A testament to the unbelievable talent and mastery. Born out of a time when you still had to be able to actually perform on stage day in day out and not just in studio.
The lead vocals look lip-synched to me. The vocal oomph you here is not delivered on his face at all.

Eric Burden is one of the most underrated british vocalist ever to come from these isles, The Animals along with The Spencer Davis Group, The Yardbirds & The Small Faces are responsible for some of the greatest british music of all time.
I too love all those British Groups. I also loved Peter and Gordon, two college looking British. Peter Asher's sister was dating Paul McCartney. I believe. I still like those songs lost in the rocks of time. And I can still hear them in my rock n roll brain. lol

My late wife's all time favourite record. Eric Burdon's amazing vocal performances are legendary. He re-recorded this song in, I think, 2009 and it is even better. He's 81 and still performing.

The House of The Rising Sun is a gambling den/brothel. The House is the manifestation of his addiction to his vices. It's his "ball-and-chain", his true mistress. He, like his father before him, is hopelessly addicted to it's thrills, pleasures, and debauchery. The song is basically about him coming to terms with this fact.
The ball and chain is probably a literal one, he's become a bad person and is going to prison to work on a chain gang
The actual house was only around during the Civil War times. The name goes back to possible pubs in England, and French legends.

I Think he had a lifrtime of experience he was born 1941 during ww2 ,in was left of the Uk .He was from a workingclass area i Newcastle, its the same for all this groups from the 60,s they had a hard childhood

@@oraach this happens alot, Americans think bands like Led Zeppelin Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Coldplay, Fleetwood Mac, Arctic Monkeys, Pink Floyd, Gorillaz, Adele, Ed Sheeran, David Bowie, Duran Duran, The Rolling Stones, Elton John, Queen, Oasis, Amy Winehouse and loads of others are American but all are actually English. England has been a powerhouse in music over the years and still continues to put out great bands and artists.

It was filmed on film. We can rescan the film at high definition now, whereas some of the original digital stuff was filmed at whatever it was filmed at, and will forever look of that low quality.

It’s My Life…the very first record I purchased with my pocket money as a nine year old in 1965
I was also. In 64 the Beatles were still making lighter music( though still excellent) and The Animals came out with this and The Stone released Satisfaction, taking the "English invasion" in a new, grittier musical direction. Both timeless songs!
"Dimples" and "See See Rider" are my personal favorites.
This man's voice (singing) still gives me chills, so clear and controlled.
This is a super old American folk song that's been rewritten, reperformed, etc by a number of musicians over hundreds of years. The lead belly version is pretty awesome too. The American Congress Library has a whole section on classic American folk and its worth checking out.

@Eugene Boucher I'm not sure when I was first introduced to this, tbh. But I can tell you I wasn't introduced to Pink Floyd until I was around 18/19. My kids haven't actually been introduced to motown, patsy cline, Elvis, and some other "greats" simply because I've never acquired them and we don't have/listen to stations that do.
I was raised on Golden Oldies on my mom's clock-radio, John Denver on cassette, classical via vinyl from the public library. Got my own clock-radio in 5th grade so further expanded my school influences with a Top40 pop station (that included Pour Some Sugar), and a neighbor intro'd me to GNR. Moved in 7th grade and had a country station as well as a more rock station (still had pop). Aware of Metallica, Crue, etc because of kids at school but didn't actually delve in until high school.
Some folks just don't come across other genres in the normal course of their life, regardless of how plugged-in they might feel/think they are. I was introduced to jazz by an assistant manager at my first job, "world" at a retail job a few years later, and another assistant manager got me to not dislike the Beatles so much. College roomie introduced me to The Doors. A friend's crush introduced me to RATM. My husband introduced me to Tool, Cake, and Phunk Junkeez.
Music is a journey for each of us, and many of us start from different locations. I agree that it can be mind-boggling to come across somebody that hasn't heard some major hit from a major group, especially one that's been covered by a number of other artists, but it truly depends on what genres and influences they started with. And sometimes, even tho their parents enjoy it, they might not necessarily catch the vibe till they're older (like my current teenager who recently "discovered" Hendrix despite it being played around him before. He simply wasn't cognizant of it being on.)

I've heard it growing up parents playing the oldies station. But recently have I actually payed attention to it and it's an amazing song. I have more respect for mid-60s rock. I favor the heavier rock music but it's roots come from the 60s.
I think regular europeans knows much more about music than regular US-citizen. I live small contry in norther Europe called Finland and we even learn music in school. All kinds of music from classical to rock. We learn to read notes, sing and play different instruments. It´s all basic knowledge. It is different thing what each other likes or dislikes. I started to listen metal when i was eight years old, but i do know alot of other categories as well and it´s not the only genre i like to listen. I also play guitar so i like to listen different types of guitar music and it doesn´t matter is it western, rock, heavy, country, classic or witch era it comes from. All that matter is how it sounds in my ears. Do i like it or not.
Also we have awsome varieties of radiostations that play all kinds of music. Soundtracks are also very interesting. Forrest Gump had great 60´s and 70´s songs, both Blues Brothers movies had great blues, Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey is more focused to metal just like Last Action Hero.
I realy understand if someone does not know Dimmu Borgir or any other black metal band (still shame on those😄), but that you don´t House of the rising sun. Wtf man?! It´s a f*cking classic. Everyone should be able to identify this song right away...
Imagine having to play when the record light comes on, no cut, no copy, no paste, no delete and worst of all having to sing close to pitch without a computer to correct every syllable. Must have been terrifying! Or talent, ability and practice.
This wasn’t live. It’s lip syncing to a recording of the song
Imagine also recording on a limited number of tracks so if one person messed up the band had to go back and do it all over again because the entire thing had to be recorded again. There was no way to isolate that one person or instrument that made the mistake and do just that one part over and then add it back into the song. Same thing when singers appeared on TV shows. They had to do their song in an extremely limited number of takes (sometimes only one) so they had to get it right the first time. Because they were not given countless "takes" in which to get it right and because they had no auto-tune or other smoke and mirrors to help them get it right, musicians had to practice and practice and practice and practice until they were able to get it right the first time around. All that practicing is why they got so darned good! Bobby Hatfield's performance of "Unchained Melody" is a good example of this.

I met these young men on my 16th birthday and they were so nice. They even brought me on stage and sang this song for me as it was my favorite. I will always remember their kindness.
That keyboard performance is unforgettable and famous. The song goes way back.
It's honestly such an insane song to hear a bunch of dudes in suits sing, it's been one of my favorites for many years and you can really hear the blues influence.

A stone cold classic. A simple arpeggio, stunning organ work and Eric Burdon's vocals (looks like a boxer, sounds like a fallen angel). Can't beat that. And Eric is still alive and well. They came from that time in British pop where everyone was into old-school R'n'B and authentic blues that gave the world some of the finest musicians to have ever lived. Glad you enjoyed it mate.
Nobody expected the voice out of that young man, but, oh, boy! He's 80 and may be still singing today. Eric Burdon, one of my favorites as a teenager. The keyboardist is fantastic. And they are all babies. Check out Spill The Wine.

These young guys were all in their early 20’s. Eric Burdon himself was 23 years old. He’s had a great voice his entire life, and is now 80 years old. Still singing. One of my favorites since I was 20 years old. Since I’m now 78, that’s a long time! 😉

When he speaks about going back to New Orleans “to wear that ball and chain”, it has nothing to do with marriage and everything to do with following in his father’s footsteps.
The House of the Rising Son is a brothel. His mother was love, sewed his new blue jeans. His father was dissipation, a gambling man. He chose both, wearing that ball and chain. It’s an old song, from the late 1930s Depression era.

It's actually much, much older than that. The song has been altered over the centuries but it traces back from a French folk song from the 1700's.

I once read that this place was an oriental brothel and opium den . People would come for the whores , get hooked on opium and up in a complete ruin , staying there until they died. Of interest is that this same thing was occurring in China and it was ruining parts of the country so badly that the Chinese government was trying to close them down . The opium was being brought there by the Sassoon family which was a branch of the Rothschilds , and they owned the opium fields in Afganistan at the time. Several nations grouped together to fight the Chinese and force them to allow the flow of opium into the country . The conflict was called the Boxer Rebellion . This was open proof that the heads of all those countries were in the pocket of the Rothschilds.

This is one of music history's "epic" songs. Much like Bohemian Rhapsody, Space Oddity, and Stairway to Heaven, it is just one of those songs that everyone knows in the back of their mind.
This song just still sends chills. Even better for their solid, buttoned-down delivery.
Great era for music - they let the song tell the story, not on- stage antics.

One of the most iconic melodies ever !!!! These guys killed it vocally, and as musicians !!!
I saw Then Animals [w/Eric on vocal] at a theatre in Woolwich, London, in 1964...just after it was released for sale. How LUCKY I was!! What a band...what a song!! On the same show was The Nashville Teens [Tobacco Road], Carl Perkins all his rockabilly hits...Gene Vincent [touring the UK] and Chuck Berry. Little Richard was in the audience [managed to speak with him...at the side of the stage...Carl was on stage...watched Chuck "warming up" before taking the stage...what a night that was!! Now, 60 years on...I am 85...NEVER forgotten that night...I've seen some fantastic 'rock' shows in my time...THAT night was the greatest!! Eric Burdon had a fantastic voice...Alan Price, a terrific key-board player...went on in later years to have a TV series with Georgie Fame ['Price and Fame...I think it was called...Georgie was also an amazing performer]. Thank you so much for reminding me of such a terrific group...I'm so glad that, at last you have had such a rewarding experience!! [John...in Australia, ex "London Boy"! :)
I 4got to mention that the lead singer, Eric Burdon suffered asthma throughout his life! and yet has an the most AWESOME voice! it's a shame he never got the credit that he truly deserved and is underappreciated! :(

I don't agree. He was considered one of the greatest voices of the British Invasion. Maybe younger people don't know his voice but I'm over 20 years younger than him and would recognize that howly bluesy awesomeness anywhere.

Dolly Parton sings the woman's version of this. Her vocals are amazing, but as a whole that version suffers from being produced in the 1980's (has a bit of lingering disco sound).

My mother sang a version of this song to me, when I was a child, some time in the 1950's (I was born in 1945; I'm 76 now.) The song was very old, then; when I heard the Animals sing it, it was 1966. I was home on leave from the USMC, heard it in Macon, Georgia. In that time and place, the Animals were singing lead-in for Herman's Hermits, and the audience basically ignored the Animals and chattered all through it. Pissed off both me AND the Animals. When the song finished, the Animals' lead singer threw the microphone into the audience, he was so angry.
The House of the Rising Sun was a brothel in New Orleans, during the 1800's. Young men were ruined there by sexually transmitted diseases To wear a ball and chain was NOT to get married, that is a much later metaphor. The person singing the song has been convicted of a crime, road gangs wore a ball and chain.

It's a very classic folk song. Its roots likely go back to English folk songs and a version we'd likely recognize was first recorded in the 1930s in Appalachia. Fun fact, the Animals probably were inspired by the Bob Dylan version which got a lot of acclaim and Dylan basically copied it from one of his friends, Dave Van Ronk. Polyphonic does a very good video on it which is more extensive

This genre is called British Blues, or British Rhythm and Blues, introduced in the late 30s/40s primarily by African American soldiers in Britain, focusing on Chicago Electric Blues. It took off in the 50s and reached it's height in the 60s. Quite a few legendary bands got their start in British Blues like Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, The Who, The Rolling Stones, etc. The Beatles did some songs in the genre as well. With a lineup like that, you can easily see how it became one of the foundations for heavy metal and pretty much everything else we think of as rock today.

The song itself has been recorded as both a folk song and a blues song quite a few times before them, and quite a few times after. If you want to know how confusing it is, the original title of the first recording of it was The Rising Sun Blues, but it was a folk song.

This is probably the oldest secular song in America. It dates back to colonial America when New Orleans was still under the French Flag. Initially, it was written from the perspective of a prostitute in the house of ill repute. In those days, those houses had prostitution, gambling, alcohol, and drugs. Those houses were where you could get any vice you wanted, if you had money. When he talks about going back to the House, he is giving in to that lifestyle and acknowledges he will die living that way like his father.
In 1964, the Animals were on a crazy touring schedule. When they recorded this song, they had taken a red eye flight from UK. (This is actually a lip synced video for a movie. The story I’m telling here is the original studio recording that was used for the records and this video.) They got to the studio straight from the airport. They recorded this on the first try, then were immediately back in the car to go on to another gig, hopefully catching a few minutes of sleep. One of the big factors in the break up of The Animals is that they were completely overbooked for performances, which had lots of sleep deprivation and stress. Half the guys coped by drinking, the others by doing drugs, so there was also a lot of infighting. And to that the overbearing personalities of Eric Burdon (lead Singer) and Alan Parsons (band founder) in constant conflict, and the band quickly imploded even though they were incredibly successful.

I don't know about the "oldest secular song", but I agree that this song was originally written from a woman's point of view, as someone who felt trapped in the the house. While the Animals did a great cover, the few women artists who recorded this song also did a great job.

House of the Rising Sun was an anthem for the soldiers in Viet Nam. It was applicable to the ruin and futility of the circumstances they found themselves in. I remember the older brothers of my friends being drafted, the fear of having a low number, the news we watched every night with the death tolls, images of fear and chaos, talk of those who had gone underground or fled to Canada, and the protests. I saw the rich, slick, and connected, buy and maneuver their sons out of the draft. House of the Rising Sun was a raw, soulful lament. The poor and powerless sacrificed to enrich and empower the already rich and powerful: Nothing new there.

@@carmencruz8731 that’s not actually how it went. Eric Burdon was only 23 in 1964 when it was recorded. Yes they did record it in one take which took about 15 minutes. They had played it before but the Animals hadn’t been together that long, so they themselves hadn’t played it for years before.

watched a documentary recently about the history of the song - it's very old, began as a poem centuries ago. Some think the House was a brothel and a literal place, others say it's a prison. Kind of the same when you think about it. I was 11 yrs old when this hit the charts! Loved it then, love it still!

Jesus Christ. I have never seen this music video/performance, and not ever known how the members of the band look. My love of this song stems from my Grandmother ripping it (along with many other great tracks) on a early record player built into a very heavy dresser type unit. Solid wood, and the bass sounded beautiful. Analogue on my death bead. I swear!

Huge fan of Eric Burden. He actually just released a new single a few years ago; he is still amazing. He and The Animals are the real deal; and definitely worth a good listen. There would be one I would suggest because it was also sung by Tina Turner called River Deep Mountain High. While Tina has a great version; Eric's is even better IMO. I would love to have seen Tina and Eric do the song as a duet; I bet it would have been amazing! (He also recorded a song with War called Spill the Wine.)
If you like "Spill The Wine", you really should Listen to their first two Albums. Burdon was the lead singer for the band billed as Eric Burdon And War. Personally, I like his stuff with War better than his stuff with The Animals.
Spill the wine, came out after I returned from Vietnam and the world was my oyster as a newly free man in a world changed while I was otherwise occupied in a foreign land.

My dad's friends with Eric (singer). I believe this is a cover (not sure from who). My dad told me the British bands were fans of the blues, even the first Rolling Stones songs were blues covers. This song haunted me even when I was a young kid and I absolutely love it, too. Yeah, Eric's voice is stellar.

One of The Animals later but less well known songs was San Franciscan Nights. Well worth a listen. And ,thats Alan Price playing the Vox Continental organ. Ray Manzarek played the same model on most of The Doors songs.
