3 Dual Reverb & Delay Pedals (Keeley, Earthquaker, Wampler)

  • A thorough comparison (although not thorough enough, it turned out!) of three of the most popular Reverb / Delay combo pedals on the market at the moment.
    Keeley Electronic Caverns v2
    robertkeeley.com/Caverns
A tape style delay (Keeley's Mag Echo) with optional Light or Deep modulation, and a three variation reverb: Shimmer (Hall with blendable octave up), Spring (classic Fender Princeton reverb with adjustable rate tremolo), and Modulated (Plate reverb with adjustable rate modulation).
    Earthquaker Devices Dispatch Master
    www.earthquakerdevices.com/di...
Digital reverb and delay with up to 1.5s delay time
    Wampler Ethereal
    www.wamplerpedals.com/etherea...
Spacious reverb and delay with optional second delay line providing additional triplets, dotted eighths or feedbacking dotted eighths, similar to a multi-head tape delay or the Binson Echorec.
    Gear:
Fender Classic Player Jazzmaster (middle position - both pickups)
    EHX 720 looper
Boss Katana 50w amp (Clean channel)
    mic'd with a Sennheiser e609
    into a Focusrite Scarlett 2i2
Recorded in GarageBand, edited in Final Cut Pro X
So which did I like best? I touch on it at the end of the video. But probably the Wampler. It's 'engine' seems to have more interesting results.
The Caverns is an extraordinary piece of kit - SO MANY OPTIONS - but it's almost a bit overwhelming because of it. The ability to stomp either Delay or Reverb on and off is a real bonus though, compared to the other two.
I know a lot of people LOVE the Dispatch Master and it does feel like a pedal that could easily take a permanent place on a board, almost as an 'always on' pedal at the end of the chain if you want an ambient sound. It's delays and reverb are super clean, simple and will compliment any arrangement of pedals and sounds, but for me that made it a little less interesting.

The Keeley and Wampler sure have all the bells and whistles, and seem like they could be lots of fun sitting in the studio. But for me, I love the way the Dispatch master is simple and seems to sit perfectly behind what you’re playing. And it sounds really nice. These videos you’re doing are great man!!! I like the simplicity of the DM, too, but having the ability to turn each effect on and off independently is a big deal for me. Also, being able to use TRS breakout cables for effect routing or using a switcher with the Keeley is a handy feature that a lot of people don't know they want/need until they do, making the Keeley even more of a value. But again, I do like simplicity. 😃 Hard to go too wrong with these.

The Keeley is excellent. Having reverb and delay both switchable is a godsend. The Caverns also has a trem option on the spring reverb and shimmer if you want it. The delay sounds equally as good as my old carbon copy. Easy to set and forget and by turning only the rate knob you can introduce the fx or just leave them out.

Dispatch Master was the first pedal I bought. Stays behind the dry signal nicely and sounds so good. I also like the non-self oscillation when repeats is turned way up so you dont get the harsh feedback loop and the delays turn into a pad. First effect in my chain after compressor and boost, and on at least half the time. I use other pedals later in the chain to get any spacier than that.

Lots of cool pedal comparisons. I watched lots of your videos and really enjoy them. Good job
I really like your commentary during the demos too.
I remember the channel "60 cycle hum" used to do these types of pedal shootouts with words and he said his channel really took off when he started to talk more and show his face and personality. I really really like this style of video tho, I was just thinking about what he said and see similarities of the early stages of their channel to yours. I am not really a big ambiance experimenter but to my ears the Wampler sounds the most musical by quite a margin. I think it would be a very useful pedal for everyday reverb/delay use and also my WTF? pedal for extra magic super sauce. I might add that all 3 of these sound awesome and that I'm sure any one of them will be very satisfying to their owner. But unless it's horrifically expensive, I might look into getting an Ethereal on the strength of this demo. Currently I have a Catalinbread Echorec which is a very special little box that I will not part with, and I have an HX Effects for the rest of my everyday echo and reverb but that does not mean they add up to an Ethereal.

I have the Caverns for it's tweak-ability and love it. I tried it in combination with my APE from JRockett. Really a great combo, but the delay control on the APE throws things off a bit and can create a nasty squeal if you're not careful. Anyway, great pedal and worth the money over the other two - easily one of RK's best creations and sooooo underrated. thanks for the review.

I just discovered the Keeley today.
I went from wanting and Oceans 11, to Immerse MK ll to Walrus Slo. Now I feel like I want the Keeley.
I’m wondering if I can get rid of my DD3 and DOD Echo and if the Keeley and become a suitable replacement for the digital DD3 and DOD tap echo? If so, then I think I would remove my other delays and just stick with the Keeley.
      What do you think?
I just needed a reverb pedal and was really just thinking about getting a simple reverb but I really love multi-function pedals!

    • @XxStonedImmaculatexX
      @XxStonedImmaculatexX 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

The main reason I wanted a simple reverb is because I have a board and will be using it for live gigs. I would hate to fiddle with the pedal too much or forget settings or use the wrong settings at a live gig.

I'm a bass player on the search for a good reverb/delay pedal. Hard to find bass specific pedal demos. But even though this was a guitar demo I still found it quite informative. The detail you go into is very helpful. The Keeley Caverns has been on my short list for awhile now, but this video may have swayed me towards the EQD Dispatch Master. The simplicity is probably the most appealing feature. That and somewhat straight forward circuits seem to translate best to the bass. Thanks for creating these videos, they have proven very insightful. Very much appreciated, my good sir.

My second look at these. Focusing on reverb, Caverns has a more obvious effect character. Either you like it or you don't. That shimmer stuff and tremelo. Lots of effects. Whereas the other two have a more natural reverb as their core. Especially the Dispatch, which you describe as a lovely hall reverb. I almost want to rank the Dispatch as the best one because it nails a really nice reverb, and you have to have that, right? Well, this is what I'm hearing through my cheap speakers. :)
