- Traditional Irish Soda Bread Recipe
450g / 3 ¾ cups of Plain Flour
350ml / 1 ½ cups of Buttermilk approx.
¾ tsp Baking Soda/Bicarbonate of Soda
¾ tsp of Salt
You can go with 1 tsp of salt if you want. This was fine for me though
This was baked at 220C/428F Conventional oven for 15 minutes then lowered to 180C/356F for a further 30 minutes.
Fan oven 200C/392F then lowered to 160C/320F
Alternatively you can just bake it at 200C/392F Conventional oven or 180C/356F Fan oven for about 45 minutes straight as I didn’t see a major difference
Substitute: If you have no buttermilk add 2 tablespoons of vinegar to 350ml of milk. Let it stand for about 5 minutes before adding it to the dry ingredients. You can also use natural or Greek yoghurt. If Its too thick add a drop of water
Some flours hydrate differently so you may need to add a drop more buttermilk. Aim for the consistency in the video
All the best,
Chris ☘️

From Northern Ireland, THIS is the true Soda Bread...A 'quick bread' like our ancestors made day and daily...THANK YOU FOR A TRUE AND AUTHENTIC RECIPE FOR OUR TRADITIONAL SODA BREAD! 🥰🥰🥰
No bother Gaggy! Thanks a lot 😊☘️
Aren't you not supposed to kneed this kind of bread
@@ceceliabeck8967 No. Quick breads are not kneaded. They are brought together roughly, shaped then baked. Kneading makes the dough tough due to excessive Gluten release....
Accent is not Northern Ireland it is more Dublin, Really good bread
@@louthgirl1 If you actually READ my OP, it says 'FROM Northern Ireland....' meaning I'm writing from NI. Quite obviously the Baker hasn't got a Northern accent...Dolt
A 5 minute presentation just what I like and so well done . Thanks
Thanks Chris, looks Truly Scrumptious. And the end gave me a Chuckle. Well Done, and GOD Bless You and Your Family.🕊️🙏💖🙏🕯️🕯️🕯️

Nice one pal! 😄
I make Soda Bread every year around St.Paddy's Day. All my friends enjoy it and look forward to it. This recipe is so simple, but mine includes all the extras. I think I would miss the raisins!
Yes, add some if you want Ellen! Thanks for watching it 😊☘️

Nice one Lorraine! Thanks for sharing 🇮🇪☘️😊
Good morning Chris! Thanks for the quick soda bread tutorial. I'm wondering if the liquid could be replaced with Guinness? All the best from Ottawa, Canada.
Thank you very much for this recipe. Newbie here and I just subscribed to your channel 🙂
No problem. Thanks for subscribing! 😊☘️
So easy, can't wait to try it!!
Go for it! ☘️
Thank you for this, it's in the oven as we speak! My first. :)
Let us know how it turns out Amber! ☘️
@@irishbakerabroad It is delicious! I baked it on a cast iron skillet with butter. I am a happy happy girl right now! I am going to do this all the time. So much better than buying it from the store with all the additives. Only thing is I will have to watch myself...I'm kind of like that Pilot Jeff fellow in the self-control department, ha. Go raibh maith agat! ☘
@@irishbakerabroad Oh and I used all whole wheat pastry flour because that's all I have...and I would do it again. I did stop short 10 minutes just so I could check it (also high-altitude), and that seemed to be just right. We'll find out as I get to the center if I need to pop it in for some additional time, but so far so good.
I subscribed and I'm looking forward to checking out more as time permits. Thanks again!
Going to make this right now 😁
Great stuff Sharon! 💪🏻☘️
@@irishbakerabroad the good stuff👌🏼 x
Never made this but when i buy Soda scone. I like to half them through the middle and grill cheese on them. Delicious.
Nice 👌🏻😋
Made the bread this morning Chris. It was class. Though I think the dough was a little wet. I'll do better next time.
Great stuff! Well done 😊☘️
Ohhhh, didn’t poke the four corners to let the 🧚🏻♀️ out. 😊
I did on the Brown though 😄👌🏻
It also works with thinnish yoghurt if you can’t afford buttermilk-or find it- and yoghurts easy to make at home with just a mug of milk and tablespoon of live yoghurt (from yesterdays homemade yoghurt!).
That’s correct 👌🏻😊
Really great video. Would I be banned from Ireland if I told you I didn't use buttermilk, but sifted in a little citric acid with the flour, salt and bicarb, and used water for the liquid? 🙈. It still turned out great. I used the rice flour for the look like you did and it had a great appearance.
Thank you!
Saint Patrick is proud of you!
What did you dust it with? Sorry, English is my second language.
Gracias!❤️
Rice flour. It’s not necessary though 😊☘️
I've got some in the oven - same - had no bread and I don't have time to bake yeast loaves. Mine always turns out like hard unrisen lumps - every blessed time. My yeast loaves are always awesome but I've no clue what I'm doing wrong. I do grind my own whole wheat flour though and mix half and half with white.
where abouts are you from in Ireland? My husband is from Mullingar (now living in California) and we just made this in our air fryer and it was amazing. He said that it's the first time he tasted a soda bread that was just like from home. TY for this!!
Ah that’s brilliant. Glad to hear it! I’m from Dublin 😊☘️
youtube.com/@francescaetc - could you tell me how you are doing it in the airfryer, please? Temp/time etc (just got one & don't know what to do in it apart from chips..)
Looks simple looks easy except I don’t have buttermilk but I do have a Greek style yoghurt and I’m wondering if I could substitute buttermilk for the Greek style yoghurt
Yes just thin it out with some milk or water 😊☘️
@@irishbakerabroad thanks! Will give it a try. ☘️
I had “Irish Soda Bread with raisins” at party, is it supposed to be really sweet like a cake, a white birthday cake or coffee cake?
2:37 I couldn’t understand how long you said for baking at 180C temp. Sorry I couldn’t understand the accent haha
Hahaha. 30 minutes pal 😄
@@irishbakerabroadcheers
@@irishbakerabroad turned out great thanks. Had it with some sautéed onions and bacon🤌🏼
Make Irish soda bread whilst studying the Dublin accent!
I love your accent, but how many minutes when the temperature is lowered to 180? 😅 I’ve rewinded 4 times, and I cannot for the life of me, figure out what you’re saying 🙈 English isn’t even my first language, but Irish is a whole other thing, I just love the sound of it ❤
Nevermind, found it in the comments! 😂
Ah you found it. Ok 👌🏻Is there a subtitles option on the video? 😄
The subtitles say: 4 to 40 minutes, so they’re not at all helpful 😂 Thank you for your response 😊
@@tomtommertje Sorry! 🤣🤣🤣
@@irishbakerabroad Don’t be! 😂😂😂
why didn't you let the fairies out of the bread( by pricking it at the four corners)? :D
I didn’t see or hear any in there 👌🏻😉
What is the kind of flour you sprinkled on top that won't brown? I suspect it may not be available, never having heard of it.
Rice flour ☘️
In order to get that consistency I'd have to add another 1/2 to 3/4 cup of buttermilk to the flour amount. Would I also have to up the soda? My dough is raggy and dry every time.
It should be fine. If not give it 1 tsp instead next time ☘️
Teaspoon or a tablespoon of ordinary sugar or caster? 😊 thanks Chris
I put in a table spoon 😮
Hi Chris, aspiring Irish baker abroad in Dorset, UK here! What temperature do you bake in a fan oven as I haven't got a clue how to turn the fán on my oven off? Go raibh maith agat
It might be a fan forced oven so. Try at 205 then lower to 160 after 15 minutes Colette ☘️
I'm in valby where you at
No holes for the fairies?
I didn’t hear or see any 😉
Hi Chris, I love your channel. Is it okay to use all purpose flour for soda bread? I'm in Canada and the flour here is a bit different to Irish flour.
Yes all purpose is plain flour. No problem Margaret! 💚🤍🧡
Can you cook this into rolls instead of a loaf?
Try Soda Farls then. The video is here on the channel ☘️😊
Sir, you didn’t let the fairies out. They are always up to no good.☘️😀
I didn’t no. But I did on every single Soda bread after that! 💪🏻😄
I beg to say, better with wholemeal.
I thought you had to use bread soda. I buy it when I'm home or if anyone is visiting thats the first thing I ask them to bring 😁
Howaya Ann! Yeah baking soda is just another term for it. It’s the same. All the best! 🇮🇪💚
It’s in thd oven now .☘️
How’d it go Grace? ☘️
@@irishbakerabroad Yes everyone loved and nobody has died so I’d say fine lol☘️
@@irishbakerabroad I made Irish Stew too and apple cake .☘️
@@Soirse8 That’s great Grace 😄 Happy St Patrick’s Day! 🇮🇪
@@irishbakerabroad Thankyou and a very happy St Patrick’s Day to you too ☘️
Are you sure your measurements of 3 2/3 cups of flour to 1 1/2 cups of buttermilk is correct?
Its pretty close. The conversion is from grams and ml to cups so they are approx not 100% exact. Why, have you had an issue?
@@irishbakerabroad the final baked product tasted good to me, it just didn’t seem to mix as “wet” as I expected in the bowl when first combining. It was dry to the point where I couldn’t really shape a uniform ball, the dough had cracks that I couldn’t mould out of it once I was forming the loaf on a baking sheet. It’s my first crack at it so maybe that’s how it’s supposed to be? Either way it tasted fantastic with butter in my opinion and seemed as moist as it should have been.
@@forcefromthenorth9898 Oh okay, some flours hydrate differently too. But just add a bit more buttermilk then until you achieve the consistency in the video 😊☘️
@@irishbakerabroad ok right on! Thanks brother cheers 🍁🍀
@@forcefromthenorth9898 No bother pal! 💪🏻☘️
As a irish guy making a TRADITIONAL irish soda bread you should have stirred it with your claw hand
I make up for that in other videos 😄👌🏻
Mine came out to dense inside 😢
Yeah? Was it baked though Michael? Sodabread is a generally dense but you could add a little more soda or a tsp of baking powder to make it a bit lighter ☘️
@@irishbakerabroad thanks
@@michael9886 Another thing, make sure to Cut the cross deep 👍🏻
rice flour - a traditional irish ingredient ha ha
It’s optional 😆
