Thanks for the explanation. Now I know what the traction control button does on my son’s 97 Pontiac Grand Prix
Gawd dang! I need to go mess with that button until I find that nanny mode!
excellent video! While I understand traction control and stability control, really liked how you went down in the weeds on it! and I've also wondered what specifically was going on in "competition mode" (the double press) and now i know! I also didn't know i could hold it down for 5 seconds and disable it completely! Since I drive a vette and not a mustang, I won't be doing that though 😂😂
Thanks for the thorough details!
I've had my C6 for 5 years and thought I knew all the modes but you clarified them in an easy to understand manner!
Thumbs up to ya! 👍🏼
I appreciate that thank you!
I race my Corvettes Z06’s and it’s must to remove when racing. the Z06 and ZR1’s especially have this option to keep novices from killing themselves, however when racing it limits the driver because the car is trying to keep you from wrecking the car. I equate it to sombody else pushing the brake pedal when you’re trying to pull the maximum amount of performance from the car.
Great video as always. It may be worth noting that, even in competition mode, Active Handling is not really completely off. In extreme G, very sharp turns, it will still activate, leading to some anti-hilarity on a road course. Many of us C6 track rats have resorted to disconnecting the steering angle sensor. That leaves ABS working, but really, really, completely, 100% disables Active Handling. Since I still drive my car on the street, I didn't want to just disconnect the sensor, so I wound up wiring a switch inline with the ground wire for that sensor. It works flawlessly. Another helpful TH-camr made a nice video about it. The pinout for that connector has changed a few times over the life of the C6 generation, so, if attempting this modification, make sure that you're switching the correct pin for your car. (This is also necessary when, say, using a dedicated set of track wheels that do not have TPMS sensors mounted.) th-cam.com/video/wKEq-GV7SeI/w-d-xo.html
I appreciate the comment!! In Competition mode active handling is supposed to be reduced - not turned off. I watched that video you linked and he says "Active Handling was fully off". If true and it still intervened (wrongly by the look of it) that is scary. I have heard of a couple of instances of this happening through the years with these almost 20 year old cars. Makes me think some part/component/wire/connection was creating an error leading to this. Not good (downright scary) if when this ever happens - especially to you (or me!) I hope I never have to deal with it on any of my cars and wouldn't blame someone for putting this switch in if it ever were to occur - until a problem was confirmed and FIXED!
I should have said, not in "Competition Mode," but even after holding the button down when the computer says "AH/TC OFF" (Mode 4), It's STILL not completely off, this requiring the switch. (We'll fix this in post.)
@@Toys4Life I mis-typed when I said "Competition Mode" in my earlier comment. I mean the "everything is disabled mode." I've got ~30 track days on my score card. It took a good while before it became clear that the car was interfering rather than saving my butt. The software is amazing; but, some humans are better. Or at least we like to think so. I would still tell anyone new to driving a Corvette (or anything else) on track to leave the hot nanny controls turned on until it becomes an issue. On a C5 or C6, comp mode is the next step up. Only when you really get seriously stupid, like "I have kids but I'm not particularly fond of them"-stupid, should one really turn everything off, with a switch. That said: the behavior isn't a hardware failure. It's by design.
Great Job with the Z06 performance output Graph and explaining the different simultaneous controls and systems reaction. Loved the video 👍👍it adds common sense to a push button!! Hope less experience drivers will gain driving / acceleration time with modes 2-3, before they clear all controls on public roads.
Glad you liked it!
I call my 2011 Corvette. THE SWERVETTE. OH BABY SHE BE HELLA FUN
Thank you, this helped me greatly as a new '07 C6 owner! (+1 new subscriber)
Very thorough explanation and illustrations. As always great video!
Much appreciated 👍
I've had my C6 Z06 in Competition mode since I left the lot, I traded my C7 Z51 for it, never looked back! She is a whole other animal!!
I'd love to hear what you like about the C6 better than the 7 since you've owned both, the more specifics the better!
On the C7, the modes also control throttle sensitivity. Part of my C6 startup is to always put her in competition mode as I don’t want the throttle to stop when I need to make a fast left or right turn.
Good to know, Chevrolet added additional changes & features to each generation that's for sure!
@@Toys4Life and on my c6, all this stuff is tied to the tpms such that if the tire is low or there is no signal, it will restrict the performance of these nannies
@richarddobreny6664 absolutely, a low tire spins at a different rate then it should as it's circumference shrinks a little bit.
I'll sum the video up quickly.
1. No press button: clean pants
2. Push button once: pants sweaty
3. Push twice: pants have shit spot
4. Hold button: pants shidded and need replaced.
Great explanation. Thanks
Glad it was helpful!
Hi do all these modes work on a 2010 base model ? Great video how u explain the modes
Great video
Have you done a video on how to use the paddle shifters on a C6?
Not hard, press forward on 1 of the paddles and pull back on 1 of them. Shift about 3,500 RPM and I shift down depending on my speed. It will shift down for you if you dont want to, you can also throw it back in D if you feel you messed up
helpful video thank you
So when it feels like your throttle is not responsive that is when the active handling is kicking in?
Yep, If the tires are (or were) spinning at the time and you foot is deep down and the traction control/active handling light comes on in the dash - then it is likely over-riding you.
I never touch this button on my Callaway C6 😱
First thing I always do is press that TC button 3 times on my c6. I hate how on the c5, it keeps the "Competitive Driving" on the instrument cluster and you can't go back to your oil temps etc. I drove two C5s and couldn't go back to look at my oil temps when I was in competitive driving mode. Am I doing something wrong with the C5?
You can press the RESET buttom after you are in competitive driving mode. It will clear the message and allow you to display all the thing as normal.
My car only seems to do Traction on and traction off. It glitches sometimes and says “Service active handling system”
Me too! 05? Service active handling almost every time I make my first turn of the day.
Must have an issue with one of the components that make up the system.
@@steventx2 2007 manual coupe
@@Toys4Life yes i hope its an easy fix. Saw one guys video that took out battery and under battery there was a corroded ground wire that he cleaned and it fixed the issue.
This past summer i was cruising on the highway and came up on a construction zone. It narrowed to one lane and they had the orange cones so far over that my drivers side tires were forced onto the rumble strips. Made my dash go crazy and disabled my active handling and traction control. Now everytime i start my car i have 3 or 4 error messages pop up and i cant toggle through the modes. Any ideas on what couldve happened? The extreme vibrations probably wiggled something loose somewhere.
Not really. Any codes with a fully system module scan?
@Toys4Life I haven't had access to a scan tool but im leaning towards a wheel speed sensor failure or loose connection. Car drives fine I just can't stand all the messages and lights everytime I start it up.
If you have a C6, the problem is most likely a loose wiring junction for the steering position sensor, located on the steering column under the dashboard kick panel, driver side. This is a very common problem, and happened to my '06 Vette base 2 or 3 times before I fixed it permanently. The problem is caused by using the steering telescoping function. When telescoping the steering wheel toward the driver repeatedly over time, the junction disconnects slightly because the wiring length feeding the junction is too short. Pull off the panel cover, cram your body under the dashboard, and find the junction. Look for more detail on the internet. Easy and cheap to fix.
@@briankennedy2932 Thanks man, ill take a good look at it this spring when the weather breaks. Hopefully its something just loose or unplugged.
Good stuff!
It doesn’t show how to get into competition mode.
0:33 Press and hold button.
@ Ahhhh… Thanks
I’m here for the nanny
She went home 🏠
@ dang it
They don’t really do anything on a C6. Just marketing cash grab. On the C8 they actually do something. Drive your C6 around the track in the different settings and your times will be the same.
Well certainly if you shut everything off versus the other three modes, there would definitely be a difference... IMO
They make a big difference on my c6, it’s not all for “show”.
It definitely works especially when WOT with both acitve vs Competitive mode WOT.
Zoomers.
