    Not sure if it has been mentioned yet but a couple of staples could keep the bags closed. Put them on the top part of the bag so that it could be resealed if needed. I agree with you that a heat sealer would be best. Thank you for sharing your processes with us.

    Hey Joe, another great video. My suggestion on the filling station would be to close the trailer doors and tilt the box so the chips slide down to the doors. The smaller chaff pieces will filter to the bottom of the pile, less in the bag and you could easily use a feed scoop, or a used vegetable oil container with the bottom cut out as a scoop. Have a wheelbarrow or office cart style filling station that you can wheel in and out. Also, as you know it’s easier to dry material when the conditions are idea. So stock up supply of filled bags and dry material as much as you can now. That way you can easily handle the demand through the colder and rainy months of the year. At least until you have a facility/shop or equipment that will allow you to dry material inside all year around. Enough of that talk… Love the meet and greet idea. Congratulations on the 20k subscribers milestone. Have a great day! 🪵👍👍😎

    Good morning Joe. Many congratulations on reaching 20,000 subscribers. I told you before, I think this bbq smoking chip idea is awesome. The more I think about it, the more ideas I get on scaling it up. The beautiful thing about this idea is that the cost of scaling this up another level will not be expensive, compared to firewood itself. To go from a chainsaw and splitter to a processor it a big expense at once. It will not be this way with the chips.

    Joe, your philosophy is right just as long as the incidentals do not fool you into a low or no profit situation. The real quest is a positive net income at years end, but often tax planning can make or break a new business. This is why many of us folks give food for thought to those just starting out. I have seen so many guys fooled by underestimating the overhead and assuming they were profitable only to learn later what they did not account for. No you cannot let it stop you, but it sucks to work all year only to learn you made half of what you thought you did. My second business, I paid a good CPA to do my first years tax forms so that I could see the lines he focused on when covering the 1040 IRS form and then learned to do it myself. I also picked his brain on how I could have planned better to minimize taxes. The second year I went in the first of December and had him look at the numbers and suggest what I could do in the last month to lower my tax burden and it was amazing how with proper purchases made in that month or delayed into January how much I could save with proper planning. Basically after that, nearly every purchase was subsidized by low tax burden making my year end net after tax profits much higher. Yes, he cost a lot in fees at the start but even that was a tax write off. And once I understood it I did my own and saved money that way. Even if you do not do your own taxes, it is a good idea to check with the person you use before any major purchase to see how timing can impact your net after tax situation. Speeding up or delaying can have really positive or negative impacts if you don't know.

      Note I did not mention my first attempt at business since what I did not know caused it to fail pretty fast. Yes, most successful businesses have failed at least once and often several times to get where they are. Don't give up, just learn from it.

      Great posts Mark. Thanks for sharing. Like I said, I totally agree with this insight. I can only speak for me and if I had to provide this level of analysis I would have never gotten started. There are just some things I can "feel" about my profit margin to know I'm in good enough shape for me. Tax time is always exciting (lol) and so far my projections are pretty close. My goals are as follows... 1. Keep the house B. Keep gas in the truck C. Don't embarrass my wife and kids. So far so good!!

    Always enjoy your business insight, especially since we share a similar business style. Just a tip for you while watching you fill your woodchip bags. If you were to tape that sled at the correct diameter for your bag it would save you a lot of time filling those bags resulting in more time in a cooler environment quicker. Just a small contribution back for all the ideas you've given me since I started watching your channel.

    • @waynetharp
      @waynetharp 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Disagree with tip...
      He would have to wrestle the bag over it then...The way he is doing it. He over tightens sled so it will easily slip in bag and then taps so it will expand inside the bag.

    • @timbervisions
      @timbervisions 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@waynetharp I was not saying to tape exactly the diameter to barely fit the bag, small enough to slide over easily. It's taller than the bag so he could fill above the bag height and when it pulled it out it would fill the bag correctly.

    Hi Joe, i was thinking that another way to measure the exact volume that you are putting in the bags with the cylinder shape you create with the plastic slider is to use the area mathematical formula, Volume = pie (3.14) x radius squared x height. For example, if the diameter of the inside of the round tube in the bag is 7.6 inches, then the radius is 3.8 inches. Now assuming you fill to a height of 6 inches, you have a volume of V= 3.14 x (3.8" x3.8") 14.4 square inches x 6 inches high = 271.3 cubic inches which is a lot more than the 180cubic inches that you advertise. Now you can use a black marker to make a fill line in the inside of the cylinder shape. If you make a fill line at 4 inches it would represent about 180.4 cubic inches.
    I hope that this helps and that my math is ok.
    Please note that if the bag width folded flat is 12 inches, then in theory the bag would have a circumference of 24 inches, and if divide by pie (3.14) it should give you a diameter of 7.6 inches.

That said, you keep me always thinking and I like that so I am here for every video. At my age I will likely never use your products or even be "up that way" any time soon but I can and will watch and click the like button every time. Good luck on your meet and greet. Wish I could travel there for it, but not with this bug in the air in my age and health.

    Maybe you might want to rethink heat sealing the bags unless you can score the bags to zip off the top. Otherwise your customers will have to somehow cut the opening. Just a thought. Hope everything goes well for you.

    Joe, Make a solar dryer with your trailer. Just put a sheet of clear plastic over the chip filled trailer leaving the dump gate open. Then put a fan at the front of the dump trailer blowing across the chips toward the open trailer gate. Might dry the chips quicker and if it rains the plastic cover keeps the chips dry. You can power the fan with a solar panel or a battery power pack recharged by a solar panel. Check out Jackary Battery power packs with solar panel recharge. Have you tried the plastic drainage pipe on the chipper output chute? Patrick

    Hello Joe, I have been thinking about you wood chip endeavor and what I came up with is what if a person had a stand-alone woodchipper and bought a face cord of say cherry chipped it up, bagged it and sold it. You would not have to have a chainsaw, big log splitter or even a truck. Just hatchet to make the wood smaller. Might be a way for a person to start and not have a lot of money tied up. Thank you and have a great week.

    Good morning Joe, you can make your own heat sealing machine. Just take an old metal level and a clothes iron. Just not your wives iron, trust me I learned the hard way on that one. Put the bag on the level and press it with the iron on its highest setting, and it will seal the bags. Love the videos man, keep up the great work.

    Joe, I think if your cardboard was the same size as your bag then you could put the holes in roughly the same place each time. Who cares I know. But more importantly if there was a square marked out on the board the size of your sticker you could place and align the sticker the same every time.

    If you can get ahold of red alder out there, it's killer wood for smoking fish (salmon trout), it splits super easy abd chips up great. , probably rare in Ohio, it grows in the pnw mainly I believe, but maybe one of your wood suppliers has some. Just a heads up incase you hear that name in the future, it's not a great firewood for heat but ... in alot of people opinion out here it's great for smoked salmon and jerky. Super smokey flavor.
    Just along as the wood is not punky, it turns to Styrofoam very fast if not kept dry in a shed.

    • @ohiowoodburner
      @ohiowoodburner  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Dave. I don't think we have Adler in Ohio though. Not sure

    • @frontyardfirewood
      @frontyardfirewood 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You guys should have a species of it, there is many types. not exactly sure, "smooth alder" or something? Not sure of its smoke quality, or if it's any real relation to red alder out here, but, hickory doesn't grow native in Oregon, but as a tree service guy I come across it 2 times usually someone's grandparents planted it way back long ago.
      So what I'm saying is there is a chance! Just keep red alder in the back of your mind 😆 !
