Anyone here ever use the iPod touch 5 back in the day? Friend of mine used it as his main driver until 2018- poor soul, not sure how he did it honestly.

It’s an interesting hybrid between the iPhone 4S, with the A5 chipset, and the iPhone 5, with the larger display. It would be a fun A5 device to try and use as a daily driver and just see how far it can go alongside jailbreaking.

If it was released just a year later in 2013, the 5S had the A7 chipset and they could have put the A6 chipset like in the iPhone 5, or at least 1GB of RAM. Either one of those would have significantly helped long term.

Now that title unfortunately goes to the iPad, which isn’t a bad thing in and of itself. I never largely noticed how forgotten by Apple, it’s maker, it was. Could be partly my bad, as I only ever knew its existence through the App Store. I thought it was just an alternative to an iPhone, cell and everything. Now, it’s basically a better iTunes phone that runs iOS. It’s a good music player if you keep it plugged up into your car, or play music and shut the display.

Well, it still plays offline music just fine and I can actually use it with any new bluetooth headphones since the 2nd gen iPod touch does have bluetooth, something that I didn't notice when I first bought it in early 2009.

I've used Spotify for the first time this past year (June 2020- present) I still have my over 7000 song iTunes library, which was mostly CD's I've ripped to my computer since 2006 (yes, I"m 30 and old). While I do enjoy the features of spotify, I've noticed some slight differences in audio volume/quality in downloaded spotify music, and ripped CD files. Spotify just isn't quite as good, and as someone who enjoys actually owning my music, having the "iPod" feature of my iPhone (the original reason I got one in the first place in 2009) it just makes more sense to use my existing iTunes library. I listen to such a small amount of "brand new" music, and when I do it's a specific band I've followed for years and I want to own a physical copy of their music. I'll likely switch back soon.

    • @IndellableHatesHandles
      @IndellableHatesHandles 3 ปีที่แล้ว

I'll always have my CDs. Even if Spotify goes out of business, or I don't like the quality of most downloads. Even if they get destroyed in a disaster, since they're ripped and put on my phone. They'll always be around, and they'll be better quality than streamed music, since they're in FLAC or on a CD. I don't like having to deal with all those problems.

The iPod was cool and one of my first portable gadgets, but as I grew up I never understood the logic of giving them to kids who are "too young" for a smartphone and I figure that probably partly plays into its discontinuation. I see really young kids nowadays with clearly their own phones, as the parents are also holding them. There's always parental controls if necessary and if you just want a media device for your kids to have to play with, a deactivated phone would work mostly the same, though buying an iPhone unlocked is quite expensive.

Apple is so stubborn. There’s no reason they couldn’t improve on the design. A 1TB iPod touch with a more iPod centric iOS, a wider and shorter body with no bezels, Bluetooth syncing with iPhone, flush camera, sleeker WiFi antenna, Touch ID on power button, LCD screen but much brighter.

I got mine for Christmas 2013 as an upgrade for the iPod Touch 4 because being the tech lover I am, I needed iOS 7. Mine is a 32 GB version in space gray. It ran fairly well when I got it obviously. However, I ended up getting an iPhone 5C just a few months later making the iPod sorta obsolete. However, I ended up finding an interesting use for my iPod. Given it had 32 GB as opposed to my 5C's 16 GB, it could hold a lot more video. As a result, the iPod became kinda my primary video recording device, especially for the TV recording I had gotten into. It worked quite well for that. I used it as my big video recording machine until mid 2015 when I got my TV tuner stick. Then it was more reserved for recording things like weather events from there on as the device was getting quite slow at that point after all. Once I got my 6S the following year in 64 GB, I rarely found myself needing the iPod for anything practical afterwards. I still like to get it out sometimes though just to remember that.

I still use one of these sometimes when I need to record audio in front of a camera I can just put this in my pocket and have the earpods wired in and have it record my voice, that's really all I use it for though.

I still have mine too but mine doesn't work anymore either (I unfortunately dropped it into the toilet and that fried it). Great memories for me too. I loved that device. It'd be nice to get it fixed just for the memories but I wouldn't use it on a daily basis even if I did get it fixed. Maybe one of these days, I'll get it fixed just for the memories (if it's fixable that is. It's been water damaged since 2016).

    I just realized something:
All versions of iOS that are divisible by 3 have devices that stopped on that version.
    iOS 3: iPhone 2G
    iOS 6: iPhone 3GS
iOS 9: iPad Mini 1, iPhone 4S, iPad 2, iPad 3, iPod Touch 5, etc.
iOS 12: iPad Air 1, iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, etc.
iOS 15: iPad Air 2, iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus, etc.
    iOS 18: ???
    Interesting, isn’t it?

Apple should not let the iPod brand die. For kids and teens, a small handheld iOS device is much needed. iPads are too big to carry around everywhere. I think they might actually breath life into the iPod brand. Not every parent gives their kids an iPhone.

I've used my 5th gen iPod Touch for a good 6 years. Yeah, the OS is a little slow, but it's not really that bad. The real major pain is starting up cold. 50 seconds! For a moment you start thinking the device has hung. Thankfully wake is 1~2 seconds. I was cheap and got a 16GB... and kind of regretted it. I do have a large music library and this iPod could hold only 20% of it. And less if I want room for podcasts. So, I trimmed down to a set of "top favorites" in music and just use it for podcast listening at night. The browser? SUCKS! iOS 9.3.5 doesn't have adequate app support for other browsers. You're stuck with an old version of Safari that is woefully incompatible with an enormous number of websites.
