      My dad's chainsaw runs on the common 50:1 ratio mixed gasoline. I added about 2/3 tablespoon of blended cooking oil to the gas tank when he wasn't looking. Don't tell him. ;D Cutting down dead trees and the chainsaw smelled like motorcross dirtbike exhaust. Potent. More visible smoke but nowhere near a night and day difference.

      Just one(1) correction point. The people from Belgium invented the fries, that is the famously called French Fries. And in the area, Germany, Belgium, Luxembourg, Netherlands, all give out a big scoop of Mayonaise, not ketchup, with an order of fries. Can’t remember who started Telling the French got tagged with the fries. Great video, thanks for sharing.

    This takes me back to high school auto shop circa 1981. I still remember the instructor beginning a classroom module with a simple question ... "what is lubrication ?" ... nobody was even close to being correct, it was a long but informative discussion. At the most basic level It's the cooling and separation of moving parts. That's it. No surprise to me the vegetable oil worked well. Funny how some nuggets of wisdom and knowledge stick with you for life while I couldn't tell you what I ate yesterday.

    An interesting implication of this is that if you ever got access to a diesel engine to do experiments on, that means you could both run and lubricate the engine with vegetable oil.

      I wonder if this would cause a runaway engine? I noticed that there was a lot of residue left on the cylinder and head. If there’s enough blow by from the vegetable oil I’d imagine you might have an issue

    • @strebblo123
      @strebblo123 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Another vote for this - I was very excited to see a veg oil test on your channel - all the years of people telling me that veg oil is a poor lubricant compared to diesel in my fuel injection pump seem to be disproved. Maybe you could also test diesel alongside veg oil and regular 10w/30-40-50 oil etc?
      Well done and thanks again :)

    • @angels_gaming8309
      @angels_gaming8309 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      But the issue is if the diesel decides to run away, the only way to stop it is to restrict air flow to the intake as diesels dont have butterfly valves like a gas engine does.

    • @personperson9591
      @personperson9591 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree, I think oftentimes we underestimate organic (in the traditional sense) food-grade oils, they obviously work fairly well in the tool world for many purposes. I mean, I wouldn't swap out a vehicles motor oil for vegetable oil, there are so many modifiers added even if it matched lubricity it'd turn to gunk rapidly, but as we begin our slow drift away from petroleum we'll still need "oil" for all sorts of moving parts. Heck, instead of trying to refine corn into a weak gas alternative they should put the research into better organically-derived oils for lubrication. I mean, castor and linseed oils are still preferred in several instances over synthetics, I'm sure with a little R&D they could probably replace a lot of lubricants with less toxic and renewable lubricants.

      You _can_ run a Diesel engine on Renewable Lubricants Inc. Oil (made with vegetable oil as its base oil so it's non toxic) and then run the Diesel on Biodiesel. Vegan Diesel!

    • @justinw1765
      @justinw1765 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@101Volts The problem is that after awhile, especially if there is blow by happening (where a small amount of fuel gets in the oil), then the oil, no matter what it's base is, will become more toxic to the environment.
      In order for it to remain non, or much less, toxic, it would have to be a newer engine in very good shape, and you would need to change the oil more quickly.

      @ILessThan3ToJizz420 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Regardless of my misinformation, which I'm honestly surprised given all the times I've heard it, Ethylene Glycol does have lubricity properties. Like a thin oil. So it's no surprise why I and so many people have believed that. I think it would still be a good thing to test just for fun.

    • @dubsydubs5234
      @dubsydubs5234 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Most if not all waterpumps (not checked every waterpump) have a seal then a hole then the sealed bearings, the hole is so if the seal leaks coolant doesn't get to the bearing. The seal gets lubed with the coolant/antifreeze/anticorrosion, if the car sits for years often the shaft the seal sits on corrodes causing the seal to leak. Coolant will eventually get into the sealed bearing which destroys it pretty quick.

    I sold a new Toro to a Church that had a briggs engine and they put olive oil in it and yup it blew up good. I had the briggs rep look at it and he wouldnt replace the engine and the Paster swore up and down that they put oil in the unit. At the time I was doing work for Ammoco BP now . So I sent some of the oil to the refinery to have a test done with their mass spectrometer. Those guys lauged so hard when I told them the story they didn't charge me for the test because I was doing it for the church. Then the next time the briggs rep came by I gave him the the print out from the test he faxed it to Briggs and they bought the engine for the chuch because I had proved that they did put oil in the unit. It worked fine for one summer until they decided to change the oil.

      There are vegetable based oils that could do very well as compared to olive oil. In Terry Dyson's extensive testing and analysis of 226 motor oils, a vegetable based one made by a company called Renewable Lubricants did extremely well and ranked 3rd highest in the straight out of the bottle category (he tested some oil and extra additive combos as well).
      Hence, vegetable based oil could do very well if the right kind, rightly processed, and has the right additives (as pretty much all oils made and sold now, have various additives to help improve their performance, longevity, temp stability, oxidation levels, etc).

    Great video with a practical engine test instead of some lab comparison! Thank you! Some suggestions, if you ever re-do it:
    1. before-and-after comparisons could show pictures after running it with vegetable oil vs. picture after running it with mineral oil. The vegetable oil vs. clean-scrubbed piston crown does not yield much useful information and may make any oil look bad.
    2. Rapeseed oil is the traditional steam engine lubricant so reasonably is the best oil to start with. It has the property of adhering to both wet and dry metals.

    Stage 1 upgrade kit for Predator compared to a bone stock Predator. I recently did a stage 1 upgrade to my mud motor. I can tell it breathes easier with the upgrades. I know the EPA chokes these poor engines down and leans them out so much it's surprising that they run. I'd love to see a torture test comparing a bone stock Predator to a simple stage 1 Predator
    Many of us building these mud motors are afraid to build too much, but the bone stock motor often run too lean. After sure long runs they won't crank. It'd be nice to have some kind of raw data like your torture test. Thanks!

    There's a report by the Navy Research Lab from 1942 called P-1954 "Sabotage Agents for Use in Lubricants and Fuels". They tried mixing a bunch of things (drying oils, resins, corrosives), including vegetable oil, with gasoline and motor oil and running 24-hour tests. They didn't find anything that would do irreparable damage but a bunch of things they tried would gum up the engine so that it wouldn't start again after cooling and a few things that could cause the engine to seize after several hours.

    In my country some motorcycle rider use cooking palm oil mix with 1/3 turbo diesel engine oil for drag racing, cooking oil viscosity is quite thin and lubes as good as 5w30 eo, motorcycle with wet clutch need a thicker oil to avoid clutch slipping, so to get the best lube without going for higher viscosity oil they came up with their own recipe its kinda weird but it works.

      Vegetable oil in a 2 stroke is a bad idea. I would only do that if my life depended on it. Vegetable oil cannot burn, or even vaporize completely at gasoline engine internal temperatures. It will leave vegetable gunk on absolutely everything in the motor. With proper oil later it should clean out, but maybe not before scuffing and scoring the living daylights out of that motor.

      Castor oil is used in RC Nitro applications, but those little 2 strokers are designed very differently from your chain saw motor. They do not use piston rings, and the castor wax improves compression as a result, whereas in a larger 2-stroke motor with piston rings you'll lose compression from fouling the rings.

      in its liquid state its extremely thin too!
      You could warm it up in a container filled and kept separated by it being in another container with hot water so that its fully liquid. Then pour it in and give it a try. but I dont think it would be anywhere near as good as vegetable oil or canola oil.
      its superrrrr thin and runny as soon as it becomes liquid.

    I was an elevator mechanic by trade...40 years of it. Toward the end of my career some companies switched their hydraulic oil to a bio degradable vegetable based fluid. (BIG selling point and VERY expensive) The oil stayed in the 80 tp 100 degree area and....being biodegradable... there was all kinds of odd looking things that grew in that oil! floating around! I had it tested and never received a straight answer......maybe an engine would keep it hot enough to kill off the nasties....or we hope so

      Not for long, one of the main causes of bearing failures on old two stroke GM diesels was fuel dilution of the crankcase oil, GM engines had the fuel lines internal to the valve covers, any fuel leaks went into the oil pan.
      Diesel fuel is very similar to Kerosene (Jet Fuel) it's a great solvent.

      Back in the 30s-50s, this wasn't uncommon to do for a few minutes in order to clean engines out every so often; the old oil gunked up considerably. Maybe I'm mistaking it with kerosene, though.

    I had a 1964 chevy and it burned 1 qt of oil in 35 miles, to work and back. lots of smoke. One day I put Lestoil to possibly clean the sludge out and stop some of the oil burning. I had the sweetest smelling car on the road. Ran it with Lestoil for a hundred miles and drained it out. Put Gulf 40 wt in and it didn't help. It was fun to do though. The Lestoil barely drained through the drain plug. Cleaned a lot of sludge out. Rebuilt the engine shortly after and it was very clean in that crankcase.
