    Two funny stories about Tommy. Supposedly Steve Vai said that Tommy was the best two guitarists he knew. And at one concert Tommy asked if there were any guitarists in the audience and a little voice piped up, “Not anymore!”

    Mid nineties saw him live in a small country town in NSW Albury Wodonga(Australia). We got his autograph after the show and headed home(Amazing show btw), we stopped at our local pizza place for some food and it was around midnight by now. It was late at night hardly a sole around and who walks in! Tommy and two of his roadies looking for a bite. We chatted and told him we'd been to his concert earlier and we shook hands, about 15 minutes later the pizza store owner now realizing who Tommy was brought out an old guitar from the back of the store, the next 45 minutes were INCREDIBLE! The store was closed by now, just a handful of us with Tommy on an old guitar eating pizza, what a night what a guy! Hi again Tommy if you happen to read this, will never forget that night!

      I have a similar story, not involving me though.. I was up in Karratha area working about 12 years ago and one of the painters I was working with told me this story. He was drinking in a small hotel, Whim Creek, population 32, middle of nowhere, on the way to Port Headland. Mark Knoffler walks in on the way through to Perth and has a drink. They have a chat about what a dump Port Headland is and Mark gets a guitar out and gives an impromptu concert to about 10 people. I wish I was there.

    Tommy is without a doubt a superb guitarist. I used to know him quite well in the 1970s in Sydney when he played in a band called Goldrush with his brother Phil. Now deceased, Phil was every bit as good as Tommy. Thank you for sharing this. I last saw his one-man show a few years ago. He is a true guitar virtuoso who can play any form of music. That guitar is more like a part of his body than a distinct musical instrument. The joy on your face as you watched him was wonderful.

      Phil stood in front of me for 30 minutes and watched me play at Tamworth in 2007. The next day I went to a supermarket and he was setting up on a portable stage. He looked and me and said "yeah, I can play like Al Di Meola too", not that I ever really took any notice of Al. When I approached him at the end of his performance he just kept turning his back on me. My opinion of Phil is not all that great.

    Just the fact that Tommy Emmanuel is completely self taught is amazing. Roy Buchannan was my benchmark guitarist from when I saw him at the Crossroads Supper Club in Bladensburg, Maryland in 1971 until I saw Tommy at the Colonial Theater in Phoenixville, Pennsylvania in 2008. A storm blew out the power in the city and the whole show had to be done acoustically and spotted with flashlights. It was the first time I heard Tommy play "Somewhere Over the Rainbow": an orchestral piece done with one guitar. Tears were in my eyes. "Why is a man of this caliber playing at a venue that seats less than 300?" I asked myself. Because he loves to bring joy and enjoyment to people everywhere he can, was the answer I got from the many You Tube videos I watched afterwards. Roy was eclipsed ... dethroned ... replaced. Tommy has enthusiasm for what he plays and how he plays it; exquisite flourishes that are also exactly what is needed to produce the sound he wants; professionalism, congeniality and cooperation with everyone with whom he plays; advanced and impeccable left- and right-hand technique; seemingly unlimited improvisational ability; Hendrix-like control over the voice of his guitar; ability to play any genre; no limits as to the brand or model of guitar he can play; a decent singing voice that he controls as well as he does his guitar; good stage presence and connection with his audiences; respect for everyone; gives credit where credit is due; hasn't expressed nor displayed any social or drug problems; loves his family and friends; declares his intent to continue to develop his guitar-playing; plays with people of all ages; and encourages those who show even the least inclination to join in with him. A benchmark if there ever was one. Please react to more of his pieces (Initiation, Stevie's Blues, Heartbreak Hotel, Amazing Grace, Blue Moon, Just An Old-Fashioned Love Song). Thanks!

      I admit, this guy is jaw droppingly good. But I can't dethrown my favorite of all time, Roy Buchanan. Roy's playing was so deep and soulful, and jaw droppingly amazing as well. The show you mention with Tommy sounds like it was a one-of-a-kind experience-- probably the highlight of your musical experience during your lifetime? I felt similarly when I saw Buckethead for the first time- not quite as dramatic as your experience but a damn fine musical memory. I will give you one thing though; Tommy was much more interactive with the audience than Roy- Grade A on that front! Don't know where i was going with this, other than to point out that I think you have great taste, but disagree on who the king is. Can't really go wrong either way though. Great comment:) Hey Fil... how bout a Roy Buchanan analysis from Austin City Limits show in 76'?

      Tommy is a very generous guy but I don't think that's why he's playing to 300. Virtuoso solo instrumental music just isn't what fills venues. To get a big crowd you need an image, a band, singing etc.

    @slangelands4255 3 ปีที่แล้ว +12

    One of the greatest musicians, ever, and I have listened to a lot of virtuosi musicians. Everything he does is in service of the composition. The flashiness of the technique is never only for the sake of bravura, but also adds to the wit of the piece. I hear only exuberance and joy. Indeed Tommy is a Mozart.

Definitely an old school genius. I can play Classical Gas and it’s one of those pieces that can sound stale very quickly, so you have to keep juggling new bits in and out every time you play it to keep it fresh and “alive”! Tommy does an excellent job of that. He’s very quirky and puts a lot of effort into his work. He keeps you guessing and keeps it fresh. He doesn’t relax behind his achievements. He is “on the ball” and knows how to hold a crowds attention. Great choice, good video Fil!

    He plays with apparent abandon while keeping his technique reigned in. That intro lick.... He's one of the best players and the TONE of his guitar.... one of the best acoustic sounds I've ever heard.
    I'm watching and commenting.. 4:04 mark and I haven't heard the word "vibrato" yet. HEHHEHEHEHE I KNOW it's coming. maybe not since this is acoustic but I gotta hear it. just once!
    Tommy has perfect hands for guitar, damn him. HAHAHA If I had his hands.... I'd be arrested for murder. no, if I had his hands... man... I could be more badass!
    Excellent observation about people who basically are self-taught vs GIT grads. I want to say that as the amount of teaching increases, the amount of originality decreases but perhaps not ALWAYS. But people will naturally be more unique when they do their own thing rather than just copying. Influences will always be there but when you reach a point of greatness, those influences are like little spices that pop up here and there and the main thing is yourself. Tommy here is in the MOMENT and he isn't thinking about anything except the next notes coming up and how much he's going to relish them. That's a huge difference between great players and average ones. I think the great players just love to play MORE than the rest. I could be wrong.

    I am smiling from ear to ear, too. Watching you react to Tommy's playing is awesome. I recently had the pleasure of seeing Tommy in concert in Orlando, FL. I was lucky enough to snag front row seats; it was a fantastic evening with Tommy. If he comes near my area again next year; you can bet I will return to enjoy his awesome musical talent. Thanks for the great review, Phil. Yeah, I watched this again!

    Tommy gets more out of a guitar than anyone I can think of. The percussive accents, the way he mutes and stops the notes, so many different strumming/picking styles I can't count; the bending, slapping, tickling to submission. His left hand must be a programmed machine...it's automatic. Very physical, impeccable, unreal technical mechanics. Check out his right hand positions: when he gets to the delicate and soft parts he is directly over the soundhole. When he goes all-out aggro fortissimo W.F.O. he's almost ON TOP OF THE BRIDGE. He's everywhere, even up on the fretboard. He can get 50 sounds out of 1 chord. I bet he goes through a pack of guitars a day.

      @quickdeuce 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      In some respects I might agree but IMHO Roy made playing look like work, Tommy's playing appears to be effortless, as well we seldom see Roy playing fingerstyle where as Tommy takes fingerstyle to levels few have acieved. Now, when I say few I'm seeing perhaps 20 to 30 players we see in the entertainment business who play fingerstyle.

I'm very familiar with the Mason Williams original and that only made it more fun to hear (and see!) how Mr. Emmanuel made it his own. Just stunning. You don't have to be a musician to follow your commentary, it's clear and accessible, just increasing how enjoyable the piece is. Thankyouthankyouthankyou.

    I had the privilege of seeing him live at a relatively small venue in New York City last year. What you don’t fully get from videos of him is just how incredibly relaxed he is when he plays. Relaxation is so important in so many physical endeavors. Skiing, tennis, martial arts, golf, and it seems, playing guitar. He’s not holding any tension in his upper body, he can move around and walk naturally while playing even technically insane material. He rarely even glances at the neck, it’s mastery of an instrument on an entirely new level. The way he produces perfect harmonics at will, as if it’s the easiest thing in the world, and as you pointed out keeping his thumb fixed while changing chords, I mean he makes all this look easy while it’s crushingly difficult. He’s not just an Australian National treasure he’s a World treasure. He stands alone on the Mount Olympus of the Guitar world.

    If you've ever listened to him relate his journey to being a guitar master, he learned in a unique fashion. He and his brother Phil learned to play songs they heard on the radio. Phil would play lead and Tommy would play rhythm. He says he didn't know the rhythm player and the bass player were two different people on separate instruments so he learned how to do both simultaneously. He is an amazing entertainer and musician. I love it when people enjoy what they do and he clearly does.

    Thank you for this analysis, Fil. Tommy is astonishing. I believe I suggested you do a piece on him a while back. I saw Segovia in 1971 and he moved me to tears. Tommy is the only other guitarist that hit me as hard. I knew I was witnessing true greatness when I saw him. Not only that, but Tommy is a true gentleman, very generous with his time. He's known for many spontaneous interactions with fans and devoting his post show time to signing autographs and sharing conversations. What a marvelous musician and human being. Currently my favorite guitarist. Thanks again.

    I've read comments on Tommy's videos, people complaining about him "just showing off," or "ruining the song." Come one man, get your ego, your pride, your jealousy out of the way and enjoy his mastery. For me, the true mastery of the guitar is someone who can play acoustic. Unlike the electric, you can't be lazy because YOU have to produce all the sounds coming from it with precision and strength. He's one of a kind.

      He's gifted enough to have the right to show off, but that's not what he's doing. He's enjoying and living the music too much to just be showing off. Plus from what I've seen of how he's acted around other people, he seems very humble and gracious with people that are obviously lesser guitarists. So anyone complaining about that just doesn't know him well enough.

    I stumbled across Tommy Emmanuel just last night & was up all night binge watching him. His playing is amazing & his energy is infectious. There is a youtube clip titled "Welcome to Berklee (Tommy Emmanuel's evolution)", where he is on stage, telling the crowd exactly HOW his particular style was formed. It's a very interesting story made even more interesting by his storytelling technique. Guitar players beware, though - During his story, he mentions "It wasn't until I was SIX that I learned....". Yeah. It seems he & his brother were born with guitars in their hands. Another great clip to see is "Tommy Emmanuel - Blue Moon", where he makes his guitar play every instrument that is in a band - all at the same time.....and he has loads of fun doing it. I can't help but smile when I watch him play. He always looks like he enjoys playing more than anything else in the world, and that's how life should be. We should all be so lucky!

    I think Tommy Emmanuel is one of the best, if not the best, guitarists on the planet. His technique, timing and pure joy while playing the instrument shines through. I have one of his live albums and it sounds like two guitarists playing at times. Tommy can shred on a steel string acoustic with heavy strings (a 12 high E string) better than most rock shredders playing electric guitars with light gauge strings. Tommy is an absolute monster on the guitar, albeit a friendly and very gracious one. Thanks for featuring Tommy!!! As far as acoustic players go, please consider doing a analysis video on the amazing duo Rodrigo Y Gabriela.
