- The #1 Fall food plot blend that you can plant, will provide what the deer are missing and need, compared to every other feeding per day. Corn, beans, acorns and wood browse are the varieties of non food plot forage that deer can be counted on to feed on during their 2 daylight bedding hour feedings and during their 2 nighttime feedings. Well, its here. Opening day here in ky. Just had to have a cup of coffee and watch another one of your videos. Getting ready to shoot my bow a few times and get ready to head to the stand. I have the perfect wind for the stand that i want to hunt but the buck that i have been watching just disappeared. Hopefully he will show up. Good luck to all the ky hunters.

Thanks Jeff. Just top coated with rye again last night and went and pulled cards off the mock scrapes. No huge bucks yet, which is fine, and also what I expected at this point in the year. But i can't believe the activity at them. Just like you've said many times, every deer that walks by rubs their orbital glands on the vine. It's really cool to get pics and videos exactly like the ones we all see in your videos. This method is proven. Now if we can just get a monster there come October. Lol thanks again. Great video

Just put in two plots at my hunting location. Limed last week, added one strip of white clover for early season, then put strips of sugar beets, rape, radish, and turnip. First year ever to be serious about planting food plots. Thanks for the information. My area is surrounded by soybeans and corn with some sparse woodlots. I know when beans get harvested, acorns disappear, and heavy frosts hit, that hopefully these plots will be the ticket to keeping them close. I have some giants around this year on trail cam.
Excellent points on food plots. I have a suggestion Jeff. How about a video on how cleared travel corridors are vital to deer movements. Understanding how not only humans but animals will take the path of least resistance. It has been my experience that cleared travel corridors, especially for spring and summer when bucks are in velvet, that link food plots (woody browse and regeneration to maintained food plots) are essential. What I also do is cut access points, large enough for a deer to pass, from cover to open fields in that transition area. Cutting the canopy to assist in woody browse and regeneration is also essential. One other thing I’ve found useful is to mow patches in the CRP in early fall and the mow travel corridors to assist in deer movement. I really enjoy your videos!
Hi Jeff. We planted the mix three weeks ago that you suggested for this year. Just wanted to let you know our plots this year look the best they have ever looked by a long ways. Hey Jeff, I have many food plots on a few properties and tried your no till approach cuz that's all the craze these day I had many different approaches to this:
Plot 1- half acre sprayed and killed after long summer without mowing or anything it is in "poorer" soil so when I say it had hip hi weeds It did but they were very sparse it was mostly dirt. Plot was broadcast then cultipacked in. This is one of two plots with irrigation I ran it for 3 hrs and we got ample rain 2 days after. Result germination was so-so def not what I wanted it to look like seemed thin. Also never got over 3 inches but that could be many reasons
Plot 2- half acre mowed july 4, sprayed july 22 and broadcast Aug 8. This plot was dang near BARE DIRT. Packed in plot also has irrigation watered 4 hrs and got ample rain. (Same property as plot 1) result. Germination was incredibly low compared to yr before(Tilled). I was extremely disappointed however ik it would fill in as plants grew. This is the only plot I have a hot zone fence for so I can grow as big as soil allows. It has filled in but its definitely NOT what it was last yr.
Plot 3- half acre- broadcast straight into very few weeds as buckwheat was planted in june. THEN, sprayed dried and cultipacked in plant date Aug 17 ample rain after plant. Germination was incredibly low yet again I knew this would happen and tilled strips to see a side by side comparison. As of yesterday the no till is extremely thin but higher than the strips however germination on the strips was more what I thought (near 90%)
Plot 4- 1 acre broadcast Aug 17 into weeds sprayed dried and packed this was different from plot 3 however as it was WAYYYYY overseeded over double of what's called for. Ample rain for germination Result, this is best looking plot if I fenced it would be good after ample growth. Still 1 or 2 bare spots but I cant argue.
Plot 5- just under acre buckwheat no weed or buckwheat broadcast onto dirt Aug 17 ample rain again this plot is atrocious there is NOTHING in it germ rate looks to be under 5%. Neither plot 3 or 4 or 5 make it with a buckwheat planting as deer destroy it before its 6 inches tall.Even if replanted a 2nd time. I told my brother-in-law why would I continue this no till when I can light touch the soil with a tiller or disc and get MUCH better results rather than buying a lot of seed. All plots were planted with North Woods Whitetail sweetfeast, been using it for yrs and never had issues untill "no-till" interested on your thoughts

Great content. If you haven't done a video on apple trees it might be worth while. They are a great destination for deer to stop at and even people with small property's can have them My friend has some on his farm and they hit it every day at about the same time. Sometimes I think I should just roll the dice to pick which stand I should hunt- any advice how to differentiate?

Well we don’t want to eat one thing all the time. I’ve heard the same thang on corn killing them. Some people feed alfalfa bales of hay to with corn.
I plan to use Hinge cuts 30"-48" on 3 inch bunch maples found in VA, was timbered 6 years ago. My main reason is to create a barrier from the neighbor as well to create a funnel/fence to my stands.
*40 acres 20 of it is 6yo cut off.
Is a hinge cut good for a Natural fence from poachers? if not Egyptian grass is my other thought.
I plan to plant the 20 acre field in corn , soybeans and Clover ( maybe some Milo) Sw VA soil is not that great. 1/2 acre pond i present and land is near A LOT of heavy pressure public land.

I am glad you mentioned perennial rye not being good. I think I accidentally planted that instead of annual rye one season. Not sure what the difference is, but wildlife would walk right thru it and not even put their head down.

Jeff a few weeks ago, I ask about what seed you where planting, and you told me and I ordered it. Planted it first of august. Its up about 4" or so, can I add fertilizer now, or will it hurt it. and thanks for all the videos, keep up the great work.
The owner of the very very small wooded section of the farm I hunt, harvested 160 trees out of where my stands are, about 4 months ago. Man it is so dang thick in there with poke plants, and other new growth, its impossible to walk through. I set a stand at the top of a draw about 20yards inside the timber. God willing itll be a good yr.
Jeff, awesome video. I just put 50lbs of rye on my brassica plot last weekend on some bare spots. Why do you not put rye on your brassica plots?
Just wondering, if time and expense weren't considered, would a well done "no-till" food plot be as good as a well done "tilled" food plot?

If that’s the case, what would you recommend?
Also would like to add have a small section of plot that was chicory that looked terrible that I just tilled and planted only winter rye. It looks extremely crazy green like a professional baseball field. It’s tempting to just use that!

Thanks Neil...and ALWAYS Winter rye/Fall rye/rye grain...never perennial rye grass, which is a weed in my experience. Good call and thanks for pointing that out!

Hey Jeff... not sure what to do here in SW Wisconsin. The drought we've been experiencing isn't giving me alot to work with. I have a blank canvas here, but I'm not sure where to begin if we don't get some moisture right dang quick.
Jeff, I have taken the steps to grow a plentiful plot but a drought started has been going on for a month so they are not doing to well. Starting Friday, every day for a week we have a chance of rain. Should I disk more seed in the ground, cast it on top of the ground and hope it makes its way down, or just let it be and see what happens? I was hoping to have it growing good before the corn harvest which is... now! Thanks for all your videos.
Hi Jeff, I am a ravenous consumer of your content and would like to thank you for sharing all of your knowledge with myself and others trying to improve their habitat and hunting. I do have one question for you: at 7:55 of your video you mention overseeding with winter rye on the green side of the plot and NOT on the brassicas side. In mid-August, I planted a mix of oats, peas & rye on one side of my plots and a mix of brassicas, radishes & turnips on the other side (all look amazing, by the way). I did overseed the brassicas side with rye along with the green side (at 100lbs/acre) last weekend because I plan to try your no-till buckwheat method next summer and I thought the rye would give the buckwheat some mulch after I pack it down and spray it. Just curious why it's bad to overseed the brassicas with rye? PS - I'm in SE Michigan.
Hi Jeff. Great video's. i have a plot i planted in August that isn't doing very well and would like to over seed it with winter rye. The instructions for planting is for a 1/2" to 1" seed depth. i am always confused when i see people planting these no till food plots vs what recommended seed depth is. I can run a cultipacker over it but that still won't give correct seed depth. What are your thoughts on this with your experience.

Ok so I am a senior in highschool, and am looking into going into the field of wildlife management as a career. I see the things that you, as well as growing deer tv do when it comes to visiting peoples property, and advising them on what they should do to improve it for deer hunting. That's what I want to do as a career, I want to open up a business that specializes in doing those sorts of things, and I was curious how you got started doing what you are doing. What kind of winter rye is it you plant? When I ask for winter rye they try to sale me rye grass. Is the winter rye you use what the farmers use for cover crop? Thanks. Love all your veidos keep up the good work

What do you suggest for middle Tennessee. I planted 3 acres of oats and wheat in the beans about 3 weeks ago and the dove loved them due to lack of rain. We havent had a rain since and dont have on in the forecast until late September.

I am struggling with a 3,000sqft foot plot planted brassicas and topped with rye grain and oats and they deer are just mowing it down I am not sure there will be much left come November. Is there something else I should of planted there? Has full sun and alfalfa field next to our 40 in central WI. What would you recommend?
Im kinda on the fence about what to plant in my food plots.. In northern ontario so often mid novermber is our gun season and have 6-12 inch of snow and -1 to -10c ..Everything ive done so far is basically useless. Thinking i might grow a stand of corn and leave it and maybe a patch of carrots or beets... Thoughts?

I worked until 4pm this Sunday, drove 3 hrs to my property in Clare Co just to put more rye in my 2 half acre plots along with some radish and fertilizer, then drove 3 hrs back home...look at all the rain coming this week!!!

@@jeremyjames249 that's great to hear! Oh for sure it's worth it...for about 10 years I drove 6.5 miles 1 way to spray, plant or fertilize 4 times per year. Sometimes just for 2 hours of spraying in same day. Worth it 😉

What do you recommend for small plots 1/4-1/2 acre this year I did oats plus and beets and greens all from whitetail institute and beets and greens failed from to much rain soon had to throw out no plow and deer have been hitting it all year but first frost and the little bit of brassicas I had were gone so my question is what do you recommend to plant on small plots next year I’m gonna have 2 plots one 1/4 and 1/2 acre

Jeff, if greens are the place to be for that third feeding......would you suggest being in the hard woods in the morning during early season? The reason that I ask is that I am looking to purchase a property in the southern tier of NY state, and I will need to develop a plan for setting it up for years to come. Flush cutting has been shown over and over to be a much better habitat improvement strategy than hinge cutting, though.
I need some ideas for the easement and an area just in the woods (20-30 feet in) on my property, have a compact tractor but prefer to not turn my good soils upside down to plant a deer plot to hunt over. What would be good mix for the middle of the NC - RTP area. If you need pictures of my 2-acre easement for suggestions let me know. I believe past failures might be my fault - did not lime my soil. Summer grasses look good but QDMA no till clovers did not come up well.

Hey jeff i am planning on planting white tail institute clover, chicory, oats, and a small amount of Purple top turnips from co op (just to experiment). I live in northwest lousiana. Temps are still 95 during day. Shows temps getting under 90 by sep 18th with a rain 2 days before that. Would this be a good time to plant or should i wait?

The average harvests of deer north of the Olympic mountains is in the hundreds for the past 15 years.
The average harvests for deer east of the Olympic mountains is in the thousands. So I think after seeing your video is clear as day that the greens is growing better for them on the east side but I'm still getting used to hunting. I just started.
But I do love plotting. I do love planning, and statistics.
So since I don't have 10 acres and I can just invite them on my land.
I do know they love apples and plums at this time. But that's usually on private land. I got to find a way to find the apple trees and the plum trees that are out in the wild.
I lived in Enumclaw WA for 30 years and I will tell you what I did when living in WA. Use the clear cuts that are in the area just like a food plot. That is really what it is and you did not have to do any planting. When thinking about the clear cut try to find the ones that are 2 to 3 years old. Now set up your hunting plane thing that the clear cut will be that 3rd feeding. Often you will find the patters the same of a a clear cut as you would a planted food plot. Enjoy the season. I often wish I was back there in the cool mountain air with my stick and string
Hi Jeff I had a great brassica plot and now it’s turning different colors and drying out and I can’t seem to figure out what it is I thought fungus but I sprayed fungicide and it did noting
Jeff, are there sprays that you can suggest to use that will kill the weeds only and not the food plot plants ? I am starting to establish a food plot and we are doing a grass kill to get to the dirt and using a kabota to till the plot, but want to maintain the weeds during the next few months so i can seed over the plot around mid sept with winter rye ,winter peas, and oats. I just bought 17 acres in upstate ny on the tug hill plateau. Not much around me for AG but hay fields and 4200 acres of state land. I got enough space for 2.5 acres of food plot if needed with two creeks and a beaver pond for water source and a ton of apples trees. What would you recommend I plant for a food plot? Great info Jeff, like always, in have a hard time getting the right amount of seed down for barrasicas? Either to light or to heavy? Or i leave strips open. Rather be light than to heavy. Any tricks you might have?
Hi Brian I go by feel now...which of course doesn't help. BUT, I use to weigh every plots seed out by the ounce. In an Earthway model 2750 if you go about setting 1.5 it will be too light (I believe). Too light is awesome! For example if you finish seeding and you have 1/2 hour plots seed left you can just spread at same rate. If you spread 4-5#s out of 6 you can go at angles real quick while making the spreader opening smaller. Or just call it a day. Better to be 2#s short than a pound heavy. Always undershoot...and make sure to angle the spreader to parallel the ground in hill country. Learned that the hard way 😁

@@sambilhorn9282 morning Sam! It stunts the growth and fertility starves them. I'm referring to any Brassica mix. If you add a 1/2 acre of tillage radish to a Brassica mix...you have to cut a 1/2 acre out of that Brassica mix. Hope that makes sense!

Hi Jeff, I have 80 acres in tennessee and it's surrounded by roughly 8,000 acres of woods with a blacktop running straight through the center. The edges are crop fields. What would you recommend doing?
quick questions, i was checking a camera on my small 25 acre parcel yesterday and i kicked up a nice buck who has been bedding on my property for awhile now. i get pictures of him daily during daylight and i believe he calls the surrounding area home. will he come back? what time of day should i check my camera to not disrupt him?

I have heard ya say it a few times , why don’t ya like putting rye in ur barassica plots ? I have 2 great plots of barassicas but the deer are starting to nip on them hard I’m worried they will smoke it before I get to hunt it here in Pennsylvania our season doesn’t start until October 5th, I usually don’t hunt until like Halloween week on
Great summary of the BEST SYSTEM!!! As you know we followed the plan and are hoping to attract some nice dee during season.
Still confused as to how to follow the red lines without going through our ag and food plot areas. Will probably continue to hunt only afternoons so as not to disturb the deer in the am.

Hi Bob .. definately evening until the rut for you guys! You have to go well around and thru the SW woods border to get into a few stands...along your North border to get into a few too. Not much you can do about the ag tho...kind of a bad thing with ag but not much you can do about it 🙂

So when you plant your no-till food plot blends, do you test the soil for just the buckwheat, or for the rye/peas/oats/brassica mix that you plant after you plant the buckwheat?
Hi Petter! The buckwheat and rye grow on very poor soils. Always test for what needs the most...like the oats or the peas. If you add beans or wheat or corn...the soil needs to be even better. Hope that makes sense!

I am in SW Missouri, I planted my food plot going on 3 weeks ago. We have not had any rain since I planted it. Suppose to get rain this weekend if the weather pattern holds up.
Do you think that seed will germinate now after the rain? Or should I plan on resending?
I planted clover, chicory and rye on one side of my plot and turnips and beets on the other. I did see radish sprouting about a week after planting but nothing else.
Have not been back to the property in 2 weeks but I am assuming by the lack of rain the radishes may have died.
But I will know for sure this weekend as I am going to check on the plots since we may get rain.
Man that is a tough call BUT, I would layer 200#s per acre of Rye on it and enjoy the season...I think it is too late to replant the Brassica at this point. But the rye can offer a great cure all! You can even add more rye towards early October if needed. If you want...plant 100#s per acre now and 100-200#s more in 3-4 weeks if needed. If you end up getting a catch with the previous planting the first planting of rye will help fill in. If not...the 2nd layer of rye will. Hope for the best and thank you very much!

Yeah trey, south Carolina here to, I have 50 acres, but I've been stumped the last 2 years cause of the deer being nocturnal, only on camera between 12-4 or 5 am, sit all day, nothing, I de-scent everything including myself including my guns, food plots tore out the ground, but by October, cause of the heat, bare ground.

Hi Jacob! I like to add about 4 weeks after germination and right before a rain. Make sure not to add when the leaves are already wet and no rain is in the forecast. Like during a morning dew...can burn the leaves.

Question, what do you do with a tall, thick stand of winter rye/wheat when spring/ summer rolls around? Mow? Burn? It seemed pretty smothering this year
Hi Nick, I kill or mow early. I highly recommend my ultimate no till planting system. You spread your buckwheat into the standing rye and then mow or kill the rye over the seed depending on timing. But you never want to let it go past 15-20" tall...wheat or rye.

Nick, as Jeff said don't let if get tall and out of control. I did and had to mow and rake it off the field in order to plant a food plot in the area.

First you say plant rye, then at the end you say don't plant rye grass. Whats the difference. Need something extra right now for my plots. There the only green thing around soon but want to jaz them up some
Have you ever added rye to soybeans right before leaf drop? If you have how did the rye do. I am thinking about trying it this fall.
I have and that works very well...right before leaf drop tho, or the bean leaves will shade out germination and kill the rye. At least 200#s per acre at this point too...
Not bad timing for tillage radish right now too...grows quickly with a lot of rain...like we have been getting and is still in the forecast!
Whitetail Habitat Solutions I am going to try about 1/3 of one of my bean plots, I have around 20 lbs of left over rye seed. Just a small test area and maybe next year I will do the whole thing if it turns out good.
I have been doing this in my beans for years and it works great.
