  • You may be wondering, what life in Nigeria was really like in the 1940s especially during the time of the second world war.
Well, despite the overbearing influence of the colonial masters, life before the second world war was intriguing in many ways.
Nigerians had a great sense of humor and with a closely knitted family.
In the south, a typical family had an average size of 8 or more members.
This number was relatively higher in the northern part of the country.
Since farming was the major occupation for most families, a large family size was useful for farming purposes as well as for fighting war and other communal clashes that may arise.
Even though farming was the common occupation for most people, there were still some skilled craftsmen who specialized in weaving and there were herders as well.
The herders and nomads were mostly of Fulani descent.
Down south, cocoa farming, palm oil and palm kernel production were the most common farming practices.
While pounding grains was a daily chore for women in the northern part of the country, processing palm oil and palm kernel was a daily chore for women in the south.
Farmers sold their produce for profit and living conditions were relatively good.
However, in the months and years following the British declaration of war with Germany on the 3rd of September 1939, life for an average Nigerian would change dramatically. #ww2 #hisplemedia #Nigeria
