It shocks me that folks don’t know about one of the greatest songs of all time. Cash of course was great but nobody has the raw soul of depression and despair in there voice like Trent. He still gets me through my days
I don’t know about that man there’s something a lot different about being a young person person having time to change. From Johnny Cash’s perspective, it hits completely different and is quite a bit more tragic.
@@Therealchrist The whole track is a masterpiece, but that huge fucking ending where it sounds like an atom bomb dropping is the closer everyone needs to hear. No pun intended.
This was my theme song for a few bad years ... this, and Every Day Is Exactly the Same. Trent is just a genius, and his music got me through some very tough times.
whit all due respect to sr. cash, but i never understand how most people seems to prefer his version, mean i get it, but trent version is so raw and pure...is like cash version is the "easy listening" side of the song in a way, not a bad way, just different, to me trent version is always a lot better
Agreed on all fronts. It’s like sunset vs midnight. Pain in both, one with regret and one with despair. I like both but I like the original so much more.
Trent sang this from his soul, his heart, this was a calling for him. To say that a cover from another artist is better is mind boggling. Trent's version is as pure as it comes.
Thank God someone told you this was a NIN song. Drives me crazy when people think it's a Johnny Cash song. Even worse, when people assume Trent covered Johnny's song. Nooooo.😂
No lie, I've been waiting so long for someone to react to the unplugged version. I heard it like 10 years ago on yt and feel like it's the best version, with the original coming in close second, and Johnny's version being something all it's own. Respect for all versions on their own right. Just a powerful set of lyrics.
So back when pretty hate machine first came out Trent reznor did a small paper interview where they asked him who his influences were At the time he answered Devo and Johnny Cash It's crazy that both of those bands have covered a nine inch nails song Johnny Cash did hurt of course and Devo covered head like a hole What tremendous validation to have the people that you grew up idolizing cover your music Reznor is a legend not even getting into the amount of awards he's won since he's gone into composition
Johnny Cash's version was a cover and it was beautiful and he made it about his life. Trent rezner's version was about a completely different subject, and it was the last song in a story which is the download spiral. There really is no comparing the two. One of the most beautiful songs ever written from one of the most amazing albums ever made
Yes Johnny did a good job but I really can't understand how anyone could claim his version is better. This is Trent at his most raw. Heroin is a hell of a drug. The sound, the feel, even his voice sums it up entirely... It's almost a case of 'you have to have been there'. Clean for 15 years now and Trent is actually the reason why. :)
This is the first time I've heard Trent sing Johnny's lyric change. Both versions are fantastic, but the original version always reads to be as more anguished, while the cover reads as more regretful. Both distinct kinds of hurt to express though masterful songwriting and arrangement.
This was one of my favorite NIN songs. I’m surprised you hadn’t heard this one since you were a fan of theirs in the 90s. It was such a haunting ending to The Downward Spiral. You could tell Trent was facing his demons, his addiction, and his regrets in such a vulnerable way. The Johnny Cash version was much more tragic because he was looking back on his life and his career in his final days. So there was more weight to the pain, since he knew there were no more chapters of his life to write. No more opportunities for redemption. Despite all of his success, all he was left with was the pain and regret 😿 It impacted Trent when he heard it. It’s interesting that Trent used the “crown of thorns” lyric from Johnny Cash’s version rather than “crown of sh*t” from the original in this acoustic performance.
I’m glad you are expanding your musical horizon. as you get older, taste of music will become more diverse. There’s so much treasure out there to discover. Sometimes the same song you love takes on a completely different meaning after several years.
Dude, I'm so glad you did this. If you are going to cover Cash s version you are right to pay homage to the original. Hauntingly beautiful. One of the greatest songs about pain ever made.
I never heard the unplugged version….wow. This is my favorite NIN (long before Cash covered it). I never picked up the album but it looks like I’m going to have to, since I learned just recently that it’s a concept album.
I've noticed one of the biggest differences between Johnny and Trent version of HURT is that Johnny Cash's video really captures you more so with the visuals. If you were to listen to both with eyes closed they are equally powerful and captivating allowing you the listener to hear each of their personal HURT reflected in their singing.
NIN! This was one of my favorites too! Everything Trent did was amazing. He's an amazing song writer! Trying to picture you hearing like "Downward Spiral" and being like "This! This is what I want to do! Dude writes lyrics saying he wants to f*** someone like an animal and everyone is listening to it!" Lol! Just joking but you get what I mean🤣
You should check out Trent’s song “right where it belongs” off of Nine inch nails album “with teeth” it holds so much truth about humanity even in todays world!
hell yeah! NIN is amazing. you should do more songs off The Downward Spiral album- it's the perfect representation of the descent into madness of depression/drugs/suicidality. this LP holds a special place in my heart
Check out “ chris kläfford imagine “ he is from Sweden and he is soooo great at singing, you have never heard someone doing imagine better then him! Take care❤
He seemed to not be so angry as his original album recording. He was younger and anyone who heard iit will know, he was mad on that album. Cash's was so retrospective. And I felt that to be the craziest part . Because trem Reznor didn't and shouldn't have come across that way as he was young
And man...they even have songs with David Bowie! I also love Bowie and "I'm Afraid of Americans" is one of those songs that are unfortunately, how I feel sometimes when I get to know horrible things about what happens in the u.s. ... From wars to school shootings, cults to basic care and rights... It frightens me because western countries seem to follow! Don't get me wrong, please... It's not about individuals, it's about politics.
I have to say, while I do love Johnny Cash's version, and I couldn't argue that it's not the better version, I always, always miss that dissonant note in the verse (the sharp 4/flat 5). That note just crunches at your soul. I understand why they got rid of it for Johnny, but... damn does it make the song.
@@CliffBeatsOfficial Hey Brother, have you heard and seen 'Hurt' by Johnny Cash? This is the best veraion and performance of this song..
Yes, Ive heard them all..
You gotta check out the studio/album version in headphones. It’s sound design at its finest.
100% this. The album version features so many details this one doesn't, and is significantly more sinister.

Masterpiece is the right word. Downward spiral is a masterpiece.
Thank you so much for doing this version!! It shows the level of talent that Trent has just him and a piano pouring out his soul 🔥
I didn't know there was an unplugged version of Trent singing it, thanks for doing a react on it.
Look up "The Quiet Session" theres 4 or 5 acoustic gems there from NIN.

I believe it's because Trent said that the song was Johnny's after Cash covered it. So its a wonderful acknowledgement and tribute.

Trent did heroin with Bowie in the 90's around the time of the downward spiral, hurt was written towards the end of that addiction if I remember right
Trent Reznor wrote this. Johnny Cash's version is the cover. The original studio version is very different & (as you said of Cash's) more complete.
