If you dont feed yer snails calcium, they will actually outgrow their shells and bascally bascally explode. I had that happen to an old snail i got years ago.

To add calcium and magnesium to the set up, add crushed egg shell. 2-3 eggs worth should do it.

    • @TheMurlocKeeper
      @TheMurlocKeeper 5 ปีที่แล้ว +34

      How crushed are we talking?
Like, small pieces for them to chew on...or powder?
If the former, wondering if they'd enjoy a small cuttle shell? `(or a piece of a bought one from a pet shop if you can't find your own on a beach)
I have some powdered eggshell from when I used to have chickens. I'd save the shells, wash and dry them, then dump them all in a blender until powdered. I'd add this to their feed occassionally.
I'm gonna assume the former though...cos that just makes more sense.
Was just asking to confirm this. :D

@@TheMurlocKeeper The grain size of your egg shell can vary depending on how quickly you need them to be 'used' in their environment, Bigger pieces would get slower release, finer grains would release quicker. Cuttle shell would work but they seem to be quicker than egg shells.

TheMurlocKeeper I rinse eggshells to get rid of the protein layer inside it and then crush them with the end of a rolling pin to the size large gravel grains. Then I would place it in pantiehose and put it in the filter. If I were him I would float the pantyhose on top of the terrarium until the snails look normal again

Someone probably mentioned this but if you get cuttle bone (like birds use for their beaks) & stick small pieces into the sand it will assist the snails with the calcium they need to keep their shells in great shape! At least that’s one idea & I don’t wanna go through comments but wanted to mention that.. I have a ton of Marimo moss balls & would love to attempt this project if I found the right container.. the tree kind of reminds me of a bonsai... love it.. I love the pink rams horn shells with the red body & think they would make a cool color addition to your project! They are also some other colors including a beautiful light blue & of course they would not grow too big for the container..... gotta get on your IG! Love what you do.. jen

I live in Alaska, where we have little to no sunlight for about six months of the year, so I've been researching plants I might be able to successfully keep over winter. I wouldn't do shrimp unless you have at least 1.5-2 gallons of water and even then you're pushing it. You might try nerite snails if you want something more interesting to look at, but they get (relatively) big so they might muck up your sense of scale. They don't grow super fast though, so if you have an aguarium you can raise some baby nerites (if you can find any) in your jar then move them to the aquarium when they outgrow it. Good luck, have fun, and remember your pets' needs come first.

You mention the balancing act of balancing critters and plants, could you do a series of video's where you make a small 10/20 liter aquascape with shrimp and balance it over time? Im curious what a balance would look like.

Just a curious question does it matter that when spraying new water in that is it’s pressurized? Or is that just what you do by habit?

I would leave tap water out overnight cause it has calcium in it.
Also do you clean the tube before you put that in your mouth?

You are such an inspiration with your amazing yet simple ideas!
I am yet to make this, but it will remain on my "to do" list in the back of my head, lol!
Just like many ideas I have, it all takes effort and money to get all the bits of.
    One day maybe.... :D

Really great build here. I think the minimalist design goes a long way. Complete newbie question here but, in general what kind of water do you use in your projects? Distilled? I heard you mention de-chlorinated water. Do you filter this yourself?

Looks great! I've also notice my moss balls that are not in aquariums are greener.

Nice! No problem about the shorter video. Looks like you had some copepods living in there before the water change. Awesome! 😃🌿💦👍
