So cool that you did this! On their first American tour, our little midwestern bar band opened for them and Foreigner, when they played our town. They were all so nice; Derek was just a hoot, and had the lowest snare drum I've ever seen. Funny thing: even though they were just breaking with "Help Is On the Way" at the time, and Foreigner was the headliner (got to turn the mains all the way up to "10" and use the "star" lights), they totally blew Foreigner (not to mention us) off the stage! They were so tight, and almost seemed to be reading each others' minds, with the way that they flowed. I still stay in touch with Graham and Glenn, and it's absolutely criminal that they're stuck in Australia as "Birtles Shorrock Goble", and a bunch of posers is allowed to market themselves around the world as "LRB"!

Possibly the greatest vocal band in ever. Well at least Glenn Frey said so. They used to spend an entire weekend getting one verse vocally right. My mate was rehearsing in the studio next to them one weekend in London. He was blown away. Eventually their brains new exactly what to sing at all times. They did an acapella version on tv one night. Holy Cow. LRB were well known for a perfect onstage sound. Didn't matter where you walked on stage their foldbacks were perfect.

Fil, you continue to impress me. I'm 73 and I did a lot of studio work for Capitol Records back in the 70's and 80's. Little River Band was always a favorite of mine (not my label). Their music was simple but done with such individual style. I'm a natural Alto and we learned to compensate for the sound because the was no vocal correction in those days. I love what you do, please continue, I have passed it on to all my younger friends.

The sound check when live thing is one of the reasons Queen rocked Live Aid. They brought their own sound engineers and did a full check before starting. You can easily find it on any extended cut. Most bands just accepted the production's staff, Queen were coming off a tour and didn't mess around.

I had the joy of seeing Little River Band in August 1978 as part of an all day outdoor stadium show that included Heart as the headliner. They were fantastic and their harmonies were absolutely glorious. I can't imagine the difficulty in trying to sound check for an outdoor show as it can be challenging enough in many indoor venues, but the sound crew pulled it off with aplomb.
I've played in a Celtic Rock band for the past 20 years and I can remember some really difficult rooms we played. The worst has to be a show in a curling rink, where the ceiling was a series of heavy wooden beams supporting the roof, each set about 10 feet apart. Each beam echoed back at us but, because they were spaced apart, the echoes arrived in separate waves so even our monitors were useless from the horrendous noise of the collective sound waves. Picture twenty people playing the same song and you're hearing each one, but each one started the song a half second after the previous one. Our sound guy was have conniptions trying to fix it. He never did. An awful show but it gives us a lot of laughs after the fact

In addition to the great harmonies from Glenn, Graham, Beeb and Wayne, they've got one of the best guitar players in the world, Stephen Housden. He's still making music today - check out his band King of Kudos, and his songs with Paula Gomez.

They were a great band. I saw them open for Little Feat at Winterland in the late 1970's. One of the best concerts I have ever seen.

Saw these guys live a few times with the original line up & like so many other Aus bands & performers at that time they were amazing. They all had to be strong performing live from the beginning, that was what the Aus music scene was all about at that time. So many live venues now gone.

I used to know the guy who wrote that song, David Briggs. He played in another band I’d go see in the early 80’s. I also know one of the other members, once they became LRB.

That’s about the 4th comment re not knowing they are Australian. Us here in Aus thought you all knew. I guess singing re accents sometimes sounds the same I’ve noticed.

Fil, if you want an interesting conversation about those years and the process of making that music, you should contact Graeham and do an interview. He's a fascinating man with so much knowledge about music. A national treasure.
