock was properly pressurized, Kane would have died the second the Facehugger fell off and LV-426's atmosphere entered his lungs, but assuming otherwise, a Chestburster doesn't grow so fast that it can overpower two grown humans and carry them back to the Derelict (if it can even tell where it is in the first place) before they can come up with some countermeasure. It is still a potentially lethal threat, but not the guaranteed death sentence that it poses in it's adult stage, especially when it would be a simple matter to open the Outer Lock and let it escape outside, reseal it and let Dallas and Lambert back in - or keep them in the airlock for the rest of the 24 hours if deemed absolutely necessary, but i'm sure at that point Ripley would relent and and open the inner lock for them, in face of the danger lurking just a bulkhead away. Either way, sacrificing Dallas and Lambert seems a pretty unrealistic extreme, especially when Ripley herself was willing to suit up and go out there to warn them that the Acoustic Beacon wasn't a distress call.
    Likelier scenario would be that once the Chestburster was purged out the Outer Lock, the Nostromo would take off to ensure it wouldn't remain latched to it's outer hull, Dallas and Lambert would be let back in to square off some tension with Ripley and they'd eventually return home. The real hiccup is the Xenomorph's durability. The Novelization describes it as popping like a balloon when exposed to the vacuum of Space, but Isolation portrays them as much more durable, and able to endure and even function a long time under the same circumstances. Even so, i find it unlikely that it would survive the ten month trip back to Earth on the Nostromo's outer hull, but it'd still be a short time before WY sent back a real mission to retrieve every egg on that Derelict.

    That would mean Ellen and Amanda Ripley on a infested Earth. It could make a good story. Ripley is one of the few who would realize what they were up against but would be opposed by Weyland Yutani. Ash could be a even more awesome villain in this scenario.

    I always thought Ash would've set his cryotube to open a few moments after the others went under. He then would've went back to the planet alone, collected a batch of eggs then opened the other tubes before they awoke and just long enough to let them get facehugged. He then would've sealed the tubes and set a course back to the company, probably to a blacksite, and then turned over the cryotubes to W-Y. They'd probably then set the Nostromo off into deep space and to eventually crash somewhere, where it would simply be declared lost with all hands. Ash would then likely either be destroyed, allowed to help with xeno research or be memory wiped, have his identity changed and be sent back into service somewhere none the wiser.

    The facehugger burned through kanes helmet to attach. Once it comes off and he's exposed to the methane environment wouldn't he just die? Would the chestburster be able to develop in a corpse?

    Cool video. The only thing I would add is that it is (and continues to be when taking all other films into account) unknown exactly how long the gestation process is. There is really no telling how long it was between facehugger attack and chestburster, especially in the original film. My interpretation is that it was longer than 24 hours, so keeping Cain and the rest in quarantine would have likely not prevented the eventual release of the xenomorph into the Nostromo anyway. Thoughts?

    I might have let Cain onboard but I would have insisted on some form of quarantine and isolation. Sealing the medbay, or insisting he be kept on the shuttle. This is a space ship, it has fun things like airlocks and docking tubes. The moment that chest popper ripped out, vent to space and problem gone.

    Odd and interesting that in Prometheus, the crew did not really fight at all with Meredith Vickers denying entry. In fact that one guy who David infected even volunteer to be lit up.

    Love this what if! I always think about how things could be changed. What if you were watching the movie and you were transported to different moments in the film. How could your fore knowledge of events change things? What would happen to you in these scenarios? For better or worse. Hey! I have this dvd we need to watch before we go down to the planet :)

    Ash doesn’t open the door.
    Alien comes out.
    Grabs Dallas and Lambert.
    Takes them back to the eggs.
    Now there’s three aliens.
    Nostromo crew instructed to wait.
    17 hours later, company research and development scout team arrives. 26 members.
    Ripley, Parker, Dean detained and used for research. Cat eliminated.
    2 days later there are six aliens.
    6 days later communication with scout team is lost.
    11 days later a 791 employee mobile laboratory arrives.
    etc., etc.

    Answer: The Nostromo would still be a scary ship without the alien on board. I mean seriously, did you see some of the rooms of that ship? I'd carry a flame thrower with me on that ship everywhere I'd go even if I knew for sure there was nothing on the ship that would harm me. Especially the rooms where Brett gets taken and the deleted scene where Ripley finds Dallas and Brett cocooned. The fact that the crew walks around these areas nonchalantly before the alien's arrival boggles my mind. They did a good job making the Nostromo a major character in the film.

    I believe if the scenario happened the way you're saying, mentally Ripley would've been tormented about having to leave Dallas and the rest behind.
