    Hi Chris, fry bacon then the sodas in the fat with an egg for a bacon egg soda. Staple breakfast in our house

    From County Down in Northern Ireland, my Great Aunt Annie spent her Thursdays making soda, potato, potato-apple and fruit bread for her family and friends. Farls were cooked on a cast iron round griddle with four 'arms' underneath, each powered by propane....It was like an industrial scale Bunsen burner.....I WISH I had kept the griddle, with all my heart! ❤❤❤❤❤❤

    My grandmother added a bit of cream of tartar and a bit of sugar to her recipe along with the salt and baking soda. Her soda farls were delicious! I used her recipe this morning to make some for breakfast.

    You’re such a talented teacher! And thank you very much for the delicious recipes. Your instructions make them easy to learn, and they’re a good quantity if you’re just cooking for 1 or 2 people.

    Brilliant recipe, worked like a treat.
    Just one wee suggestion. If you’re not eating them straight away cover with a tea towel when letting them cool. The slight steaming effect stops the crust getting too hard.
    Then split them and heat them in the pan after the bacon has cooked. Soda bacon and egg banjos for the win!

    Jam? That needs some fried eggs, sausage, bacon, and HP

    1 thing I miss is being able to eat soda farls, loved them toasted with proper Irish or Ulster butter. GF flour is more tricky to work with.

    Made this today with a newly seasoned cast iron pan. Wanted to make this ever since I visited Ulster 10 years ago. Think I used a bit too much butter milk but still beats store bought Dutch supermarket bread!

    Hi, to make a wheaten farl is it just a change to wheaten flour instead of white flour? thanks. S

    • @irishbakerabroad
      @irishbakerabroad  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah just change out the flour or go half half. You may need to add a bit more buttermilk if the dough is too stiff ☘️

    Thank you for sharing. I will make them tomorrow. I recognize some as Irish Cooking and Recipes. There are others that are more universal, which is hard to point out the country of origin. I love the Guiness Irish Stew, and the soda bread, which I consider authentic Irish food.

    Just made these for Saturday morning coffee and homemade kumquat jam. They were perfect, looked just like yours and were so satisfying and, I made them vegan with soy milk with a bit of white vinegar. Thanks for sharing this touch of Ireland right here in Santa Barbara, California.

    You can do good old American buttermilk biscuits the same way..Prefer a cast iron skillet❤

    Are they like biscuits or muffins or scones or something? My buttermilk went to waste because I never used it. Get the urge to bake and then weekends come and I’m bushed.

      Like soda bread except the dough is flattened and done on a griddle/pan instead of the oven. Give it a try 👌🏻☘️

    Hey Chris! Why do my farls go so yellow? Is it too much baking soda?

    • @irishbakerabroad
      @irishbakerabroad  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It would have an off white yellowish color if using unbleached flour. That’s what I use. If it’s really unnaturally yellow then that could be down to not enough acidity to neutralize the soda. Be sure to use buttermilk and if it’s still too yellow you could try reducing the Soda a little.

      @TrishaButtle 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@irishbakerabroadyeah that makes sense! Thank you. I use plain full fat milk if i don't have buttermilk! Maybe i should add lemon juice to the milk if using full fat and let it go off 👍

    • @irishbakerabroad
      @irishbakerabroad  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I’d eat them within 2-3 days. You can toast and fry them too after that if they become too dry. Just store them in a plastic bag 😊
