I think plush toys can be the same thing as imaginary friends. You still project a personality into them, so it's like your imaginary friend has a tangible avatar.

Your theories always made me rethink of the disney movies I've seen. And just like you stated Riley's imaginary friend isn't completely gone, with the love and bond they both share. I think Bingbong went to another aspect of Riley's mind. Like a forgotten section in the human mind. Just because its forgotten doesn't mean it's gone for good... Unless you're an amnesiac. Perhaps a trigger of one of their activities would affect Riley's memories of her time with her imaginary friend.
i think bing bong took the memories for HIMSELF BECAUSE he knew HE was going to fade away too & HE at least wanted to remember RILEY because he didnt know where HE would go when he faded away :( im an adult, and watching bing bong fade away, while raising 3 boys, still makes me cry for the "loss of innocence" that i KNOW MY kids will someday lose as well after the world gets them down and tells them to change who they are just to "fit in" :(

Bing Bong is still there, somewhere. If Riley has kids when she grows up and these kids have an imaginary friend, maybe she’ll tell them that she, too had one when she was little. It’s like telling kids you believed in Boogie Men when you were little (the Boogie Man in my house lived in the basement bathroom. I refused to go down there unless I had friends over).
Never really had a true imaginary friend, but I used to pretend to roller skate or bicycle through Toon Town (the clean version from the Disney Channel, not the scary one from Roger Rabbit ^_^0) I love this theory. I remember both my and my youngest brother crying like little girls when Bing Bong "died". This theory totally makes sense: if there are still memories of Riley playing with Bing Bong, maybe that means he's not completely gone! Supposedly a sequel is in the works, so maybe Joy may encounter him in the revived Imagination Land here!
well what people don’t know is bing bong actually represents childhood innocence, and when he fades away, riley loses that innocence of being a child and figures our how tough life will continue to be.
I don't remember ever having an invisible friend when I was little, but Bing Bong's death was SO emotional to me that I began to wonder If maybe I actually had a Bing Bong of my own as a child.
