    The “I tend to play the same games” part hit me real hard because I find games I’m comfortable with and I am honestly fine cycling through them over and over. There’s like a weird safety in it.

      Games, movies, books and everything else. I hyperfocus on familiar things until there’s literally nothing new that I could possibly find in them.
      And I actually cannot start new things until you spoil the hell out of them to me. Or if they just have a *very* enticing first impression.

    Fun fact; the dream bosses (gorb, elder hu, xero etc) were all simple bosses designed by Kickstarter backers, which is why they are quite simple.

    I cant fathom how much work got in for such a small team. Nearly every aspect of the game stands on its own : the art, the music, the gameplay, the level design, boss fights, story, customization, endings... While its not my favorite metroidvania its up there with SOTN and Super Metroid (I am a ori 2 enjoyer)
    Very nice indepth retrospective, i mostly agree with everything you say and you did a good work presenting the shining parts of the game while giving a bit of negative points that i also agree with. And i liked the memes 😶‍🌫

    In my first play through, I vowed to beat the whole thing without a compass!
    I… failed in Deepnest.
    But after two to four more tries, I think I can do it now!
    Seriously though, screw Deepnest.

    1:09:26 defeating stuff in dreams defeats them in real life as seen with Bretta, dung defender and the normal radiance ending since the infection is gone. What I mean to say is that in the pantheon ending you free the Hollow knight without killing them and also probably, you wake the dreamers if you didn't kill them.

      @@basedsamtv Top tip: avoid as much information about the game as possible. Finding out about -redacted-, -redacted-, the secrets of -redacted-, and, if you get the DLC, -redacted-, -redacted-, and getting the -redacted- to -redacted- are all part of progression, and finding out about them yourself is a big part of the game.
      Minor tip: there's an NPC who knows something no-one else does. Talking to them again later unlocks a quality-of-life feature that's easily missed.

    While I agree that it's a weird decision to not lock any achievements behind particularly difficult challenges and then having godhome ending be one, I feel like PoH has a place to be as it is. I played the game and enjoyed exploration a lot, but it would be a waste to have such brilliant combat to not have anywhere to fully shine. If you want to dip your toes into combat you can just do the colloseums and first pantheons, but I for example am fucking obsessed with it. I NEED such a challenge and i love the fact that on top of the existing difficulty there are bindings to test the player's resource management, patience and ability to adapt to downgrades and feeling weaker than they usually are. It's great that after several years after playing I can still return to this game and try pushing myself further. Yes P5 is a drag and yes it might not be the most pleasant experience but i think it's kind of the point, just like deepnest's aesthetic is to be a fucking shithole that you never want to be in, P5's aesthetic is to be a nightmarish test of endurance and skill that forces you to be just THAT good, just THAT strong that you can take on everything at once and beat a boss THAT bullshit at the end.
    Also kind of a shame that you mentioned spells extensively but barely talked about nail arts, I changed from not being sure if they even should be there to loving them and being in awe to how much they improve combat. Kind of understandable, they are hard to use as a new player, nailmaster's glory appears too late, you already have spells to worry about learning, and by the time you start seeing a usecase for them they are massively powercrept by maxed nail and a full nail build that most people likely used. However just like with spells that each have a use case, every nail art also has a niche, even the weird cyclone slash that I found first in my playthrough and labeled useless actually is the biggest dps in pantheons with bindings and is the fastest way to generate soul because of how many hits it does. I also really like the way they allow you to utilise downtimes in bossfights, rhytmic fights like grimm can be beaten exclusively with nail arts and it's actually a really satisfying experience.
    Yeah after all that I wanted to say that it was really a great video, you managed to put into words the subtleties of the mapping system and exploration in general that i felt subconciously but couldn't fully grasp. I just think that you should've put a huge spoiler warning at the start because this is a game that is a crime to spoil and some people might've thought that it's an overview of the game's exploration system and not a deep dive into your experiences with it. Cheers

    • @basedsamtv
      @basedsamtv  วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      haha yeah i dabbled with nail arts for a little bit when i was trying to find ways to beat NKG and P5 more consistently before eventually settling on the "unbreakable strength and quick slash go bbbbrrrrrr" strategy. i'm surprised i even talked about the spells for that long, truthfully. i don't use them much, like i said.
      i was considering putting a spoiler warning but assumed it probably didn't need it, hoping people would either be familiar with my past content or figuring it from the length of the video, but i'll probably start adding them in future videos.

    Fine video! I’ve wanted to say this for a long time but haven’t had a chance so my apologies for unloading here. Maybe it’s my love of horror or my inner goth but I’ve never understood the nearly universal Deepnest hate in the community. There are sound cues for all the enemies and they are rather weak. It must just be the atmosphere which is subjective and I’m in the minority.
    My only real complaint about Deepnest is that it feels incomplete and I don’t mean just the lack of a dreamer guardian. I have no idea whether this true but I’d heard that when finishing the game they either cut content or just hadn’t fully developed content for Deepnest. I’d like to believe this.

    • @basedsamtv
      @basedsamtv  2 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      deepnest is pretty tame compared to other horror scenes/locations for sure, but i think it just especially stands out from the rest of hollow knight. deepnest is really dark and chaotic and claustrophobic, in contrast to the beautiful, spacious gothic architecture and almost sort of cutesy character designs of the friendly NPCs and early enemies. guess it shouldn't be too surprising for a game all about insects, though!

    Give the darksouls games another chance hollow knight was the only game I loved intill I tried souls series there my comfort games. Hollow knight takes a lot of inspiration from Bloodborne but while I’m not sure exactly what they were inspired by I can assume some things like the soul system being a way to regain health is attacking like bloodbornes rally system and the endings are similar and the world looks similar in design.

    Brilliant review! I agree with everything you said! Especially with Pantheon of Hallownest. Only achievement I haven't gotten and it annoys me because I really dislike that there's an achievement for it at all (I even did Path of Pain, honestly the achievement should have been for completing either PoH or PoP because they are both extremely difficult challenges for completely different aspects of the game).
    I can't even get to Abs Rad, let alone beat him after 40 minutes of constant combat. Fuck UuMuu! Worst boss by far.

    Just wanted to let you know, Uumuu does suck in its first encounter, but if you replay it in godhome, Quirrell is actually gone, and instead you have to hit those large explosive jellyfish and make them smash into Uumuu. Sadly a moment where story made gameplay worse.

    Just wanted to tell you, while Uumuu does kinda suck in the normal game, with having to wait for Quirrell and all, if you refight her in godhome, you'll find the fight becomes a lot better, as you instead need to kill large jellyfish (like the ones in fog canyon) that shes spawns, and then make their explosions hit Uumuu to make her vulnerable. Sadly a moment where the game's story ruins the gameplay a bit
