The Flower Ending is the sweetest of them all, and to me it's the only truly good ending. It shows that a kind gesture dispelled the endless void and destruction. Just a tiny, fragile flower of love can heal the world.
@@Yusuf-ke5iuThe Knight dies in either good ending, and frankly I think it's fitting. Hornet refers to it as tge Ghost of Hallownest, which I think means she sees it as sort of the culmination of the kingdom itself, its ghost come back to haunt the land. In order to properly end this, Hallownest must die. It arguably deserved to fall, but even besides that, it can't be allowed to remain in stasis forever, nor to stumble along as a zombie-like parody of itself. The King is dead, the Radiance is dead, and for things to truly be over, the Knight, the culmination of the regrets of the kingdom, the huge black stain over it, must also die.
Team Cherry went on record to say how the elegant design, tight mechanics and subtle world building of Corey in the House was a key inspiration for Hollow Knight. They hope that Silksong can at least pay further tribute to that masterpiece but they’re grounded enough to know they can’t surpass its perfection.
Honestly, if that cute little Menderbug didn't have to die, then Hollow Knight would be perfect. I don't want to kill anyone, but as a game person I have to break into every house. at. any. cost.
One thing i think is smart and interesting about the choice to use bugs as the characters of this story is it softens the blow of how dark and twisted and graphic the events are. It allows for an unflinchingly dark story and world to be built, while not being too disturbing. Imagine Soul Sanctum with human bodies. Or the Abyss scenes with human bodies. Bravo
Having the story with humans would just completely change the tone. It would still be dark but not in the same way it is established. Having unpersonalized bugs being zombies is a lot different than human zombies even if they act the same. All in all it isn’t about how dark it would make the story but the added baggage it would create with human complexity. It’d be interesting to see a story go in this ballpark with humans although

I like how the delicate flower is so weak and pathetic that jostling it the slightest bit too much destroys it, but can annihilate the Shade Lord, the God among Gods, and all other names for Bill
When we give the flower to the godseeker, they remark there's no godliness in it. There's an almost comforting lesson in all of it, that if we take something small of ourselves, something pure, if we cultivate it, care for it, and give it freely unto others, that it can temper or remove the gods from the equation. That we don't need the brightest, most radiant light to stave off the darkness, maybe we just need a delicate one.

@@azekia Not all gods are equal. The godseekers start with weak gods that can barely be described as such, and through combat ritual seek to ascend and attune themselves to more powerful gods. That “first to climb out of the abyss” theory was the most convincing theory I’ve heard about how the hollow knight was chosen yet. It also adds a layer of narrative tragedy that the knight almost was the first hollow knight only to arrive just moments to late and to slip back In to the abyss
I really don't think this is the case. I think many of the vessels did make it to the top, but were rejected by the Pale King who used dream/essence powers to gauge their "hollowness", and banished them back into the abyss of they failed. Keep in mind that he also clearly had teleportation abilities, as many higher beings did, especially those with a strong soul and dream powers. So the theory that he was testing hundreds of vessels in secrecy is still plausible too.
I think both make sense. It could be that whichever knight made it first would be the vessel they went with and that the knight just came in right behind the Hollow Knight and then fell back down. However, it could be that the Pale King was indeed throwing all the other vessels off the top and the knight just happened to get to the top as soon as the Pale King had deemed the Hollow Knight a suitable vessel. Something to support the first one is that if the Pale King had been evaluating each vessel that made it to the top, then he would've chosen one that was guaranteed to be the perfect vessel while discarding the others. This isn't the case because the infection escaped from the Hollow Knight so it would make sense that he just went with whoever made it to the top first and just assumed they would be suitable. However, the second case could also be true and that the Hollow Knight was the perfect vessel until the attachment between it and the Pale King happened which would inevitably allow the infection to escape. The part in the memory where the Hollow Knight turns and looks back at the abyss could suggest that it already wasn't the perfect vessel, but we don't know for sure. We do know that the attachment it had to the Pale King makes it clear that it wasn't suitable, but that doesn't happen until later. I think I'm more convinced that it was the first to the top theory, but the second theory is still very plausible.
My personal interpretation was that the King WAS checking for 'hollowness', and only chose the most hollow. In fact, given that the Hollow Knight was corrupted by an idea INSTILLED, it may well have been a perfect, hollow vessel when the King chose it, only becoming tainted as the King raised it to its final form and it gained an emotional bond with the King. The player Knight, on the other hand, found its way out beyond the kingdom on its own, losing its memories and remaining small, before returning to the kingdom. In doing so, it remained free of any corrupting emotional influences, which left it truly pure and capable of containing the Radiance entirely. Ironically, the very fact that King chose the original Hollow Knight and not the player was what doomed the original Knight, and left the protagonist capable of completing its mission.
I think it’s super cool that the kingsoul/voidheart is symbolic of the creation of the vessel, with the king and queen each providing half of the kingsoul, then uniting with void in the abyss.
I think that the ascension was the test. That's why the king missed it. The knight also made it, that scene was his memory. The ascension those who turned to help their siblings were not pure enough, and when their siblings fell so did they. The one to make it was first thought to have no feelings of his own abandoning his siblings, perfect in the kings eyes, but the king turned his back and left, missing the glance back that the Hollow Knight gave his other sibling-a fleeting moment of regret.
@@eerov8256 Dogs and cats aren't human, but calling a female dog he/him is still inaccurate. Given the vessels lack an identity beyond a gender-neutral name, they/them is the only applicable term.

But, you don’t fight them. This is because of Zote. You see, the snapping noises are the sound of Zote’s mighty blade, Life Ender, cutting down the boss’s two mini-bosses, and then the boss itself. The reason you can only hear three snaps is because Zote is staying true to his precepts, namely Precept Fifteen, “One Foe, One Blow”. Zote’s victory is so complete he erases the boss from existence.

Hey mossbag, quick note at 39:58 about Herrah having no creature/s to protect her; she probably assumed that the entirety of Deepnest as a whole was enough to deter/kill bugs attempting to go to her. Remember, Herrah is in the very left of Deepnest, the farthest in. If any bug were to go in to Deepnest then they would have to wander very far to get to her, and very possibly be killed. I know I certainly was killed multiple times.

JayJay Noelastnām they are, the hollow knight is similar in age to the knight, and the hollow knight was there when the stag stations were operational. Elderbug clearly states that the stag stations were closed since before he was born, so the knight is likely significantly older than elderbug chronologically. (Biologically however, the knight is a child’s corpse that was hollowed out and controlled by the void, so it is biologically younger than any living bug today)
@@LatteSoul3603 I may be wrong (I haven't really gone too deep in the lore) but wouldn't the knight be older than the hollow knight or the same age because once the hollow knight was chosen, there wouldn't be a reason to make more?

I just realized something. Pale King's dream nail dialogue is, "no cost too great," and it's heavily implied that he wasn't too great a cost either. Also the wyrms raise the intellect and thought of the bugs around them. Maybe the pale king realized that he was his own folly. Bugs were smarter and able to dream more strongly. More importantly though, he could raise even the smallest amount of thought. He couldn't create a pure vessel to contain the infection because his presence was all it took to raise the vessel up from a mindless being. Even his successful hollow knight was eventually found to contain an imperfection. I think the pale king realized he was the one who gave the vessels thought. I think that's why the pale king hid himself and his castle away. He needed to remove himself to reduce the strong elevation of thought he caused in hollow nest to just a whisper. He couldn't reincarnate and leave the dream because maybe everything would just happen again (or maybe smol boi was just the final step in his life cycle). So the pale king stayed in the white castle in limbo and withered away because as long as he was in hollow nest he would be causing the ascension of bugs, including his vessels. He had to forfeit himself to eventually destroy the radiance, because there was no cost too great to preserve his kingdom.
I’m guessing he probably didn’t get killed by the player, he IS the king, and probably has some protection So pretty much the player broke his favourite mask and he’ll have to sleep on the floor

Yeah. Cause Hornet seems somewhat young. Especially since she was born when the whole Hollow Knight thing was being prepared. So Elderbug’s species is just fucked
My collector theory: The collector and his crew were sent by the pale king to find a cure to the infection, and, like in our own world, the first thing you do when trying to find a cure to a disease is looking for creatures immune to the disease. Notice that none of the collectors bugs are infected. At some point, the collector stumbled upon the grubs, who were all somehow immune to the infection. Trying to explain and replicate this immunity, the collector grew mad. He thought up an experiment where he would scatter the grubs all over the kingdom and expose them to the infection in these different conditions. This explains the vitruvian grub, a gone-mad anatomical search for an explanation, the grubs scattered around the kingdom, an experiment and the tower of love, a laboratory. In his isolation, the collector likely doesn’t know that the king is dead, and i really wouldn’t wanna be the one to tell him.
Very nice, calculated and *collected* argument... i would think that speading them across hollownest was not a part of a plan, the grubs are encased in glass flasks, i don't see how trapping them in flasks will let them emit thier immunity to others, if anything it would quarantine them away from diseases to be trapped inside the glass cages, the grubs are clearly hidden away from other bugs in remote areas, high and unreachable places, sometimes guarded or literally behind a wall, The Collector went mad trying to find their secrets so he hid the grubs and protected them, yet still kept a couple of them in his tower for love.
Im pretty sure Hornet was supposed to guard the dreamer the way uumuu and watcher knights were. She just decided to let us get it which is why her dreamnail dialogue when sitting next to Herrah is her asking for forgiveness that she didnt stop us
@@interdimensionalgoober8769 In my head canon Hornet was supposed to be the protector. But since she was observing the knight and knew what it was doing, she let it be. That's why you find her at the very foot of her mother's grave after the deed is done: she was there all the time but chose not to attack.
I always thought that the “idea instilled” that tainted the Hollow Knight was when he looked back at the top of the abyss and saw the player had climbed out and thought “maybe it doesn’t have to be me...”
This is a cool idea, but I think the idea of "personhood" or parental bond fits better. Thematically, it makes the reason the vessel failed, and the story happened, directly tied to their conception. The key-thing about the Vessels is that they were dehumanised by everyone who knew about their existance, including their "parents", the Pale King and the White Lady. They are called "Ghost", "It", "Empty" and "Hollow", all as overt references to that they're not truly alive, and by the game's mechanics they have no "Soul". And that is not even a mistake, because that result was exactly what the Pale King wanted to archieve, and was willing to sacrifice thousands of his own biological children to do so. "No Cost Too Great". So, if the irony is that all of the Vessels did in fact posess Void-based, "alien" minds, as the game implies, then the failure of the plan and the cause of the story lies on the Pale King himself. It's not even that he decided to raise the Hollow Knight like an actual child, his plan was doomed from the start. Interestingly, if we do take the interpretation that the Knight falling, and the thought of self-preservation was the key cause, then we also have to already pre-suppose that the Hollow Knight had a mind, and that it was advanced enough to consider things like survival and empathy. But those things become less connected to the main-plot, because the inciting incident was the knight's fall to the Abyss, and not the creation of the Vessels in itself.
@@rockCity777 The Pale King was blinded by his own hubris. He only accepted reality after he had already left the world, and died shortly thereafter. THK was fucked from the beginning regardless of what PK/WL did to them.

Here's the skinny on the Void Monster from the Godmaster ending: When the Godseekers attune with the Gods of Hallownest, those Gods become more powerful. They reach their peak potential. This is why so many bosses in Godhome are tougher than their vanilla versions. This is why the Radiance becomes the Absolute Radiance - through their Focus, the Godseekers have ascended. Their attunement to her causes the Radiance to ascend with them. Throughout the Godmaster DLC, the Godseekers slowly begin shifting their focus *to you.* The player. The Godseeker herself catches herself doing this and gets angry about it. The Lord of Shades, or whatever it is, is the equivalent of "Absolute Void." Before attempting the Pantheon of Hallownest, you are told: climb to the peak of the Pantheon and ascend. In fact, unlike Pantheons 1-4, the final Pantheon doesn't begin with you selecting the option "enter." It begins with you selecting the option "ascend." Through your conquest, the Godseekers Focus on you. Through their attunement, you ascend ever higher. Since you contain the Void within you, and the Void is unified under your will, their Focus causes the Void to ascend. *That's* what I think happens in the Godmaster endings, and what the Void monster is. Would love to hear your thoughts on this, mossbag!
That's a pretty good theory. It is pretty obvious that the attention of the Godseekers does shift from the Radiance to the knight. It's crazy to think that through hours of grinding out boss battles in Godhome you eventually become so powerful as to overshadow even the Absolute Radiance.
so in the end we still dont know what that exactly means for the knight to ascend since its unified under its will we just assume it turns into some void monster guy or accidentally kills itself with the flower
@@Vulpori Basically. Though I suspect it is not killed by the flower, but contained. Trapped in the Dream world/Godhome, perhaps teleported somewhere else.
I mostly agree, but I think it was less the Godseeker's attention that caused the Knight's ascension, but the Knight itself. The Godseekers are trying to ascend themselves, not the gods, after all. They state that they attune with the gods through ritual combat to ascend ever higher. Basically, my take is that the Knight simply does what they've been trying to do, only it does so successfully, truly ascending and becoming a Higher Being itself.
I still thinks Bill is the pale king. He vagely resemblee him, has some connection with the knight, is know for reicarnate, and the circustances of his "death" is surrounded by void and his famous last words "no cost too great" symbolizing he is willing to give away his own godhood to kill off the radiance. Also he can see the fulture, but i think its more the doctor Manhattan type of seeying the fulture, he can only see his own fulture trough infinite possibles outcomes. It could be this was his last choice, to reicarnate as a void being and be atunned trough the godmasters into Bill to kill the radiance

Radiance's sad story at working with computers: *there's a ton of bugs and some worm prevents me from working* also the first computer bug was literally a moth stuck in the machine so if your game lags it may be radiance manifesting herself inside of your device and trying to break out or the thoughts that keep me up at night at 3am
Hollow Knight: *is advertised as a beautiful exploration game* Also Hollow Knight: *is the unfortunate discovery of an ecosystem brutally destroyed by a mysterious infection, and those in authority try to contain it by shutting certain areas*- wait,
My best guess for the “pure vessel” status of the player knight is that the old Hollow Knight likely had its own will whereas I like to think that the player knight is being fully puppetted by the player. The lore tablets in the very beginning that contain some meta gameplay mechanic tutorials address not the knight but “higher beings” claiming only the player would see the messages. I feel like while many common bugs would see the knight acting if it’s own will and mind, I think that the White Lady may see the essence of the player and know that the knight is in fact pure and hollow
The pure vessel is in fact our Knight. The reason why the Hollow Knight failed was because it had developed a will and mind via the idea of it's task and it's personal attachment to the Pale King. This was enough for the Radiance to enter it's dreams and influence it. Many of the vessels had this impurity such as the broken vessel for reasons unknown. The reason why the Ghost aka our the player is sucessful is cause we left the Hallownest via the Howling Cliffs which takes away your memories and mind.
I also think this, ok hear this out, befor the knight adventured into the wild out of hallownest he had a mind and a will, like the other vessels, but he list his mind and will in the wild, until a higher being that probably had no physical body in that real (aka the players) took control over the hollow vessel that couldnt think or act and controled it for it to go to hallownest and defeat the radience, being the true hollow knigth or beating the radience and its variations
My smol brain for lore says that the collector was a failed kingsmold where instead of giving it the clear instructions of "protect people" they just said "protect" or they messed him up or something so he went around keeping bugs in jars because in it's 'mind' that would be protecting them. Also the grubs were kind of in a big danger so he was like "I'll keep them extra safe" or something.

Just a tiny, fragile flower of love can heal the world.

the knight gives the flower leading to it's own demise, or the void part of itself. it basically committed suicide.
Bravo
I never actually thought of it that way but that really does make so much sense, the game would immediately become 18+ if they weren't bugs
Infants, which would be worse
Having the story with humans would just completely change the tone. It would still be dark but not in the same way it is established. Having unpersonalized bugs being zombies is a lot different than human zombies even if they act the same.
All in all it isn’t about how dark it would make the story but the added baggage it would create with human complexity. It’d be interesting to see a story go in this ballpark with humans although

This theorie is like sperm... The one who touch the ovum won
I like the idea of our Knight arriving just after the Hollow Knight. That look back...

My collector theory:
The collector and his crew were sent by the pale king to find a cure to the infection, and, like in our own world, the first thing you do when trying to find a cure to a disease is looking for creatures immune to the disease.
Nice, makes sense to me
Well I sure as heck ain’t telling him
I like this idea, wow, very imaginative, I'm gonna consider this canon nonetheless
I really like this theory, but this also raises the question: what about the mimic grubs? I always assumed they were infected grubs, but maybe not.
Im pretty sure Hornet was supposed to guard the dreamer the way uumuu and watcher knights were. She just decided to let us get it which is why her dreamnail dialogue when sitting next to Herrah is her asking for forgiveness that she didnt stop us
Though Herra the Beast had no single “protector”, I feel like all of Deepnest is protecting her physical body.
Shiny Umbreon

Shiny Umbreon still a bit of a lame excuse for a lack of a fight
@@interdimensionalgoober8769 In my head canon Hornet was supposed to be the protector. But since she was observing the knight and knew what it was doing, she let it be. @@loveless8241 I mean that makes sense.

Nah he looked back at the player and thought “heh fuk you mate, you gonna rot down here”
@@rockCity777 The Pale King was blinded by his own hubris. He only accepted reality after he had already left the world, and died shortly thereafter.

In fact, unlike Pantheons 1-4, the final Pantheon doesn't begin with you selecting the option "enter." It begins with you selecting the option "ascend."
Through your conquest, the Godseekers Focus on you.

This explains why the Knight didnt notice the bank was just a cardboard. He could see in 3d, but not the "Higher Beings"
Would this make the player the void?
I also think this, ok hear this out, befor the knight adventured into the wild out of hallownest he had a mind and a will, like the other vessels, but he list his mind and will in the wild, until a higher being that probably had no physical body in that real (aka the players) took control over the hollow vessel that couldnt think or act and controled it for it to go to hallownest and defeat the radience, being the true hollow knigth or beating the radience and its variations
@DropkicktheDecepticon cool thanks
Or maybe after collecting so many started to get lazy about where to put them
I was just about to say that lol, i think he is a failed kingsmold
