2024 Ford Ranger Raptor Tonneau Cover install. BAK X4S from Realtruck

  • I bought this thing to keep my stuff dry and relatively safe in the back of my truck. I went with the X4S without the T-slot rail system because i am going on a camping/road trip in a week and the X4ts was going to take 2+ weeks to arrive. I am happy that this leaves the 3 mounting hard points on each bedrail accessible for future bed rack install.
    The little end caps came broken on my cover which was a bummer but RealTruck.com already put in the ticket to ship out new caps for me at no cost.

    I have the same Tonneau cover on my Raptor Ranger except I got the X4TS with T Slots so I can mount tents and such on it. I have a set of Go Rhino Crossbars under my Thule Tepui Explorer Rooftop tent and the setup works flawlessly for anyone looking for some overlanding advice for these trucks!
    Great install video!

      yeah, i am going to put a rack on the back but i wasn't too confident in the security of mounting a couple hundred pounds to the rails of a tonneau cover that is just pinch clamped to the bed rails. I plan on finding a rack that mounts directly to the mouting hardpoints on the bed rails. I'm sure it will be fine on a tonneau but i just feel more comfortable mounting directly to the bed.

    I really have to laugh every time I watch one of your videos because you do exactly what I do. When I first got the truck I did a line x spray in bedliner, which I would highly recommend for you before you destroy that bed and I had the same tonneau cover installed, Thie biggest difference between you and me is I have to pay people to do the work because I am not mechanically inclined. On a side note, my truck did that thing again last night with the engine. It has happened after driving the truck on a very hot day for about a half hour, shutting it off, and then trying to start it again within an hour or so. Keep the videos going!!! You also are like me in that I do something and then realize I should have done the steps in a better order :)

      @flaberdoopin  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      man, that sucks about your start up issue happing again. hopefully it is something simple that the dealer can fix without keeping the truck for an extended period. Good luck getting it sorted out. I ended up moving the straps to one of the threaded holes in the bed that are further back and it is working perfectly the way i want now... this thing gets hotter than fire in the VA sun... i can barely touch the freaking thing!

      @scottstaniewicz688 หลายเดือนก่อน

      What is your truck doing on start up? Is it a rattle noise for a few seconds? If so it's the cam phaser issue some people have been reporting. How many miles?

    • @rentalcarman
      @rentalcarman หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@scottstaniewicz688 Thanks for inquiring. The truck has 1834 miles on it. So, upon start up, the motor shakes violently and goes in to limp mode, the check engine, wrench, check 4x4, and pre-collision not working lights come on. After sitting for a considerable time, the truck starts with no issues and only the check engine light remains on. We pulled the code, and it is P2112 for the throttle body stuck closed. It's actually at the dealer now because it did it a third time. The ordered a new throttle body and if that doesn't totally fix it, they will have to replace the PCM. The only thing the issues had in common was it was a very hot day, I would drive for approximately 30 minutes, turn it off and then try and restart it again within half an hour to an hour. I almost wondered if the heat caused an issue, but the dealer can't confirm. It is a bit disheartening. The truck is an awesome beast otherwise.

    This seems to be one of the best options. Just be aware of the design from a security perspective. Most of the covers with that cable-pull design can be easily opened with a coat hanger. Most people that use these types of covers know that they are not very secure, but thought newbies should be aware of just how easy they are to open.

    • @flaberdoopin
      @flaberdoopin  หลายเดือนก่อน

    • @flaberdoopin
      @flaberdoopin  หลายเดือนก่อน

      that is great to hear. i dont expect it to stay completely dry because there are big old gaps in the tailgate itself away from the tonneau but it'll be better than nothing... i'll just keep all my stuff in tubs back there to make sure it all stays dry.

  • @AlexandStuff
    @AlexandStuff หลายเดือนก่อน

    Very nice. I just realized how much easier it is to get the weather strip to stick when you dont have the spray in bedliner. They have an awesome warranty if you end up breaking anything. Also, I put additional clear silicon caulk over the clips on my end piece that broke on yours. I saw that as a potential weak spot on previous videos and did preventative maintenance.

    • @flaberdoopin

    The small pieces, i think are bumpers so when its rolled up the cover doesn't smack your window.

    • @flaberdoopin
      @flaberdoopin  หลายเดือนก่อน

      interesting. that makes sense to me. the way this thing hinges at the very end, it cant roll far enough to hit the window though... it is bolted down to the rails and the last 4-5 inches of the cover are solid and. each thing can only articulate so far... either way, it is working really well and i like it a lot... but it sure does get hot as heck in the sun! can barely touch the dang thing.

      @@flaberdoopin Roll the cover open. Than stick those bumpers on, to prevent the roll from touching the cab. You'll see where they have to be attached....Mine keep falling off into the bed and will have to get some kind of glue to keep them in their place permanently.

  • @ChesnikT
    @ChesnikT หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    I would have helped you, same process as the X4TS I just installed, the endcaps are something they re-engineered for the X4TS so they didn't come broken and shouldn't break as easily. Like someone else said the extra weather strips are for bumpers to protect the glass when the cover is rolled up. I left them off too as it seems like it won't be able to hit the glass.

  • @pcoakle1
    @pcoakle1 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    Nicely done. I must say that those end-caps shipping broken is not a great confidence-booster for that tonneau cover. I see those being the weak link in that cover. I assume they have to come on and off in order to remove or stow that cover. I would buy extra if I were you, you're gonna need them. I am sure they had to really think those caps out, but maybe a better design would have been to incorporate them into the cover end and let them just roll up with the whole cover. The cover does look nice though; hope they resolve that qc issue for you.

    • @flaberdoopin
      @flaberdoopin  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      they are sending new ones but i am already working on getting them attached with a little plastic rivet and it seems to be working pretty well... i'll keep an eye on it... other option is to drill a second hole in the cap piece and use a small zip tie to hold it down and then add some hot glue or black silicone to the top above the zip tie to keep it water tight. Either way, i'll keep on the company until they send out some new ones, but until then i'll make it work!

    Hello, finally, my RR is scheduled to build on 8/19. I hope they won't push it. I'll order X4St, which is new with T slot rails, so you can install crossbars for example rhinorack.

    • @flaberdoopin
      @flaberdoopin  หลายเดือนก่อน

      i looked at that one as well... i am going to go with a bed rack that connects directly to the stake holes in the bed rails, the X4S leaves them completely accessible. I just feel a little more secure with that with some of the offroading, that's a lot of weight getting tossed about if you put a shower and a roof top tent up there to have connected to the tonneau cover that is held on with the aluminum pinch clamps but that is just my over engineering brain telling me that i should go that way, i know plenty of guys and gals that installed their systems in the T-slot rails on tonneaus with no issues. Hopefully your build goes quickly and you get your truck earlier than expected!

      my only concern with the fold up was that it blocks the rear window when it is all the way up but if it comes out really easy that wouldn't be a problem. I like the idea of the rollup and it looks really good... i have had the trifolds in the past as well and they are super strong for sure but like i said, i like to see out the back window and if you have stuff in the back that forces the tonneau to be all the way open you cant use the rear view mirror... not a big deal to most people but it was a deal breaker for me personally.
