The younger man looked like he listened to the message and sympathized with it. The older man empathized with this, he seems like he knows EXACTLY what Cash is talking about.
He does, song is 100% about reflecting on the regrets of your life and the things you did that you knew would end up hurting you or the people around you but you did them anyway and looking back and living in the regret of those things. This is the life of a masochist, someone that can't help but do things that hurt themselves and almost subconciously do them intentionally because all they know is living in the shit pile of regret and self hate they have. That's real shit.
He has been through some stuff, the older gentleman.. to me that is a song of a husband and father's regrets...and I believe as a husband and a father we all have those feelings to some extent! But cash made that song his own!

I will be 50 in November. Seen NIN twice in the 90s. But damn man this will never be beat. Only one that comes close is SRV and Vodoo Child.
The elder gentleman understands the song better than most reactors. It's about the fact that the older you get the more you regret your bad decisions and actions from the past. "Prioritizing good deeds and kindness should be a lifelong endeavor." Sadly, that is not the world we live in. Thank you for this. Very touching.
it gets more and more difficult these days with doing good and being kind. No one seems to want it. So you end up giving it to animals who reflect it back, or sitting quietly watching the world destroy itself.
He also hit me with regret that everyone goes away when you're old. It made me think about my Mom now that Dad is gone and if we're not spending enough time with her. Life happens and your SO and children become your own family and own your priorities.
We can't forget our past or shut the door on it. From our mess comes our message. From hopelessness come hope. If we are armed with the facts about ourselves we can help someone else. Before that can happen, we need to be honest with ourselves. Be authentic, do the hard work and accept the results. If you can do that you will avoid all the misery that gives you these regrets. You can always start over, but you need to accept the past and present to see a better tomorrow.

As an old man myself, I still tear up when I hear Johnny's version. Life is just a journey towards death. Spot on reaction!
Think about His life. He sang that song shortly after his wife died. He's been watching all his friends and family die, one by one, all things familiar grow strange, all his friends pass away... Johnny Cash was all alone when he sang this song. He had no one else, and this song was his last message to the next generation who is already growing old. Weight and substance means more than we know. So much more than we know, but those of us who live on will learn how much it means.
This song and the last post, both go through my shell like a scalpel.
Even as a young man I can't keep from tearing up.

The fact that the older man understood the message of the song on a single listen is astounding, it clearly resonated with him on a personal level. I love seeing these reactions across cultures.
When you are 'old' you understand! If you understand as a youth then you are wise.

If there is one thing we have learned in a post covid world is that which unites us is infinitely greater than that which separates us.

This is real art, in my opinion. The one that transcends culture and time. As the man in the video said, this song will continue to resonate with generations to come. All truly great art possesses this trait of transcendence of earthly boundaries
This video exemplifies why such cross-cultural reaction videos are an important bridge. Here two people with different culture, language and traditions respond with complete human empathy and can identify completely with the feelings and experience that are expressed in this song. If this doesn't help all of us understand each other, that we are all the same inside, only different in a few exterior trappings, then I don't what can.

I honestly don’t know which was more fulfilling…listening to Johnny sing this again (not the first time I’ve listened to it), or hearing the elder man understand it, completely and with no difficulty, from half a world away from Johnny’s, and from a completely different cultural perspective. The emotional impact that it had on the two of them was both boldly honest, and palpable.
I’ve watched literally dozens of reaction videos to this song. This one is easily the best I’ve seen. I can only hope that someone might express to these two men that their efforts here are both appreciated and respected.
Johnny’s wife June Carter Cash was in the video with him. She died 3 months (May 2003) after filming the video. She was the love of his life. Johnny followed her only 4 months later in September 2003. His cause of death is listed as complications from diabetes, but I truly believe he died of a broken heart.
I’d have to agree with you. My mother passed in 2021 and my grandfather passed just 3 months later, officially from complications of covid along with his numerous other health issues, but the whole family knows it was the loss of my mother that pushed him over the edge. He was devastated at losing his youngest daughter and baby and his heart just couldn’t take it.
I agree and when she passed, I knew he would follow soon after.
My grandfather passed 6 months after my grandmother he had dementia and spent alot of that time asking where she was.
He absolutely grieved himself to death. But I don't think he would have wanted it any other way ❤

Hurt is such an amazing song. Written by Trent Reznor in his late 20s and yet so fitting for Johnny as he faced the end of his life.

I read somewhere that he was angry his song was covered without his permission. But then he listened to Cash’s version and was so moved he proclaimed the song to belong to Cash. He redid the song better than the original.
i highly doubt that, every cover has to be authorized in the music industry, and Cash would've never published the song without that. the wikipedia page for the song has a long quote from Reznor about that @@kroakie4
They both interpret the song wonderfully but the elder of the two is quite profound in his understanding & heart behind the song certainly a voice of experience .
These types of reaction videos are so underrated. It shows how much one can learn from other cultures, particularly when they are discussing culturally significant things from one's own part of the world. Westerners (like me) rarely, if ever, have the chance to be exposed to these kinds of experiences, perspectives, and wisdom. This video is a perfect example of the value of such a thing.

Johnny lived a life full of pain and blessings. He had so much love in His life but in the end it was all lost to the frailties of life. The music grabs you emotionally too!

@@cliffordbowman6777 I'd look in the mirror before assigning arrogance too quickly. I've lost my family twice and my journeys not over. Johnny's life was filled with joy and misery, and like most of us from his own action. Knowing the richness of Johnny's life and some of the depths of his pain, I wouldn't trade my own miseries to have had his life. Upon reflection, I can admire his accomplishments, but understand his journeys pain after my own disappointments. Even the author of this song appreciated the feeling and expression Johnny put into this song. Few can truly understand the depths of pain until they've lived it. The comforts of our lives bounty is nothing without having those we loved around us to enjoy it also.
In this hardened world, people we loved walk away from our lives too easily or are taken away by their death. Our only choice is to start over.

The most impressive for me was their faces as the song went on. The pain in the young’s man face, and the sadness on the old’s one. We could turn of the volume and still describe their emotions. So intense.

Don't trivialize the weight and impact of this by calling it a cover. Tge importance is too big for that.

If Trent Reznor ever doubted his ability as a songwriter, this surely erases all doubt. Yes. Johnny Cash is an American Legend, but he totally had the perfect song for his goodbye. A song that gives me goosebumps whenever I hear it, and a song that transcends the original intent to people around the world. Trent should be forever emboldened to keep writing, and just know that he has gift to connect with people as human beings.

Agreed. I'm 40, just 10 years ago this song didn't resonate with me as it does now. I still loved it, but listening to it now opens a floodgate of emotions. And can see it becoming even more powerful as I keep getting older.

This Hurt Cover is done amazingly by Johnny Cash. An icon with a voice like that, singing such a sorrowful song was memorizing. Original is done well too. But this, listening to their interpretation of this video and Johnny. That is brilliant.
I truly believe Johnny Cash would be very moved by this reaction and commentary. Uncle is a very wise man and Naveed (?) is a very thoughtful and discerning young man.
Facts
I've never heard someone describe and summarize Johnny's singing so perfectly, these guys know their stuff for never having heard him before.
He would keep himself, he would find a way. Johnny Cash won everything in life, but he lost himself. We deeply feel the agony of his regret, and it is a blessing in the lesson it teaches us. We must really think hard about what we prioritize in life’s journey. Also: I am Armenian American diaspora, the inflection and desire to be understood and heard in your voice and the similar words to Armenian that I noticed made me think of my elders discussing sacred matters of humanity. Thank you for this. Your wisdom and experience shine through in your thoughts about the song, the honesty you have to call the main topic of the song “regret” makes you much like Johnny Cash -brave. It is hard to be so honest and in touch with the truth of such a thing. I know I will take this lesson, to “keep myself” even if it means a less successful looking life, all the way to my final days. Seeing a wise elder willing to look at pain and regret with clear vision, despite how hard it is to do so, will help strengthen me in my goal to prioritize the right things and not lose myself. The Nine Inch Nails version is also amazing, but it's about completely different matters... More from a young person's point of view. But both will break your heart just the same.
lol spot on... as a recovering addict i feel that Nine Inch Nails version is within the depths of addiction and despair, (takes me back there everytime) and the Cash version is the finally sober person looking back at all of the mess and destruction with a sad shake of the head... both are very beautiful songs

I cried a freaking lot the first time I heard Hurt when it was released. I think I've cried even more watching it now and listening to these wise people, specially the elder man. He speaks words of wisdom, indeed 😢
When Johnny closed the cover to the piano 🎹🎶, that was his way of *saying goodbye.* I believe that this was the last video and song that he performed before he passed away. In case the guys don't know, the lady standing on the stairs watching Johnny was his wife June. Johnny passed away Sept. 12, 2003... His wife June passed away May 15, 2003. Johnny passed away 4 months after June did.😢

She knew his health was failing which is why her look in the video was so solid and heart-felt. That she passed before him is arguably tragic and a relief. Watching the one you love deteriorate and die before your eyes is among the worst things someone can experience.

Johnny closing the lid to the piano is exactly the way he closes a coffin on someone he loves.

There’s a story that goes June was not meant to be in the video. She was standing on the prop staircase, off camera, observing Johnny do his thing. One of the crew noticed the emotion on her face and in her eyes while she watched her once-vital, now feeble husband do what he loves, and turned one of the cameras on her. She was unaware she was being filmed, and the expression on her face is pure and without pretense. I hope my wife looks at me like that in my eighties.
So glad you had an elder person watching with a younger person. Just elders or just younger people alone wouldn’t give so complete a commentary as having both together.

Wow, the song is powerful all by itself but the two men's reactions were just as powerful! The younger one sees it as a future analogy but the older one sees it and feels every word. Very moving. ❤❤❤

Trent really doesn't get enough credit for writting this song. Both deserve respects for this song, as you have done. In my eyes, it's one of the most powerful songs. I can't think of another song that resonates at such a level.

I always liked the original version but this version gets to me every time I hear it. His voice just resonates with a lifetime of ups and downs, failures and successes. This was him singing a song wrote by another, but it fit his life so much... And he passed away so shortly after he made this video, this was his farewell and reminder to us all.
I've seen another reaction video where the reactor just wanted to hug his family after listening to this song as performed by the late Johnny Cash.

This song shows so plainly that all people share more than they know. When Trent Reznor wrote and recorded it it held meaning to him and his fans. When Cash covered it. It held meaning to him and a whole new group of people. And these folks who are from a whole different culture feel it and find meaning. It's beautiful

This amazing rendition of "Hurt" is a refection of a old man's life, but the song was written by a young man. Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails wrote this about something totally different sometime in his 20's. It's truly a totally different song when done by Nine Inch Nails. Same song, different perspective.
They both battled addiction.

Johnny's is a completely different perspective, an old man at the end of his life who went through that same battle, and looking back on all of the things he did to those he loved with regret.

The first time I heard Johnny Cash singing this song on the radio I was driving down a major interstate highway. My eyes started to well up with tears and I had to pull over and park in for a couple minutes in the emergency lane to get myself together. It still sometimes has the same effect on my. R.I.P Johnny.

The elder man really does understand what Johnny Cash was singing about! Life is vibrant when you are young, but with age, those things simply fade....what you are left with is memories of what used to be...but it takes on a deeper meaning! I really appreciate the wisdom in these tribal people!!! Sure makes sense as I still try to understand my aging myself. Really liked this!
At 40 years old I’ve found one positive to the internet and social media era. People from all cultures and corners of the world can come together and share… that’s incredible.
Trent released this song when he was 29. This video really expresses the genius of his writing. Trent's genius is matched by Johnny's soul poured into his performance. Even Trent recognized and adored this version of his song. Two great artists came together to this is the result. I do wish though, that these men were aware of the whole story behind this performance because their honesty and genuine thoughtfulness is so very clear. I'd love to hear more of their thoughts.
Johnny Cash is an American icon who breaks the barriers between music genres. Everyone knows Cash. He helped many musicians get their start. I grew up with his music. My father and he had the same job in the military. And he looks a lot like my dad in younger years. Dad will be 92 in 2 months. And hearing this reminds me of him and his life.

Greatest cover I ever heard. It's for all of our lives. When you start getting older and you think about people you clashed with or loved and they went before you did. Things that you wished you said or didn't say. Just pure mortality. It sucks....but it is the rollercoaster.
This was Cash’s last song, such a beautiful song, and end to his life, he was an amazing musician
Johnny Cash lived a life that many people know. He struggled with addiction at points, which strained many of his relationships and drove people away from him. His songs have that familiar bravado because he sings from the heart about his experiences, rather than a fantastic spectacle.
Like many idols of older generations, he struggled. He struggled desperately. And his talent saw him through. So in his late life, he spent a significant amount of time trying to repent and repair his relationships.
If he only knew something about the man who wrote that song, and the man who helped Johnny to sing it. And everything that happened in between 💜

Both of these men had such beautiful ways of expressing how the song made them feel. They were each saying exactly my own feelings for which I couldn't seem to string together a coherent sentence to explain. I love when someone describes something in a way that is exactly perfect for whatever they're describing while simultaneously being something I would never have thought on my own.
