Excellent video, first one I've seen that decently answered how a lot of the new 1300GS came about. It was good to hear the philosophy of how the package and design evolved, some of it being driven by legislation (ie headlamp homologation) Of course that's irrelevant to all the YT desktop designers and engineers who just know THEY would have done it so much better...... Obviously nothing is completely perfect ( a thin strip LED brakelight above the rear radar housing rather than integrated in indicators anyone?? ) and some stuff a compromise such as the carryover TFT due to space. Thank you, a lot of my questions answered in a handful of minutes, well done.

To speak with the designer about tech details and design philosophy is so cool. I am debating a gold wing or the GS as my next purchase. Comfort, power and distance are priorities and both bikes are great. Maybe when the adventure model is released? Damn BMW your bike is beautiful. Cheers LWH.
Great interview. I am glad you asked about the RT also. I wish you questioned him about the turn signals in the handgrips as they will break easily in a fall and need to be replaced ($$$).
Reliable sources indicate that an R 1300 RT is coming in 2025, carrying the same new powertrain as the 1300 GS, and the chassis being redesigned along similar lines.
Sure, the bike is lighter, but it’s not better. Still the worst GPS, the only bike without backlit controls, and now plastic panniers. No one is saying that the stamped frame is stronger. It appears as though BMW is chasing the competition instead of producing the best tourer for any conditions. You have saved me money, because I’ll continue to ride my GS1250

It really is ridiculous. I get that the radar cruise unit has to be in a certain place and BMW wants to save weight but a proper, centrally-mounted rear light is a must on any motorcycle. Still, I guess Weiser Technik are pretty happy about it 😊

As a complete non ADV person and someone who considered the GS to be one of the ugliest bikes ever made, I am liking the redesign and craftsmanship of this new version. It's a tour de force of what the Germans are really good at.
Great way of putting it. The GS has always been about function over form, and in this case, they came up with a redesign that didn't need to sacrifice form, which is something that can't be said about past designs. Seasoned adv riders likely have an emotional attachment to the older, more barebones and "rugged" look. But for those of us who come from a non-adv background, the new bike looks better in every way.
So in short they have managed to attract people that will not buy one while pushing many away that would have considered an upgrade for their 1250? Not exactly a good business plan. I was going to buy the 30L version when it comes out… if this is how it looks I think I will give it a miss, hopefully that version comes out with a better look hopefully.
@@bens5186 BMW is indeed trying to expand the GS customer base beyond the existing group of GS buyers. If non-adv folks are attracted to the 1300 GS, why would they not buy one? I already have a deposit down on one myself. And isn't adv riding primarily about function over form anyway? Even if you consider the 1300 uglier, functionally, the 1300 is better than the 1250 in pretty much every way.
@@derache123 The people commenting that like the new look are by their own admission “not adventure riders” they are mostly from sport bike backgrounds. I honestly do not see ANYTHING better from a functionality point of view. The Air filter is harder to change, requiring crash bar removal possibly. This will be a treat when de-watering the bike after a drop in a water crossing. The headlight will be harder to cover with stone protection. The fuel capacity is down on this model so will likely be down even more on the adventure variant (when/if it arrives). The bike looks a lot harder to fit soft luggage to. (100% required for dirt). Unless you are only riding this to the local cafe to sip lattes it appears to be a downgrade in every way with exception to the quick-shifter which apparently works well now. Time will tell when these start rolling around in the BMW enduro safari’s. I honestly think they have lost their way…
@@bens5186 Yes, you're absolutely right. I am a sport touring rider. I have no plans to ride on the dirt, and I have put a deposit down on a 1300 GS. The reality is that the vast majority of GSs are used as sport touring bikes, or I suppose as you put it, "riding to the local cafes to sip lattes" if the local cafe is the Sierra Nevadas, and the lattes are the mountain passes. And for sport touring riding, the new GS is absolutely better than the old one. I don't care about changing the air filter after a water crossing, nor do I care about mounting soft luggage. I do however care about a smoother and more powerful engine/gearbox, lighter weight, and an electrically adjustable windscreen, just like I have on my RT. If I ever do decide to pursue adv riding, I'll do so on a middleweight such as an F 900 GS or Aprilia Tuono. That is the direction the offroad-oriented adv market is headed, and BMW knows it.
So… will the 30l version have a better looking front end? a simple outer ring on the front light would have looked a lot better than the X. The other thing a ring DRT would have done is allow simple elegant perspex covers to be made to protect the package. Its needlessly large and complex. I guess you can just 3D print a cover and black out the stupid X configuration. I am sure someone will come up with an aftermarket replacement headlight that will use the same amount of space with a spotlight built in.
The video could have been a lot shorter had the designer been direct and stated that BMW wanted to cut corners regarding cost, appeal to a broader market, and ultimately make even more money,
Nothing wrong with making money. They deserve it, it's a great bike. Fact is price has only gone up 3.6% per year over my 1200 LC bike fully loaded and the 1300 has many more features. So in reality the 1300 is quite a good value at least in comparison to the 1200 LC.
@@derache123I guess not. It is just business as usual. Now the bikes from all manufacturers look cheap. In the past, BMW was a standout as far as fit & finish. Now they are just part of the pack.
me likey.. Always appreciated the big rhynos, but never wanted one for myself.. Too tall, too bulky, and my frame is a bit too low.. just like the boxer engine :D. But now... I can really say that I'm eyeing one for next year, it's that nice.. And being so much more compact, I can't wait to test one for next season.
I like the weight reduction but it's still too heavy and expensive. Besides, I disagree with many design choices. The headlight and all the front are awful and over complicated. The tail is too short and misses a rack, but then needs a stick to hold the plate. The exhaust could have been integrated so that it doesn't take space from the cases or gets damaged if it falls. The turning lights in the handguards could have been a good idea if done in a more robust way. They could make a gas tank like KTM, low and resistant against falls, so that we wouldn't need bars that add a few kg. Etc. I'm sure it's a great bike to ride, but I'd feel out of love if I saw it in my garage.
I’m surprised no-one has noticed that the front end is significantly lower - meaning for 1250 levels of weather protection (not on the Trophy) BMW has had to include a ton of clear plastic winglets. It just looks like an afterthought, and the large square plastic block containing the dash, adaptive cruise and headlight now sticks up at the front of the bike like a very sore thumb. It’s a design mess, looks visually unbalanced and makes it looks like an almost naked bike. The rear of the bike, with the sharply upswept panels, just doesn’t work for a GS. It’s ugly and bloated even though it is physically shorter (I’ve seen one in person and it is NOT smaller, just the fairings are lower and narrower).
yeap ducati has been eating at their marketshare and has a much more desireable age demographic that BMW wants a piece of. However some of us old farts like the cushy ride of the old GS. Hope that hasn't changed much.
You're in luck then, the 1250 is still for sale and many dealers are offering incentives and discounts on them. Cheap used ones will also be on the market en masse once the 1300 starts showing up in dealerships.
We loved the 1250 GS ?? So we completely changed it ?? Made the headlight to look like “Predators Mouth” ugly and made the seat even worse !! Somebody decided to think that NEW is automatically better ,, no matter how bad it is !!
I can say mate you have it so wrong. It looks like a Honda now i will not buy it. I have so many BMWs and i can see now and you have spoiled it. Don't be proud go back to the drawing board and start again as i 100% will not buy it 💔
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Back in the early 2000s, Mercedes introduced the 4 door coupe concept (though I’m sure AML, and Ferrari might refute this). It was the CLS which had beautiful swooping lines. I remember around 2011 when it was replaced with the second gen CLS, which went all angular. I thought it was awful. A few years later, I bought one. When something changes radically, it’s hard to get used to it, but eventually over time it becomes acceptable.

At least now I know why it looks ugly. Thanks for the amazing content!
Would be nice to see faces of all members of theit team, so we would know who destroyed GS motorcycle line...
BMW does so much to promote ADV lifestyle and I don’t see this coming from Other companies
the others are just followers. I wonder what will they do now, when so many copied the design from a 1200 and 1250?
The video could have been a lot shorter had the designer been direct and stated that BMW wanted to cut corners regarding cost, appeal to a broader market, and ultimately make even more money,
Nothing wrong with making money. They deserve it, it's a great bike. Fact is price has only gone up 3.6% per year over my 1200 LC bike fully loaded and the 1300 has many more features. So in reality the 1300 is quite a good value at least in comparison to the 1200 LC.
Does that really need to be said though? Is that not what every company aims to do when they develop a new product?
@@derache123I guess not. It is just business as usual. Now the bikes from all manufacturers look cheap. In the past, BMW was a standout as far as fit & finish. Now they are just part of the pack.
You have written the most accurate explanation of this new bike.
Your channel came alive right after gs1300 release? why :)
Got bored of doing nothing :D Filmed a lot of bikes this year, didn't edit yet, but they are coming.
The fact that the headlight has to be justified proves they got it wrong
The only thing I don’t like is the headlight.
as a r1250gs owner 2023 i cant see a reason to so called upgrade to this im sure its a great bike its not enough in my opinion
If you get a photo of the 1400 how about sending it to me?
Get him fired!!Asap!He completely f..ked up😡
Dana whiteeee ask why we dont have carplay yet!!!!
wow long time no watchy watchy
Did you clicky clicky? :)))))
LoLoL havent seen the notifications ill check to make sure ive got em on @@LongWayHome
That's the enduro rack. Regular rack is much bigger.
I guess a R1300R with these goodies won't come until 2026?
He should take limp mode out of the design, it ruined many trips.
😎👍🏼👍🏼
IQ test on the trespasser…
You need to asked about the GSA😂😂😂 insisting 😂😂😂more
The 1300 redesign is a direct response to the Multistrada. They had to compete and I think other than the weird headlight they did a fine job.
No it isn't. Bmw has a continuous design agenda, to be able to continuously intraduce new models and maintain their market share.
yeap ducati has been eating at their marketshare and has a much more desireable age demographic that BMW wants a piece of. However some of us old farts like the cushy ride of the old GS. Hope that hasn't changed much.
Make the bike lighter - use more plastic!
I don’t like this style. Now it just looks like bike’s that are $10k less in price. Give me the 1250 instead.
Didn't fall for that one. well spoken, avoiding all difficult questions, form over function, or costs. I didn't believe a word of it
It looks like a Honda Hornet.
So in summary, they chose functionality over design, even if the end product looks awful. I guess Ducati always chooses design over functionality!
It's good to put a name and a face to the guy we should blame for this horrendous design.
I can say mate you have it so wrong. It looks like a Honda now i will not buy it. I have so many BMWs and i can see now and you have spoiled it. Don't be proud go back to the drawing board and start again as i 100% will not buy it 💔
The worst thing is that he really feels very proud for that awful design. 🥴
@@pgVeritas same as with the men that now say they identify as beautiful women that can win Miss Universe?
Sorry, but I'm an old school guy.
why don't you show us your designs?
He should be proud, it's a great design. Far superior to the 1200/1250 to put it lightly.
My wife is beautiful, but my best friend says she’s ugly. She’s a great ride though. Get my point? 😜
BMW designed great bike but get tired when they got to Headlight!
He must have been at across road with the design certainly with the head light ! Sorry it’s Fugley🤦♂️
