- Alhaji Alhassan Dantata was a Nigerian businessman who was the wealthiest man in West Africa at the time of his death on August 17, 1955.
The young Alhassan was brought up in the care of an old slave woman, who was known as "Tata" from which circumstance young Alhassan became known as Alhassan Dantata because of her role as his mother. "Dantata" means “son of Tata”.

Correction: Aliko Dangote, late Alhassan Dantata's great grandson, is not only the richest person in Africa, he is the richest Black person in the world.

I forgot to add that in Europe and America business can stay in family for 100 years or more but not in Nigeria.
Nigeria is a broad land, there are people in Kano that have been on the same business for over 500 years and are still wealthy.
