As someone who works out of pro studios, I have to agree with thyrdeye. It's not an easy thing to do something of quality, and unfortunatly, many home studios who are great at making music, don't have the skill sets to actually bring out that music to the next level through the mix and mastering. It not only takes the equipment, it takes a calibrated room aand the know how. Sure you can learn, and it's always welcomed, but it's not as easy as most think.
I totally agree with Raindarsus...I've hired many engineers who have only worked on DAW's, never miked a drum kit etc. I could do a better job then most of them, and I don't consider myself near pro level. It takes experience, technique and a complete understanding of audio physics. Using compression correctly is very complex. A balanced mix with all the frequencies not stepping all over each other is more than tweaking a few knobs. It's just not that easy.

Either your a puppet/ slave to a company or underground and starve. Peoples hearts aren't into it they just follow there favorites and copy them. People who are INDY just won't be slaves. However: They need to take the Gary Numan route, make a smash hit single to fund what they want afterwords ( His grand kids won't be able to spend all that royalty money)
One can. But learning to record mix and master even close to pro sounding recordings is a pretty steep learning curve my friend. If you can, more power to ya! As far as if you are good you'll be found...not so easy, there's so much crap out there it's hard to be found because there's so much to look through. It's hard to stand out without promotion. One reason so much indy stuff is overlooked is that it IS really mediocre and so derivative. And even being really good its quite hard to sell big.
Why blow money on studio? Highly advanced things out now to record at home for cheap. Also: If your looking to be famous, If your good you'll be found. Unless your one of those people who think your unground selling millions of albums ( NOT POSSIBLE ).
