It always surprises me how playing just one note is enough to get the head bobbing. I truly appreciate all you are doing here.. You have a gift of not only being a good teacher bot also giving me (or us) a feeling we are in the same room learning from you and not just watching a screen on the computer.
Yeah, the bass is so powerful for that. Years ago I was jamming with some young guys, and guitarist took this wild ass solo with a whole bunch of effects just washing over us, and I came out of his solo just playing a single note groove similar to what Rich is doing here. The other guys were visibly ecstatic with what I was doing, although technically it was nothing compared to the guitar solo. That taught me a lot about the value of simplicity. But I keep having to re-learn it, and videos like this are helpful.
You have helped transform me from a drummer to a musician. Drums are still where my heart is, but with you as a teacher, the sky is the limit. Thanks again
Everything about bass playing begins right here in this lesson. Because groove is where it’s at! The title got my attention. I didn’t bother to get my bass. I was having too much fun counting 1 2 (e&a) 4, 1 2 e (&a) 4. Where would popular music be without groove? It wouldn’t exist. Great job.
GREAT exercises Man!! Funny how it's so easy when ya play ALL the notes, but when ya start dropping them out, the trickier it gets. I enjoy your vids very much!! Thanks!!
Fortunately, I learned early on the value of having the metronome click on the 2 and 4, as Rich does here. Makes all the difference for practice. Also, it's fun to throw some fast licks in the space between the root note groove. But ... the groove is still king. Respect it!
I can't get enough of Rich Brown's lessons. The pentatonic videos opened the entire fretboard for me and these groove lessons are helping me to use all of those notes correctly. I've gotten plenty of tips from other instructors on TH-cam, but Rich's style is so clear and cool. No shouting, no flying graphics to distract, just the tools needed to make all the friends and neighbors better players.
That means more than I can say. Thank you so very much. I really want these videos to feel like a one-on-one lesson in my living room, not a flashy youtube video. Thank you so much for watching, and I can't tell you how happy it makes me to know these videos have helped. All the best!
Rich! I just found you this is just what I need!! I've been thrown into playing bass for a band... I've been playing guitar for years, and realize that I'm challenged in this department!! Curse of the guitar player switching to Bass!! I'm going to follow all of your lessons and metronome studies and I'm sure this will help me immensely!! Thank You again Rich!!
From cerebral to spiritual in the blink of an eye. It’s like musical alchemy. I’ve stopped lesson surfing with other (great) bassists because Rich has me turning lead to gold so quickly. Go on with your bad self !
Mister Brown, Thats a RESPECT MISTER. Ur prolly my age and we're stil young. I love ur videos! This groove video is KILLER! Thx for all u doo for we Bass Players! Bless U my friend, dUg-Montesano, WA/USA
Thank you for this lesson, great tips and teaching style. I recently tore a tendon in my fretting hand and working on rhythm and timing is just the thing while healing.
Oh my gosh, I have to work this when I get home with my bass. I love fingerstyle and 6th notes, but I’ve always played by feel, not truly able to count everything. Thank you Sifu.
This video was exactly what I needed today, after a long grind at work. Keep up the great work, and please keep in mind: I would welcome any printed instructional book you'll come up with in the future! Love your positivity! Best wishes & much love from Germany, Patrick
Damn You TH-cam !! I Was Thinking About You On Friday And Realized You Have Been Rather Quite - So I Just Popped Over To Mr Rich's Page Here And This Recent Video Was Uploaded 5 Days Ago - What Up With That YT - This Is Definitely One Of Your Better Tutorials For Sure - And Your Editing Skills Have Dramatically Improved Tremendously - I Could Imagine The Kick Drum On A Simple 1 2 3 4 Beat And I Am So Digging The E & Ah Pocket Groove - Then, Those G Minor Notes Sounds So Musical In Reference To My Basic Scale Exercises - Like A Whole New Demission To My Practice Skills - My Mind Race To The 4 Bar Concept Of 1st And 3rd Bars With The First Four Notes, The 2nd Bar With ONLY The E &, And The 4th Bar With E & Ah - Thank You So Much For Explaining This Workout, Thank You For The "Slower" 80 BPM, And For Helping Us All Out With Your Precise Enlightening Guidance - AND More Importantly, So Thankful That You Are A OK !!! Go Team Human Cheers
80bpm - beats 1 & 3 are off 2:45 - 4 notes leading to 2 then take away the first note take away the second note take away the third until only the "a" remains
Thanks, man. I'm going direct into a Focusrite interface and recording on Logic. Check out this vid for more info. th-cam.com/video/PSNijnypgBg/w-d-xo.html
Stay tuned, friends & neighbours. Part II is coming soon.

The calibre of instruction here is second to none. What a thrill it is to watch an expert bassist and teacher in their element.
That means a lot, brother Matt. Hope we can play again soon.
