    I have 75 feet of track and cork roadbed to paint before I lay it on the new layout. I'll be using my airbrush for these tasks. I have a quart can of grey primer I plan on shooting through the airbrush to paint the cork roadbed as it will be better painted grey to match the ballast I'm planning on using. I'll have to thin it with lacquer thinner 'cause it's a lacquer based primer. I'll use my other airbrush to paint the rails on the track with a nice rust colored acrylic paint. My rust color is called Coffee with Cream. Then I'll mask off the rails with a piece of cardboard and spray the ties a nice tie brown. I think you have more control with an airbrush than with a rattle can. On my old layout I painted each tie a different shade of brown and it took forever. Cheers from eastern TN

      You definitely get more control with an airbrush. I do it this way because you can do a large section really quickly. I have done some sections where I painted individual ties. You can also do this method and paint a few ties darker or lighter. Thanks for watching!

    Nice technique Robert. I've never used the vaseline on the rails, I always found the paint came off easily enough without it. (And I hate that greasy feeling. LOL)

    • @FlyingCrow
      @FlyingCrow  ปีที่แล้ว

      I always find myself waiting too long so the paint is harder to get off. This is the technique for lazy people. LOL

      Robert , you did not glue your track , using rail spikes only correct

    Your results look fantastic. But one gentle suggestion:
    On heavily-trafficed main lines, the rail sides and the adjacent ties and ballast have rust stains - both brownish ferrous oxide and pinkish FERRIC oxide. The stains typically extend a couple of inches outward from the rails. Coming back as a last step, after ballasting, and applying some additional rust staining might enhance your final appearance even more.
    Thanks for sharing your approach.

    Your weathering and realism to the tracks are well done. An observation, not a criticism is the nail heads holding the track in place, they seem very noticeable.

    • @FlyingCrow
      @FlyingCrow  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You're correct. I don't glue my track which is why it is nailed. I need to figure out a better way to do that. I appreciate the comment.

    Thanks for sharing...... instead of using that slop on vasiline on the rail tops use chap-stick instead. Just rub a long line on. Easy clean up just rub it off.

    • @FlyingCrow
      @FlyingCrow  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Model Master raw umber. It's no longer available unless you can find someone that still has some in stock. Any brand of raw umber will work, but I prefer and oil based when painting the metal rails.

    Nice job, but why not use rust colored paint to paint the rails?

    • @FlyingCrow
      @FlyingCrow  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I find it is too stark to just paint them, plus the powders seem to give it a duller look than just straight paint. It just ends up with that nice brown color with a hint of orange in it that rail tends to have when you use the weathering powder over the top of the paint. Also, it gives some variation in the color which is the number one goal in weathering. It is probably just one of those things that is a preference to my eye.
