  • Hurley Haywood drove this Can-Am beast just before the advent of the Sunoco 917/30 (he still drove it after the 917/30 came out), has 1100 hp from a 5.4L Flat 12 with twin turbos. This is chassis 917/10-007.

Looking at the tremendously complicated plumbing and tight packaging of this motor takes me back in time. During 1973's Laguna Seca Can-Am, Mark Donohue's Sunoco Porsche 917/30K did not finish the first heat when a cam cover cracked and created a very smoky oil leak. The motor itself was not broken, but accessing the failed cover could not be done with the engine still installed in the car. The team briefly considered using their backup car (#7) in the transporter but SCCA rules prohibited its use as a last minute substitute. Roger Penske's team was forced to attempt an engine change in Laguna Seca's open paddock. Back at their home shop this complicated job was expected to take almost a full work day, but under the gun they finished the job in about half the time. Penske himself worked with the crew, a true all hands on deck operation! With only a few minutes to spare, Donohue's car was rolled to the main event's starting grid. Starting from the back, he rapidly sliced through the field, taking the win and the 1973 Can-Am championship. It was a very convincing display of teamwork and professionalism.

@cbkspa you can see the turbos near the exhaust...

@cbkspa well, it was a good use of an hour and watching them figure out that the reason it wouldn't start was it was on a small incline... once they moved it, it started up pretty easily lol

@alexander1485 Was'nt the 1971 917/10 a normaly aspirated 5.4 driven by Jo Siffert in the Can Am series?

Yes, Siffert's 1971 STP Porsche 917/10 was naturally aspirated. The factory added a "K" suffix (for kompressor) to denote a turbocharged engine.

@alexander1485 Nothing hard about that at all. Just saying, its a 1972. Not a 1971. Whats so hard about that ?
