I haven't considered getting any, but after watching your video I think I might just have to find some. I'm half Japanese and think I heard of giving these as gifts, which is so amazing, thanks so much Hannah for sharing this video, it was so much fun to learn about them, and now adding them to my plant list. I love the bowl yours is in, such a cute skull that fits the vibe of the Marimo balls.
Hahaha! How adorable! Like little pets! I'd never heard of them before! I love moss & keep pots of them outside, but these are such a vivid green! Other than the color, they remind me of creatures in a Star Trek episode - "The Trouble With Tribbles!"
You could stick Googly Eyes on them haha

I recently ordered three moss balls because I love plants, yet have the tendency to kill them. So, I'm really hoping to keep these little guys alive. Also, since I can keep them in a jar or bowl on my counter, they'll be safe from my cats.

I keep two of my moss balls in the bowl in low light in my living room, and the other one is in my biOrb aquarium now. You can see them in some of my house tours 🌿

I have 4 big moss ball in my 10gal gourami/endlers tank.. temp at 70 in summer and 78 in winter with heater np with clf led 60watts. I love ur setup
Really useful video, I hadn't really thought much about them and recently gave mine a bit of a clean up. The warmer water of the fish tank has made them brown though, but I'm wondering what the world record is for the largest moss ball ? : )
I had mine for awhile in a grouping of glass jars with pebbles and stones on my kitchen counter, then I added them to my heated Betta tanks all but one have done fine. (It's been a year.) The ones I added to my goldfish patio pond have not faired as well, I've lost half.

Very interesting :) I always payed attention to them whenever saw them in plant shops where they sell fish and such but never knew much about them :) I might get a few too if they don't require much light :))

I use these in the sump of my aquarium to pull nitrate from the tank. I throw them in the refugium, I have 10 of them in there and they just tumble around in the current. I have had them for like 15 years, they do a great job of helping get rid of nitrates. I don't see them as pets though or a display for my coffee table.
I also have one in my aquarium now 🌿💚

I keep my tank at 79°F, but I chill them in the fridge for a couple of hours every week after I do a water change.

Ken Clarke I’m actually not sure. Probably a bit of both. Because they are so slow-growing it would take quite some time to get them to a decent enough size to sell them.
Is it okay if its under a lamp? I know the water heats up so i change it but i nearly just got mine !
Gregory Ferrara As far as I know they don’t like bright light or heat so I wouldn’t recommend putting it under a lamp 🌿

I will need to purchase some of the fishbowl and some stones to put at the bottom of the tank to make the moss balls look better and more at home! I really enjoy these videos Hannah! Apparently super fast growth like that is a red flag unfortunately. Make sure you have real marimo algae, and it isn't covered in hair algae or isn't Java moss. If it's the real deal and no hitchhikers, then that's awesome and I aspire to have mine grow that fast

When I first get them, if I want to use tap water, what should i put the moss balls in if I am letting the water sit overnight? Could I use a regular water bottle while I wait for the water to be ready?
I'd leave them in the baggie/jar/cup they come in. Leaving water out overnight doesn't remove a lot of chlorine though, so you're better off with a dechlorinator. If chlorine is not the reason you're letting the water sit, then just use your water. They should be fine.
How can you love plants so much but put plastic plants to your aquarium? Moss balls in an aquarium is dangerous!
