This song is the song of a young man who has fallen into depression, addiction, and self-hatred and wants it all to be over. The Johnny Cash version is the song of an old man who has lived an incredible life, but now that it is ending he feels regret for all of the harm he has caused that he can never make up for. "Hurt" is a perfect example of how people who observe art (reading a book, looking at a painting, hearing a song, etc.) give it meaning based on their own interpretations.

But cash also fell into depression at an early age, feeling responsible for his brother’s death...eventually drug addiction and self hatred...no matter how famous he was getting he never felt good enough for his dad...blah. And yes the hurt he caused his family and friends through the years.

  • @TheNeonParadox

It's the last song on their album called The Downward Spiral, which is a concept album about someone's complete decline into depression and drug addiction, and eventually suicide. It's very heavy and very accurate, speaking as a person who has struggled with both for 39 years.

Cash's version is a heartbreaking song of a man at the end of his life looking back at everyone he hurt. Reznor's is the depressing story of a young man destroying himself.
The album this song comes from is called the Downward Spiral. It follows a protagonist loosing his mind to a dark alter ego called "Mr Self Destruct". It is dark and very uncensored (man with a big gun stands out for its themes). But as an album it is lyrical and sonic perfection. It goes from ugly driving riffs and and programmed drums to beautiful yet unsettling piano. Simply a must listen from track 1-14

Yes! Trent’s version had the unsettling energy of someone on the verge, Cash was someone on the end-side of life looking back. Both are powerful but Trent’s version really affects me, it’s like hearing the thoughts of someone who’s really about to lose their mind. Terrifying.

The best way to describe the 2 versions of hurt: Trent Reznor sounds like someone who is currently going through the hurt and pain. Johnny Cashs version sounds like a person reflecting on their lifetime of hurt and pain.

That is so true. I was an addict for 24 years. All you have is a world of hurt. Your peers have a life. You look at them with envy, knowing you will never have that life. All you have are the drugs and the pain. You want to stop, you want to leave it all behind, but you can't. So you sit in your misery only thinking about your next hit. Even though Trent wasn't a heroin addict, this song is so true.

Every time I hear hurt these days I can’t help be so proud of the healthy place that Trent has come to in his life. He’s on his way to becoming an old man himself now and I’m so happy that he persevered and made it through the darker years because there were certainly times when it felt like he wouldn’t have. Beautiful song all the way around and shows how a song is just a portal and what comes before or after can be different every time.

That's because for Trent, his story still had more chapters left. He had the ability to change the things he was going through and "fix" his life. His story ultimately has hope for a happy ending. Johnny was in the epilogue of his book. His story was over and the pain, regret and things that could never be fixed in himself or between him and others is just gut wrenching. One is a reality check that we as listeners know isn't really the end. The other, the painful realization of the life he led and no hope of redemption.

I would love for you to listen to more Nine Inch Nails. Songs like Sin, Reptile, Even Deeper, The Perfect Drug, Copy of A, so many great songs to choose from. Trent Reznor (who wrote pretty much everything up until the 2000's when Atticus Ross [who I also love] joined) is a musical genius in my mind, who's even won a couple oscars for movie soundtracks.

Fun fact, Trent Reznor has won 3 Grammys (not surprising) but he has also won 2 Oscars (for the scores for "The Social Network" and the Disney movie "Soul"), and an Emmy (for the soundtrack for the miniseries "Watchmen"). There is talk of making "Soul" into a musical which would give him a chance at winning a Tony and becoming the 13th person to win the EGOT (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, Tony)...

I heard Reznor said after hearing Cash's version "It's his song now". Reminds me of Dylan hearing Hendrix's version of "All Along the Watchtower" and saying he plays that version in concert now. "The Downward Spiral" is very much a literal album title. It's like if you took a Linkin Park album and injected it with more heroin and maybe some steroids. It's not a series of songs but an atmospheric mind-meld experience that will leave you mentally exhausted. I found it somewhat therapeutic, in a weird sort of way. Reznor's experimentation with digital sounds and instruments is amazing. In 2008, NIN released a concept album of just different sounds, called Ghosts I-IV. They released it digitally over the Internet.

Edited to add, and someone probably has already, when the album was done Trent said something along the lines of “I’m sorry, but it had to be done”
It is raw and gritty and so honest. It blew me away the first time I heard it.

Yeah some of the lyrics of this song are soul-crushing. "trying to kill it all away, but I remember everything" is definitely a devastating line. People often talk about substances and say things like "itll help you forget your troubles" and in some sense theyre right. But only temporarily, and only if those troubles are something you can actually put out of your mind. If something is truly bothering you, you actually cant escape it, no matter how hard you try. I feel like this line encapsulates that, but also the desperation one feels trying to escape something truly terrible that has happened. "kill it all away" is so apt, its almost like chemo where you think you can hurt yourself some but hurt the thing inside of you more to the point where it will go away but youll still survive. But the sad truth is "I remember everything" you cant make that stuff go away. As long as you keep waking up in the morning you have to take that stuff with you, whether you like it or not. And that truth is a hard pill to swallow to say the least. Other lyrics in the song are equally meaningful, "my empire of dirt" could have an equally long comment written about it. Great song, love the channel Lboyd, keep it up

Trent and NIN still touring and putting out Fantastic music!! Last time I saw them was 3yrs ago and they're beyond amazing live...STILL!!! Trent Reznor is Genius Level in his production, lyricism, and as a front man who commands the stage. If you told me as a teen when this came out that Trent would be one of the biggest score producers in Hollywood and racking up Academy Awards, I would've laughed and said no way in hell!...yet here we are. Everything he touches is pure gold!! I suggest starting early and progressing through their catalog. Terrible Lie, Head Like a Hole, Something I Can Never Have, Sanctified, Sin are great starting points. I love the progression from album to album, each decade of NIN just gets better and better esp lyrically. Pretty Hate Machine, The Downward Spiral, The Fragile, and With Teeth are their best albums but certainly don't sleep on the rest of them. I wish more people truly listened and understood how great NIN still is but that's ok. I do and I still see them every time they come around and it's worth every penny and then some

The live version Trent did when he was older is still my favorite. When he gets to the lyric "I am still right here", a fan in the crowd yells out YEAH YOU ARE! And the crowd cheers knowing what Trent went through with his addiction. Super powerful performance. I love Johnny Cash, but I don't give his version as much credit as people on youtube do since they came in on the end of his career. He has a ton of songs that tell you the story of his life, Hurt just happened to be the last one that came out before he his wife passed. Rest in peace always to Johnny.

Trent Reznor {aka NIN) is a musical genius. Starting with the album Pretty Hate Machine, Downward Spiral, and moving forward into the many movie soundtracks he has done. Definitely an artist worth exploring further. It was a satisfying experience having my step-father show me Johnny Cash's version of Hurt (which I had heard before, but I indulged him anyway) and listen to him go on about how my generation's artists could never write music like that. Then to say, "Now do you want to hear the original?" and then play the NIN version...lol.
