Watching your videos is why I just bought like 7 or 9 DS lites to find a perfect one for $20 or less. And I found two. Then I sold all the others being completely honest about their working order cause I took the time to charge and test them all. Made more money than I spent.
This is entertaining for us. We want you to enjoy what you're doing, not trying to "force" entertainment for the sake of the video. Love your content, Elliot 🤘
15:25 you're scraping off the gold plating not solder mask. You can solder straight to it, please don't scrape it off. And those wires are fine for charging, the DS doesn't pull a lot of current.
@@TSSCATS i mean its not like hes being rude. he can have fun and still learn from people in the comments. this is actually really good advice because his whole channel is based around ds modding and you wouldn't want someone to try and recreate this and possibly damage something.
Yeaaaaa buddy! Love the Watch videos, but this is what I've been waiting for!! I don't even wanna mod gameboys, just really satisfying to watch. You are enjoyable to watch and listen to.
You can fix that! 1. Magnification and practice. If you're using magnification and can see that shaking amplified, eventually your brain learns to compensate. It won't compensate all the time but you'll be able to focus and make the joints just when you need to. 2. Bracing. Find somewhere to prop up your hands. Put something down if you have to. 3. Some yeeting of small components little hand and finger twitches are completely normal and not a cause for concern. You'll learn to have it not ruin what you're doing. Good luck with your soldering. Did you know that Louis Rossmann, that famous macbook board repair youtuber, has some sort of neurodegenerative disease that makes him have relatively little control of his hands? And he does just fine.
Watching your vids is great inspiration for me. I used to be decent with doing my own repairs on my own electronics and taught myself how to solder which came in very handy when salvaging old toys. I’ll be back all in someday but until then I got something to watch to keep dream alive.
What a damn beautiful conversion. I’m really tempted to try this myself, I’ve already got a broken DS Lite that’s prime for this after I tried to transfer my broken hinge Lite’s internals to my brother’s water damaged Lite’s shell and managed to tear the top screen ribbon cable in the process
I still don't comprehend why people mod a DS lite and 2DS to be single screen. Some games mandate having that 2nd screen. But then again, anyone doing this is gonna have multiple DS or 3DS/2DS anyways. I think this project is wicked cool though.
Love the abxy button layout! Wish we had a front speaker though. Theres a flashcart with an snes emu. And there’s a way to get the top screen onto video out. Been lookin for a macro mod case for a while since my lite hinges are broken. Bit steep for me though
Will say I love this mod. It’s amazing what love people have for nearly 20 year old tech and what they will do to keep it relevant for nostalgic enthusiasts. Such a work of art and very well done on the part of the creator. Worthy of the Louvre IMO.
This is the type of content I like. People just sitting down and genuinely enjoying what they're making a video about, just like old times. This is the type of content we need to go back to. Also hi Elliot 😁
yeah.. flexible pcb n00b error number 1 there, the flexible pcb needs to be flush, you don't need to tin or scrap the pads (infact scraping them is bad and could cause the solder to have trouble sticking) if they are gold and shiny the solder will stick, and you simply fill the holes with solder. connecting the pcbs together. silk screen is the green of the pcb. there is none over gold contacts. even unused ones, otherwise was a fun watch, i suck at soldering.
Congratulations on the LTT "The Retro Future" branded screwdriver! What an amazing achievement as a content creator, to receive recognition from Linus and team.
Does Elliot still have a PO Box? I have a DS lite I broke forever ago trying to replace the top screen he can have. Hopefully one day he can give it new life.
The digitizers and ribbon cables actually seemed pretty robust throughout the repairs I've done on some DSs. Like, I had one that when through a few different revisions with multiple disconnects, and never had any issues.
It's so beautiful 😍 It's a shame it's so expensive and that there is no cheaper option. I'd be happy with a cheaper plastic one. The design is gorgeous, I don't care about the quality of the material as long as it works.
ive always thought of gb macros to just be something to do when you have already repaired a bunch already, and need some good convo starter, a novelty if you will, but in most situations I would probably have the same thought as you :]

I want to mod a switch lite (one of my favorite consoles) but literally everyone says soldering a mod chip is pretty hard. I love the switch lite because it is so compact and cute! It is pretty hard for me to see because i am legally blind but that is besides the point.
I love a good knockoff kislux because it helps me decide if I want to buy the real thing. Thatâs the part. Thatâs it. I feel like people discriminate against knockoffs, but for me, Iâll pause when buying a trendy big-ticket item or when I feel the over-consumption frenzy is coming for me.
Itâs not that I'm bothered by people buying dupes or fakes, but if I invest my hard earned money into that item, I wouldnât want to buy that brand, or bag, or design and find something more than fit into my needs and wants as kislux . And nothing is wrong with that.
I hate Macros so much. With like 2% more effort this could have AT LEAST been a 2ds style replacement shell, but I guess we hate keeping the best way to play an original console around and functioning as it should.
There is nothing wrong with this, looks cool af, a legitimately awesome GBA console and there are millions of DS consoles out there. So much so they will not run out in your lifetime.
@jacks559 there absolutely is something wrong with this, there's tons of other ways to play GBA games that don't compromise the original experience, namely *on an actual GBA*, modded or not, or even emulated on a billion modern devices being made in this very year. It's ridiculous to instead look at a DS that could potentially be modded to be a better version of what it was (we're potentially getting oled screens for the DS soon???) and then go "Nah I'll just hack the top screen off and play GBA games on it!" We absolutely shouldn't be willingly destroying these things with stuff like this and what's worse is people do it commercially and it's just an awful, awful situation.
@@shilze1 we aren't destroying them you big baby, it is completely reversible. You're literally just being a Karen about it lol. And again there's no need to worry about them running out, no amount of these mods are going to affect the ds supply. It makes one of the best "OEM" GBA consoles and it's a fun mod to do, in fact if these oled screens do come that'll be even better for this mod lol. The fact that there is so many replacement parts for the ds too there is genuinely no reason to be upset at this unless you're just miserable or not thinking about it properly.
I'm glad that you're back making videos and everything, but I'm not watching this one fully. I don't like GBA Macro mods, in this day and age where screen replacements are so readily available. I did watch long enough to see you pulling screws out, and I must say, the top of your LTT screwdriver kit has flat magnets, so it'll hold on to those screws for you.
Why? It's a legitimately cool Gameboy console, it's not permanent and there are millions of DS consoles out there, in fact a million people could do this mod and you'd still see a constant amount of DS consoles.
Yeah, metal shells being portrayed as the nonplusultra is so annoying, given the obvious problems that come with them. Like, those who like them shall have them, but can we please acknowledge they're more of a display piece than practical?
It's mainly a novelty item to play GBA on. If you want DS functionality back you gotta put a custom firmware on that lets you toggle between top and bottom screen on just that one you have

Honestly, the tolerances for the design really seem like they need to be increased. Flush may be nice, but precision harms accessibility
That was awesome video. That is so cool that people can make there own system like that

I prefer the Ostent digitizers over the Zed Labz ones. They are thicker, and are clear and glossy like the originals.

Great video return to form.
Eliot, I really like your videos, keep being your authentic self and what an awesome build, well done, that looked really tricky
Beautiful, but I cannot help thinking it's a bit of a shame downgrading a DS instead of repairing it. Anyway, great content as always.

I mean if it's a broken hinge DS, I'd have no problem swapping it into this shell
How is it a downgrade
Because you can’t play ds games
@drewchaboo719 yes you can did you not see the slot for the ds game cart you can also mod the screen to switch between top and bottom screen
Now this just needs to include that feature where the DS could output video through its audio jack.
Do what you enjoy makes a beter video for me to enjoy. Keep up the great content dude.

Nice that you didn't show some perfect build process like an advertiser.
Elliot, I just love you
This is a great video! Thank you so much here kislux for making my budget look more reasonable.
0:05 reminded himself he's British
If you were perhaps insane, do you think you can put a better speaker and better screen with this kit, as well?
I would like something that could play DS, Gameboy, Gameboy Advance, and Switch, off the original game cartridges
I would imagine launching the slot 2 game from the R4 card would allow you to use cheats
How hard would it be to make it so you can toggle between screens?
This mod is great and want to get it myself but, unpopular opinion here..I don't really like the aluminum and would love to see a hard plastic version
Honestly a plastic shell in the same colour as the DMG would be so much better
I love you your videos
I hope the retro future comments on this fit comment
What size screwdrivers do you need for a ds lite, need to take mine apart and go figure my 4 drivers arent the right size
The screen looks very small now. It's a shame the kit didn't include a larger screen and stereo sound to make the machine perfect.
Do you know how to restore the paint on a red 3DS XL? cause on mine there's very small paint chipping around the corners.
How did you change the BIOS on the DS?
so turning a DS lite into a fancy GBA

There's a TV out mod an screen switching mod
Ok
Air duster when we all know what it's actually for .did nick purchase the parts from temu and charge more seems that way 😂😂
Why on earth did you need to scrape those pads with a knife?!?!?! I've never needed to do that and I hope people don't damage anything copying that.
You should edit this video and remove that before someone damages a board

Aluminum sounds cooler.
These Shells are to expansive
Like a Shell Like this is 100€ the only positive on These Things is that the Roms are for free😂
It needs a front stick on glass overlay , it looks a bit shit as is
You dont connect the wifi antena
Thats more than enough waffling, Now lets get right into things 😁
i wish they were injection molded plastic instead of metal. metal is just a weird choice for something you're holding in your hands
Is it just me, or is the screen wonky?
The screen is off center. For GBA I would have just gotten retro handhelds instead of turning DS Lites into GBA devices.
Itâs not that I'm bothered by people buying dupes or fakes, but if I invest my hard earned money into that item, I wouldnât want to buy that brand, or bag, or design and find something more than fit into my needs and wants as kislux . And nothing is wrong with that.
