  • In fall 2017, I began the search for the right Porsche Cayenne GTS... An SUV that I had been enamored by since its initial release as a 2008 model year. I ultimately bought the least expensive 2010 Cayenne GTS with a clean history that had ever sold at the time I purchased mine (early 2018). Although I thought I had landed the ultimate deal on a used Cayenne at the time, it turns out I actually made a $10,000+ mistake in the process. Here's the story...

    I bought. 2008 cayenne GTS tiptronic 3 years ago. It had 37,500 miles on it. Now has 46K on it. As of now the driveshaft bearing. And spark plugs and coils and normal oil changes every 3K I’ve spent around $1,000 in maintenance . It drives mint still. Really enjoy driving it in nice weather. It has yet to see any snow. I live in Mass. I got it from Southern California. 1 owner car. Paid just over 20K for it. Was worth $26K when I got it.
    No regrets buying it.

    hi, this cayenne is timeless my friend, I have 2010 black edition, bought it in 2012, used, clean history, all services at the time that the vehicle requires, never mechanical issues, no particular malfunctions. I enjoy it driving every day with my family and for myself sport driving experience for the last 12 years, awesome specs, power, handling, brakes and value even today, always comparing with all brands of its competitors premium series at its year of production. Just for the record the trade price in Athens today, starting from 25K€... nothing personal my friend, but your opinion its not correct for this car. I would urge you to buy a car that suits to your character and life styling. thank you for reading, have a nice day.

    I bought my 2009 GTS 4 years ago. Oil and Water and new tires. $1500 maintenance in 4 years. awesome vehicle.

    Not really very objective to harp on about should’ve, could’ve, would’ve. It’s not the Cayenne’s fault for a missed opportunity. The first review was better and honestly if you got 40k out of it and 2.5 years without a major fail I wouldn’t call that a mistake.

    My friend, hindsight is a beautiful thing. I passed up a Porsche 911 SC back in 2004 ( the 911 was 22 years old at the time). I went for a brand new hot hatch instead. That 911 is now £40k (I was offered it at £10k) in the UK. In relation to the Cayenne manual, if it was me looking for a daily driver, I would have gone Tiptronic. In fact, I have !

    You should try the diesel. Looks like you can find the next model 2013yr for around $18K retail. Because of the sheer low-down grunt, the tiptronic transmission in the diesel is an Aisin (same as used in Toyotas) - super reliable. The savings in the running costs are significant. You should see around 28mpg.

      I've thought about that... No doubt it would be more economical and reliable. I think for now, I've decided that I don't really need an SUV in my life. I've probably used the back seats for less than 1,000 miles over the course of my ownership. It's just one of those situations where I always wanted one... It's been a great daily driver for me for a good 40,000 miles but I'm ready to move on to the next thing.

    I bough a black on black 2010 GTS automatic buletproof with 40k miles in Brazil to use here for a few moths a year it cost me $15,000 and best choice I ever made safe powefull still looks boss and best of all I don’t have to wait for turbos to fail if I bough a turbo which we’re almost the same price

    2nd gen Cayenne is sooo good looking. LOVE how it looks. 1st gen as well, but for my two cents, 2nd gen marginally better looking. Then there is a drop off and confusion with 3rd and 4th gen as it start to look neutral, too many lines, too sweet, too compromised. I would have a hard time moving on to something else in terms of how the car looks. Normally aspirated V8 on GTS or a turbo on the next up models, either one would be great in my opinion, but I would need some money reserve in case something needs to be fixed. In May 2019 I had a chance to buy a 2nd gen Cayenne Turbo-S for $11,000 at Audi of Brookline, Massachusetts. It had around 170,000 miles, one owner (I forgot the year, but seems it was 2010) and clean/no accident carfax. And I got nervous and passed. If I have some money reserve, I would aim for the 2nd gen Cayenne GTS or Turbo/Turbo-S. Its subjective, but in my opinion the best looking Cayenne.

      I definitely agree with you on the thoughts on the looks! And wow, $11k sounds like a deal for a clean one owner 2010 Turbo S... But I can understand why with the mileage. You have the right idea in setting aside a reserve for maintenance needs. $2-3k a year is a good number depending on how much you plan to drive it and also whether you’ll be doing any repairs yourself or paying a tech.

      @@TexasRealEstate thanks. I wonder if I should have been more decisive. I got a 2015 Audi Q5 2.0 with 60k on it, one owner, for $18k instead, in May 2019. Quite happy with the car. Models like 1st and 2nd gen Cayenne however are a whole different animal and look/road presence. It can become a classic/collector item I think.

      El Roz Yeah I think that's a hard comparison to make, not really apples to apples especially with that big of a spread on the mileage. It sounds like you ended up with a solid car! The way I look at it, the Audi Q5 I'd imagine would end up being a lot more trouble free at that point with how much lower the mileage is on it. I think the production was too high on the GTS's for it to be a real collector (manual examples being an exception) but I don't really ever see any others around - so I think there's probably always going to be a place for a clean relatively low mileage example - which doesn't include mine at this point. 😅But for me that works because I don't really worry about driving it or parking it anywhere. It's nice to have a good driver. 😎

    I agree! The meanest suv design on planet! Would enjoy more content of Porsche Cayenne. About fuel consumption car looks outdated, entertainment and tech, never mind, it could always adapted to newer versions of systems. However fuel consumption and power output seems from old petrodollar days when gas was cheap! Would you keep this car, or would You sell it, would You consider electrifying car EVER or going for less powerful diesel models? Love to see more insight videos from Porsche Cayenne!

      Thank you for the feedback! Will definitely consider it. Turns out fuel is actually fairly inexpensive now with the current state of the oil market. Will definitely share some more insight on the Cayenne on future videos!

      I had 2006 Porsche Cayenne the 3.2 V6 for almost 5 years!!! I bought it with 14 000 miles in the end of 2008, I ended up putting 130 000 on it, the only thing that broke on it was the rear drive shaft that was like $800 if I remember correctly everything else was bullet proof Mobile One oil only, brakes, and the battery I had to change. The car was slow speed wise its a heavy SUV but once it gets going its planted on the road great suspension, I know for a fact the V6 is the most reliable one down side like I said very slow. I am just sharing this info with you because you are asking about the V6 3.6 so hopefully this helps you a lil bit. And just to add I went to prison for 4 years when I came out I saw the car was still being driven the guy bought it from an auction and it had 186 000 miles at that time still running great from what I was told. I am definitely getting another Cayenne and I am looking for 2008 to 2010 Turbo or Turbo S if anyone knows a TechArt Magnum package the 997 model, let me know !!! I am looking too Brother !!!

    Maybe buying the cheapest cayenne you can find is a mistake. It’s like taking the lowest bid and expecting great results.

      I get what you're saying. I wanted a GTS at the end of the day and paid up for one that met my criteria at a great price. I like buying toward the flat end of the depreciation curve but with high end German cars, while you minimize depreciation - you pay for it on the maintenance side of things. I could see why someone would opt to lease a new Cayenne to minimize the maintenance expense with the new car experience. I guess it depends what you want more! Either way there's no such thing as a cheap Porsche. 😃

    I’m looking at one just like yours but a 09 129k I looked at it ran and drove good and I want it but I’m not sure on reliability what’s some good things to look at 1 owner there asking 12500$ for should I buy it?

      They’re pretty reliable in my experience! Just keep in mind when any maintenance items come up, it’s similar to what would be expected for a car with a near $100k msrp. $12,500 sounds like a solid deal for a clean one owner car. If it’s for sale by the owner, see if you can get all the maintenance records. If it has recent service records / history and it runs & drives great, and everything seems to work, and no fluid leaks in or underneath the engine - that’s all a good sign. Main things I’d look for.

    If you're interested in a 2010 Cayenne Transsyberia, I'm getting mine ready for sale. There were only 285 of those made and just about 120 came to the U.S. Mines the Black and Orange version, and I'm the 2nd owner.

    You should look for a Mercedes ml550 great vehicles it was just an ECU tune you get huge horsepower gains. And reliability

      I test drove a ML63 AMG prior to buying the Cayenne GTS. I like the ML's but personal preference is the Cayenne, I just like the way it drives best but I'm sure that's a personal preference thing.

      @@415bayshark I was under that impression as well. The ML63 scared me away on the test drive... I got a sense that it was a money pit just from driving it haha. Not to say that the Cayenne is a whole lot better when you add 40k miles to it though 😅

      Roicki I’ve heard it both ways. I’ve heard that if you pay and get the right one they can be reliable and mostly just maintenance costs. If you buy one that has issues from oil starvation or rear diff fluid needing changed and so on they can be expensive.

    Hindsight adjusted... Imagine having a clutch failure on the 6 speed and the crazy cost of those rare parts that are likely dealer-only. $8K cost avoided. the other hidden cost is buying a corrosion-bucket northern car with all steel colts rusted into their dissimilar metal aluminum. after having a few Ohio cars (same rust issues) I absolutely refuse to buy ANY used car from up there. on the northern junk - simple bolts break off, the roads are such shite that suspensions and wheel bearings prematurely fail. Untold headaches, stupid repair costs, and low resale cost was avoided if your GTS tiptronic was a texas car.

    False title, nothing facts based about the car. Just moaning about depreciation. Mate live with it , or do your homework.
    You know they will depreciate....thats just cars. What you have to weight up is whether the enjoyment of owning and driving the vehicle over weights the downside which is depreciation.
    Expecting a car to hold the value you bought it for, unless its a exotic or classic, is like expecting Celine Dion to still like she did in my Heart Will Go On. Reality it’s a great thing.

    A huge mistake would be ...it’s a piece of junk, or the maintenance costs are through the roof, or it spends all its time in the shop...kinda click bait on the video

      On the contrary, I got a great deal on the purchase... Probably the lowest price paid for a clean 2010 model at the time of purchase. The point of the video was to share a story that I felt like sharing. 👏🏼 I’ll admit, this is the worst video I’ve ever done and I’m committed to improving a bit with each one I do.       Tyler Roicki ok, then I must be missing the “huge” mistake? When everything you talk about ...as far as the Cayenne goes, was a great car. You just wanted a manual for $$$ resale value.
      I tell ya a huge mistake...buying a 2006 Jetta TDi, and having to pay $4k for a transmission a year in. Then wheel bearings and control arms. I paid $8k used....that was a HUGE mistake lol...

      @@canadiankrispybacon1450 Yikes! Sorry to hear about the troubles with your Jetta. So here's the point with the video... At the time I bought my Cayenne GTS, I also had the opportunity to buy a manual. The manual would have appreciated $10,000, despite the use. Mine however has depreciated $5,000 since it's the more common tip-tronic. That's a $15k difference in value, for roughly the same entry price. I enjoy my Cayenne GTS and don't regret buying it, however financially speaking - not buying the manual one was a huge mistake. 😄
