Burke may be the best villan of the franchise besides ash and the xenomorph itself. He's so slimy and takes no responsibility or blame, just like terrible ppl in real life.
Paul Reiser is better known for being a comedian. He starred with Helen Hunt in "Mad About You" throughout the 90s. With that said, he's proven he can do other genres. As someone already mentioned, he's in the second season of "Stranger Things." His role as Carter J. Burke is one of his best. He comes off as extremely likable at the beginning since he appears to be the only one who believes or cares about Ripley. As the film progresses, though, his image begins to deteriorate and by the end you realize how much of a despicable and disgusting sociopath he truly is.
What I always found amazing about Burke is how he basically never really showed fear until he got ganked by the xeno. Hudson was straight up panicking but the situation was so dire everyone was shitting their pants...but Burke busts out that sing some songs , make a fire line. I think he was just so caught up in his own damn hubris to understand the gravitas of the situation. Not to mention his behavior clearly showed him to be a remorseless psychopath. What an excellent villain especially in lieu of Paul Reiser being a primary comedic actor at least at the time he was. He got great range and is great.
you said it in one word. psychopath. a repressed emotional response to fear. they do feel fear, don't misunderstand, but they can't think their way into fear. Think of a meteor coming to Earth. It's here to wipe out everyone. The NEWS of this event wouldn't make them fear anything..but looking up and seeing the meteor and feeling the fear is much more likely.
The character has no empathy; is a sociopath. Everything, everyone, is a means to an end. He doesn't connect with Ripley, Newt or the marines or the colonists. Means to an end. And yes, played beautifully by the actor.
Well he wasn’t in combat with the marines. He watched everything from the sidelines. Still he did contribute pretty well. Pushing Gorman off of Ripley, putting out the fire, and attempting to offer medical aid to Hudson. Not that it redeems him or anything but still he’s not a complete moron.
It's like those police interrogations where a murderer shows no feeling or remorse, until they know for sure that they will be put away. This movie nailed it.
This channel does a better job of evoking the creepy, primordial air of dread and mystery of the Alien series better than some of the Alien films. The music, writing and overall production values make your videos a treat for both newcomers to the series and old fans alike. Keep this up!
Guilherme Almeida Yea I believe he would have went, he wanted to be the Hero in the company’s eyes. Problem is that heroism before the act blinds people to the real dangers of the situation, in this case being on the same world with a bunch of Xenomorphs. Ripley, Newt, and Hicks were dam lucky to get out alive themselves.
I always hated Paul Riser after this, that's how good of a job he did as portraying Burke as a total sleaze...even in that show he did with Helen Hunt I couldn't stand him after seeing ALIENS, lol
I like this extended conversation between Ripley and Burke. There are moments in there where Burke almost justifies actions. But Ripley forces him to own the consequences of his actions, which he blocks out disturbingly easy.
He said they lost contact with the colony 48 hours after the derelict discovery. But during the Hadley Hope deleted scene they said it takes 2 weeks to get answers from gateway. Is that Canon?
@@HumanHamCube Well they probably just stopped TRANSMITTING 48 hours after the discovery And then 14 days later earth hq could see that the last transmission was 16 days ago and then they probably gave them another week or so to hear something then decided to take action So it was probably a month of silence before they sent the sulaco
Burke is definitely one of the most underrated villains in action films. Dude was such a little shit, but from a certain point of view you could see someone like him putting am emphasis on maintaining a specimen.
I like how Burke was so ambitiously focused on greed that he went to LV-426 himself and was in the thick of it, seemingly unconcerned with the risk posed to himself until seconds before his demise.
Paul play Burke perfectly and is a great villain. When he is explaining to Ripley you can see the fear and nervousness in his face and through his body language that he's been put on the spot and is trying to weasel his way out
Yeah it was actually kinda shocking how perfect he played that role Even at the time when i first saw it i was really surprised at how believable he was
I had just rewatched Aliens and was thinking to myself how Burke thought he could actually pull off getting an Alien to the Company. Then this comes in my subscription. Man, I love this channel.
sweetvegan74 it’s addressed in the film , he pushed the facehuggers in stasis into the med lab ward where Newt and Ripley were resting in the hope of them being impregnated, 2 birds with 1 stone 1: he gets his sample 2: Ripley cannot testify in the dock against him because she will be dead 👍🏼
Excellent rundown on the Burke situation. There will always be self-interested twerps like that who make calls based on their own twisted sense of the "greater good". The sad truth is they often get away with murder.
Alien Theory The xenomorphs are simple, all they want is for their species to survive. Humans, on the other hand, are complicated species our curiousity is our greatest weapon and also our greatest weakness. The xenomorphs aren't even hunting down creatures that would be suitable for them as hosts. The hosts are the ones who stumble upon them and triggers the xenomorph species' survival insticts. Atleast the yautjas are better than humans even though it was the yautjas who scattered the xenomorphs around universe for their hunting traditions.
Sorry to be a wet blanket, but that's not for me. I like the mystery of seeing the aftermath and leaving it to the audience to imagine what went on there. Like the Norwegian camp in The Thing; I know there's a film about the events of that, but I haven't seen it, don't want to see it; plus, I've heard it's shite. Nah, I prefer being left in the dark and wondering what happened. I think that way is more effective; more creepy.
@@FerDeLance06 Exactly. It's the enduring mystery of the creatures that makes Alien and Aliens so effective. Sure it would be "fun" to see a film like that, but it would essentially be a human vs. creature feature that happens to have Xenomorphs in it.
Alien Theory is an inspired TH-cam channel. Even though I am more than familiar with the Alien(s) lore (the games, the comics, and films), your videos take that appreciation to a new level. I love the attention to detail and your obvious passion for the material. I have since picked up all six {digital) Alien movies (including Alien and Aliens Special Edition), in large part because of this channel.
If I remember correctly, she was on her way to but didn't see Newt in bed and went in to check on her, which led her to lie with Newt to get her to sleep, falling asleep with the kid. Which is when Burke struck.
In the director's cut as Ripley left Burke in that room the aliens were in the tunnel coming for them and it was a showdown between the xenomorphs and the Sentry Guns.
If Burke would have hired private contractors I feel like there would be that "Chronicles of Riddick Mercenary", dynamic character development where some of them will side with Ripley and agree that the Xenomorphs need to be destroyed while there would also be the "As long as I get paid I'll do anything" kind of characters that would side with Burke. From there we would see a very similar turn out that Aliens brought us but we would have some extended scenes where the Merc's and Burke are trying to capture specimens and sabotage as much as possible to get the Company what it wants. Burke and the Merc's would start to succumb to the desperation of survival from not only the Xeno's but the other group of Mercs who would be attempting to flee just like them. They would also resort to drastic measures to get the Aliens off the planet so Burke might have even attempted to impregnate some of his fellow Mercs similarly to how he did with Ripley and Newt. To be honest it would have made for a really interesting movie in contrast to Aliens. In fact I would go as far as to say it would be awesome to see an Aliens universe movie where WeyU actually does something similar to this!
While on paper that makes sense the reason they went with the military is because the corporation would've had a better chance of sneaking the Xenomorph through quarantine going that route versus going with mercenaries.
I, too, love the various facets of the film. The heroes were battling the Aliens, the shifting noose of bad luck (losing 1/2 the Marines in first contact, the crashed ship, damaged reactor, etc.) the pending doom of the damaged reactor exploding, and an evil double-crosser in Burke.
Heck, they lost more than 1/2, it was more like 3/4 of the Marines died in that first encounter (if you count the dropship crew). Drake nearly made it out. 5 of the 9 that entered the nest died and then you can add the drop ship crew so basically 7 of the 13 marines (if you count Bishop as a Marine).
"He woke with a groan.""Blinking, he greeted the morning with a sound all too familiar to toilets around the world.""Braaaaaap.""This was customary for him in the morning.""Only, this time was different.""Realizing the death scent of doom he unleashed on the room, he arose and began to move quickly. Fast, to the only thing he could call his savior." "That beautiful, magnificent porcelain throne.""Sitting there, exterminating his bowels, he picks up the current issue of Aliens on Earth..."

Pixar The Great "fiendishly inventive in fact " The Xenomorph is the black goo given form , & there maybe an even more effective version of the Xenomorph that we haven't seen yet
I'd rather have the Black Goo to experiment with, rather than it's product. The Xenomorphs are always dangerous to study.LIFE FINDS a way,and when she does, she makes sure to teach our dumb species a good lesson the hard way.
My only real problem with Ripley's reaction was that telling him to his face that she was going to turn him in for his crimes nearly got her and Newt face-hugged. The better solution would be to tell him that, sure, you'll go along with that...and then go quietly have a word with the marines and tell them about what he did and what he was planning to do. I rather suspect that he'd have had a little "accident" before making it back to the Sulaco.
Yes, of course that would have been the smart and logical thing to do. But that would have ruined the movie's plot quest. Have to dumb down things in the script for make for "good" cinema;)
It's a recurring topos, a bit like when you hear a character say to another "I'll tell the police/the high command must be informed/your career ends here", you already know that that guy will be killed after two seconds. It's certainly a stupid and unrealistic move, but it's hard to make the alternative make sense.
All of your videos are so freaking thorough.. also gives me the same feel as when I first watched this series. You really capture that nostalgia and I thank you for that.
@@otakurocklee Nope, sorry, Robert is right. Hudson said "I say we grease this rat-fuck son of a bitch right now." Hicks was the one who said: "okay, we waste him - no offense". Maybe you were confused to what comment Robert was referring...
Burke got his and I was happy about that. However if he had chosen to go with a private contractors he probably would have succeeded. The Marines got help from Ripley and earned respect from them. Being a flight officer she was aware of the chain of command. That is what side tracked Burke
It's a double edged sword. I agree that getting a group of mercenaries to willingly attempt to sneak a Xenomorph back to earth would've been far easier to do than going with the Marines. However, Burke would've had a much harder time getting the Xenomorph past quarantine if he went with mercenaries.
I would have liked to hear from that Weyland Yutani assessment just how exactly Burk should have sedated the hosts before the implantation. There weren't exactly opportunities to get Ripley and Newt alone for long enough to sedate them and carry the facehuggers to them without the marines noticing.
I think it was a deleted scene. But Ripley, when looking for Newt in the nest, finds Burke cocooned and infected. Burke begs her to help him and she just gives him a grenade to kill himself. A fitting end I'd say. He got a taste of his own medicine. Sure, he died before the alien could burst from him, but still.
It was the monsters final taste of humanity by being given a mercy grenade and it perfectly encapsulates why Ripley is the exact opposite of Burke. I'm glad the scene got deleted though.. it would've crapped all over the pacing of Ripley meeting the queen
It was never put into the special addition. Mainly because the timing was bad. He was captured during the attack, very shortly before newt was captured. BUT the impregnation process takes hours, at least. It would have been fitting though.
True, he is the archetype so many subsequent Company reps have been based on. Though sadly at this point I'm kinda sick of how repetitive WaylandYutani(and every other corp for that matter) being so damn cookie cutter. As MandalorGaming put it in his review of Aliens Dark Decent, "at this point it would be a twist if the company rep wasn't up to stupidly evil shit for once"
Actually, Burke's inclusion of the government was a smart one. Think about it: no matter if it had been the Marines or a private merc organization, he would still have to get past the government checkpoints in order to get a cocooned Ripley and Newt through. The impression given is that Weyland-Yutani is still subservient (to a degree at least) to a rather bloated earth bureaucracy (which in some ways, to be honest, sounds as bad as Weyland-Yutani itself in morals). Personally, I think W-Y was operating with the government's unofficial blessing. If we're talking about bioweapons research, it obviously means that government involvement for military implementation would have to come into play eventually. There would be no point to the research if it didn't, and it sounds as if the hope is in establishing profit through military usage of the xenomorphs. I suspect that bureaucrats knew far more about W-Y's operations than is believed.
I think Burke used the defense mechanism of thinking ripely was a weak and stupid woman to justify his motivations and their validity. His underestimation of her is where he set himself up for failure.
Well he kind of sized Ripley up during their initial meetings on Gateway station and to be honest Ripley was an emotional wreck from her PTSD from the Nostromo incident. Add to that the news that her daughter had lived a full life and passed away before Ripley got home. He also saw Ripley getting emotional during the Deposition hearing and it was easy for him to buy into the corporate findings that Ripley as an emotional female had let some incident panic her into self-destructing the ship. When the colony went dark after Burke had the coordinates that Ripley suppled investigated, Burke figured that the aliens were real but it was the fact that neither the Nostromo crew or the Hadley's Hope colonists had any military training or equipment that led to them being overrun and surely a Marine Platoon under his guidance, would be more than enough to handle some bugs.
He's like a character who turns on you after witnessing you defeat a boss he would have had no hope in beating. Somehow they manage to be surprised when you win.
Dude, they should hire you to do every Alien based audio book. Your voice and reading of the material is perfect! Great job and awesome content. Superb channel!
I've never really understood the whole "bio-weapon" thing, unless you want to make a planet permanently uninhabitable... and there are safer ways to do that...
I agree. Once those creatures got loose on earth and multiplied and multiplied, there would be nothing they could do to stop them. No one anywhere on the planet would be safe.
I agree - even back then in 1986 it was clear that even contemporary weapons were getting to be far more precise and lethal. How much better could weaponized Xenomorphs be than orbital bombardment, dropships festooned with missiles, and tough Marines with 10mm caseless rounds? Sure... drop a batch of these on an "enemy" planet or a rebellious colony or mining camp, and they'll be brought to heel by having everyone cocooned up and killed. Now you have to clear all of them out so that you can take over? Even from the first Alien, I've been under the impression that whoever inhabited that weird semi-circular crashed ship was more advanced than us, and yet they couldn't contain or eliminate the threat? The only thing that makes sense to me is that perhaps certain individual aspects of their biology would be studied and duplicated. The incredibly rapid tissue growth to perhaps accelerate healing in wounded troops. Acid resistant flesh that could be mimicked to improve industrial coatings or make military vehicles resistant to chemical attach or corrosive planetary environments.
Bio weapons destroy the population but leave the infrastructure intact If you were trying to capture resources it looks like a good option on paper In reality it is a different story entirely
I think it's easier to assume Weyland Yutani simply built the colony to breed Xenomorphs. I find it hard to believe they could miss something like the Derelict ship when surveying the planet...
Even so there would be several things that don't add up: 1. building such a structure would have cost a lot, so any unexpected action on the part of the colonists had to be avoided (detonating everything); 2. building a structure near the wreck, knowing that it exists, could have led to its discovery by the colonists and therefore to the revelation of that secret, and it would be better to avoid unwanted publicity; 3.considering the Ash model, the company could easily send a team of androids to investigate. Nobody would have known, and they shouldn't have even involved the military (ok, they are closely associated with the wy, but we're still talking about an entire squad lost, in addition to the colonists, of course).
Hard to believe anyone could seriously think xenomorphs would make for a good bio weapon after what burke saw firsthand. You drop those eggs on anyone, whether it's Chinese or Russian, and humanity's home planet is cursed for 1,000 years. It would be a "game over" scenario.
The believed they could modify them, control them. They were extremely arrogant. Drop a few dozen eggs onto an enemy planet/city or heck, even a competing company. The eggs would be modified to not be a queen or allow the drones to reproduce in any way. Let the drones wipe out however many and either swoop in as the hero to resolve the situation for them, then they owe you or declare the entire area quarantined due to alien infestation. Force either the government or whoever to 'sterilize' the area to make sure it never spread any further. I can think of a dozen variations that they could use them for. If they thought they could control them with an implant or some such, they could be security on/in special facilities.
@Lady Wanderer If they know what they are dealing with you mean. Also, since we already know that there are people that trying to tinker with the damn thing, it would only be a matter of time before they made it MORE lethal and virulent. And since these are ambush predators and tend to strike at prey that is seperated from others, at least near the beginning, it would be difficult for larger populations to notice multiple disappearances. By the time they realized something was wrong, they could be hundreds strong, especially since they only have roughly a 24hr incubation period from time of infection to 'birth', then perhaps and additional 12 hrs for maturation. There would be a very large force of xeno's inside the city, more than likely striking from the sewers. Office buildings and other large structures would also make good hives.
@Lady Wanderer You're kinda missing my point. The conflict we currently face is happening in relatively rural areas. Yes, there's more fighting in the cities in Iraq but most of it still happens outside the main cities. Also, these things are more like a macroscopic virus than any kind of opponent armed with firearms and explosives. You have to know who and what you're enemy and how they fight to effectively combat them. You wouldn't necessarily have that advantage when the xeno's were introduced the first time. Failed conventional assaults would do nothing more than grow the xeno's numbers. Airstrikes are possible if the hives were above ground but considering they liked to be in areas that are hot, humid, and dark, I find that unlikely. Sub basements of buildings and sewers more likely. You would have to localize the hives before destroying which you would have to do by conventional means. Nukes could potentially assist but 1) we don't know if the radiation would affect them the same way it affects humans or other lifeforms and 2) they are again in underground environments which makes them much more difficult to hit and 3) leaders are typically hesitant to start dropping nukes on habitated areas. Tends to upset the population. So, could they be wiped out? Certainly. If you did everything right, reacted in time to contain them and took steps to make sure none got out of that containment. I don't necessarily believe they would take over Earth, but they could put a serious hurt on it, especially in heavily populated areas and I think you would forever more deal with minor outbreaks forever after. All it takes is one egg and a little bit of time.
i think that it will be not used as it is at all. it is new technology people do not posses. alien, keep in the mind, is still a robot which grows like living forms. if they use it, they derive from it far more devastating weapons we can imagine now. alien is just bank/pool of horrors like pandora box. they can make indestructible viruses, bio-suites, improve genome of us or other animals to create desired effect, or create completely new species based on gained material, and so on.
İt would be a very *suicidal* situation Since it has been shown Xeno's are quite able to escape from conteintments; especially the easily breakable by acidic blood ones made by feeble Humans. Imagine Weyland-Yutani re-returned to Derelict Ship, I would watch a movie like that ! Great upload as usual ! :)
Goddess Usako I know. And including alien isolation; *all* ended with a massive bloodbath. And now imagine a movie about that shows more detailed advanced alien tech at The Derelict & New undiscovered types of Xenomorophs 👌👌👌
Great video, as always. At the beginning of Aliens Burke is so nice to Ripley and seems to genuinely care. I love Ripleys response, "I don't know which species is worse? You don't see them fighting of a god damn percentage. " Classic!
Yes! I was waiting for this video. Burke is such an asshole but I still like this character and the way they introduced him. This is the real power of Alien franchise
My theory is that Burke didn't request full funding and resources from higher up, because he was afraid some senior level exec would take over the project and get most of the credit & bonuses. So Burke tried to do this by himself, with the resources available to him, in order to protect his own standing.
The solution that the facehuggers are in have to be alkaline however more importantly have a massive upon massive ability to buffer the solution. Meaning it is incredibly resistant to change in Ph change.
Poor Paul Reiser. I don't think I ever liked a single character he played. That's only worked for him when you're not supposed to like him, like Burke!
IMO, he grows quite likeable as the scientist in Stranger Thing season 2. Anyways it takes a good actor to play such a despicable character so convincingly ^^
He was funny in Beverly Hills Cop and My Two Dads. Trouble is, after Aliens, whenever he's on screen, you always remember him as that scumbag that tried to feed a little kid to a monster
I agree Carter Burke had the right idea in mind and what he should've done was recruit some of the Marines as allies particularly Hicks, who have encountered the xenomorphs before. Hudson who had only four more weeks before his term in the Colonial Marine corps would be up there for he would have a job waiting on him with Weyland Yutani. He already had Bishop and Gorman under his command and there's not enough info on Apone, Drake, Vazsquez, Crowe, Frost, or any of the other Marines to know if they could be recruited as allies. Ripley was PTSD from the start her decisions basically compromised the entire mission as well as Carter Burke's plan to attain a few xenomorph specimens.
They had access to the medical facility at the colony. Of course he had access to any form of medical tools needed to sedate Ripley and Newt. Yes. That could have worked very well for him. However, I don't think he could have talked down the Marines so easily once off world.
I know i'm late on this one, but i'm gonna go nerd mode on this for a second bare with me. The hypothetical scenario of placing Ripley and Newt into a hyper sleep, and the remaining marines. Setting his own unit to activate several days earlier, and jettisoning the soldiers into space bar Ripley and Newt. Let's say Burke did carry out this plan, preparing a story when arriving back at a Weyland installation. As inscrupulous as Weyland Yutani were, they're basically the Umbrella Corporation in this universe, but even they were not exempt from the law. So, even if Burke succeeded in his plan, wouldn't there be other security measures in place that would check these things? Staff chiefs, ship masters, site supervisors and engineering heads and ship technicians as the main examples. It was a military operation, so on return of said operation, there would be a debriefing regardless of the marines involved being present or not. The Sulaco would be checked and serviced, meticulously. The flight recorder, the hyper sleep systems, the ships flight path, and its operational systems, etc. So any systems tampering or unusual activity logs or anomalies would be readily identified. None of which Burke would be smart enough to account for. So even if Burke did attempt such a plan, he'd be in jail before the day was through.
He could have blackmailed WY by saying, "I've send all my information to an unnamed third person." If they put him in jail or something happens to him, this person would make every dirty WY secret public.
@@Lava91point0 in real life the military stole gold and museum artifacts from Iraq. Google it. The CIA imported cocaine. Google it. Im sure a fictional corporation could pay a fictional military to bypass laws and rules just like in real life.
First of all, think you for this video! The more I watch your videos with constant references to the books, the more I keep thinking now that I need to get around to actually reading the novelizations of Alien and Aliens. As for what Burke could've done... he was pretty much pinned in a corner. Ripley had her eye on him, and likely anything more complicated than what he tried to do would've failed, as he's simply no match for her. Sedating her and Newt, assuming there was anything in the colony that would've provided such an option, would've risked waking Ripley up, at which point he'd be screwed. Likewise, there's no way he could've smuggled the facehuggers on board. No one else except maybe Bishop would've let him (everyone else wanted the aliens destroyed, even Gorman), and they're too big and dangerous for him to hide. So I say he really did the best he could've done if he wanted to smuggle an alien that bad. I dunno how he expected it to work with only a four hour window to work with, but it was the only option available to him that had a better than zero chance of success, even if it was only like 5%. Ripley OTOH should've either never confronted Burke about this, or just killed him. She could've gone to the marines with her new info instead and they'd likely kill or contain him ASAP. Not that it would've changed much in the long term. I'm fascinated by the characterization of Burke here though... he really don't seem "evil" here so much as just an emotionless and greedy bureaucrat. All his decisions are based on money, not malice... he doesn't WANT to kill Ripley, Newt, or the colonists, but he's also not particularly upset if they happen to perish in utter agony if it gets the company the alien and him his ungodly amounts of money. Which, IMHO, is actually vastly more horrifying than him being a typical slimy evil businessman. It really shows that the worst of humanity might not be some over the top sadistic psycho who revels in death and suffering, but just some bland corporate paper pusher trying to make the profit numbers go up, who is in fact just plain indifferent to it all. Psycho villains aren't super common, and aliens may or may not exist, but emotionless corporate morons are fucking EVERYWHERE IN REAL LIFE. THAT is terrifying.
I watched avp extended bluray last night, for the 1000th time. noticed 2 easter eggs. 1 at waylands radio telescope, where they have the obligatory bobbing water bird. Then wayland sat in his office on the ship, briefly doing the knife trick bishop did in aliens, but with a pen!
Interestingly enough, there was a recent book they said was canon, and in the book it basically went over that Hadley's Hope was built specifically to put WY in control of the planet and the derelict ship. They even had a group of secret scientists stationed there with their own escape ship, their sole mission to try to locate the ship and specimens. Then once Ripley returned I believe Burke was able to retrieve Ash's data off of the computer and get a firm location of the derelict, which is when he sent the Jordan's out to check it out. There was a group of survivors led by a Colonial Marine Sergeant that actually escaped just before the attack that wiped everyone out but Newt, so hopefully they'll go into more detail on that, but it kind of tied into events that WY already knew the ship was on the planet when they sent the Nostromo, so they followed up with building the colony.
If Aliens has 1 real plot hole, it's not what various people above have said (Burke, Ripley etc). I've never seen 1 word that addresses this. Q: Why did the beacon--which turned out to be a "warning: stay away" message--from the Derelict, stop??? Did the Nostromo surface team that went into the Derelict switch it off?? I don't know the faintest thing about this (scene in the Alan Dean Foster novelisation i missed, a deleted scene on a DVD set i haven't seen, etc??). The subsequent chain of events (Aliens, 1986) has major problems, it seems to me, that are all "solved" (as it were) by the beacon no longer running (that we know of) without any reason (that i'm aware of) as to why it stopped. I mean, if there's no beacon signal, there's no story (eg Alien 1 then doesn't happen). Because if the beacon continued to run, then there are major plot problems/holes. Eg: The colonisers/whomever etc would presumably have picked up the beacon, investigated etc immediately. (The Company, which "rerouted the Nostromo", had people following the Nostromo disaster go to LV-426 & locate, find & enter the Derelict, & deactivate the beacon?--but not collect a specimen etc??--& then waits over half a century to direct a colonist to it?? When i try to think this through it doesn't make a whole lot of sense. But the corporate types are known to make decisions like this ["The Corp gets the goodies in the end"]...)
@@jameshamilton8551 I'm not sure, perhaps its power source just ran out after all that time. I don't believe we ever find out how long the derelict was there. From what I recall in the comics, it took them a long time to go look for the Prometheus as well, so it may be that after they never heard back from the Nostromo they just "forgot" about it, plus I believe they were also involved trying to get the space station from ALIEN Isolation(which I believe is canon) under their control directly following the Nostromo's destruction.
Excelente trabajo recopilatorio!. No sabía que había una novela y queda muy bien como complemento de las escenas que se explicaba poco. Burke es el villano más fascinante y más real en este mundo que en la ficción. Well done!
Burke should have got himself infected and asked Bishop to freeze him and have a surgical team on standby at Gateway, to surgically remove the alien from him on immediate arrival. If he had balls he would have used himself, instead of playing Russian roulette with other peoples lives.
Berk's move was out of hate towards Ripley, he could have easily gassed them both and none would be suspicious of what have been done. Waking early and killing the other tho... Way above his pay grade, he wasn't the smartest on his feet and would it have been gun's for pay other than Marines he would have been okay. Berk's wasn't sure of his aftermath and wasn't thinking three steps ahead but only of the moment and those is the down fall of anyone who thinks out of hate. To pull anything off you must detach yourself from people and feeling. Edit. I'm new to this channel and really enjoy your reads, as if, your pulled out of the these stories trying to find something hidden in the notes. Android like but the Android's are the only ones who know more than they should...
When greed overrides logic and reason things always go bad. Although I admit, studying these creatures could give humans an advantage...but it only takes one to ravage an entire planet so studying them on Earth is out of the question.
Correct. Burke's plan was poorly thought out. It lacked execution and fall-backs. The solution was in the Jordan's vehicle. Get Bishop to secure the facehuggers in stasis, suitable for transport. Move them onto the Jordan's vehicle and buggy over several hundred miles away and wait. Once the comms was restored to the Sulaco, contact the company and request a pickup - as the reactor went critical, the company would arrive and reach the buggy location. They could've invested in researching the xenos there, or at a off-world lab for better analysis. Burk could've used the APC, as an alternative. It would've been hardened for a nuclear blast and if the axle was broken; it'd have contained the facehuggers.. multiple fall back options. Burke's options were open. He chose an option where he had to play off a vote, politics and the military. If he gathered all the medical data, testing etc and waited on the planet for a recovery team.. He'd have his success.
One thing I never understood: the company sent the Nostromo to retrieve the alien. Yet upon failure they 1) never went back and 2) built a colony on that very planet? And another thing - they didn't survey the planet and find the ship's signal or the ship itself? Are these issues covered in the book?
Great video, but question for you. I remember when I first watched the films, I always thought Burke also removed/hid the evidence of Order 937 from the previous film, so the Company trial of Ripley had no account of it for her defence (so his friendly face was always a sham). But that's why he sent the teams, as he knew she was telling the truth and didn't want anyone else stealing his glory? Thoughts? :D
Let’s all take a moment to appreciate Paul Riser’s phenomenal acting.
Absolutely! Sigourney Weaver's apparent hatred towards his character in this scene was brilliant too!

Damn u burke 😡😡
Burke may be the best villan of the franchise besides ash and the xenomorph itself. He's so slimy and takes no responsibility or blame, just like terrible ppl in real life.
Prodigal-Saiyan anything for a percentage...
The xenomorph were not evil. They followed their nature. Instincts. Burke made a choice.
Ash was a nasty piece of work, but David..smh.
Prodigal-Saiyan so the third best 🙄
Classic sociapath
I always liked how much of a sly weasel Burke was. The actor played the role great!
“That’s Mr. Sleeze to you hombre
He's currently in stranger things season 2. Great actor
Paul Reiser
Paul Reiser is better known for being a comedian. He starred with Helen Hunt in "Mad About You" throughout the 90s. With that said, he's proven he can do other genres. As someone already mentioned, he's in the second season of "Stranger Things."
His role as Carter J. Burke is one of his best. He comes off as extremely likable at the beginning since he appears to be the only one who believes or cares about Ripley. As the film progresses, though, his image begins to deteriorate and by the end you realize how much of a despicable and disgusting sociopath he truly is.
Jinsell37 I agree. I wish the movie would’ve shown more of how Burke was the real villain.
He made a bad call, Ripley. A Bad call.

Darkwing Dude ..."I'm gonna nail you to the wall. You're not gonna be able to sleeze your way outta this one! RIGHT TO THE WALL"!!!!!!!!
I like the twist that he starts off as a likeable guy, almost a potential love interest for Ripley, and he turns out to be the most evil.
Don't let any of this fool you, he's really an okay guy.

You can tell Aliens is fiction because in the real world Burke would have gotten away with it.
Martin Heermance well Burke would probably never went with the marines to begin with. He would have hired someone to represent him
Guilherme Almeida Yea I believe he would have went, he wanted to be the Hero in the company’s eyes. Problem is that heroism before the act blinds people to the real dangers of the situation, in this case being on the same world with a bunch of Xenomorphs. Ripley, Newt, and Hicks were dam lucky to get out alive themselves.

I like this extended conversation between Ripley and Burke. There are moments in there where Burke almost justifies actions. But Ripley forces him to own the consequences of his actions, which he blocks out disturbingly easy.
That final report is more chilling than what actually happened to Burke.
He said they lost contact with the colony 48 hours after the derelict discovery. But during the Hadley Hope deleted scene they said it takes 2 weeks to get answers from gateway. Is that Canon?
@@HumanHamCubetechnically yes. Even though the scene was cut. But that was cut due to timing of the film.
@@shadowbeast2276 i guess that works. I wonder if they knew that when they filmed it or whether it was a fortunate accident
@@HumanHamCube
Well they probably just stopped TRANSMITTING 48 hours after the discovery
And then 14 days later earth hq could see that the last transmission was 16 days ago and then they probably gave them another week or so to hear something then decided to take action
So it was probably a month of silence before they sent the sulaco
Burke is definitely one of the most underrated villains in action films. Dude was such a little shit, but from a certain point of view you could see someone like him putting am emphasis on maintaining a specimen.

"You know, Burke, I don't know which species is worse. You don't see them fucking each other over for a goddamn percentage."
I like how Burke was so ambitiously focused on greed that he went to LV-426 himself and was in the thick of it, seemingly unconcerned with the risk posed to himself until seconds before his demise.
Paul play Burke perfectly and is a great villain. When he is explaining to Ripley you can see the fear and nervousness in his face and through his body language that he's been put on the spot and is trying to weasel his way out
Yeah it was actually kinda shocking how perfect he played that role
Even at the time when i first saw it i was really surprised at how believable he was
I had just rewatched Aliens and was thinking to myself how Burke thought he could actually pull off getting an Alien to the Company.
I don’t know which species is worse...
Alien Theory That's for sure. We don't see them fucking each other over for a percentage.
I do. Humanity is worse. It is Burke's type of behavior, to varying degrees, that is allowed to thrive behind closed doors.
Alien Theory definetly humanity , the Xenomorph is just going on "Engineered instinct " , humans have agendas

i would have told the marines about his plan , AFTER her first confrontation with Burke
The Marines would've Code Red his sorry ass!
Neeko Bre better than anything fox made with the alien universe over the past decades
A nice concept, for sure. At the very least, seems better than A:CM narrative.
They did that, it's called " Alien Resurrection " and it still didn't bode well for everyone
I wish alien theory could narrate my life.

“You know Burke, I don’t know which species is worse; you don’t see them fucking each other over for a goddamned percentage.”

As far as i know the scene you're describing only exists in the novelization and the Newt's Tale comic from Dark Horse.
@@johngivens3rstudios254 it was indeed a deleted scene, only added in the alien anthology blu ray release, the more you know my friend!
@@johngivens3rstudios254 you can watch the scene where Rupley finds Burke on TH-cam.
Burke is the embodiment of the company in the Alien franchise.
Hmm. The line in the movie is "I'm happy to disappoint you."
The only better come back in that movie was when Vasquez was asked if she has ever been mistaken for a man and she replied "No. Have you?"
Anthony Leckie thinking Ripley survived out of sheer luck...the dickless fool...
Well he kind of sized Ripley up during their initial meetings on Gateway station and to be honest
Ripley was an emotional wreck from her PTSD from the Nostromo incident. Add to that the news that her daughter had lived a full life and passed away before Ripley got home. He also saw Ripley getting emotional during the Deposition hearing and it was easy for him to buy into
the corporate findings that Ripley as an emotional female had let some incident panic her into
self-destructing the ship.
When the colony went dark after Burke had the coordinates that Ripley suppled investigated,
Burke figured that the aliens were real but it was the fact that neither the Nostromo crew or the Hadley's Hope colonists had any military training or equipment that led to them being overrun
and surely a Marine Platoon under his guidance, would be more than enough to handle some bugs.
He's like a character who turns on you after witnessing you defeat a boss he would have had no hope in beating. Somehow they manage to be surprised when you win.
Anthony: In that T-shirt, yes, she was quite RIPEly.
It was his own arrogance ,she survived an encounter with the xenomorphs she was not weak or stupid if she was either she would not have survived
I believe you've convinced me I need to read the novelization of Aliens now.
@@leerhode1021 yeah they can create a self A.I. and call it skynet or something.
Bio weapons destroy the population but leave the infrastructure intact
If you were trying to capture resources it looks like a good option on paper
In reality it is a different story entirely
Wouldn’t “safely” making a planet permanently uninhabitable defeat the point?
I think it's easier to assume Weyland Yutani simply built the colony to breed Xenomorphs.
I find it hard to believe they could miss something like the Derelict ship when surveying the planet...
Even so there would be several things that don't add up:
1. building such a structure would have cost a lot, so any unexpected action on the part of the colonists had to be avoided (detonating everything);
2. building a structure near the wreck, knowing that it exists, could have led to its discovery by the colonists and therefore to the revelation of that secret, and it would be better to avoid unwanted publicity;
3.considering the Ash model, the company could easily send a team of androids to investigate. Nobody would have known, and they shouldn't have even involved the military (ok, they are closely associated with the wy, but we're still talking about an entire squad lost, in addition to the colonists, of course).
this guy single handidly helped me understand this film on a whole new level. so well written.
@Lady Wanderer You mean like the terrorists we deal with in Afgan and Iraq?

DS6 Prophet It probably would have been if the atmosphere processor didn't blow up.
It was. He wasnt killed immediatedly but inpregnated and cocooned in a deleted scene.
Didn't Ripley give him a grenade but he chickened out using it while he was cocooned?
Daniel Roberts It sure was satisfying to see Ripley burn them to the ground!
The alternative version of his death gave him just that:

I made a vid to add to this vid. My comment was too long. So I made a small vid. Enjoy.

Certainly one possibility, one I wouldn't have thought of!
The solution that the facehuggers are in have to be alkaline however more importantly have a massive upon massive ability to buffer the solution. Meaning it is incredibly resistant to change in Ph change.
Awesome vid. This is always one of the stories ive had an interest in and now an expert has covered it :D
I think Carter Burke is a good analog for a lot of corporations in the real world these days. Profits before people.
Reminds me of the company I worked at and glad I'm not there anymore.
Poor Paul Reiser. I don't think I ever liked a single character he played. That's only worked for him when you're not supposed to like him, like Burke!
IMO, he grows quite likeable as the scientist in Stranger Thing season 2. Anyways it takes a good actor to play such a despicable character so convincingly ^^
any actor who's hated by their role is doing their job.
Not even Beverly Hills Cop
Sweet info bro, good work there as always!! 👍
I just love how the characters in all Alien films dress like its still pre-2000, and idk why
They had access to the medical facility at the colony. Of course he had access to any form of medical tools needed to sedate Ripley and Newt.
Yes.
That could have worked very well for him.
However, I don't think he could have talked down the Marines so easily once off world.
Agreed. It's not like the Marines were oblivious to how dangerous the Xenomorphs were by the time Burke would've had the opportunity to go this route.
I remember as a kid celebrating when he went through the door and there was an alien the other side
Fickle nit picking and if Weyland Yutani saw a profit they'd circumvent the safety protocols and pay the military to get their things.
@@kevthepoet Probably.
"the banality of evil"
I watched avp extended bluray last night, for the 1000th time. noticed 2 easter eggs. 1 at waylands radio telescope, where they have the obligatory bobbing water bird. Then wayland sat in his office on the ship, briefly doing the knife trick bishop did in aliens, but with a pen!
I often wondered why Ripley wanted Burke to go back. Thanks for clearing that up.
Pail Reiser played the role of Burke perfectly. Kudos for his acting.
I do remember some of that dialogue from the book, thank you for sparking that memory. I'm new to channel and really dig what you are doing.
LMAO "more than angry words"
To quote Hudson's "You're dogmeat pal!" in a way YES he he.
Paul Reiser makes a convincing sleaze-ball.....too convincing
Excelente trabajo recopilatorio!. No sabía que había una novela y queda muy bien como complemento de las escenas que se explicaba poco. Burke es el villano más fascinante y más real en este mundo que en la ficción. Well done!
Sadly in 2018 most of this generation don't even know about this movie. These pre-CGI movies are so good.
247tubefan I tried to explain by referencing Alien saga.
Shocked the amount of people who don’t know the classics. Glad 80’s and 90’s stuff is becoming popular again.
The last great pratical movie without cgi__ Tremors :-p
Burke should have got himself infected and asked Bishop to freeze him and have a surgical team on standby at Gateway, to surgically remove the alien from him on immediate arrival. If he had balls he would have used himself, instead of playing Russian roulette with other peoples lives.
I could only risk my ass like that for a boss I KNEW wasn't going to phuck me...I don't trust Weyland Yutani.
This movie was lightning in a bottle
Is there any source material for the brain parasites from Actura??? Please, very interested.
Great video!! Always a pleasure to see new content from you!
Such an underrated villain in the franchise.
Paul Reiser was so good in this role I've never been able to buy him in nice guy roles.
I thought the company knew about the existence of Xenos long before Alien 1.
One thing I never understood: the company sent the Nostromo to retrieve the alien. Yet upon failure they 1) never went back and 2) built a colony on that very planet? And another thing - they didn't survey the planet and find the ship's signal or the ship itself? Are these issues covered in the book?
“Alright, we waste him. No offense.” 🤓
These Alien/Aliens novelizations sound awesome. I might go see if Audible has them.
Hey bro u are amazing thank you for showing this
Cool Story. Thanks for sharing 👍
Thoughts? :D
This makes a hell of a lot more sense than the original version.
i love your channel. just incredible amount of detail, work and professionalism
This added a lot more depth and backstory to the scenes mentioned in this video.
