      @Maximilian a bond only gives you memby for 14 days.
      But yea, loads of the content is locked behind the membership. That is only a problem though if you can't see yourself ever paying the €6-€10 monthly in the future, for a game you love. The free-to-play version of the game will undoubtedly give you enough content so that you can see if you like the game or not, so there's no risk involved (other than time I guess).

    • @totem95

      From my recent return to rs3 experience coupled with my rs2 and osrs experience, I would say that a mass loot interface is a nice QoL in rs3 but would be redundant in osrs. The value of loot vastly differ in terms of gains, inventory space and time.

      The graphics looked hilariously bad even in 2001 when I started playing. You played it because it was in a browser, could run on any potato PC with internet and was free to play, a rarity for quality games in those days. Most of the boys in my year discovered it on school computers, likely their first MMO experience ever which makes a huge impact.

      @mercster 3 ปีที่แล้ว +52

      Yeah for the longest time I didn't get it. I'm 43 years old and did not play it in my earlier days. Once every few years I'd run it and be like "Who can play this trash?" But then one day I played it, and started doing a few quests and learned how "things to do/accomplish" stack so nicely... and I finally understood it! I think someone just needs to be in the right mood, and the right frame of mind, to get over that initial hump. But once they do, they'll be a fan for life!

    • @W_0_W
      @W_0_W 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@mercster I see that you are fascinated by this game, which of course is great! I think that enchanting the player and conveying the atmosphere of a fairy-tale world is the main task of any fantasy game developer. But in truth, this falling in love sometimes makes us blind to serious problems. Personally, I just don't see any point in doing anything in this game, because everything in it is bought and sold for real money. In the first stages, 1000 coins should be a huge amount for you. You are given quests like "buy a bucket" and even this assumes that you have no money at all and you need to earn the first 5 coins somewhere and understand how everything works. But if you are a millionaire, everything in the game becomes just nonsense. You don't need to develop skills and spend days in mines, you don't need to craft anything. You just go and buy everything in any quantity.

    • @mercster
      @mercster 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @@W_0_W I think it is incredibly stupid to not play a game because others are doing what you think is "cheating". Especially in Runescape, which is mostly a solo game. Yes you can work with others, join a clan, etc.. but most of the action is self-directed and solo. Who cares if someone else bought their fancy gear? If your only goal in playing a video game is to be better/look cooler than other folks, there are games for that. Runescape isn't one of them. Have a good day.

    One of my favorite aspects of OSRS (and RS as well) is how interconnected everything is. What I often do is make a goal, say, "I want to do X late-ish game quest, what do I need?", and the checklist and flowchart of possible things to make my chances better is endless. Rn I'm trainning my ranged so I can use a better weapon against Tz-Tok-Jad to get a fire cape so I can be *slightly* better in a fight, and I'm training it through Slayer, bringing me to every corner of the world. Truly a one-of-a-kind game.

      Honestly SOTE isn't really that bad. The puzzles are pretty straightforward, and my main complaint is that the puzzles, far from being impossible without a guide, are closer to being kind of too easy, just a bit time consuming. I think the MEP2 light puzzle is actually far harder, and that part is the only part of any of the quests that I used a guide for, personally.
      I think people feel SOTE needs a guide because of the trauma of MEP2, expecting it to be even worse.

    • @JoshStobart
      @JoshStobart 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Clawdragoons agreed. SOTE has none of the trap and monster damage causing you to have to manage your supplies effectively that make MEP2 so horrifyingly awful. Sure, there are a few agility checks but realistically you can get by on just a few bits of food. No biggie.
      Also, the moon logic of some of the other quests in the game makes these puzzles look well designed and straightforward. And often answers are hidden in a way where you need to be aware of the environment you are in, lore, remembered information and a basic understanding of tools in the game.
      In other words, quests are often mysteries that require you to pay attention at every stage to figure out the solution.
      They are really fun :)

    Moved to FFXIV earlier this year, but RS has a very special place in my heart, and the toxic fanbase and fabulous clan members are in my heart as well, corrupting my views of every other MMO fanbase that logs out and wastes XP like a bunch of noobs.

    I played RS back in 2007, heck I played back before the Grand Exchange. Was never any good, was only like 13 at the time, but I had a lot of fun. I kept playing on and off through RS3, the last thing I did was get 85 mining (after YEARS of grinding), and then a month later they introduced the mining rework making all of that grinding pointless and now RS3 is just a dungeoneering simulator.
    I just started into OSRS a week or two ago and am right back to the nostalgia of being 13 again, only this time with more direction, and it was your videos talking about it that made me come back. 4-5 mins in and I think one key thing to mention (dunno if you mention it later) is the gameplay is rooted largely in the much older text based adventure videogames and stuff like DnD, this is very apparent if you turn the "Game" tab onto standard instead of filtered as almost every action you take is essentially narrated back to you as if you were playing a text based fantasy adventure, it's also why the combat is so simple and is basically just an invisible dice roll and stat check

    • @etherealpenguin8683
      @etherealpenguin8683 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      And I think this is an important distinction because it's what separates it from a lot of other mmorpgs, it's arguably the game that modernized old rpg's, it took the old formula and said "how do we turn a text adventure into a living breathing world with visuals and audio" where as almost all other mmorpgs are thinking "how do we make an mmorpg/copy a successful one"

    • @etherealpenguin8683
      @etherealpenguin8683 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The degree of freedom and intractability in the game as well is what really sells it for me, sure you can't customize everything and build things etc, it's not a sandbox, but there is enough random stuff in the game and ways to interact with things that you can create your own stories, ya know, the whole roleplaying part of an mmorpg, for example I created my own quest within the game using items and interactions my friend hadn't seen before, taking them to odd places, even using spells they'd never seen before to add visual flare, and the crazy thing is even though this game is old af I wouldn't be able to come close to replicating that quest in any other mmorpg I've played because nothing has come close to this level of roleplaying freedom.

    This game is fantastic. Just avoid the players on Reddit, they LOVE to complain about everything and if you spend too long there you’ll find yourself following drama that you don’t even care about. Enjoy the game, take a couple suggestions, new players are welcomed with open arms because veteran players are aware of the reality that some people do leave for good and we want to keep the game afloat.
    Btw I have maybe 30 hours in osrs and I started playing around 2008-2009 so I never played during the “good ole days” and easily transitioned to RuneScape3 without a problem.

People shouldn't turn away because of the graphics or simple looking gameplay. Also I love toxic pvpers they remind me of every other game with pvp.

      For stuff to do with friends you could ask them to do mini games. Even maxed accounts haven’t finished their diary’s (like additional challenges for rewards) meaning they need to grind a lot of barbarian assault. Soul wars is another great mini game for pvp practive well also getting points to level other skills. Pest control also works but there is different level boats.

    being a person who's 1st mmo ever attempted being runescape and having a love for it over the years, multiple returns: here's my take on should you play OSRS in 2021: Yes! and No!
    This game requires alot of grinding to reach the top levels, so dont expect to play for a month and be max level it's not going to happen, not for the average player, nor for a veteran.
    (This is written to those who couldn't make up their mind on should I play OSRS after the video so please give the video a watch 1st before reading as the video creator has put alot of work and covers things I won't. Don't forget to like so more players can see this comment and don't forget to like to video to get it out to more people also as the video creator has made a great video discussing the game.)
    This game however if you don't mind the grind is great and has plenty of content and out of all MMO's I've every played OSRS has the best quest reward system of any MMO, I've ever seen or enjoyed. The quests you complete mean something, whether it's earning more quest points to unlock even more quests, or earning rewards which add a massive boost to your character, through unlocking new weapons or armor types, or general quality of life upgrades for your character.
    The satisfaction for reaching a milestone in a skill is very rewarding and satisfactory as it makes you feel like you've achieved something whether it's that shiny new tier of weapon or whether it's that brand new axe for helping you raise woodcutting faster and chopping better trees for your skilling needs or simply money making.
    This game has a lot of enjoyable content in the f2p version but you will need to be a member to experience the full game, and the amount you get access to is huge in comparison to f2p however you DO NOT NEED to pay for membership with real money, you can earn a bond in game (lasts 14 days) through in game money (gold) and there are hundreds of videos of youtubers starting on fresh lvl 3 accounts and earning a bond in less than a day through free to play means, not to mention Jagex (Runescapes creators) do a lot of free membership deals through twitch prime or amazon prime, you can play this game without spending a penny as long as your willing to grind for the bond but with membership this becomes much easier to do due to the vast array of content you have at your disposable and the multitude of new money making opportunities so you can just keep earning enough to earn a bond yourself.
    However if your a person who works strict hours and doesn't have much time to play games at all this game is not for you, in the early levels you level quickly sure, but when you hit that roughly 60/99 mark you will be grinding for hours for these level increases, some skills level faster than others, for example cooking and fire making is one of the easiest 99's so isn't too bad, but if you want to get something like hunter or alchemy to 99, you will need to sink a lot of time and in game money (gold) to level these quickly.
    That being said skills in this game do matter, every skill has a feeling of importance, better mage skill will unlock high alchemy allowing you to turn that drop you found into gold without having to go back and sell, better rune crafting will allow you to make better runes for magic casting and in higher quantities per unit of essence, some quests will require 20 magic, 30 rune crafting and will unlock better places or a new area you can level in or get access to new things, here's what some of the skill do.
    Attack (accuracy), Strength (high damage per hit) Defence (less chance of being hit and damage taken) Range (ranged damage and accuracy) Magic (magic damage and new spells), Agility (faster run stamina regen and access to new shortcuts around the map) Prayer (a drainable counter that can be refilled at alters that can increase your stats by a %, higher prayer level the longer you can keep active and more you get access to) Cooking (cook fish or other foods without burning which in turn allow you to eat to heal, better the fish higher level you need to prevent burning and how much that fish will heal) Fletching (Able to turn logs from woodcutting into ranged tools from arrows, to thrown weapons or bows and crossbows) Smiting (melee weapons and armors) thats just a few examples these all have their own uses and are required for quests as well as the rest of the skills but each one has a use in the world of OSRS, there isn't a single skill that's useless and pointless to raise as they unlock something new to use or access to a quest and are used in said quest to complete it.
    However if you wish to do an iron man playthrough as a new player I heavily advise not to do so, it requires you to have extensive in game knowledge of where to get drops, or best places to farm (you will need to use guides) .The only way to get the better pieces of gear to use you will have to grind for hours or days as some of the late game stuff has a 1/500 or in some cases 1/3000 drop chance which will mean you may kill up to 3000 of an enemy to get that drop and may get it early or may get unlucky and go over this count there have been players who have records for driest luck streak on some of these items by thousands over and the higher stronger enemies take much longer and higher skill levels to kill faster and effectively as each attack is a dice roll on the damage it can do and higher skill means higher chance for a higher roll but not guaranteed for example i could have 99 strength which means i can hit the highest number possible with each melee weapon but i could still hit a 1 because of the dice roll in the background but i do have a chance to hit that 40 or 50 that someone who's say 80 strength couldn't possibly hit without top gear with strength bonuses and potions which as an iron man due to not being able to trade players you will have to grind and farm each of these for yourself and wont have access to that higher tier gear as you will have to farm this yourself also as well as having the stats requirement to even fight the monsters for it.
    All in all if you have the time and don't mind grinding this game is brilliant, you can easily just stick on a show and click on trees to level woodcutting and grind passively or sit there glued to the screen and do it, it's up to you, but if you don't have the time, you will not enjoy this game or be able to get anywhere in this game, without a extremely long amount of time passing and being as in order to 99 everything ( if you choose to) you will already have a long amount of time passing until your done for example slayer which is the longest skill in the game to 99 has great advantages to level as it unlock new monsters to kill with some of the best drops in the game can take up to 400-500 hours to hit 99 and this a skill you can level alongside your combat skills such as attack, defence, strength, ranged and magic while getting them to 99 while making lots of money but still if you can only play say 3 hours a day and you may or may not want to sit there everyday you play strictly levelling slayer it will take months upon months to hit that 99 your aiming for because many players aren't going to sit there for 400-500 hours focusing on 1 skill doing nothing else in game when there are a multitude of other skills to level that you may want to do for making money or doing certain quests to unlock the best gear or locations. So all in all it will take around 1-2 years to 99 everything depending how much you want to sit there and play for and how much time your willing to spend or even longer if you only have that tiny timeframe to play a game.
    In regards to membership many players may wish to play for a few months and take a break but if you lose your membership you wont have access to your membership gear, you will still have it but you wont be able to use it and membership gives more bank spaces to the player to store things and if you've played for months on members you likely wont have any f2p spaces left in your bank to store your unusable membership gear so you will need to either buy membership again or buy a bond assuming you took a break with enough gold or a bond sat in your bank already to use. As even with membership gear on you will kick or punch everything and get none of the bonuses and if you can't store your membership gear and say your inventory is full you wont be able to take anything our of your bank or store it so you wont be able to use anything that is f2p usable in order to earn enough of that sweet gold to buy another bond, so you will be forced to buy membership again or have to toss away some of those membership items which can be worth a lot of money and you wont want to do because you wont be able to get it back as it will be destroyed upon tossing.
    These are a few tad bits and important things about the game I feel should be addressed to any new player that are important to know if your interested in OSRS, if the video didn't give you enough insight to make up your mind give this a read, should help you. Please Like this so the message is seen by more people so more people can get an understanding if the video didn't help them decide.

    This is perfectly true.
    I'm a veteran in this game and played since 2006. I think never in my life have I played a more amazing and enjoying MMO like Runescape. This game simply won't ever die, because of how it's built: so many MMOs these days have forced daily/weekly grind that punish you for missing out a day... this game on the other hand, you can take a break a year or even more and when you come back, you just start again where you left off... it's by far one of the best games in this genre.
    Sure, for newer players, this game does look outdated, it looks boring, the combat looks dull.... but I really can just suggest to screw that feelings, take a deep breath and try it for yourself. You will never ever find any MMO that can give you such a unique experience.
    And no, just like Josh said.... YOU decide how you want to play and progress in this game, not the game decides for you.
    Also... trust me when I tell you... the combat does look simplistic and very easy, however if you do reach the hardest content of the game, it's probably one of the most challenging and complex things I've ever witnessed in a MMO.

  • @wastingtime6211

    For anyone whos never played any form of RS:
    This game will be hard to get into. You will have to look at the wiki (the best in all gaming, but still), and youtube constantly to get enough knowledge for you to figure out what you want to do.
    That being said, it's because you have the unfathomable level of freedom why you have to put the legwork in to study. It doesn't really play like an MMO, it's more of a charming RPG with people you can chat with, centered around accomplishing goals whether arbitrary or concrete.
    I still don't think there exists a video out there that *really* captivates why this game is so amazing. It's just like an unreal amount of information to tell you, but at the same time for a normal player it just feels like knowing how to ride a bike, the alphabet, tying your shoe, etc. But to try to explain all of that at once just makes it too hard to retain attention.
    This game's weakest point is the fact that it is incredibly hard to play this game without prior experience or in-game guides/friends. I promise you can preserve and learn how to enjoy the wiki/youtube/ your own exploring which means trying to find other players to give advice.
    It sounds funny, but if you get past this wall it's the best and most unique game potentially in the world. To the point it becomes a life changing decision to play RS, i.e. any free time you have will become this game.

    You mentioned FFXIV in one part. It's funny I had an itch to play an mmo and so I chose that one but it just didn't quite scratch the itch. So I started playing Runescape, made a group hardcore Ironman account and I am having a blast. Thank God for Runescape.

    Gotta say he is totally correct when he says it's a long term game with short term things to do. Been playing since before OSRS was even the current game. Used to be worse graphics on a JavaScript website window. Still haven't maxed an account. Of course I also lost my old account info through the years and it wouldn't have mattered for OSRS anyway as it is a different server. Still waiting on sea farring

    I started playing runescape in 2019. Started with rs3 then switched to OSRS. Extremely Grindy but I enjoy it. I don’t sweat but the quests are interesting and it’s just a dope ass game. The game feels extremely alive to me and I’ve made lots of friends playing.

      it pretty much is 09-10 runescape with reskinned items, you have the HD client, nex items, rapier/fang which are balanced chaotics, dungeoneering is in the form of raids and gauntlet, korasi is being added soon. its 09 without the power creep

    Im always off and on with this game. Ive had my account for about 6-8 years. I made an account after finding out the 2008 version i played as a kid was back. (I quit after it became newer runescape) i was such a noob again no idea what to do, started doing things i did as a kid. Just woodcutting and fishing and selling the stuff for money. After a while of just randomly leveling skills and buying new armor sets i started taking it seriously. Researching ways to make money leveling skill requirements for late game unlocks. A few years later im doing plenty of late game things, killing bosses, really good money makers, and unlocking untradeables. I think back on the whole journey very fondly. This game is a true fantasy adventure, its super goofy and doesnt take itself too seriously but, the whole thing was a journey, a slow crawl turning my guy into a real adventurer, a hero! Man, such good memories, i dont know what im gonna do when i max my account, i guess ill think about it when i get there. Until then im still on my journey!

    Every equippable item is iconic in it's own way. Almost everyone knows almost every armor piece and weapon in the game even though there are a lot.
    A dragon dagger has its unique special attack everyone knows, godswords are these massive blades, and black dragonhide is what pures wear. Pures mean you focus on only a single combat skill in order to stay low level but do massive damage for example, "twinks". All the other thousands of items have their own place in the skilling/questing world. Oldschool runescape has the best skilling and crafting of any game by a huge marigin. As Josh said, you can play the game by only skilling, the content is endless. Every skill goes from 1-99 and you'll find something new to craft almost every level. You feel like your character is becoming stronger, you can mine and farm gold or now, you can make strength potions etc. and all of these things matter a LOT in the game's economy. Every skill is mecessary for the harmony, so everyone is important, no matter how you want to play.
    Cheers!

    i would argue that the only truly interactive and fun content is reserved (with the exception of a few mid tier quests) for near end game - raids, REAL pvp, challenging bossing, drops worth slayer-ing for, etc.
