Everyone has someone to spend Christmas with......except Xander. He would rather sleep outside alone in the grass than deal with his family at Christmas.
It's a shame the show never actually delved into that.

this is basically Angel Episode 0, a great thesis on what the show Angel will be. one of my faves. Angel is definitely still cursed .. Willow basically just restored the same spell. The constant push and pull of Angel and Angelus is what his show is about and more will be understood there.
A good metaphor for understanding the question of Angel's guilt and culpability is I think drunkenness. If someone was made drunk without consent, how responsible are they for the things they do while drunk? It's understandable why they would feel guilty for something they did while drunk, even if it wasn't their choice to be in that state. Yet if someone is violent or cruel while drunk, that does seem like a stain against their character in some ways whether that's fair or not. It's like sobriety is the only thing holding them back from their impulses which seem to be quite awful. Not endorsing that perspective, of course, but I think many people have a hard time forgiving people even after they've sobered up. Can't "unsee" what the person is like without inhibitions, even though its our inhibitions and actions that define who we are.
With Angel, the demon in him takes pleasure in his sadism and it's just the soul holding him back. The metaphysics aren't entirely consistent through the show, but at this point I think of Angel as having deep down a desire to do awful things but his soul (conscience, ability to empathize) holds him back. I think that makes his character so much more interesting - if he's actively holding back a demon that's always there.
Yeah, the writers have all but revealed that Angel the series as a whole is a metaphor for alcohol recovery, so I'd say you're right on the money.
I would add that it's like a recovered alcoholic who had accomplished great artistic or social feats when they were drinking and were unremarkable as a sober person. What bothers Angel on an existential level is that as a human he was lame and pathetic but as a vampire he became famous for being the cruelest and most creative killer. It's much harder to embrace your life existence as a human if you shine your brightest as a vampire. It's like his essence was more compatible with the demon than with his soul.

Guys. All vampires have their souls replaced by demons. The demon is not the curse. It’s standard vampire sh*t. Angelus just happened to be particularly sadistic. The curse is that he has his soul back so that he feels guilt and pain and cannot feed off of humans. As he’s currently walking around, feeling immense guilt and struggling to exist, he’s clearly cursed again.
We're gonna ask you to rewatch this episode in about...two years from now

This episode has a special place in my heart. The ending I adore. They get to enjoy a happy moment together that allows them to forget their complications. This show was so much better than it had any right to be!
I'm glad I'm not the only one who saw the inherent chemistry between Buffy and Faith.
I see they are still confused at how Angel's curse works. IDK why, I think the show has been pretty clear that Angel has been re-cursed with the exact same curse.
I will never understand how Sarah Michelle Gellar and David Boreanaz did not get all the acting awards for their acting in this episode, especially that final scene on the hill, there both so incredible and phenomenal. I love this episode, I watch it every Christmas, it’s a yearly tradition for me.

With Angel making his anti-Christmas comment at the start, and the spirits the First sends to him, Angel being redemptive at the end, and it being Christmas and all...This is a dark version of A Christmas Carol.

Angel lost his soul because of a stupid loophole by the curse casters. Willow did the same spell that Jenny's clan did which probably was the only spell Jenny's clan knew which was the no perfect happiness clause. I'm sure if Jenny knew another spell to nix the perfect happiness clause she would because she'd still be alive if that clause wasn't a thing.
So yes Angel is the same Angel he was in season 1 but with more guilt because he hurt Buffy and her friends and spent 100 years in a hell dimension.
@@ThEmB0nEz I always got the sense that when the Clan did the spell the first time they very much chose to include the curse loophole. They wanted him to suffer eternal torment.
Then Spike ate most of the gypsies when Darla was trying to get Angelus back... meaning most of their best spellcasters and a lot of their generational knowledge was just lost... now all they can do is copy paste the old curse at best, rather than try to figure out anything different.

Yes Willow re-cursed Angel before buffy sent him to hell. That curse is why he has his soul. If that curse is ever removed from him his soul will be too, because that curse is the only thing connecting his soul to his corpse.
There’s other ways to get your soul. A skilled wizard/witch could experiment with the spell to place it in Angel without that rule.

One of my favorite episode, Angel episode. t was a beautiful bangel Christmas special episode no offense to some!. They needed these scenes of confrontation to move forward. This episode lays the groundwork for the spin off of Angel and the start of a redemption. SMG and david were so amazing,there chemistry,OMG. I'm curious, Do you will react to Angel spin off??you should, you will be surprised

I desperately need you to continue this buffy journey. that ‘desperate for it not to end’ feeling you get at the build up to the final episodes is one of the most exciting television experiences. Scooby gang re-cursed Angelus, the same way that the Romani did before, right before he was sent to hell. Same conditions apply to Angel now, if he experiences bliss then his soul goes away.
Angelus and Angel are not different beings. Angelus is Angel without his soul. He’s an embodiment of what happens if you take a normal person, with typical wants/needs/selfishness, crank up all of those 100x and then take away all guilt, empathy and kindness.
The grim adventures of Billy and Mandy depicts Santa as a vampire.
Amends was one of the best episodes of S3, and for me personally a top ten from the whole show. We are introduced to one of the worst Big Bads of the whole show in The First Evil tormenting Angel through his past victims. The concept of The First is that it gave the writers a way of reintroducing old characters to add to the richness of the show, as The First can channel its evil through dead people attacking the mind of the living. The ending scene with Buffy and Angel is brilliantly acted when Buffy is trying to save Angel from daylight, SMG and David Boreanaz absolutely knock it out of the park here, and The Hallmark movie ending even though schmaltzy, just works so well with the storyline. Comic relief with Willow using Barry White to seduce Oz is funny but sweet and innocent too. Again the acting from SMG and DG at the end was superb. Another great episode keeping up the brilliant quality of S3. This is actually a very important episode in the the show going forward. Great reaction again guys, can see that you really get the show and appreciate the writing. S3 is just banger after banger, the quality of the episodes just improves so much.
This is one of my favorite episodes of season 3.

This episode covers a lot of ground about the other characters despite the fact that the main focus is Angel. My main take away is always the confirmation that Xander's family is shitty and he'd rather sleep outside (where vampires can him) than be with his parents.
Mark 11:03. Both, "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" & "Angel", cast members did product commercials, that seemed to take place in each show, except that they weren't in character, and it was so meta. The exception being, Sarah's commercials for, "Cover Girl", as they didn't take place on the sets. They just broke the momentum instead. What's that expression? "Took me out of the show"? 🤔
But anyway, one of them did do commercials for, "Sprite"! Something about how in character, blood, was the only thing that quenched his or her thirst. But as herself or himself, "Sprite", was the thirst quencher.
This is a SIGNIFICANT episode that you'll need to revisit eventually, but I won't spoil it.
I wonder if any of these guys will ever remember this episode in the future... one word... foreshadowing

This episode's place in the overall structure is kind of wild. I always forget this is here.
YEAR AND A HALF LATER EDIT: "I think there's going to be a second part to this." And now they are finally in the follow-up to this episode, but I'm not sure they've quite twigged to that yet.
Mark 3:06. Howdy! 🤠 Seeing her like that after knowing her future, in hindsight, for me, it's very odd. By the way! Alyson, met her husband because of this series. Then while she became a series regular in, "How I Met Your Mother", he was recurring. I have yet to see him cameo in, "Penn & Teller: Fool Us", of which she is the hostess of. But the future of, Alyson Hannigan's, is not what I meant! Willow's is! 🥴
It may seem cheesy, but this episode actually revealed a lot more than you can know for quite a while. Go back and listen closely to what she said to Angel when he decided to die rather than betray Buffy.
It may appear that the sky being darkened is a cheesy christmas special plot, but it isn't. It was blotted out because Angel made the right choice (refer back to Lie To Me on season 2) and so his life was spared.
20:20 Angelcakes still has a soul, so he is still very much cursed. 🧛🏻♂️ He is, in essence, split in two. He has a demon in him and he is a man with a soul. He's _Mr. Conflictedface._

Love Pat going "they wouldn't do that in the 90s". Technically correct, but not by much. Man are y'all in for some amazing TV in the next couple seasons. While I think the show peaked in S3, I don't think the quality ever really declines. 20 years later, probably 5 or more times through the whole series, and I still can't really pick a favorite season. Just so many amazing episodes and moments come flooding back when I try and pick one. Enjoy. I can't wait to see the reactions to some of the upcoming moments, both comedy and heart wrenching...

Oz telling Willow he knows it'll never be over between Xander and Willow was key to how I see why he would give her a chance and still be willing to try again while watching her continue to be friends with Xander. Most people wouldn't be comfortable with that idea, and if he were to say not to be friends with him it wouldn't work. There's enough issues still to go between them before things are better. Willow attempting to push for the romance so soon and when she and Oz weren't even there before she cheated is one of those issues.
Marketa is right. Giles didn't need to invite Angel in. He could have remained on the doorstep if Giles was uncomfortable letting him in. And Giles is also wrong in saying Angel having a piece of mind has something to do with why he lost his soul.
5:41-5:51 is the real reason behind some fans, and some characters issues: Angel's face being the same as Angelus's face. Which I find interesting considering the hyena wore Xander's face. I think its why Buffy and Xander had issues up until _Bewitched, Bothered, and Bewildered._ People can say Angel and Angelus are similar or the same, but at the end of the day Angel wouldn't do what Angelus does. He does, however, wear the same face. And while the hyena was possessing Xander, it had Xander's face, particularly while sexually assaulting Buffy. During _The Pack,_ Buffy doesn't know Xander too well, so she would see Xander because of what the hyena did, as they had the same face (and because Xander lied about not remembering, so they could never talk about the issues Buffy would have). She would see Xander that way, until _Bewitched, Bothered, and Bewildered_ when the spell has her seeing him not taking advantage of her, and she says at the episode's end, "You came through" as if she hadn't been sure. Because she hadn't been due to their not talking and not having known each other well when the hyena possessed him. Having the same face is an issue Buffy and Xander had to deal with (also another reason of many reasons I have for Xander's hypocrisy about Angelus, but that is a whole different argument), and it is an issue Angel is currently dealing with in this episode. The difference is Angel has never been part of the inner circle of friends and isn't being treated as well as Xander was post-hyena.
Robia LaMorte (now Scott) didn't enjoy playing The First because as a religious woman saw the character as the Buffyverse version of the devil.
It's an episode that takes place at Christmastime, but not really a Christmas episode. There will be those that argue that, but this is how I see it.
Funny that because The Normies see snow regularly, they forgot that California rarely does. Add to the fact that it was 70+ degrees at the episode's beginning.

The gypsy curse does not remove the demon inside of Angel. It gives Angel his soul and suppresses the demon. Willow did the exact same spell that Jenny Calendar's people did on him. So the original curse is back. If he has a moment of happiness, not sex, any type of pure happiness, it removes his curse and he loses his soul, the only thing keeping him in check.

At first glance this ep appears to be weak however it sets things up for later seasons as well as being somewhat of a prologue to the series Angel core theme which is why so many consider it Angel ep 0
