  • On 11-3-23 we caught the Newburgh and South Shore railroad with both their switchers (only 1021 was online, 1019 was along for the ride). Their railroad only crosses one road at grade, E 49th st on the south side of Cleveland. Here they work Charter Steel which appears to be their biggest customer. The other roads they cross are all overpasses and underpasses. They are now owned by OmniTrax but they were an independent railroad which opened for business. They were a of the American Steel and Wire Company (US Steel), The line ran from the company's Central Furnaces (the area roughly bounded today by the Cuyahoga River, Interstate 490, and Broadway Avenue) and ran briefly south before crossing the Cuyahoga River at the now-demolished Jefferson Avenue Bridge. The track ran through the company's plant on the west side of the Cuyahoga, and recrossed the river near the now-demolished Clark Avenue Bridge. The line ran south (passing over Campbell Road and under Harvard Avenue) before turning east. After an at-grade crossing of E. 49th Street and the bridging of E. 71st Street, the tracks turned north at E. 76th Street into the company Newburgh Works, terminating at Aetna Road. American Steel and Wire merged with a number of other steel companies to form U.S. Steel in 1901. U.S. Steel consolidated the NSR with another subsidiary railroad, the Bessemer & Lake Erie Railroad, in 1951. Traffic on the road declined significantly after World War II, and largely ceased when U.S. Steel closed its Cuyahoga Works in 1984. The NSR sold 2.2 miles (3.5 km) of its main line to the Cuyahoga Valley Railway, and then closed on June 30, 1986. In July 1986, the track was sold to the Chicago West Pullman Transportation Co., now known as Omnitrax ( Wikipedia credit )
Also we attracted the attention of the local police force which had to question us briefly. The interaction was friendly as can be heard in the background.

Please, please, please tell us or put a marker on your video in the corner of north, from that we can surmise w to the left e to the right and s opposite just a little arrow pointing North, I love knowing not only where but the directions as I see them from your video, otherwise it's just a confusing story.. Your little channel I've rung the bell since I found it maybe 5 years ago I watched every video since before your youngest was born, I guess that's a better reference and how the two of them interact is cute, You must be proud of them.

Actually, now that I think about it they have several customers. There’s also a little cement transload operation they do at the south end of the yard, the national line and stone operation with the 2 bay rock hoppers, there’s a small factory near the dead end track that gets 3 and 4 bay plastics hoppers, and the yard serves as long term storage for rail car lessors. Also a small chemical transload right by their office. They get a tanker or two and swap them once a month or so once they go empty. There’s also a lumber place to the north of the yard that every once in a blue moon (maybe once a year or two) will take delivery of lumber via box car.

It would be cool to see the little HZRX switcher they keep in the yard switching the stone loads they get from CSX. Or even them interchanging with the CSX main line a bit south of there. They also drop high cube boxcars at gateway recycling. Also there’s now an on site rail car repair spot they do inside the yard at the end of the dead end track right next to 77. Small things like welds and ladder/knuckle replacements.

As always glad to see stuff in the steel mill District and of course those EMD switchers are always a favorite. I do shudder however when I hear that electronic bell as all 64 Milwaukee Road.MP15ACs or delivered like that. Sure wish there was more trackage at the Charter Wire up near there HQ in Saukville WI

I haven’t caught it out yet. At the end of December they still didn’t have a charger wired up for it.
