Wizard 101 is a card game, but its actually quite a good card game. Shame about the extreme amount of monetization and premium content it tricks you into trying to access.
Thanks to my Patreon and Twitch subs who make these videos possible.

My little brother played this and when he'd hit a paywall area, he'd complain to our Dad about it and, since he wouldn't shut up about it, our Dad paid for it. I complained and said "He can get that stuff for FREE if he could do those Tests and score well. He just has to be smarter."
Well, when it came time for College, I complained to my Dad that I needed tuition for Med School.
He told me I could get in for FREE if I had scored well on more tests and were smarter.

btw the timer thing is intentionally designed that way because players can strategically stall out the turn timer to let friends join the battle at certain points, so it always needs to have a timer even when its just you so that players can't just stall forever and wait for their allies to flee and return to boss fights indefinitely.

Even as a 30+ year old, every time I played, I felt like I was doing something with my deck and character that no one else was doing, even when compared to someone operating within the same school as me. A comment on the fizzle mechanic. While annoying, it's actually not the worst thing in the world. Each card tells you to odds of how likely it will cast and if you fail a spell, you keep the pips, meaning you have more pips on the next turn to cast a potentially stronger spell instead. It introduces a bit of random chance into the game and helps balance the fire and storm schools high damage for the early game, making their playstyles more risky while being stronger/faster at fights.

    • @Zeroshiki
      @Zeroshiki 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

The difference in quality between voice lines is due to the fact that the voice lines were all added in different eras of the game. Originally very few characters were voice acted. Mostly ambrose and gamma for the tutorial and a few more main story characters. Most other voice lines including malastaire in the tutorial were added fairly recently in the timescale of updates. Hence them having nearly 10 year newer audio quality.

you have to earn energy for pets, fishing, and gardening, or wait/level-up,
mounts which are better usually cost crowns, but you can get some of the high speed mounts by paying gold or fishing/from drops,
stitching gear (swap appearance and stats between gear) costs crowns, jewel socketing costs crowns, some of the better houses (You can visit people owning the houses for free and make the same use of them) or house items cost crowns,
2nd roll chests cost money except on free chest events
expanding backpacks, character slots, and banks costs crowns,
and lastly bundles (ignoring crowns pets because almost no-one uses them); also, you could earn all of these with the trivias, and they have double pet xp, no energy fishing, double reagents events, KI gives out codes that anyone can use especially around Christmas, one for crowns and the rest mostly for items. and so-on too so it's not so bad. That's pretty much all there is when it comes to micro-transactions, it's a fair amount, but most of it is not needed at all.

The game has some pay to win elements, and a lot of them can be gotten easier by paying crowns, but I really would appreciate some corrections in the video when it comes to wrong information. If Kingsisle got a change in leads and the lead game designer, the game would be much better off, along with if they provided some more ways of earning stuff in game with an exorbitant time investment, they're really trying to please their investors and it's whales who continue this and actually keep Kingsisle afloat (they've already filed for bankruptcy before). The good thing is, they did a free membership for 12 days event during Christmas season, alongside the crowns code and everything, many people in Kingsisle are still trying to reach out to players and do something good.

@@Souls_p_ as someone who is almost level 120 life, I can say that grind isn't really that bad, you can progress through the game mostly on bazaar gear, or if you want better gear, mount olympus gear at level 30 will carry you to level 60 where you can grind waterworks for the level 60 gear that will carry you to level 100 gear at darkmoor, don't really know any grind spots past that but since its been a while since I played last there is probably new gear for max level. Crafted spells for the most part are unnecessary, only spell i'd say is pretty good to head is the knight for death schools, but most of those special crafted spells are useful for pvp, and if you're like me and not interested in pvp then you don't have to worry about it, like you said mounts can be gotten with gold, generic mount speed is 40% there is crown ones that are 50% or have a stat bonus but the bonus is minor not really big impact. The crowns gear again not even needed or even that good unless you plan on playing pvp. One thing I think kingsisle should make clear is that this game is not free, the free parts is closer to a demo of the game to get you to buy a membership or crowns to continue with the story.

The thing I always hated most about it is that gear/card/pet drops are always random, and thus a large proportion of your time has to be taken up by grinding for all the good drops. 16:15 I actually couldn't believe he complained about this being a bad mechanic just because he didn't understand it. You should complain about it not being explained to you, not the mechanic itself. Each card literally has the percentage chance it will hit written directly on it. This relates back to the point he made earlier about how it's a GOOD and interesting thing that this card game allows for damage to be randomized, such as a spell dealing between 40-50 damage, and how it can let you try a spell that MIGHT kill an enemy, or use one that definitely will but lose that card for later rounds. This is the exact same principle, but you complain about it? You can choose to play a card that can deal high damage but has a higher chance of fizzling, storm cards are a good example of this, or you could play a card that might not do as much but has a higher chance to hit. For an analysis this in-depth I'm pretty disappointed you chose to criticize the mechanic without fully understanding it instead of criticizing the fact that the game didn't give you the resources to understand it. Honestly, who's first thought when a spell fizzles is "this must be completely random and unexplainable so I'm going to complain about it".

There is an idea that things for kids don't need to be high quality because they're "easy to please", so a lot of new entertainment for children is garbage (mobile games, reaction videos), just things made by people looking to make a profit rather than a good product, whereas Wizard 101 was good, obviously it wasn't without faults and the heavy monetization was a bit predatory, but I still think it's much better than a lot of new things. The thing about w101 is, the f2p part is basically just an extensive tutorial. The membership is basically required to play the actual game, since the main quest line goes out of the starting area after like 5 quests. Ignoring that, the packs and everything else in the premium shop is decent and people definitely buy it, but it is by no means necessary. So I'd say the biggest flaw of the game is marketing itself as free, since it's basically a ten dollar subscription. On the flipside, I personally know how much fun I had as a kid just playing everything in the free zone, spending hours on the minigames and just running around the map looking for Easter eggs. And if anybody decides they want to play the game and see the whole story through, just go in expecting to get the membership. Plus, KingIsle is pretty smart in pricing the whole thing, they have a family option, so multiple accounts can get a discounted membership and they also do discounts pretty often, including making the whole first world free.

I took up this game about 6 weeks ago, in part because of this video, in part because Steam pushes it pretty aggressively on my store page. I'm also drawn to free to play games (which this definitely isn't) and thought I would try for free and see if I wanted to continue.
When I started, Arc 1 (the first five worlds!) was free, and I got to the second world before that freebie ended, but by then had decided on a membership anyway. One thing I agree on is that they try to monitize way too early. Halfway through world 1 is just nuts, and they need to give more before forcing that decision to be a member.
Currently Wizard City, world 1, is free, and I think they are nearing the point where they'll offer something more free permanently, whether that is world 1, or arc 1. I think world 1 is a fine place to force the decision. Where it was when you made this video was super inappropriate. It makes perfect sense at the transition from world 1 to world 2 though. Arc 1 would be insanely good to offer for free. I just barely finished Arc 1 after 6 weeks, though I wasn't rushing the game and enjoy playing the weekly events even more than doing the normal quest progression.
I haven't purchased any crowns yet, and I don't see that it is required at all, though you can get faster progression if you do pay more.
All in all, I highly recommend giving this game a try to nearly anyone, and thank you for your honest feelings about the game in this video!

there is an aspect you missed >_< you have to use premium currency to transmogrify your gear to look like another piece of gear as well.
so about the crowns locking area. the game started out with the ability to buy areas or sub. when you buy an area it is open forever to you even when you are not subbed. the alternate way of the subscription is why this model can work.
granted up until they released card packs it was a pretty fair system cost per world (i mean you expect the next world to cost more to support development anyways). however when card packs became overwhelmingly produced THAT is when the system became a bit toxic. as the cost per world went waaaaaaaay up on new produced worlds.
they ruined a healthy system with greed really. then they got even greedier. they punished crowns players who buy areas and dont sub. subscription players received an increase of about 33% to their bag space and basic attic/housing space. then they monetized bag upgrade to make your backpack bigger. then they also increased the amount of junk that drops per fight to make you need to empty your bag more often. yes you heard me right JUNK items increased making good items decrease. now i understand making house space a purchase since about 70% of the houses had lower furniture and storage space and you would only do this to your favorite 2ish houses. but purposefully creating a need for player bag issues was a stupid and
unforgivable issue i will forever hold against them.
when wizard101 had to join up to a different company to stay sailing i felt really sad. the previous team cared about the player. now it's cash shop is a way to rob impulsive people. still an amazing game but put a chain and lock on your wallet when it comes to large spending in the cash shop please.

He ABSOLUTELY should have looked so much further into this… Dude didn’t even get to see any big boss cheats, and some of his complaints were bonkers. Like.. this game is very pay to win/play heavy at points, but… I’ve never bought treasure cards or reagents from the crowns store XDD not to mention fizzling, which is a mechanic that technically also works in pokemon by a move “missing” or “failing”, stronger moves will miss by a certain percent, just like the cards do!! And the fact that he didn’t understand it, and thought it was just a bad mechanic overall blew my mind man… if 7 year old me could understand it and work with it, and now nearly 19 year old me rarely ever has to worry about fizzles on even my storm wizard, I would think this guy could sorta grasp it as well, since… This game is made for kids, and fizzling is irritating, but it’s part of the game!! It’s part of the wonder of having an online, digital card game!! He even praised the damage rolling mechanic on certain cards… If he knew what the story was up to now, I think he would lose it realizing how complicated the mechanics REALLY became, and how this is barely a children’s game at this point… I think just the Mellori storyline with Grandmother Raven and Grandfather Spider would make him go wild.

Fizzling is part of the strategy. The higher damage spells have less accuracy, meaning they fizzle more, so you have to decide between a riskier attack that would kill, or a less risky attack that wouldn't kill but still take the damage lower. You can improve your accuracy by going to the Bazaar in Olde Town and buying the gear with your desired stats, you don't need to pay real money for it.

You draw to 7 every turn and can discard cards from your hand to dig deeper into your deck to find the spells you need each turn. As well you can discard cards to draw treasure cards to use on demand. The 30 seconds is generous, but it is definitely necessary. Especially when you start getting more spells unlocked and having more options each turn. We found out that I could still teleport to him in places I hadn't bought, so whenever I got to a new area that I couldn't go to, he would just walk through the pay wall and then I'd join him on the other side without paying a cent. I got through a good chunk of the game that way, all the way up to the Asia inspired area with the ninja pigs. There was no restrictions on level or anything either. I remember I was just in the desert area, and I could join him in the end game areas. He powerleveled me like crazy.

    1. There is a percentage chance of failure listed on the card. Pokemon and other RPGs have accuracy stats.
    2. There is free chat, just press enter. The game tells you unless you entered your age as a child.
    3. You can endlessly get free reagents around the world. You can get free treasure cards by grinding the same mobs and feeding your pet gear you don't want.
    4. There ia a very clear zoom-out button on the map that shows all area connections...
    5. Pets do have unique mechanics, heck entire questlines center around them if you had finished the first world...
    6. The undead everywhere are because of the main villain you met in the opening.
    7. You can have multiple characters and you have a shared bank. Give the good rolls to your wizard of the correct school. 😅

As a person who played the game for many years, I wouldn't say this is a pay to win, but rather a pay to play. Most of the stuff in the crown's shop is unecessary and doesn't really impact gameplay much (plus you can get some items like certain mounts (not too flashy ones though) and houses with in-game money). Most of the good sets can be achieved by farming certain dungeons or through crafting. However, I may add that the shop contains "packs" that kind of work like loot-boxes, which can be pretty dangerous (specially in a game aimed for kids). It's probably the sketchiest system to get money implemented in the game.
Apart from that, it's absolutely true that the pay-walls are a pain in the ass and things can get REALLY expensive if you want to reach endgame content. It's also true that soloing bosses gets extremely complicated as the game progresses, specially for certain classes. As a storm wizard (who are pretty much glass-cannons) I would get destroyed really easily, and my success in battle fully depended on an rng based healing spell that could either save you or be absolute trash, which was frustrating lol.
Overall, I think it's a game I would still enjoy as an adult despite its flaws. The card system is really good, and bosses later into the game use different "tricks" that force you to change the way you play to spice things up. The game makes you seek new stratergies just to beat them specifically, which keeps the battle system from becoming too stagnant and predictable. Apart from that, you can indeed customize your deck quite a lot with cards from other classes using points you get throughout the game, which is pretty nice. In addition, PVPing is really enjoyable and challenging, and every class plays a unique and important role in battle (I didn't think it was too unbalanced when I used to play), house decoration is nice and pet leveling/breeding (despite being time consuming and pretty repetitive) is kinda fun as well (imo)
Fun fact: There was a time where the spanish server had no pay-walls until Celestia (lvl 50 or so), and I haven't experienced a more lively community since then. Nevertheless, pay-walls from the beginnig of the game were introduced in like 2013 or so, and most of the players completely vanished. Glad to see the english server is doing so well, though :).

As someone who played from 2009 on american server, ever since lvl 50 when dragon spyre officially released its been easy to clear and solo the entire games pve content as long as u used training points for satyr heal and ice tower shield even if you were storm. U dont need to pay to win for anything in wiz until may cast wands and op crown gear came out in later years. All you needed was a good pvp pet and a decent wand for whatever was good at the time which was extremely easy to obtain (and still is) and you were set. Any purchases past that point are just for convenience. Even leveling a pet and hatching is extremely easy. Gold has always been easy to farm since
The membership has been required on NA server since lvl 11-12 from the very beginning since I played in 2009. Aside from the cost of membership you really dont need to spend anything unless you care about try harding in pvp and even then it’s extremely easy to be a warlord through various means / strats / puppet abusing back in the day. Wiz was a very fun game with a fun community from 50-70 level cap. After that it changed in pretty drastic ways from time to time.

As a person who has played this game since 2012 and is currently level 105, it's honestly pay to play, not pay to win. After paying membership, you really don't need to crown shop to improve your gear. You can just grind for it in the actual game, like any good MMO. Even the membership card gear you can buy at a gamestop is still weaker compared to grindable boss gear. I will say, the game has it's flaws (especially how misleading the trailers are compared to the actual graphics of the game) but the game isn't bad. The story and writing are good, there is even some dialog that pokes fun of how ridiculous some of it's story is, which I personally enjoy. But for a game that works on a really old engine, it's still fun to watch the animation and walk through the environments. I only wish the paywalls weren't on Wizard City, it scares new players off when it gets to the good bits, especially in Cyclops Alley (hint hint). If they were to remove the locked area paywalls and leave Wizard City completely free to play, this game would have millions of more players instantly.
Any cons I have equate to what Josh already explained in the video.
Would I recommend this? Sure, if you're willing to spend membership (I suggest buy 1 month to see what it offers later on before paying more into it).
Edit: To add, ever since they were bought by MGI, the dev team have made necessary and positive changes to the game and are more beginner friendly to help engage new players. At this point, the crown shop is really for cosmetics and extra packs. Most good gear is grindable in the game.
Edit 2: EVERY QUEST UP TO LEVEL 50 IS COMPLETELY FREE!!

Literally the only problem in Wizard101 is over-monetisation. They should make the first arc 3 (first 5 worlds) free. There is 160 levels and to have a paywall hit at level 8 is very bad and it sways many people away from the game. If they made the first arc free, there would be much more players who would start playing and when they would get to about level 35 or something many of them would want to continue playing. There is an insane amount of things that you only unlock once you start getting to a higher level. You can't really know if you really wanna throw money at an online if you've only been playing it for like 30 minutes.
I didn't buy membership for about 3-4 years after starting and it was still fun when I was young cause the community was amazing and it wasn't boring even without questing. I don't regret buying membership many times because there really is so much to do in this game once you start farming stuff and making a good pet and farming gold and gear, unlocking new worlds, etc. The only thing I maybe regret buying is crowns. There is many useful things you can get with crowns like potions, unlocking maybe a certain dungeon so you can farm gear without membership, unlocking sockets and stitching. But things such as packs, unlocking random game areas, buying mounts and similar things are a complete scam cause you can literally get all of those things for free with a bit of farming. So as I said, I don't regret buying membership because I fell in love with the game and I very much enjoy playing it and I'd rather pay 10$ (or 5 with discount) and play it a shit ton and have fun for that month than play some new 60$ game that I play through and then I never play it again.
Also you did get a lot of things wrong in the video like for example treasure cards can also drop, pet snacks you don't have to buy with real money, pet happiness isn't important etc. but I mean you can't really get everything right after playing for like an hours and then stopping. And fyi Wizard101 is far from a pay 2 win game. Yes, you have to pay to continue quest, but every piece of gear is farmed, not bought. There are good pieces of gear from the crown shop obviously, but as I said, you can have just as good stats as people who buy everything with farming the gear.

The game has a comforting art style. It’s very nostalgic, although I never played the game in its prime. It is outdated though. Male wizards can’t even wear the color pink? Lol.
The game could have a revival if the developers focus more on what the community wants and stop putting everything behind a micro-transaction. It’s good for what it is. A lot of Wiz TH-camrs make the game sound so unappealing but you have to try it for yourself. I love it.

I wasn’t able to pay past the pay wall as a kid but as an adult I can afford the yearly membership and you should easily be able to beat it within that time. Past the paywall is so much more fun qualities and you also get free pets. A lot of the content in the video isn’t accurate like fizzing. This guy didn’t do a lot of quests that explain the mechanics.

Note, the item stays get way more complicated in late game, and for the mount sellout issue
originally during the 1st mount update it was only horses/brooms/(wings maybe?)
With dwindling pop over the years, ig they had to start 1 upping themselves with the mounts
For the complaint with solo 30s battle timer, if you're in a battle or smth and you're 1 turn from death, if they removed the solo time limit, you could just call a fried/log in on an alt and tp to your main account to save progress and have you TP back after death it way to easily.

Btw pet play is utilized at higher levels in the game.. so learning it at your level (an introductory level) is important because then you’re not dealing with learning it later on when you need it. So there is a plan there also.
