The fact that Cordy didn't make it to the end of her own alternate reality episode was a huge shocker when this first debuted. I honestly can't think of a case like that happening beforehand in television and even today it's still incredibly unique.
I think it had been done, although I cannot remember where, it is certainly extremely rare, because it usually takes the one who made the wish to take it back.
The drawback is that none of the characters remember the alternate reality, almost making the episode pointless (though still great) except for Anya losing her powers.

At first glance, this episode is kind of indulgent, just a fun "what if" with no lasting consequences. Cordelia doesn't even remember or learn a lesson, which is usually what happens in this kind of episode. But Anya lives on...
in the other world, kendra and faith wouldnt be slayers, since buffy "dying" to the master is what caused a second slayer to be empowered
Does that mean in the regular version of the Buffy world, Cleveland looks like this because Buffy wasn't there? Maybe there's a hellmouth in Detroit too haha.
@@StephOMacRules I think in the show's continuity Faith came to Sunnydale from Cleveland, with Kakistos and Trick in pursuit.

Amy would still be trapped in her moms body, and there wouldn’t be a need for the anointed one as the harvest would have released the master.
And since Buffy never went to Sunnydale to meet Angel the elderwoman would not feel that there would be cause to watch over Angel so Ms Calendar would never be sent to Sunnydale.

It’s interesting how much Drusilla and Willow are like as vampires, very playful, sadistic, and crazy… I find it interesting that in the Buffy versus the more innocent you are, the more evil a vampire you become
The more connected you are to your soul, the more you change when you lose it.
Vampire Willow isn't really crazy like Drusilla. She's just hornier.
That's the thing that makes Buffy so interesting and no other show comes close to its complexity. Most vampires aren't simply evil but seem to exhibit the humans hidden desires and tendencies they usually won't show when they have a soul. Willow probably had sone same sex attraction hidden in her as a human but it was never explored until she became a vampire...and obviously later confirmed when she met Tara..
Well, not really true in Angel's case. He wasn't exactly an upstanding citizen as a human, and then Angelus was one of the most evil vampires to ever exist.
What's interesting is that the Prophecy in season 1 remains true in this universe, the Master kills the slayer. In a way, once again, she is brought back by her friends (Giles breaking the spell) : )
You're going to start noticing a lot of familiar faces on BtVS and eventually Angel. Most of them will be "Hey its that person from that movie/show" but a handful will be "HOLY SH*T" cameos.
I cant wait for their reaction at the S4 premiere

I beg/politely recommend watching angel and buffy side by side as separate shows instead of interchangeably on the same schedule, it will save years and be much more enjoyable.
@@snubblebunny Disagree. There are things that start on one show and finish on the other. Not joining them up dilutes both shows.
@@markrankin1094 sure, that does happen (not a lot) but going by the other reactors who do it on a linear schedule, it takes double the time. Talking years and some things are forgotten. Plus The risk the reactor moves on or life changes get in the way. I’m a greedy fan lol I want it all asap

Joyce has this throwaway line in the pilot episode about having to move to Sunnydale just to find a school that would take her. I always think that in this reality, without her friends to keep her grounded, she ended up dropping out of school all together and slaying full-time.
Completely forgot Cordy "died" two episodes in a row. Too hilarous. It would have been so evil if this one stuck.
10:18 Not my theory but someone else mentioned that this is symbolic of Willow and Xander sucking the life out of Cordelia through a kiss. Gives me chills.
Gotta say, Cordelia looked fantastic in this episode. Her return to school outfit as well as the turquoise one... awesome.
The Master gliding down the stairs is so camp.
This is my most favourite episode! It shows you how really important Buffy's friends are. Without them, she turned into a merciless non-chalant slayer. No empathy, no emotions - a pure hunter.
And she ultimately dies in the permanent way.
Anya was such an underrated villain, I wish (no pun intended) we got more episodes of her being evil
But she is so bad at being a good guy it’s funnier.
Suraj, the "gay guy" is Larry Blaisdell.
Larry first appeared in 2x06 | "Halloween" then 2x15 | "Phases", 3x01 | "Anne", and 3x09 | "The Wish".
He also played one of Max Dennison's ( Omir Katz ) bullies, Ernie aka Ice in "Hocus Pocus" back in 1993.

So, this is technically the first episode of Buffy I ever watched. I was six, my cousin had it on while she was babysitting, and the blood sucking conveyer belt gave me nightmares that left a permanent memory. Cut to like a decade later on my first watch through of the show and lo and behold! WILD feeling figuring out where *that* nightmare came from.
One of my favorite episodes of the series, music and everything was on point. Surprised yall didnt like it more

Mine too. It's less significant in the overall arc of the show, but it's a really superb bottle episode
This crew likes to laugh more than have serious or hard episodes. They enjoy when it’s a jokey or corny episode that matches their energy. Or even the last episode that was serious but had quips scattered through out the episode. Like this crew severely enjoyed season 1 for all its cheesy dated corny glory. I wouldn’t be surprised if they rank season 1 over season 2 or 3. I completely disagree but it’s just their vibe.

22:10 lol, this isn't THE hellmouth, this is A hellmouth. Don't want to spoil anything but I love how the finale brought this back and it took me nearly 20 years to realize it.
"There's another one in Cleveland. Not to spoil the moment."-Giles in the series finale. That's all I'm saying.

The Wish is always a fan favourite. A great concept here with the alternative reality. We get introduced to Anya The Vengeance Demon, the moral of the episode is be careful what you wish for. Cordelia being Cordelia opens up the alternative dimension, some great comedy one liners here too, and of course foreshadowing again for the future. Cordelia's vacuous airhead friends are so cruel to her and others. Giles saves the day confronting Anya and restores things back to normal. Again we see S3 being so innovative with much better writing and storylines. It just gets better and better. I told you guys it's a 'bangerfest' from here on in to the S3 finale. I am surprised you didn't like this episode more, I think it was a brilliant highly entertaining story packed with foreshadowing the the overall show.
The episode hinted that the rest of the world is even worse because the master opened the hell mouth that's why no one wants to leave Sunnydale.
The show also let you know that and it'll be more expand upon with the show with Angel, that there are more hell mounts around the world, just like there are multiple dimensions
This was one of the better "alternative reality" stories I have seen. It has everything you want out of a dark reality but is also a little different to the typical formula with Cordelia dying n stuff. Its also always fun when things like this are Canon even if they don't matter to the story.
Season 1 finale prophecy comes true again.
3:05 God, poor Jonathan. They're making fun of Cordelia, sure, but he's the real victim here - the whole punchline is "haha you're soooooo pathetic and unattractive we'll use you to say Cordy's at rock bottom"...and then the camera just cuts away and ignores him to focus on how the hot girl who used to *bully everyone* is getting by bullied by the people *she trained to be cruel*. It's not the last time this show (including the good guys!) will do a totally casual drive by on Jonathan and then move on, basically treating him as a human joke because he's small and nerdy-looking.

Yeah, Jonathan's character gets a raw deal at times. But I will say, without trying to give too much away here, that the show tends to gravitate between treating him like cannon fodder and treating him like a fully developed, multifaceted human being.
Jonathan is such a curious character. I wish we knew more about him.

This was a dark episode even for Buffy standards. Could have been made into a season long storyline!
Except they have to change the ending so that all the characters don't just forget the alternate timeline. Otherwise, that season would be a huge waste of time except for Anya losing her powers.

This was an epic episode when it first aired. Really surprised they weren't fawn of it.
One of my all time favourites! But the fun thing is that it would never work for people who hasn't seen the show and knew the characters so none of it would hit
You can see Anya silently sympathizing with Cordy while Harmony is mocking her. She just wants to help, in her own freaky demon kind of way

People ask this question about haunted house stories all the time and the answer is always the same. Not everyone is rich enough to just move. People in the real world live in terrible places all the time because they just can't move.

This show... Never gets old. It's an upswell of emotions from season 3 up and by season 7 you're just effin' breathless. You wanna be on everyone's side so bad but you can't and how Whedon and his army of writers and directors and the actors themselves grew each character so fully, you treat them like the Buffy I know, the Willow I know, the Dawn. Love that new generations are finding this gem and your show reactions are a great way to rewatch the series. I work and study late at night and you're in the background, as if I were watching it with my own crew. Love it. keep up the good work and hope you continue , you wont regret it one bit! Maybe I should stop watching the playlist until all the seasons are up. Oooh, but I just cannot help myself from clicking that play button. ( Shoutout to everyone , so cute you all! And the spoofs! The biggest difference between AUBuffy and Buffy is that Buffy is fighting to live her life with her family and friends together and AUBuffy was living from fight to fight with no hope.
Makes you wonder if she was living with her father.

Chris is right . Badass was the proper term to use. Hardass is for someone ( like a Father figure or Authority figure ) who are uncompromising in their points of view / beliefs . While " badass " can be used to describe anyone who is cool , and or super-tough . There is more nuance with Badass.

18:10 - love that last shot, showing the Scooby Gang all restored, reunited and happy and unaware of how bad things were in the Wish alternate reality...it reminds me of the end of It's A Wonderful Life when...[spoiler alert if you haven't seen that movie]....
...all the people of the Bedford Falls come to donate money one at a time and George sees them "restored" to their happy selves. It's really a touching shot...

Cleveland is also a Hellmouth. It’s not exclusive to Sunnydale.
Don't forget that Emma (Anya) was also in Wandavision. Every since episode one there are people in this show that went on to a lot of places. You see even more when Angle starts.
Miss Calendar wouldn't have been there since she didn't have to look after Angel and keep him and Buffy separated. Just as the Master would have gotten out earlier without Buffy there, so there would be no need for the Annoying One.

Such a good episode...I love Dark Willow. And we get Anya who is so funny.
Although Cordy has acquired some fighting skills, she is much braver when fighting around the Scooby gang. It was a good idea to have her perish reasonably soon. Although the Scooby gang are supposed be teenagers, when Cordy got out of the sports car in THAT dress I couldn't suspend disbelief any longer. Yes, Cordelia comes from a wealthy family, but she was looking looking a confident woman rather than a teen. Loved the slow-mo fight & music at the end.
LOL when it's this many folks on the couch, the jokes be flying.

Except in this timeline it's impossible. Jenny was sent to keep an eye on Buffy and Angel. No Buffy means she's not needed.
@@timothypierce5303 also even if Jenny was in Sunnydale, it's still wouldnt have worked because AU Giles doesnt know the life of real Giles. So he would have no idea that jenny is dead in the real universe and thus it wouldnt factor into his decision making at all. Cordelia would have to have told him, and there is no reason she would logically as her goal is to get back to the real universe.

Their job is to react to shows together, they constantly build off each other's comments and stop fully focusing on the show to do so and people are bad at multitasking. It's a common thing with large reaction groups: there's a limit to how much the human brain can focus on at once without missing details. And if one group member gets the wrong idea and repeats that wrong idea often enough, it can change what the rest of the group remembers, because human perception is fallible and memory is much more open to suggestion than we like to think it is.

Mr. Trick wasn't wrong about Sunnydale being mostly white Anglo--Saxon, but there are a few people of other ethnicities, East Asian in the case of the girl here.

Notes: The pacing is very different, when there aren't any commercials like there were during the original broadcast. So it is easier to see the actions of the characters. It looks like the wish was undone and certain characters were saved. But I guess it would be, "spoilers", to bring up, not the next episode per se, but the follow up episode to this one? 🤔
Back then, we didn't know how, Joss Whedon, would contribute to both the, "MCU" & the "DCEU" - "DCU"!
Have you seen those interviews in which people asked him, Scarlett Johansson & Sarah Michelle Gellar, about who would win a fight, between, "Black Widow" & "Buffy the Vampire Slayer"? 🤔 Joss, was very diplomatic with his answers. But the gals, had to first remember what their characters could do, before getting so hypothetical. 😁

I think Buffy can never win against the Master because of the whole death prophecy thing. No matter what, their face off ends up with him killing her. It's just that in wish reality he did it in a lot more efficient permanent way.

My favorire thing about this is Oz killing Willow the episode after she chears because Oz is the last person who would seek payback and yet got. It anyway.
I've always enjoyed this episode although more for badass Buffy than vampire Willow.

In the grand scheme of the show it's a minor nitpick but for me the only missed opportunity for this episode is not having Eric Balfour appear as Jesse (as one of the White Hats).
