      layne anderson Do some research.. You're loaded with potential find sites.. Anywhere along the Ohio River could have been a camp site for instance.. Look for a copy of this: "William Dollarhide's Map Guide to American Migration Routes, 1735-1815" or other western migration maps / information as good starting points..

    Congrats, gents, great finds. But I’ve noticed a problem maybe you can help me with. I’ve spent the last 2 days watching “detecting” videos, and one thing I find very distracting is when you wand over an area, you obviously get an audio feedback via headphones. But for us watching at home, it seems like there is nothing there. Suddenly you guys are digging like a beagle after a gopher. But I never heard anything, so what are you looking for?
    My question is: is there a way to insert (picture-in-picture) a meter graphic to show what kind of audio response you got via headphones, to give us a clue as to what got you so excited? A digital or dial meter would be a big help in me being able to understand , how the detectors work, and how you use them. I am a complete neophyte and do not have a detector (don’t even know anyone that does) and have no experience, so I try to learn how things work. Thanks for your help, and keep digging!

    • @RonSwensonRelicAdventures
      @RonSwensonRelicAdventures  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Thom, Thanks for watching and taking the time to post a comment. We always wear headphones so that is why you do not hear anything. Occasionally we will unplug them and you will hear the machine making a tone. Our videos are more entertainment value vs educational value so I do not have the equipment set up to video both the screen, audio and the dig and then overlay all that info in the video. I suppose it could be done but really not the intent of our videos. We just try to capture a few cool digs and act like a couple goof balls when we find something really cool.
      There is a lot of info out there on how metal detectors work and the different ID capabilities they have. But for us we do not get that in depth. We just hear a beep and dig like a beagle after a gopher!! LOL
      Thanks again for stopping by.

      The coins were lost by gold miners during the gold rush. They were not "placed" and just a random drop and lost until we happen upon them!!

    Three gold coins found 15/20 feet from Andrews Spill? Andres started it? Sounds like this is part of Andrews Spill and metal detecting ethics would have told you to stay away from Andrews area. What a shame!!!

    • @RonSwensonRelicAdventures
      @RonSwensonRelicAdventures  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for stopping by but your assumptions are 100% off. Everything was above board with everything 100% discussed prior to the Gold coins being found. The golds were considerably farther away than what is stated and we hunted the general area of the spill for 20 minutes with no additional signals prior to agreeing that the site was open. So NO SHAME with these finds and pretty generous to let a guest hunt these types of sites with us. (and keep everything they find)

    • @johncreech6617
      @johncreech6617 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Andrew called you over. You guys jokenly say you knocked Andrew out and hunted his area? You also state Andrew starts it and now your getting into it. Mark did the research and it's fitting that he gets a good coin. You clearly thank Andrew for finding the first gold coin and you clearly state you guys are 15-20 feet from where the spill is. You guys should have walked back to where you were called from and allowed Andrew to search his area with his metal detector. No ethics in what you guys did and any veteran metal detectorist would tell you the same. And this thing about being generous and allowing guests to metal detect and keeping whatever they find? That's your added bonus? If you invite someone to go hunt the location in which you yourself are a guest it's finders keepers. Since when do detectorists ask other detectorists to hand over there finds to them. Not doing so is generious? The only time you would hand something over is if it has been agreed upon by the detectorists and the landowner. I've been metal detecting with other people for over 30 years and yes there is a code of ethics.

    • @RonSwensonRelicAdventures
      @RonSwensonRelicAdventures  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      John you are way off but entitled to your opinion
      First off--we always call each other over. We are not trying to hide finds from each other-- we always do that so that is not uncommon.
      Yes we said a lot in the excitement of the find- I didn't have a tape measure with me I was about 10-15 feet from Andrew when he found the 1st half dollar so didn't have far to walk back to. Some of those coins were within feet of my original location so I probably was entitled to dig and keep what I found but we didn't. They (Coins) were not all 2 feet from the originals they were spread out . Some were 10-15 feet from the original find. But we let him dig every target in that area. The gold coins were at least 40-50 feet from the "spill" It was rather dark when the golds popped out so distance was just an estimate when stated on the video. Just "in the moment" comments -not literal tape measure measurements.
      Two coins does not make a spill/Cache so we could have just dug and kept what we were hearing. But I felt it was more important to keep the find "whole" once we started hearing all the signals in that initial area. After 15-20 minutes with no signals we all decided as a group that we could beep and dig again. So we widened the area and started hunting again. I guess you feel whoever finds the first couple targets gets the entire site?
      FYI -- I left with ZERO coins
      Ethics?? Andrew was fine with the situation and we discussed at what point we all get to dig again. So I would say if he gave us the green light then your ethics comments go right out the window as it does not apply. If you have permission then it is not a ethics situation.
      We don't ask anyone to turn over their finds!! You are really reaching now with those last "generous" comments!! But YES we are generous to take people to sites that have these types of opportunities for great finds. The generosity is in the act of sharing these sites but you tried to tie it to the act of them keeping what they find. That is common sense and not "code of ethics".
      Again, you are entitled to your "30 years of experience" opinions but they simply do not apply to this situation and without you being there you have no idea of what/where or why things happened as they did. You simply saw video clips of things being found with no additional info/details or actions to fill in the gaps.
      Best of luck to you out there.

    • @johncreech6617
      @johncreech6617 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      First of all when a group of veteran detectorists go metal detecting we often do call one another to check our finds; however, we NEVER metal detect someone's HOT SPOT and that is exactly what both of you did. Everything is on video and at no moment have I wavered from what is happening on this video. Your total changing the facts from 15-20 feet to 50+ feet. It was dark and I could not calculate the distance is just a manipulation of the facts. It's on video!!! I'm not making this stuff up. Just listen to what Mark says after you say "It's only fitting that he gets a good coin"....... why don't you quote what he say? Quote him!! Those three gold coins were part of that spill and we're found 10-20 feet and is part of that spill. Coin dates, condition, and the FACT that they were found 15-20 feet from where that KID found gold and silver coins dated within 20 years of those gold coins. That's literally 6 steps from where this kid is digging. And it's only fitting that he gets a good coin?...... Just because you took the KID to your location it's only fitting that he gets a good coin? I'm quoting what is said on the video....not making this up. What you should have done was tell him to search his area for more coins and walk back to your location and keep hunting....which you did not. You both totally took advantage of Andrews find. Hey it's on video!!! I'm not making this stuff up. You even said quote "Andrew started it and now we are on it" end quote. And yes I've metal detected for over 30 years in two different continents and in those 30 years I have never......tempting as it might have been....because I too have been tempted....have I ever metal detected someone's Hot Spot. So absolutely no ethics in what you two did. Hey Anthony, Paco, Juan check what I just found....and if Anthony, Paco or Juan started metal detecting my HOT SPOT....well iethics would tell you to watch or walk away.

      @Tony Two-Cent. If you liked this one, you would also love Aquachigger's silver find in a river (probably a spill at a river ford). He found over 150 coins, none of which were newer than 1838. Most were U.S. halves, but there were a number of foriegn ones as well. It took at least two trips to find them.

      Hey Michael--thanks for stopping by and for the comment/question.
      Just gold value alone in $1300-1400 you may get a little bit of a upcharge for the coin but nothing here is unusually rare so I would say maybe $15-1600 with the story and video to support the find!

    • @RonSwensonRelicAdventures
      @RonSwensonRelicAdventures  7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Most of our sites are located via old maps. Usually old survey maps. Other useful items are old historical books about a specific area, or old diaries that mention certain stops etc. Then the records office will hold all the owner information you will need if it is not public.
      Good Luck

      +CA Relic Adventures w/ Ron Swenson & Mark Dayton Oh, why such large coins? No smaller silver/gold? Any reason for that? Ever heard of the country's last train robbery south of Ashland, Oregon, near the California border? There's supposedly silver dollars (still) scattered after the robbers used too much dynamite (killing a conductor) I live 40 miles north but I remember the explosion was at the other end of the Siskiyou Summit railroad tunnel. Youse guys come up here and we'll get together. Less than 2 miles from my house (outside Gold Hill, Oregon) is the lost gold of a stage coach robbery. I have the Lost Treasure Magazine article on it. Supposidly still unfound. Bag of gold dust hidden at the bas of a Madrone tree. The old man who used to own the property is still living and right down the road from me. I'm just looking for a "partner" to hike on back (about a mile) and start swinging detectors with me. I have satellite footage to look at on my computer. I own 4 Whites. I always have at least one in the back of my truck. Get a hold of me at daviddaveinternational@gmail.com I can't be but more than 5 or 6 hours north of y'all.

    It would be a interesting story to find out how the owner of these coins lost them.
    Did he bury them hoping to come back and retrieve them someday ?
    Was he attacked by Indians ?
    Was this from a robbery ?
    Why were they scattered around ?
    What do you think ?

    • @RonSwensonRelicAdventures
      @RonSwensonRelicAdventures  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey RB--Thanks for the view and the comment!! We have often wondered what really happened. I personally think it was a coin spill--meaning that it was dropped from a saddle bag or container on a horse s they were riding through the area.
      Don't think they were intentionally buried as they were too spread out and this area does not get plowed.
      late 1890's so kind of rules out Indian attack in that part of CA.
      Think it was a random coin spill and I am sure that person felt sick for months after that loss!!

      @@RonSwensonRelicAdventures Back in the 70's my folks bought a ranch below Carson City NV, it was a large chunk of land and they raised cattle and a few appaloosa horses. Mom was a history buff and researches the area and found out the Kit Carson Trail ran right through their property. So I go out and purchase a metal detector and went relic hunting. We mapped out the trail and there were some places you could make out a dirt trail. I found an old camp site and found some interesting relics including an old rusty cooking pot. No coins and no pull tabs! Part of an old revolver, horseshoes and lots of rusty stuff.

      @RonSwensonRelicAdventures  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Some comments sneak past and I don't see them. I try to reply to every comment but I guess 5 years ago I missed a few. Most of our research is done at the library. If you can find old plat maps they will show home sites for certain time periods. We usually look for the time period around the gold rush up to 1870's or so. That gives us the era we are most interested in. Also Sanborn Fire Insurance Maps are old insurance maps that show the location of houses and usually will show outbuilding etc. Tough to get into that era as many sites were not insured in the early gold rush. But great for older towns etc. when looking for older silver coins etc. A lot of our gold rush sites are just exploring along the gold rush areas. Sorry for the delayed response.

      Javers, Glad you found the video! This is a great hobby-gets you outside and the possibility of a very cool find. This hobby can be tailored for any area. Just adjust your mindset to what you are looking for. If you look in yards or parks the mindset is coins and trinkets. Don't expect relics. Beaches-Jewelry and coins. Etc etc. Yes it takes time to learn the machine and where to go but hat is all part of the game we play as detectorists!! Best of luck and glad we were able to give you a little motivation.
