This song definitely stands on its own as a good song, but in order to really get why it's so amazing (and to really get why everyone in the crowd is so into it), you have to hear it in the context of the entire Downward Spiral album. It's a concept album.
EDIT: And by the way, there's a reason this album is a QUADRUPEL platinum album. It's amazing, and truly an incredibly major piece of American culture. It would be well worth your time to listen to the album, or even react to the album. It's almost like classical literature-it has had such a profound influence on music and culture since its release that it truly is a work of art that everyone should take in at some point in their lives. It's just that important of an album.

The emotion, the sounds, the lights, the overall vibe, it was unlike anything I've ever experienced. I felt like I was floating in the dark and at the end he turned on the bright lights and you could see everything in the room and it brings you back and ur like "holy fuck.... The original live video performance from the O.G. Downward Spiral tour (which was their video on MTV for the song) is even more mind blowing than this was. It's use of projected film on semi transparent screen & the raw reactions from the crowd to a relatively new song are astounding.
Also - his original performance audio captured the lyrics more clearly , as it's become more purely expressive (inaudible whispers) thru the years. This is a good thing - as his confidence the audience knows the lyrics is so high, he basically disappears into the song & let's it's quieting tones take over, almost completely.

  • @ChrisHendrickson82

If you ever get a chance to see NIN live you simply have to go! He usually closes with this song and the experience is something else entirely. Make it a bucket list item, you won't be disappointed.

The lead singer said that after hearing Johnny Cash's version of Hurt it wasn't his song anymore.

You obviously need to react to Johnny Cash's version.
It was one of the last songs that he had recorded before he died.
His wife had died not long before, so it kind of gave a bit of a new meaning to the song.
And the emotion in the video is so deep that it is considered by many to be one of the best music videos ever made.
