I always thought Apone was authentic. Learning that he was a USMC Sgt in Vietnam, now I am not surprised. Much like R Lee Ermy nailed the DI in Full Metal Jack by simply playing what he knew, Al Matthews gave the same type of performance in Aliens with Apone and it showed in the authenticity of the entire unit. His "Look into my eye" comment to Hudson conveyed awesome menace and retribution and that had to be improvised. Only a SGT knows how to convey menace like that in so few words. Rest in Peace Sgt Apone.

Really wish he had more screen time at least until the near end of the movie. He deserved it.

If the Marines taking on extraterrestrial life was an everyday thing for this Same team of soldiers, it really makes you realize how lethal and terrifying the xenomorphs are when they wiped out all these Marines who've definitely had experience fighting space monsters before.

I remember that in some military units "bug hunting" is annoying check of whole area looking for hidden people and places.
It actually fit a bit story of aliens because they expected to spend time wandering in base looking for colonists.
This makes so much more sense than the story he just told. I feel like if they had already been experiencing crazy aliens like this, they would have reacted different than they did when they experienced the xenomorph.
I'm a veteran and have never heard that term except in film.

Apone was one of my favorite characters. This series always kill strong and charismatic "leaders" too early - Dallas in Alien, Apone in Aliens, Clemens & Andrews in Alien 3, Elgyn in Resurrection
Dillon on Alien 3 lasted all the way to the end of the movie, he was charismatic & inspirational, got the cons to do what he & Ripley wanted. Lol the leader on 'Covenant' dies before he's even introduced.
That could be deliberate. Killing off the leadership of any unit or group is demoralizing, so it is easy to create confusion and fear among a group when there is no central figure to lead them. That way whatever is attacking them can pick off stragglers and breakaway factions early on, leaving less threats to deal with later. Also, losing members increase paranoia, and leads to internal fighting, making it even easier for an assassin to kill marks.
In original script he lasted alot longer but was stung by an alien stinger tail so was unconscious for alot of it . studio execs probably thought instead of paying him to lie on a stretcher for the rest of film just save money and kill off the character instead

That is done for the horror element. If you are in a squad you follow your leader, if your leader dies aka your smartest most experienced person, it adds a new element of horror. Subtle, but there. It also drops the combat effectiveness of a particular unit. You want these aliens to feel scary, to feel like a true enemy. If someone beats up the strongest person you know, would you want to fight them?
Gorman: Morning Marines. Im sorry we didn’t have time to brief you people before we left gateway but...

Gorman: What is it, Hicks?

@@acloserlook5823 yes she did. Her biological daughter died of old age. Newt was still a kid and I think her death was harder for Ripley because she was there for the death and "burial" in person. Her daughter was long gone by the time Ripley was awakened. I'm sure it was painful but she didn't go through it like she did Newt's.

It’s because the Alien franchise is so much more than a horror. It’s sci fi, action, comedy, the storyline of the evolution of the alien species. Although the last Alien film was shit.

Your style of video would make for some great adaptations of some of these Bug Hunt short stories. Some I can see you doing are Broken, Exterminators, Dark Mother (as they expand on the characters from Aliens) & Deep Background, Deep Black and Dangerous Prey (simply because they are badass).

Great video! I’ve always been curious about the bug hunt they mentioned in the film. They actually made it sound like a cake walk, but these life forms are comparable in deadliness to the Xenomorphs.
The description of the lifeform just sounds like a different kind of xenomorph though. "Black, glossy...hands like razors...Eyes hidden behind a membrane...

This is actually so damn cool. Same feel as old radio shows my dad used to listen to over 70 years ago. Same effect, the viewer/listener has to use their imagination, visualization. Guided meditation of a sort, takes the brain out for a walk around the block. Nice work.

Cool video but the story in Bug Hunt doesn't really fit too well with the use of the phrase bug hunt in Aliens. From the way Hudson said it I got the impression that bug hunt meant a trivial, boring mission chasing annoying little pests. If bug hunt meant a very dangerous mission that could kill you I think they would have taken the briefing a lot more seriously.
He asked if it was another bug hunt or a stand up fight. As a former Infantryman. Stand Up fight is a fight against another military unit.

Making the "bug hunt" into an event seems to go against the dismissive tone that Hudson uses when he mentions it. It always sounded like it was akin to a wild goose chase, and that they never actually saw any action.

The movie props hint that they had previous experience with extraterrestrials. The emblem on the side of the landing craft, which ended up being too small to see in the actual film, says, "Bug Stompers: We endanger species," implying that massacring aliens on behalf of human settlers is the main role of the colonial marines. Since this emblem is not actually visible, it is ambiguous in the first two Alien films whether humans had ever encountered extraterrestrial species before.

So in other words, yes, this will be another bug hunt. The dialogue in the movies is meant to make a bug hunt sound like exactly that, something easy and trivial. It's like the comic book authors completely forgot that halfway through writing this and turned it into a Starship Troopers fanfic that completely contradicts the dialogue. You had one job!!!

I always thought that line in the film meant they'd been sent out to hunt for bugs but never found any as Hudson asks if is this gonna be a stand up fight . And if they'd faced bugs like in this story then they would not have been over confident like in the movie or so freaked out by the aliens .

Just brought Bug Hunt and read this story along with a few other shorts with the Aliens Marines. Nice to read a bit of backstory on these characters and give some of the quiet ones a bit more to do.

I've never noticed until watching this video, but what do the marines consider the difference between "aliens" and "bugs"? When the crew wakes up out of hypersleep in Aliens, Ferro and Vasquez have the following interaction:
Vasquez: Ey, mira. Who's Snow White?
Ferro: She's supposed to be some kind of consultant. Apparently, she saw an alien once.
But the way Ferro delivers the line makes it sound (at least to me) like "aliens" are this really unknown thing to people in that universe. Then later during the briefing, Hudson asks if it's "gonna be a stand-up fight, or another bug hunt". So clearly (as this video explains) they've been on bug hunts before. So then do they not consider "bugs" to be "aliens"? Maybe they're under the impression that an "alien" is a more intelligent, humanistic type of creature than a "bug"?
I got the impression that they'd all seen aliens before, so it was more sarcasm than nonbelief. But those are just my thoughts
What i really enjoyed was the retcon of alien 3 and the full voice cast performance. It's on audible and possibly on .. youtube. But it's only a legend
If I may say something on here. Corporal Dietrich I feel like she was the Marines Corpsman, witch is a Navy/Marines job. there for she should have a Navy rank. The reason why I say this is due to when they found Newt and LT Gorman, Ripley and Corporal Dietrich had Newt sitting on that table, Corporal Dietrich was the one who gave Newt that on the spot check up like a Doctor. Sorry if I made a short story long.

I think the Colonial Marines are meant to combine all previous SpecOps fighting forces into a single fighting force. :)
@@sigmacademy could also be that because corporations essentially own all of the nations there is no need for so many obligatory factions of the military.
That could also be it. The thinking behind it could be that it is simply more resource efficient to have a big military force than have several smaller ones - the training, equipment and organization could be streamlined and standardized into a much better fighting force.
Of course, you would still have crack units/veteran units, but those you could use for black ops, specialized missions or training academies.
think of the heavily armored Weyland-Yutani troops from the end of Aliens 3
I think the Crew Chief of Colonial Marine drop ship ( Spunkmeyer ) survived the mission on LV426. He decided not to board the ship after putting his hand on an alien turd. After seeing the ship crash, he realized that he needed to hide. He found shelter in a cave which allowed him to also survive the blast from Hadley's Hope.

It's cool wherever you got all this background information about the lesser known characters, nice one.
I like this alternate fiction. But I always got the feeling that the 'bugs' were pretty much just that. A pretty basic species that offered a limited threat and as opposed to being aggressive to colonists or research teams just needed to be cleared out for convenience. The marines seemed pretty flippant and blase when recalling them. That would indicate they hadn't encountered much resistance never mind lost squad members. They seemed pretty startled when under attack in the Xeno hive and terrified when squad members were killed or abducted as if they had never encountered such circumstances and resistance before.

I also recall Colonial Marines fighting anoher faction called the UPP, sort f Soviets in space, the UPP also used "combat androids" alongside their foot soldiers that sort of looked like Terminators. I would like to see that expanded on, they only appeared in the DS game Aliens Infestation.

My dad was a Viet Nam vet and I've heard him use the term "bug hunt" before. Basically it meant you had to do a useless patrol or task where the only thing you end up finding are the boat load of insects the hung around. He used it in other contexts too but always as to mean a worthless task, much like "wild goose chase". I wonder if that has any influence on the phrase.

I love Aliens. That said, I appreciate your work on the video, but the story doesn't fit anything of what we see in the film. Part of what makes Aliens work is that the marines have zero experience with anything as dangerous as the Xenomorphs, and are completely overwhelmed by their numbers, viciousness, and creep factor. The hive and life cycles of the Xenomorphs instantly blow their minds and seeing a new one be born threw most of them into a panicky state. If they had just come off a mission like this, where they were fighting man-sized locusts with razor sharp claws and exploded in fire when they died, the Xenomorphs just become par for the course.
The 'bug hunts' the colonial marines have been on before were likely against annoying, mildly aggressive 'critters' that were probably like oversized cockroaches. A cockroach doesn't seem like a problem, but a load of them the size of a chihuahua becomes a very disgusting extermination job. Also, the Marines had two complete fireteams and the only replacement mentioned was Gorman; these other marines mentioned in the written tale as fodder for the story would have had a psychological impact on the survivors coming into the LV-426 mission. They would have been way less cocky, way more believing of Ripley, way less likely to just into that hive and give up their ammo.
Overall, I can see the appeal of the story for fleshing out the Aliens universe, (which, c'mon... who wouldn't want to do that?), but this story for a set up doesn't fit with where the marines start in the film. To be fair, this unit of marines before heading to LV-426 seems to have been a successful team, but not exactly the crack commandos of the Corp. I think that's why they were the chosen for the mission with Burke; according to the unit records, they're good enough to get the job done, but with a new lieutenant and two squads mostly of middle tier talent, they aren't likely to make waves against Burke's ideas and orders.
If they had the experience described in the book, they would have been a completely different unit in the film. Part of what makes the film work is just how no one but Ripley and Newt really know how terrifying these things are and have no frame of reference, despite thinking they've seen it all.
This seems more like the reality portrayed in the films. Agreed its great fun but seems like a stretch.
Reminds me of the casual comments about Arcturians that some of the marines may have slept with during a leave of absence. Its stated they all look alike and cant tell males from females. What does this mean? An actual alien species? Or humans that live on a colonized planet and have a gender fluid culture? Its not explained.
Just like Vasquez's bug hunt comment the ambiguity brings questions and stokes the imagination. We are not sure if it is slang for a wild goose chase or if they've actually been used as exterminators on various planets against invasive species.
Ah man I always LOVED Apone, he's such a cool character, and so well portrayed. Pretty sure the actor was really a USMC veteran. All of the colonial marines in Aliens are so cool and memorable, absolutely believable as jaded marines that get in over their head.

Huh it's neat to see hostile alien creatures that aren't xenomorphs, deadly in their own way with their own abilities and mannerisms. Not sure what to call them locusts seem like a lame name , did I hear black Kite In the story ?
Just goes to show you - the galaxy/universe is a dangerous place. It also makes sense from the Predator universe as well. Remember the Predators hunt the most lethal prey they can find. This proves that there are pretty dangerous lifeforms out there. XD
However, based on the The Predator movie recently released, they inject themselves with alien DNA. So what happens if the DNA is incompatible? That would be the equivalent of injecting yourself with a dirty needle and with an unknown substance of which you don't know what the outcome will be? How do you inject yourself with Xenomorph DNA in any case, when their blood is acid? XD

Gorman said there might a xenomorph involved. The term xenomorph is a generic term for extraterrestrial lifeforms.

Awesome. How great would this have been as a Directors cut after Ripley is found. An extra 45 mins of their mission then to the ship waking up etc. Aliens Ultimate Edition 4 hours of heaven haha

It's refreshing to see a threat other than the xenomorphs in this universe. By no means are these razor-winged bugs going to replace the xenomorphs, that's an impossible task, but they do make for a compelling secondary threat.

Game over man, game over! Vasquez, Hicks, Hudson, Apone, Newt and of course Ripley. These characters are like extended family in my imagination. I've lost count how many times I have watched Aliens since I was a ki.
You’d think they’d have gone in at least at platoon strength, also leaving absolutely no one on the ship during an OP is crazy town. I know the pilots returned but you’d have personnel on that ship at all times. I know it’s a movie, one of my favorites, but these details have bothered through the years.
I love alien bug hunt! I've been reading different short stories in between reading the novelizations of the movies! I definatly recommend them to any alien fans that lile to read!
At 2:19 . . . "The man (Sgt. Apone) wasn't much older than herself (Pvt. Vasquez) . . ." Vasquez looked like he was in her twenties, whereas Apone was obviously in his thirties.
At 2:06 . . . "Vasquez: 'Yes, sir. Sergeant, sir!"
Any sergeant anywhere at any time, "You don't call me 'sir'; I work for a living!"
Vasquez was probably being sarcastic - a "smart-ass," in Marine-speak.
