Hot tip: when i started out with digital art i would take pictures of my traditional art and trace over it to make it digital. You could re-sketch your drawing or just make the lineart immediately

I had that same problem when I first got my tablet during the days of Photoshop 7, now I have the opposite problem when I try to draw traditional art. I ask of myself "how do I use a pencil and pen again? Where is my undo?"

Jason Todd Lol, it depends on what tablet you get. If you get the smaller ones they tend to be cheaper, but if you get the huge ones with a built in computer and a screen those can be REALLY expensive.

My tip i wish i told my younger self earlier:
Proportions are important. Proportioned images are better to see. If the head is turned 3/4 the eyes should be the same height but the one on the side that cant be seen too much is thinner, not smaller.
Know your anatomy. Yes its hard to have a good anatomy when your artstyle doesnt really add up with it, but afterwards, its gonna be really helpful to improve your artstyle.
Use a stabilizer, messy, unstraight (idk the word for that ejdjdjs) and pixely, its really going to be bleh. If the line is stabilized amazingly, the lines will be clean, better and smoother.
Be patient. You cant improve if you want to skip to the part where you just have a good artstyle. Practice your artstyle, shading, shadowing, lighting and coloring base colors. Play with the effects and filters.
You need to know how things look infront, back, sides, bottom, top, literally 360° angle to know the measurements.
Draw everyday. Do several artstyles and see which suits you best. You can have an inconsistent artstyle.
Have a good color palette. Know the primary colors, secondary, the other colors. Know which color compliments a color. For example, baby pink and grey. Its a good color combination. Avoid using too saturated colors, REALLY bright colors except if the art ur doing is like an Arcade, pixel thing (idk what to call it)
Know how the bones work. A body part doesnt always move everywhere. For example, the knee doesnt move 360° so yeah, know how that works.
Know your artstyle. If a certain artstyle doesnt suit u, dont do it. Find a better artstyle. A non artist looking at ur art will notice the artstyle and be like- 🙂, its not THAT enough like, it doesnt suit you. An artist looking at it will notice the artstyle too. Do you tho, find your artstyle too.
Take critics. An artist is never an artist without critics, critical responses are something you can take to do better. For example, you post something on a platform, a comment will say "The hand is kinda unproportioned... Nice art tho", take it as a compliment. Its not something you should be sad about.
Draw everyday to avoid an artblock cuz those suck alot.
I have more but im too lazy-

I've been drawing traditionally for my entire life and only recently I got a digital drawing pad (ones without the screen) to try out digital art.
To my surprise, it was pretty enjoyable at the start even thought I haven't gotten used to the pad itself.
But to be honest my drawing skills just ran away the moment I picked up the pen lmao

Has your traditional suffered because of it?

HOWEVER, traditional sketches alone might already be enough to make me regret not touching the medium since middle school lmao

    Oh, my god. I'm speechless.
Been drawing for about 15 years now. I've had the occasional "Ohhhh!" moments when it came to art style and anatomy skill where there was a sudden leap in the quality of my stuff... but that hasn't happened in years now and I feel like I plateaued so hard with no progression. Everything I draw looks identical even if drawn in a different style entirely, and I felt so set in my ways that I was scared to try anything else.
But this taught me about things I didn't even know existed or know that I'd have really wanted.

For any prospective digital artists out there, listen to the advice on the screenless tablet. I HIGHLY recommend it. I use the Intuos4, and it feels natural after a short time. It's like a computer mouse: you aren't looking at it when you are using it to navigate the screen. Plus, you won't run into calibration issues that I have run into when drawing directly on a screen. If you need practice, I'd recommend using your tablet in place of a mouse when you are navigating your browser and such. It really helps you to connect the motion of the pen and the screen.

One recomendation for those who battle with learning how to use a digital tablet, one thing i did was to use the tablet for everything, and i mean everything, a tablet is basically a replacement for a mouse so i use it to navigate through the internet copy archives, etc, the only thing i didnt do with the tablet is play videogames, this is because a tablet works diferently to a mouse, instead of dragging it through the screen you levitate it over the surface with the surface of the tablet representing the screen to scale, this can take a while to get used to, i personaly did this and in a couple of days i was already able to do some solid drawings and quickly got accostumed to the feel of the tablet, but i havent tested this with no one but myself
Also another recomendation is to keep some drawing pencils and a sketch book nearby and keep practicing tradicional art every now and then, digital and traditional are similar and a lot of the skills and muscle memory are intercheangable, but both also are diferent skills with diferent levels and if you over train yourself in one you can literaly forgot how to do the other, so keep your skills sharp by sometimes doing a drawing in traditional

Tip that I use: when sketching make different sections different colors:e.g: hair =purple, face =orange arm=Red etc.
Make sure to keep them all in one layer and they have to be highly saturated so you don't confuse it with the line art or color blocking layer, lower the opacity on the sketch obviously.
    Hopefully it helps you.

I'm not the best artist, but something that has helped me a lot, while taking a lot more time, but saving a lot of headaches: name your layers. Name them based off of what they are. (I work in Krita) I do a super basic just getting the pose down "pre-sketch", and then I make another layer for my sketch or "revised sketch". I make another layer for my line art, and then under that I create "clipping group". This is pretty much a folder that you can set to have all of your layers clip to the bottom layer (make sure to turn on alpha lock for new layers!). I name each layer within that group, simple things, like "hair", "hair shading", "skin", "extra details", etc. This is a lot easier for me, especially because my work isn't super super detailed like the maker of this video (I'm still kind of an amateur). Thanks for reading this, hope I helped!

I only really have experience with screen-less tablets and I’d say that it does give you good hand-eye coordination, if that’s even the right phrase?
I’m from England I should know words-

I use iPad but from the way it sounds, it does seem to increase hand-eye coordination.

If you're using csp, i also recommend using vector layers for lineart! That way you can transform lines without a loss in quality; i love it!

Do the Crayola marker challenge! I’m a broke artist and I have to use cheap markers so it would be great to see if someone as skilled and refined with markers as you are could create good art with Crayolas. It would also be a good comparison of the two in how they work with the appropriate techniques like using a Pentel water brush and even trying to blend them like you would with Copics

THANK YOU!! So many videos are terrible at teaching beginners how to use these sort of tips and leave me confused and frustrated. This was aclear, easy to understand and shows everything by example and it helped SO much.

I'd combine cliping mask method with the one used by Webang group mask(forgot the exact name), wich is imo more flexible than than cliping mask alone.I tend to use rarely cliping masks, I just prepare the piece with group masks(wich takes a few years xD).
The layers structure would look something like this(for me):
    Group[Shape of all the characters]
    -Group[shape first character]
    --final touches
    --effects
    --light/shadows
    --color
--sketch[I slowly erase it during values stage by merging the layers
    --values
-Group[shape second character] just like above
    --final touches
    --effects
    --light/shadows
    --color
--sketch[I slowly erase it during values stage by merging the layers
    --values
Ofcourse inside the char groups you can make other shape groups for accesories or w/e you want.I would recommend to watch one of Webags videos to actually understand what I'm saying, if you're interested.

@Sterling Archer Hmmm, depends what kind of animation you want to do.
If you wanna go frame by frame animation wich takes "a bit of time", you definetly need to start with basic rules of drawing, after you're decent enough with these, go ahead and break the rules.
I, will try to start learning more after effects for animation, wich is not frame by frame for animated scenes.Wich is "simpler" than frame by frame.Plus Spine or Dragonbones(free) for character animation.
I asume you wanna do something like a novel? If so prolly the second part makes more sense.Maybe if you throw in there Live2D...
There are many things and decisions that I don't have the answer yet for myself xD
Artschool is a great place to learn the fundamentals, but plenty of artist do think nowadays it's a bit useless. As you can focus from home to learn what you want pretty much for free over youtube.
As of the software itself. If I'm not wrong in Clip Studio Paint you can do animation too, frame by frame animation. Not sure about it tho.
Imo.Just try deciding on what you wanna do.You won't be able to do it all, I learned that the hard way.
Depends on the kind of animation. As a comic artist it wouldn't be hard to learn frame by frame animation, since you draw the same thing multiple times, it's extremly time consuming, but it can get amazing results. If you're interested in frame by frame animation I would recommend watching some videos of:

I have been drawing for 45+ years and I find it is relaxing and it helps with my anxiety. I have just recently started a channel about drawing digitally but I would love to be as good as Laovaan. I love the comments he makes about the fact that there are numerous ways to do the same thing digitally, like drawing a circle and the statement about using different apps and programs. Thanks for the time and don't for a minute believe that you cannot do tutorials, I would just like to see a real time drawing from start to finish to allow me to see the steps used. Anyways thanks for being willing to share your talent.
